Some bands like to thwart expectations, and Air is one of them. "Spacemaker," the opening of Pocket Symphony, sounds like a cousin to their instrumental retro-lounge "La Femme D'Argent" from 1998's Moon Safari, right down to the electric bass break in the middle. But this isn't a return to their breakthrough sound. "Spacemaker" really does pave the way for an almost classically somnolent outing from the French duo. Air once proclaimed, "In any classical song you can take five seconds of it and make a loop and you make a great pop song with it." I think they took that to heart on an album that echoes Debussy, Bach, and Reich, but which also contains a Beatlesque eclecticism redolent of Revolver. But instead of the Beatles' Indian flourishes, Air look to Japan, using a plucked koto on a couple of tracks, but also a zen garden sense of sonic placement. Although Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Neil Hannon of Divine Comedy sing on a couple of tunes--adding some emotional gravitas--Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel do most of the vocalizing in their preternatural Munchkins-on-Quaaludes lisp. Air are known for their chilled melancholy, but the mood of Pocket Symphony is introspectively somber. Only "Mer du Japon" rises to a groove, while the rest recline in a luxurious torpor. That mood works especially well on instrumentals like the minimalist cycles of "Night Sight" and the Enoesque "Lost Message," with its circular piano line and ice-sheathed string synthesizers. Pocket Symphony won't yield any pop hits, but it could be the soundtrack to endless rainy afternoons. --John Diliberto

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it if you actually want to listen to it.......2007-07-13

The copy protections are stifling. The computer can't recognize the cd so that makes it harder to put it on my treo. I gave 1 star for the 1 song worth listening to. I WILL NOT buy another Pocket Symphony CD.

5 out of 5 stars Air is God........2007-06-19

...or, at least, Air is Music. Since their endlessly beautiful Moon Safari, Air (along with Zero 7) is the group that produces CDs one can purchase without needing a preview; you can also count on their absolute genius. I bought this CD blindly. And as I suspected, it paid for itself with frissions up the spine from its mere perfection and unrelentling beauty. Even if you don't like the majority of the tracks (although this should only happen if you hate music), than one could buy this CD for Mer du Japon: Best. Song. Ever. Air epitomises their talent in this one track. Can you say "obsessed"? I can't stop listening to it. I must admit it does have some run-away tracks I'm not a fan of, but on the whole they don't hinder the CD's overall genius. Pure, absolute genius. The CD is rife with genius. No doubt.

4 out of 5 stars Sit back and enjoy... (not for anyone in a hurry).......2007-06-05

Ever since Air's instant-classic debut album, 1998's "Moon Safari", the French duo has sought to try and follow up to and meet that high standard. Their output since then has divided the fan base. I, for one, absolutely love the often-maligned 2001's "10,000 Hz Legend" album, but was disappointed with 2004's "Talkie Walkie" album. Now comes the new album.

"Pocket Symphony" (12 tracks, 48 min.) is as atmospheric as Air will get while not making a movie soundtrack. The instrumental opener "Space Maker" sets the stage. First single (in the UK--can you imagine Air getting a single released in the US?) "Once Upon a Time" is a beautiful dreamscape. Jarvis Cocker is the vocalist on "One Hell of a Party", which reminds me almost of cabaret-style music. Another instrumental "Mayfair Song" flowes into "Left Bank", bringing the duo back home. "Mer du Japon" ironically enough does not feature some of the Japanese sounds found on several other tracks here (such as the beautiful "Somewhere between Waking and Sleeping" and "Redhead Girl"), and in fact I find this song to be somehwat out of whack with the rest of the album. The instrumental closer "Night Shift" is the perfect ending to this album.

Is this album as good as "Moon Safari"? No, but Air may never be that good again, who knows. That said, "Pocket Symphony" is a fine album, which I have been enjoying ever since its release a few months ago. I happen to catch Air at Coachella in late April, and due to technical difficulties they only put on a brief set, which was very disappointing. I'd love to see them again in concert in better circumstances.

1 out of 5 stars Record Label Ruins Product.......2007-05-25

I bought this CD took it home and put it in my computer to dump it to my iPod and was surprised to find out my PC didn't even see the disk. I tried it on other computers in the house and it wouldn't see it at all. I immediately returned the disk and got a refund. The copy protections on this disk make it impossible to use the music the way I want to in my own home. I believe this is the record label messing with an artist's work. I love Air, but I hate this miserable attempt to control my access to the music.

British actress Minnie Driver's debut album is a more than credible affair--and a far cry from the usual travesty that unfolds with thespians who pine to be rock stars--outdistancing efforts by brethren like Don Johnson, Russell Crowe, and more recently Juliette Lewis. But then Driver was well on her way to becoming a recording artist as a member of the Puffs, Rock and Brown, but was sidetracked when she scored the starring role in 1995's Circle of Friends. If this CD is any indication, she should have rethought her priorities. Driver's voice is a wistful and stylish hybrid of a rather morose and breathy Kathleen Edwards and a more austere Sheryl Crow, raiding her own rather colorful autobiography for material, giving fans a chance to pick apart her rather melancholy lyrics to decipher which one of her famous beaus--like Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Josh Brolin, or John Cusack--inspired them. Driver convinced members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn (whose brother is her agent) to play join her in the studio, giving her music a deft authentic gloss that might not have surfaced had she just used nameless studio pros. As a result Driver's music is languid and sensual dream pop, verging on alt country, but never making it over that rickety wooden fence. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

The delete bins of history are littered with the recording attempts of actors who fancy themselves as singers. In the case of Minnie Driver, music actually came first. She began singing in London's jazz clubs as a teenager, eventually joining a band that landed a deal with Island Records. She was in the midst of negotiating a solo deal with EMI when the hit film Circle of Friends came along and changed her life. But she always longed to return to music, and with the release of Everything I've Got in My Pocket, Driver has made the album she's been dreaming of making since her teenage years. Backed by a group that includes members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn's band, the album deftly blends Driver's sultry, bittersweet vocals with sparse, atmospheric pop and a hint of contemporary folk. With ten original songs and an unforgettable cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart," Driver's debut marks the arrival of an accomplished singer-songwriter.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very mellow soothing sexy CD.......2007-06-01

Minnie Driver, what can you say...

Very good actress, believable in romance, funny in comedy, spellbinding in her current project " The Riches", is here a self examining songwriter, and once again a very good one. As a bonus (or due to not enough original tracks to fill out a CD) there is a heart wrenching version of Sprinsteen's "Hungry Heart" that is also quite memorable.
Her voice is a sexy, soft, raspy and breathy, no power balads here, and no iratating vocal runs. It gives it a refreshingly honest feel, like it is meant for just you.

If you are looking for something fairly fresh and mellow, (performed by a grown up beautiful woman) you will not be dissapointed with this buy!

4 out of 5 stars Everything I've got in my pocket.......2007-05-16

A pretty good CD. I really enjoy the title song as well as a few others, but I was not impressed with some songs including the bruce springsteen remake. I would recommend it for the listener trying to find a voice that is enchanting and different than what is currently available in music today

4 out of 5 stars Praise to Ms. Driver.......2006-09-07

Wow! I did not expect much from this album but that just goes to show you should not judge a CD by its cover (or in in this case by its actress/songstress). Minnie Driver has a hauntingly beautiful voice that is reminiscent of Sarah McLachan. I love every song on this album including Ms. Driver's remake of "Hungry Heart." The song that drew me in however is number 6's "Deeper Water." I was sunk with the first note. *smile*

I truly hope Ms. Driver will follow this album with another. It will be a great loss to us if she does not.

4 out of 5 stars if you like tori amos you will like minnie.......2006-03-22

this is the second time I bought this album. I lost the original in a house fire and I like it so much I had to replace it.

4 out of 5 stars impressive.......2006-03-02

I got this CD not expecting much based on the fact it is usually a taboo thing to try to cross over from acting to singing....Boy was I ever wrong, she is amazing, listening to her beautiful voice just calms the soul.If you like Dido or Enya, you will definetly like Minnie.Definetly a must to add to your collection. There is not one song that sticks out,you have to listen to the whole album to appreciate the beauty of it.

Ah, the favorites! They go on and on! Lighthouse is mine.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite JT Albums.......2007-01-13

Songs from this album have remained in my head since the day I borrowed my roommate's vinyl album 20some yrs ago. It is one of my favorite James Taylor albums. "Sarah Maria" is an incredibly beautiful song and, stupidly, I have always liked the goofy "Gorilla".

4 out of 5 stars Taylor's Second Best.......2007-01-02

James Taylor's Seventh Album & last recording for Warner Brothers is definitely his biggest self-written album in four years and after his perfect release in 1972 called "One man dog".
This album surely ranks among the best Albums Taylor ever released, however "One man dog" remains my favorite album for this great artist.

5 out of 5 stars I bought this album because of the great reviews here.......2006-01-21

This is my favorite James Taylor album.... whether it's his best.... I don't know..... what I can say is that I agree with a review here that says that Junkie's Lament gives me the chills...... this is one heck of a beautiful song...... listen to the harmonizations once Carly Simon comes in along with Garfunkel and JT..... the three part harmonizations are so beautiful...... when she comes in on the la la la la las before the song switches to it's final lament, it's stunning.... it's a wonderful sound.......... it's a great album and it's my favorite James Taylor album..... I think it's my favorite because it's his jazziest!!!!

3 out of 5 stars A standard James Taylor album.......2005-08-21

James Taylor has always been an amazing singer songwriter, however, In the pocket is nowhere near the masterpiece that everyone is raving about. It is indeed just a standard good album with many legitimate album cuts. There are no hits after shower the people but every song is consistent. Don't buy this expecting another sweet baby james, hbuy it knowing that it is just nice! A good buy if you like JT.

As a jam band in the vein of Blues Traveler and Phish, Spin Doctors built a grassroots following by playing anywhere and everywhere. After a live EP caught their early potential, they released this uncharacteristically tight debut album. Featuring several hits that could have appeared on a Steve Miller Band album, Kryptonite became an immediate frat-rock favorite. Thanks to a spotless production, the tight groove of "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong," "Two Princes," and "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" immediately connected with audiences who seemed to find singer Chris Barron's hapless hippie lyrics and goofy grin a winning combination. --Rob O'Connor

Album Description

Reissue of their 1991 album. Includes 3 live previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Yo Mamas A Pajama', 'Sweet Widow' & 'Stepped On A Crack'.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still groovy after all this time!.......2007-04-11

What the devil happened to the Spin Doctors? This album is so tight, and full of funkiness, it really makes you wonder why you haven't heard from these guys recently. My band is actually planning on covering at least three of the tunes on this album.

5 out of 5 stars I think the Spin Doctors guy has a beard now.......2006-05-05

I don't know why in the world I ever bought this CD. I was young, stupid, and I needed the money. Wait, that's why I did something else. Never mind. Anyway, I admit I used to like this CD. A lot. I was in high school and I didn't know better. Well, I guess I shouldn't be so hard on these guys. There's not much of anything out there that can survive 15 years. For example, I'm sure if I saw the way I dressed 15 years ago I would award myself no stars.

So in the spirit of fairness, I'll give Pocket Full of Kryptonite the rating I would have given it in 1991: Five Freakin' Stars, man! Rock on, Spin Docs!

5 out of 5 stars Even Superman Would Like This Album.......2006-01-22

I was cleaning out stuff as "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" fell from the pile, in cassette format, no less. I hadn't heard the album for two or three years, so I loaded it. Fifteen years after its release PFoK remains intensely creative, funky, wonderful, and carefree.

In all honesty The Spin Doctors, with this their debut album, delivered so much more to hang on to and stick with than, say, Cold Play today. There's not a dud cut from beginning to end, and seven or eight cuts are simply top notch creations.

I know The Doctors were not able to continue at this level, but this one album alone was practically an entire career.

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut Album but Needs Remastering!.......2006-01-19

This is one great album if you like great musicians jamming together ala the Allman Brothers Band but only better. While the Allman Brothers was really about Duanne and Dickie, this band has all of its members contributing equally and magnificently whenever they are called upon to come to the fore. It's almost like a jazz band with each member expected to do a solo or to showcase their talents and then to fade back and support the next guy. Not only is the guitarist fantastic playing great rhythm and lead guitar but the bass player is excellent as well. Very, very tight rhythm section and great vocals added to great songs and a decent production make this an excellent album. The only problem is that the sound quality isn't that great given what's out there at the moment and so I'd recommend waiting for an enhanced and remastered version of this to come out.

5 out of 5 stars BEST 4 Bucks I ever Spent on a CD!!!.......2005-10-25

Spin Doctors are the only full-on rock band I can honestly remember hearing since I can recall listening to radio at about 9 years old! What blows my mind is that there is hardly any music from childhood that I can even stand to listen to w/out laughing, or straining my brain's memory to check if I've heard "that song" before.

The exception is "Two Princes" from the Spins...followed by of course, their Little Miss Can't Be Wrong double hit off of this quite amazing album. I even remember seeing them play a little later on SNL performing before 2P was even a hit.

Having memorized these songs since that age & never being able to successfully shake them from my memory, I found the album mint for $3.99, and was straight blown away (as both a drummer and a singer personally, as well as a major guitar afficianado) by the quality of this recording and the incredible musicianship of this band.

'Refrigerator Car' and 'Shinbone...' are standout hits in the rock drumming arena, as well as '40 or 50' for its intricate work. Hearing them later cover to near flawless perfection 'Spanish Castle Magic' on the Stone Free Hendrix tribute disc further respawned my interest in this unique band that has not only remained together despite their 2-hit wonder status, but also released a full new album for '05 and are back into extensive touring.

This CD is not just held together, but exemplified for its completeness in repeatible listening sessions cover-to-cover with seriously only about 1 or 2 weak tracks at the very most, which even then are still tolerable, and by no means bad, just not as great of high-point-hook-laden, catchy Sing-along tight-jam-rock of the rest of the disc.

Major Props to this band for letting me on stage to surprise the poop out of my fiance (not literally) by allowing me to propose to her in front of the audience right after dedicating the chorus of '2 Princes' to her before slipping the ring on her finger! Their hospitality to allow me to pull that off, and post-show chatting is almost unmatched in a band of such talented musical stature. A must see live, but don't go w/out first knowing this album like the back of your hand...you'll appreciate their performance all the more, trust me!

Highly recommended, especially for the current price!

Known by most listeners for their 80's hit Oh Yeah this group has been making cool creative music for years and Pocket Universe is no exception. After a brief introduction about the big bang and aliens the cd launches into sci-fi dance club heaven.Dieter Meier's vocals blend with throbbing beats, quirky touches, catchy melodies all climaxing with the spastic heart attack inducing Resistor.Like most of Yello's music it's not quite normal but given all the bland dance tunes around nowadays that's a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars For Yello fans and newcomers alike.......2005-11-10

Yello has been chugging along consistently ever since their debut on Ralph Records with Solid Pleasure. They have been setting the standard for audio mixing and production ever since. This recording moves into some new territory for Yello with regard to composition, but the production is mind-boggling. They just keep getting better at producing sounds that vibrate holographically. This is a great recording for newcomers to the group. Lots of seductive high energy dance grooves and lots of different moods.....and a sense of humor!

5 out of 5 stars This is the benchmark to all things techno!.......2003-07-16

I resisted buying this at first. Priced high, and heck - what could compare to Flag or One Second anyway? After 3 or 4 listens, it started to sink in and finally it blew me away! (and still does).Unfortunately, it makes the "Old School" Yello seem dated by comparison, so be forewarned...

If you like any of the later Yello (ie. Zebra), this is the best of them all. It's what I judge all other electro/techno music by. The tracks are great, and yet so cleanly mastered, you can play it louder than most albums without audible distortion.
A must! Beg, borrow or buy one used if you have to...

5 out of 5 stars #1 of all my CDs.......2003-04-17

I have been a Yello fan since 1984, and I admitt, when I first listened to this CD I was not impressed... because it just didn't sound like "typical" Yello. But I gave it a chance... and very quickly, it became my favorite album in my collection of 1000+ CDs. I bought the album three years ago, and it STILL is my favorite album. Elegant, dark, almost EVIL, the music will steal your soul and hold it captive until you can work up the strength to turn it off. Play it loud with a strong sub-woofer... you'll never come back.

5 out of 5 stars Sooooo worth it!!!.......2002-08-07

Listen here! What Boris Blank(the music half of this duo) has done here is better than all other Yello stuff, and I've listened to it all. It is gothic, eerie, smooth, crisp, always protean, and so intelligent. Oakenfold, Sigweed, the Chems sit at Blank's knee and take notes from their mentor! I played this when I got my stereo system installed in my car, and customers and employees walked up with a wide-eyed "Wow!" expression on their faces, "Who IS this?" they all asked. It never fails when I play this to strangers.
I've played this prob over 500 times, and I still marvel at what has been done on this disc. When I play cds while working out, I still get excited knowing I have this to turn to when my spirits ebb. Those who claim its repetitive are not listeners. The ominous, playfull tapestry it weaves takes me to imaginary places I have never encountered anywhere, except maybe Elfmann, Herrmann, Pixies. I will forever admire this opus, and have already given it as a gift to my 'cooler' friends.

5 out of 5 stars More "New Wave than Cosmic" Furnace.......2007-03-23

If you're even looking at this album, you know who Roger Powell is and probably at which arc the Todd / Utopia set was in at this given moment.

If you've heard Cosmic Furnace, you realize that, like Todd's Initiation, it was something more of a "Wow, look at this synthesizer -- pretty soon we'll have flying cars!" moment in music history. You and I can appreciate the finer aspects of it, and enjoy it in all its techno goodness, but let's be honest, in the final analysis, that's really what we're looking at.

What we see here is a much more refined synth project, produced by Todd, more new wave, including a very good reworking of Utopia's "Windows" -- and Mr. Triscuits, for that matter. I might put it somewhere inbetween ...Oops and Adventures for the feel of it, just more heavy on the synth, and you already know what Roger Powell sounds like, so hey, if you want even more of it, here you go :-)

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2005-03-22

I bought this on a whim from a used cd/record store, with only the caption "weird, melodic, electro-pop; commercial jingles for the clinically insane."
Those were the best $6 I've ever spent. The cd has addicting beats and bizarre lyrics. What an amazing upbeat cd! I would say it is like the Postal Service on methamphetamines. From children to hipsters, this cd will be appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars almost perfect except for..............2003-12-31

This album is wonderful. The only exception in my book is the 'hidden' track, which is made for kids not the people enjoying this album. A few of the instrumentals can get tedious but are enjoyable in a way.
The rest of the tracks are strange, different little nuggets. '1983' is my fave but every song following it falls under the realm of instant happiness. 'Best Friend' should have been picked up by VW for a Beetle commercial. These songs are feel-good, sunny morning toe tappers that can make just about everyone walk away feeling just a little more bouyant. This is one album I can truly say I am glad I bought.

5 out of 5 stars This album is too cool !.......2003-09-23

This is one of the coolest albums I've heard in years. I can't wait for their next release! The music is original from start to finish. Lots of different syles are explored. A great debut effort. After listening to so many albums where every song sounds the same this is REALLY a breath of fresh air. I love the use of extensive use synthesizers with acoustic and electric instruments. The band really explores many different sounds. The lyrics are mostly quirky and fun but they all have substance underneath. The mixes and multi-layered textures and wide variety of vocals used are really neat. I love this album! Finally something different and good.

5 out of 5 stars LET ME GET DOWN LET ME GET DOWN.......2002-10-25

I think the coolest and most bizarre song I own out of the 5300 songs...I have is Electric Pocket Radio. One Millionth customer is just a cool as hell song layered and built up perfectly. BEEP BEEP Love is unavoidably addictive, and everything in between just rocks. Get this album, you couldn't possibly regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Original!.......2002-10-06

If you're looking for some awesome songs that are unlike anything you've ever heard before, look no further. This is an awesome album all around, but the song Fuzzy has got to be the best Incredible Moses Leroy has ever done. I first heard it on a TV ad for the italian motorscooter Vespa. It's so adorable!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-01-25

Dennis Brown is an artist who has many many albums out since his career was launched perhaps over 100 albums. This compilation features his early recordings, many cover versions, but this is an extensive collection that features his voice at an early raw stage but very infectiousyou may find yourself listening to this collection over and over.A must buy if you are into reggae, don't forget that DENNIS BROWN is BOB MARLEY'S favorite singer hence his tag "THE CROWN PRINCE OF REGGAE"

5 out of 5 stars The crown prince of reggae.......2006-04-27

After the passing of the prophet Bob Marley Dennis Brown took over as the king of reggae. This anthology is as hard hitting as Bobs legend my favorite money in my pocket, the remake of Otis Reddings dock of the bay and silhouettes just to name a few.Buy this record it will never come out of the cd changer rewind!

5 out of 5 stars Sooooooooo Good!.......2004-01-09

If you like roots reggae at all, you should own at least one Dennis Brown album. If you're going to own only one Dennis Brown album, why not own this one? This album has most of his great hits, spanning most of his career. The sound quality is great, there's a nice 8 page booklet, 2 discs, 48 tracks... After listening to this anthology, I now realize my reggae collection had been incomplete without it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Anthology.......2002-08-15

A truly great collection! Perfect for the new, old, all listeners of the Crowned Prince of Reggae Music - D. Brown!
