Do you know many Progressive rock line-ups that can show off almost four millions albums sold of their first recording (You've read well, this is no spelling mistake !!!) ??? And we also have to add that this album was issued in the mid-Eighties, a quite negative period for Progressive rock ! Even YES and other high profile bands may not be able to say the same... Actually, AUTOGRAPH was an oficial line-up of the Russian government, the induced monopoly explaining those amazing numbers. AUTOGRAPH recorded then an excellent eponymous album (1985) in the style of GENESIS, with wide keyboards and Russian vocals. Recorded four years later, "Stone Land" is now reissued by Musea. This time, the style is an excellent FM rock between JOURNEY and TOTO. The particularity of the Russian vocals in the language of TOolstoï remains, as well as the references of Peter GABRIEL's group.

In its own way, this soundtrack to the cult SciFi Channel series embodies all the trends of film and, to a certain extent, TV-scoring circa 2006. Alien universes and mysterious plots are suggested by exotic instruments like gamelans and taikos; an otherwordly woman comes in at regular intervals to vocalize esoterically ("Lords of Kobol"); and thundering percussions suggest action ("Scar"). It's as if cult band Dead Can Dance were on the required listening list for American screen composers ("Gina Escapes"). Composer Bear McCreary pulls off the mix better than some of his contemporaries because, this being TV, he probably doesn't have the budget of a big Hollywood composer and so he can't rely on a ginormous orchestra to do the work for him (i.e., he can't just pile on dozens of violins to suggest mood). Look for ex-Oingo Boingo member Steve Bartek (who's orchestrated many of Danny Hellman's finest scores) on guest guitar on the final track, "Black Market." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great Album, even for nonfans!.......2007-07-10

This is a great album of music from one of the greatest scifi series ever. I've shared it with family and friends, who loved it, even those who normally don't enjoy orchestral music. The earthly nature of the music reflects more of a humanity than any of the pompous trumpet-driven garbage of other scifi series. Basically, its as great as the show, hands down.

Moody and Moving.......2007-07-08

I've been pining for this album ever since Final Cut aired. When the original Galactica theme burst into fanfaire as the "Colonial Anthem" at the end of the episode, I was sold! It's a very moody soundtrack with some great and iconic BSG music.

Great follow-on soundtrack to Season 1.......2007-06-27

An outstanding compilation of music from Season 2 of Battlestar Galactica. I also own Season 1, and this CD picks up where Season 1's left off. An interesting item to note is that some of the Season 2 songs are derivations of Season 1 songs. Highly recommend for Battlestar Galactica fans!

Choosing Between Season One or Two? Choose Two........2007-05-15

Although the Season One soundtrack has the wonderful "The Shape of Things to Come", I give the edge to this Season Two soundtrack for being a more cohesive whole. And there are hints of "The Shape of Things to Come" in the Season Two track "A Promise to Return", anyway. So if you're choosing between the soundtracks for Season One or Season Two, I'd suggest Season Two. Of course you'll also want the miniseries soundtrack!

Fantastic.......2007-05-12

Well, the music from BSG is fantastic in general, but this album was particularly wonderful, in my opinion. I really love Prelude to War, such a moving peace, the huge drums going off like cannons and the astounding strings just blew me away. I also really liked Baltar's Dream, Martial Law, amongst many others. I definitely recommend this soundtrack.

The American producer Creed Taylor produced some of the best recordings Antonio Carlos Jobim ever made. Taylor's lush strings, evocative woodwinds, and selection of top-notch jazz musicians were a perfect match for Jobim's spare, bossa nova-flavored compositions. This 1970 recording features Jobim backed by bassist Ron Carter, trombonist Urbie Green, flutist Hubert Law, and soprano saxophonist Joe Farrell. Several classics, such as "Children's Games," the lilting "Tereza My Love," and the two soft samba/swing renditions of Ary Barroso's "Brazil," are lovingly draped in the velvet arrangements of the then-young Brazilian sensation Eumir Deodato. Jobim's dry and achy vocals, along with his acoustic and rarely heard electric-piano playing, add the right sonic seasoning to this delightful disk. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Sublime.......2006-06-12

I'll add my praises of this disc to all the others. I fell totally in LOVE with Bossa Nova back in high school. I collected everything I could, from Best of Sergio Mendes - which is also very highly recommended to those who love this genre- to Joao Gilberto. In fact I made a trip to Brazil back in 1975 because I had to see this land where this sublime music came from. Anyway back to the disc. I had everything Jobim had recorded but this one intrigued me the most. It was his darkest and most complex. Worth adding to any collection of jazz, bossa, latin or anything else.

Another 5-star Jobim collaboration with producer Creed Taylor for his CTi label with arrangements by Deodato and a team of Jazz master musicians featuring Urbie Green and Hubert Laws.

Repertoire consists of Jobim material except for traditional Brazilian composer Ary Barroso's 'Brazil'.

Part of Jobim's compositions is music he composed for the film 'The Adventurers' also with arrangements by Deodato, issued in a very rare soundtrack album by Paramount label. Unfortunately, out of print.

Refer to the beautiful waltz 'Children's Games' which was also recorded by Elis Regina in her 'Elis & Tom' under the Portuguese title 'Chovendo na Roseira'.

A fundamental Jobim and Bossa Nova and Great Music album!

Mere words just aren't enough..........2006-02-09

This is the greatest in bossa nova bar none and would be my pick of what music straight from Heaven sounds like. Antonio Carlos Jobim is the underrated genius of the genre and his recordings are beyond words for description. Both cuts of "Brazil" are priceless and the song "Sabia" is worth the price of this album alone. The new 2002 reissue has new liner nothes and a crystal-clear sound, giving them the greatest of sound quality for the full effect. Do yourself a favor and get this, it will send you to places you never thought possible.

Stone Flower-Also Ran.......2006-02-01

While this is a very fine album, the tracks are not Jobim's best. These are prime examples of a great composer's lesser works, that produced by anyone else would be considered gems. The musicians on the album are all well known in their own right and the recording quality is excellent. A good album but not a great album

The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09

You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)

nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15

As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.

The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.

History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.

What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.

But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.

With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!

Rich and Soulful.......1999-10-02

Sergei Larin is excellent and he has a voice that pleases, but the delicious and haunting main attraction is the music, the music, the music! We can only be grateful that Russian music is becoming more and more available to us. This recording is beautifully support by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Rozhdestvensky. Chandos has given us another wonderful release. One quibble...the Russian lyrics are not transliterated from the Cyrillic, so we non-Russian speakers cannot follow along. I'll live with it. A CD to treasure.

Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09

The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.

Do you know many Progressive rock line-ups that can show off almost four millions albums sold of their first recording (You've read well, this is no spelling mistake !!!) ??? And we also have to add that this album was issued in the mid-Eighties, a quite negative period for Progressive rock ! Even YES and other high profile bands may not be able to say the same... Actually, AUTOGRAPH was an oficial line-up of the Russian government, the induced monopoly explaining those amazing numbers. AUTOGRAPH recorded then an excellent eponymous album (1985) in the style of GENESIS, with wide keyboards and Russian vocals. Recorded four years later, "Stone Land" is now reissued by Musea. This time, the style is an excellent FM rock between JOURNEY and TOTO. The particularity of the Russian vocals in the language of TOolstoï remains, as well as the references of Peter GABRIEL's group.
