From the label:
On its spectacular debut recording, the exciting young British vocal group stile antico presents a program of English Renaissance music associated with the office of Compline, the service that ends the monastic liturgical day. A who's-who of 16th-century British composers--including Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, and John Sheppard--is represented here by hymns, antiphons, responsories, motets, and psalms: the occasion not only for music of intimacy, elegance, and reflection, but for flights of breathtaking canonic and contrapuntal invention and harmonic daring.Stile Antico is an ensemble of young British singers, fast gaining recognition as one of the most original and exciting new voices in its field. In 2005 the group won the inaugural Audience Prize at the Early Music Network International Young Artists' Competition, drawing critical praise for its `wonderfully vivid singing' and `perfectly focused and ideally balanced voices.' Since this success, Stile Antico has appeared throughout the UK, including at the City of London, Lake District Summer Music and Beverley and East Riding Festivals; engagements for 2007 include the York Early Music Festival. The group has also collaborated with Sting on tour in his project Songs from the Labyrinth, performing lute songs by John Dowland.
Working without a conductor, the members of Stile Antico rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing artistically to the musical result. Their repertoire ranges from the glorious legacy of the English Tudor composers to the works of the Flemish and Spanish schools and the music of the early Baroque. They are passionate about the need to communicate with their audiences, combining thoughtful programming with direct, expressive performances. They are also committed to developing their educational work, for which they have received generous funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

So very beautiful!.......2007-07-11
I can't tell you how much I love this!
It is pure and moving; I can turn off my thinking and let my mind soak in the beauty.
I regret that it is such a high-class work, as I fear that many will miss it, expecting it to be over their heads. I hope that more of my fellow low-brows will somehow stumble upon it and have a chance to experience these most-excellent moments.
Gorgeous.......2007-03-05
Great Premiere from Stile Antico!.......2007-02-27
I don't know how a group of young upstarts from Britain without a conductor were able to produce such a sound, but they did. "Music for Compline" focuses on music from composers in England during the transition from Catholicism to Protestantism- Byrd, Sheppard, Tallis, etc.- and as the title implies, it's music that would have been used during a compline service at the time. Compline, for those of you not familiar with the Liturgy of the Hours, is the last prayer service in the liturgical day. As such, the music is serene, contemplative, and prayerful.
The way Stile Antico has gelled as a group is amazing, especially considering they have no conductor. (Although they surely have at least a de-facto rehearsal leader) Their sound is clear and beautiful, and they display exquisite musicianship without being overly technical or icy. They are able to share their fresh (though informed) perspectives on early music with each other to create an organic sound, so not having a conductor actually turns out to be an asset for these young musicians.
Fans of the Tallis Scholars will love this CD. Arguably, Stile Antico is better than the Tallis Scholars in some ways. To elaborate, the Tallis Scholars, as good as they are, can come across as technical and icy, whereas Stile Antico never does, at least not to my ears. On the contrary, they have a warm, authentic sound. Not that I have anything against the Tallis Scholars.
In conclusion, for everyone who loves sacred choral music, or beautiful music in general, "Music for Compline" is a must-have. The musical serenity will be a refuge from stress, and will uplift your spirits.
Music for Compline.......2007-02-05
Impeccable ensemble is evident throughout the disc, and this is especially impressive when accomplished within various well-judged slow tempi. Highlights in this regard include a wonderfully ethereal and sonorous performance of Tallis' rarely heard seven-part 'Miserere nostri', and Sheppard's intoxicating 'Libera nos I & II' whose marvellous longing dissonances are given just the right amount of time to register. Byrd's 'Miserere mihi' also receives a fine performance, and the same composer's exquisite homophonic setting of 'Christe lux es et dies' serves to demonstrate these singers' aptitude for naturally shaped phrasing and beautifully paced cadences.
The programming is cohesive throughout, combining familiar, celebrated settings with some rare gems, notably Hugh Aston's giant antiphon 'Gaude, virgo mater Christi', of which this is the first recording made available on CD.
Congratulations are also due to Harmonia Mundi for their superb recording quality, which captures splendidly not only the clarity of the voices, but also the magnificent acoustics of All Hallow's, Gospel Oak. Beautiful packaging together with intelligent, informative programme notes completes this excellent debut release.

Motown did so many things well in the '60s and early '70s that this overview of the label's smashes (and some lesser-known classics) practically demands four CDs. It gets them, too, filling them with single mixes of more than 100 tracks. That the running order begins with Barrett Strong's statement of purpose "Money (That's What I Want)" and ends with Marvin Gaye's statement of concern "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" says a lot about how far the company moved in its golden decade--but no more so than what the same two cuts' differences in sound get across. The company was able to blend the smooth and the harsh in ways that few other pop entities have ever mastered, thereby getting over not only to the feet and the wallet, but to the heart. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
MONO-TOWN.......2007-02-25
Each CD jewel case is fronted with a repro of a Gordy Co. label, including one of the very first MOTOWNs, which was pale pink in color. The accompanying 68-page long box book is quite comprehensive. Recording dates for all songs and chart positions are given. There's lots of great photos; artists and groups are given a few pages of bio each. This HITSVILLE USA four-CD box set is fairly extensive, and about all you'd ever need in a compilation of MOTOWN 45s.

Motown Box-Nowhere To Run-2:46-TWELVE SECONDS!There's A Big Difference there.
Also, With Dancing In The Street, my favorite part is on this, when Martha says "Yeah", at the end, on Motown Box, 4 seconds are 'remastered'. (frown)Therefore, it is'nt there. BUT, people, There are a few notable songs missing. Quicksand, By Martha & the Vandellas, Bye Bye Baby, By Mary Wells, Playboy, by the Marvelettes, When The Lovelight starts shining through His eyes, by the Supremes, Hitch Hike, By Marvin Gaye, and others, you know what I mean? So, overall, this is the better box to get.

This is the Motown sound!.......2006-08-11
of all R&B-based record companies during the golden age of American popular music. Detroit, Michigan, known as the Motor City, gained yet another nickname: Hitsville USA. Everyone referred to it as Motown. In this collection, all of the well-known groups (The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Miracles, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jr. Walker & the All-Stars, The Jackson 5) are represented as well as the known solo artists (Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway). Included also are some wonderful one or two-shot wonders (Shorty Long, Brenda Holloway, Eddie Holland [of Motown's hit-making songwriting trio H-D-H], The Velvelettes, The Elgins, The Monitors, The Contours) and more. What's interesting about this set is that there are many of the well-known songs along with some songs that you probably just don't hear anymore or weren't that well-known. So you get your fair share of both like the Supremes' well-known "Baby Love" and Shorty Long's rare but wonderful "Function at the Junction." The downside of this set is nothing too alarming. Not all the artists' hit songs, big and small, are included and I think that's done so that other little-known-but-definitely-worth-discovering are given a chance at spin time, too; even some from the top artists, too. Think about it: if every single Motown record that made the charts was included, this collection would just balloon up, and there'd be no telling how far. So this is a very nice general overview of those first 12 and golden years of Motown. That's what this is all about: the general overview. Granted, if you want to investiagte further about a certain artist's music, there are numerous collections out there devoted just to them like the single "Ultimate Collection" CDs, or box collections of the artist. But, back to this one. Included within is a very nice 68-page booklet containing essays and phots of ALL the artists, plus musician credits, the track-by-track listing of the whole set, including original release date, label, and chart position.
In the middle of the book the different 45s are pictured all together on a two-page spread which was neat, and on the cover are the picture sleeves. It was an unusual move to put no artists and only songs on the back of the individual discs. The same goes for the back of the box. The paper inserts of the CD cases are record labels that have just the label name: Gordy, Soul, Motown, Tamla. Still, out of all the Motown best of various artists collections, this is the big one! It's great party music and dance music. People young and old will love this. The sound on here is terrific and powerful, but, yes, it is in mono. If you look in the back of the booklet, there is noted that the original single masters were used (the 45 RPM versions), so what does that tell you? Nevertheless, the sound is strong for 1992 remastering. Together, this set is living proof that Motown wasn't just a hit-making machine of a record-company, it was a feeling!

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This CD/DVD two-pack was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive! highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional (perhaps placing a bit too much emphasis on singer/frontman Chris Martin), this DVD and CD--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality. Culled from 400 hours of home video, the 40-minute "concert diary" represents a wasted opportunity, enjoyable for hardcore fans but offering no insight into the band or its individual members. Much better, then, to play the concert at healthy high volume, and appreciate Coldplay in the prime of their young career. --Jeff ShannonDescription
The two-disc set includes a 90-minute, nine-camera, super 16 live shoot taken from their July 21 and 22, 2003 performances at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney, Australia, as well as band commentary, a never before broadcast behind-the-scenes documentary, a special tour diary and the edited audio CD. The DVD and CD will also include two PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED live tracks- "The One I Love" and "Moses."Customer Reviews:

The show combines some tracks from first release Parachutes to 2nd release A Rush of Blood to the Head, as well as 3 non-album tracks. There's of course crowd favorites such as Trouble(with a huge end sing along), the Scientist, Clocks, Don't Panic, Yellow with a beautifully sung intro to album tracks such as Amsterdam, Daylight and Shiver. As for the 3 non-album tracks, I love 2: The One I Love, a big rocker with a catchy ending("sing it to me, oh oh") and See You Soon, a beautiful/melancholy acoustic ballad.
The editing problems are first evident in the Politik intro. While the track itself has that pounding beat, so does the editing and it's incredibly jarring. It reminds me of an old guy trying to get in the mindset of a young person by acting and talking fast so the hyperactive camera is a result of a "this is what the kids want" mentality. Like most DVD's, the lead singer Chris Martin tends to get the most attention. A talent yes but other band members get very quick shots before going back to Chris. At one point I almost thought I saw band member to Chris to band member to Chris rather than switching between the 4 of them.
It would've been nicer if they waited till X&Y came out so we can get Square One, Speed of Sound and Fix You live but that's alright. Knowing the record company, we'll get another one soon.

The Inimitable Jeff Beck Belies Age ! Best Live Guitarist !.......2007-06-02
A GREAT DISC, BUT STILL A HEARTBREAKER.......2007-06-01
First of all, it should be noted that this same CD is available direct from JB's own web site at less than half the price of this Japan import. Also, it's a great disc and I highly recommend it.
HOWEVER:
As you can see from the Los Angeles Greek Theater ticket image I loaded above, I attended that show. The Greek event had many additional songs, guests and aspects that were unique to that show. While this CD has some great performances, sadly, most of what made the Greek date so special never made it to this disc.
Below this is a review I wrote for some fellow JB-heads the morning after. After you read this, and then listen to this disc, you'll probably roll your eyes and go "aw, geeeeeezzzz", the way I did.
9/29/06:
Well, let's go see Jeff Beck and do The Time Warp Again, because this show was a complete 180 from my expectations. There was little of the recent techno-based material; the majority was from the Blow By Blow/Wired and earlier eras, so it was obviously designed to be a "greatest hits" show.
Of special surprise, after opening with "Beck's Bolero", the band launched into my favorite Billy Cobham tune, "Stratus". Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta isn't Cobham (but then, who is?), but Vinnie is a monster on the skins in his own right and did a great job.
This band was a quartet, with Jason Rebello on keys, who had all the Hammer-Korg lightning solo routines down to a -T. But the real treat came as the band were joined sporadically throughout the show by great guests, most notably Beth Hart.
Hart tore thru a smokin' set of "You Shook Me", "Going Down", which segued into James Brown's "I Got The Feelin", Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come", and more than adequately filled Rod Stewart's shoes on "I Ain't Superstitious". (NONE of which is on this CD)
L. Shankar, most notable for his stint with Peter Gabriel in the 90's, came out to assist on electric violin on a gorgeous "Naida", complete with a great Indian percussion turn by Colaiuta. (The L. Shankar version is not on this CD)
Without Jennifer Batten on stage to push him, there seemed to be less guitar-pyrotechnics from Beck. But, as there were nearly as many slow numbers as upbeat tunes, listening to him showcased against quiet accompaniment, especially with his unmatched skill at harmonics, was a real treat.
The show had one a few nasty hitches: Beck broke a string in one number, then his Marshall stack developed a bad intermittent and recurrent buzz that finally had him on his knees, guitar unslung and yelling "mother******!", while the tech desperately tried to solve the problem. You could see he was just mortified to his core, but the crowd gave him a consoling standing ovation.
After the first hour, they took a 10-minute break to "set-up", and a string ensemble joined the proceedings. Apparently, the Greek show was the only venue on this tour to get this:
9/11/06, Billboard Magazine: Jeff Beck has a special surprise in store for the audience at his Sept. 28 performance at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre. During the show, Beck will be joined by a 14-piece string section to perform for the first time a selection of material from his 1975 album "Blow by Blow" in the manner it was recorded. The string arrangements are being overseen by legendary producer George Martin.
The all-female, easy-on-the-eyes ensemble were thoroughly enjoyable on the slow numbers, but hopelessly drowned out otherwise.
That is, until the encores. The first was the version of Lennon's "A Day In The Life" he has been doing for the past few years, only with the string section, it was just stunning. (Not on this CD, either, arrrgggh) The last number was Beck, a cappella with a bottleneck, and the ensemble with Rebello conducting, on a gorgeous "Over The Rainbow". (Well, at least this made it to the disc!)
I enjoyed this show more than the 2001 Batten-quartet Gibson Ampitheatre show, which was marred by overwrought sound and annoying lighting. Here, the sound was perfectly balanced and the lighting respectfully subdued. I think Beck's playing is more raw and incendiary with Batten, but, again, this was an enjoyable experience tailored to the long-time fan, and with all the Greek-only facets, it was a very unique show.
(And, it could have made for an even more awesome 2CD set.)
(Sigh.)

Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.
Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12
It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.
There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

The second album by this Wilco side project has a nicely resilient band quality to it. Originally seen as Jeff Tweedy's noisier outlet, it's arguably as tuneful as his main band's most recent releases. A trio with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and producer/utility player/solo artist Jim O'Rourke, most of the songs are clearly the result of group interplay. However, it's the finishing touches, from arrangement flourishes to lyrics, that make them rise about hipster jamming. And just when you thought every cool guitar riff has already been discovered, the set starts off with a bang as "Hey Chicken" lets loose with a dazzler. There follows everything from an easy country groove ("The Ruling Class") to power pop ("Stupid As the Sun") and beautifully fragile balladry ("Answers to Your Questions"), to plenty more smart and mammoth guitar sounds. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:
I Liked It Better than the Most Recent Wilco CD.......2007-06-12
Great pop.......2007-05-17
The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is because of "Wreckroom", which features great 70s style guitar work but is eventually marred by the irritating wall of noise guitar style that, for me, ruined much of Ghost. Take that out and lop off the last 4 minutes of the song, and it would be my favorite song on the CD.
