Some bands like to thwart expectations, and Air is one of them. "Spacemaker," the opening of Pocket Symphony, sounds like a cousin to their instrumental retro-lounge "La Femme D'Argent" from 1998's Moon Safari, right down to the electric bass break in the middle. But this isn't a return to their breakthrough sound. "Spacemaker" really does pave the way for an almost classically somnolent outing from the French duo. Air once proclaimed, "In any classical song you can take five seconds of it and make a loop and you make a great pop song with it." I think they took that to heart on an album that echoes Debussy, Bach, and Reich, but which also contains a Beatlesque eclecticism redolent of Revolver. But instead of the Beatles' Indian flourishes, Air look to Japan, using a plucked koto on a couple of tracks, but also a zen garden sense of sonic placement. Although Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Neil Hannon of Divine Comedy sing on a couple of tunes--adding some emotional gravitas--Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel do most of the vocalizing in their preternatural Munchkins-on-Quaaludes lisp. Air are known for their chilled melancholy, but the mood of Pocket Symphony is introspectively somber. Only "Mer du Japon" rises to a groove, while the rest recline in a luxurious torpor. That mood works especially well on instrumentals like the minimalist cycles of "Night Sight" and the Enoesque "Lost Message," with its circular piano line and ice-sheathed string synthesizers. Pocket Symphony won't yield any pop hits, but it could be the soundtrack to endless rainy afternoons. --John DilibertoAlbum Description
From the creators of the classic albums "Moon Safari" and "Talkie Walkie", Air deliver a career masterpiece, their most seductive and accomplished work to date.Features guest vocals by Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy).
Includes the single "Once Upon A Time".

Sit back and enjoy... (not for anyone in a hurry).......2007-06-05
"Pocket Symphony" (12 tracks, 48 min.) is as atmospheric as Air will get while not making a movie soundtrack. The instrumental opener "Space Maker" sets the stage. First single (in the UK--can you imagine Air getting a single released in the US?) "Once Upon a Time" is a beautiful dreamscape. Jarvis Cocker is the vocalist on "One Hell of a Party", which reminds me almost of cabaret-style music. Another instrumental "Mayfair Song" flowes into "Left Bank", bringing the duo back home. "Mer du Japon" ironically enough does not feature some of the Japanese sounds found on several other tracks here (such as the beautiful "Somewhere between Waking and Sleeping" and "Redhead Girl"), and in fact I find this song to be somehwat out of whack with the rest of the album. The instrumental closer "Night Shift" is the perfect ending to this album.
Is this album as good as "Moon Safari"? No, but Air may never be that good again, who knows. That said, "Pocket Symphony" is a fine album, which I have been enjoying ever since its release a few months ago. I happen to catch Air at Coachella in late April, and due to technical difficulties they only put on a brief set, which was very disappointing. I'd love to see them again in concert in better circumstances.

British actress Minnie Driver's debut album is a more than credible affair--and a far cry from the usual travesty that unfolds with thespians who pine to be rock stars--outdistancing efforts by brethren like Don Johnson, Russell Crowe, and more recently Juliette Lewis. But then Driver was well on her way to becoming a recording artist as a member of the Puffs, Rock and Brown, but was sidetracked when she scored the starring role in 1995's Circle of Friends. If this CD is any indication, she should have rethought her priorities. Driver's voice is a wistful and stylish hybrid of a rather morose and breathy Kathleen Edwards and a more austere Sheryl Crow, raiding her own rather colorful autobiography for material, giving fans a chance to pick apart her rather melancholy lyrics to decipher which one of her famous beaus--like Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Josh Brolin, or John Cusack--inspired them. Driver convinced members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn (whose brother is her agent) to play join her in the studio, giving her music a deft authentic gloss that might not have surfaced had she just used nameless studio pros. As a result Driver's music is languid and sensual dream pop, verging on alt country, but never making it over that rickety wooden fence. --Jaan UhelszkiAlbum Description
The delete bins of history are littered with the recording attempts of actors who fancy themselves as singers. In the case of Minnie Driver, music actually came first. She began singing in London's jazz clubs as a teenager, eventually joining a band that landed a deal with Island Records. She was in the midst of negotiating a solo deal with EMI when the hit film Circle of Friends came along and changed her life. But she always longed to return to music, and with the release of Everything I've Got in My Pocket, Driver has made the album she's been dreaming of making since her teenage years. Backed by a group that includes members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn's band, the album deftly blends Driver's sultry, bittersweet vocals with sparse, atmospheric pop and a hint of contemporary folk. With ten original songs and an unforgettable cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart," Driver's debut marks the arrival of an accomplished singer-songwriter.Customer Reviews:
Very mellow soothing sexy CD.......2007-06-01
Very good actress, believable in romance, funny in comedy, spellbinding in her current project " The Riches", is here a self examining songwriter, and once again a very good one. As a bonus (or due to not enough original tracks to fill out a CD) there is a heart wrenching version of Sprinsteen's "Hungry Heart" that is also quite memorable.
Her voice is a sexy, soft, raspy and breathy, no power balads here, and no iratating vocal runs. It gives it a refreshingly honest feel, like it is meant for just you.
If you are looking for something fairly fresh and mellow, (performed by a grown up beautiful woman) you will not be dissapointed with this buy!

As a jam band in the vein of Blues Traveler and Phish, Spin Doctors built a grassroots following by playing anywhere and everywhere. After a live EP caught their early potential, they released this uncharacteristically tight debut album. Featuring several hits that could have appeared on a Steve Miller Band album, Kryptonite became an immediate frat-rock favorite. Thanks to a spotless production, the tight groove of "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong," "Two Princes," and "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" immediately connected with audiences who seemed to find singer Chris Barron's hapless hippie lyrics and goofy grin a winning combination. --Rob O'ConnorAlbum Description

Even Superman Would Like This Album.......2006-01-22
In all honesty The Spin Doctors, with this their debut album, delivered so much more to hang on to and stick with than, say, Cold Play today. There's not a dud cut from beginning to end, and seven or eight cuts are simply top notch creations.
I know The Doctors were not able to continue at this level, but this one album alone was practically an entire career.
Great Debut Album but Needs Remastering!.......2006-01-19
BEST 4 Bucks I ever Spent on a CD!!!.......2005-10-25
The exception is "Two Princes" from the Spins...followed by of course, their Little Miss Can't Be Wrong double hit off of this quite amazing album. I even remember seeing them play a little later on SNL performing before 2P was even a hit.
Having memorized these songs since that age & never being able to successfully shake them from my memory, I found the album mint for $3.99, and was straight blown away (as both a drummer and a singer personally, as well as a major guitar afficianado) by the quality of this recording and the incredible musicianship of this band.
'Refrigerator Car' and 'Shinbone...' are standout hits in the rock drumming arena, as well as '40 or 50' for its intricate work. Hearing them later cover to near flawless perfection 'Spanish Castle Magic' on the Stone Free Hendrix tribute disc further respawned my interest in this unique band that has not only remained together despite their 2-hit wonder status, but also released a full new album for '05 and are back into extensive touring.
This CD is not just held together, but exemplified for its completeness in repeatible listening sessions cover-to-cover with seriously only about 1 or 2 weak tracks at the very most, which even then are still tolerable, and by no means bad, just not as great of high-point-hook-laden, catchy Sing-along tight-jam-rock of the rest of the disc.
Major Props to this band for letting me on stage to surprise the poop out of my fiance (not literally) by allowing me to propose to her in front of the audience right after dedicating the chorus of '2 Princes' to her before slipping the ring on her finger! Their hospitality to allow me to pull that off, and post-show chatting is almost unmatched in a band of such talented musical stature. A must see live, but don't go w/out first knowing this album like the back of your hand...you'll appreciate their performance all the more, trust me!
Highly recommended, especially for the current price!

If you like any of the later Yello (ie. Zebra), this is the best of them all. It's what I judge all other electro/techno music by. The tracks are great, and yet so cleanly mastered, you can play it louder than most albums without audible distortion.

Sooooo worth it!!!.......2002-08-07
I've played this prob over 500 times, and I still marvel at what has been done on this disc. When I play cds while working out, I still get excited knowing I have this to turn to when my spirits ebb. Those who claim its repetitive are not listeners. The ominous, playfull tapestry it weaves takes me to imaginary places I have never encountered anywhere, except maybe Elfmann, Herrmann, Pixies. I will forever admire this opus, and have already given it as a gift to my 'cooler' friends.

More "New Wave than Cosmic" Furnace.......2007-03-23
If you've heard Cosmic Furnace, you realize that, like Todd's Initiation, it was something more of a "Wow, look at this synthesizer -- pretty soon we'll have flying cars!" moment in music history. You and I can appreciate the finer aspects of it, and enjoy it in all its techno goodness, but let's be honest, in the final analysis, that's really what we're looking at.
What we see here is a much more refined synth project, produced by Todd, more new wave, including a very good reworking of Utopia's "Windows" -- and Mr. Triscuits, for that matter. I might put it somewhere inbetween ...Oops and Adventures for the feel of it, just more heavy on the synth, and you already know what Roger Powell sounds like, so hey, if you want even more of it, here you go :-)
Highly recommended!

The rest of the tracks are strange, different little nuggets. '1983' is my fave but every song following it falls under the realm of instant happiness. 'Best Friend' should have been picked up by VW for a Beetle commercial. These songs are feel-good, sunny morning toe tappers that can make just about everyone walk away feeling just a little more bouyant. This is one album I can truly say I am glad I bought.
