They were together just five years, and between the potent era of 1969-`71, Creedence Clearwater Revival reached the Top 10 with nine different singles, an accomplishment the band's architect John Fogerty has cracked just once ("The Old Man Down the Road") since CCR's demise in 1972. And now that the three-decade battle between Fogerty and the Fantasy label has ended, the man-and-band reunion comes full circle with a 25-song compilation that packages many of CCR's made-for-radio hits with a sprinkling of solo numbers and live recordings from recent Fogerty tours. Fogerty hasn't penned a whole lot of clunkers, and his CCR catalog sparkles with modernly remastered chooglin' classics like "Bad Moon Rising," "Travelin' Band," "Fortunate Son," "Lookin' Out My Backdoor" and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain." But the non-chronological sequencing is unpredictable, and far too many Creedence gems were left on the cutting room floor to call this package "The Ultimate." --Scott Holter

From Amazon.ca

John Fogerty has finally made peace with his old label, Fantasy Records. One of the results of this is the first ever assemblage of his Creedence Clearwater Revival hits with his less classic solo work. The Long Road Home is a mixed bag, though. Since there are plenty of worthy Creedence hits packages, fans likely already own 14 of these 25 tracks (four more CCR songs appear in recently recorded concert versions). But there's never been a compilation of Fogerty's inconsistent, occasionally inspired solo career, and unfortunately only seven tunes from six studio discs make the cut. There are no selections from the spotty Eye of the Zombie or his first post-Creedence covers album, the excellent Blue Ridge Rangers. Only two tracks from 1975's terrific yet obscure John Fogerty make an appearance, and both are represented in spirited but inferior live performances. The Long Road Home remains an enjoyable listen, but these limitations prevent it from living up to its "ultimate" subtitle. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

This comprehensive retrospective features, for the first time ever, all of the songwriter's most poignant and enduring hits. Included are seminal tracks from the Creedence catalog, along with the crème de la crème of his solo work, including "Centerfield," "Déjà Vu (All Over Again)," and "Hot Rod Heart" from the GRAMMY(R) Award-winning CD Blue Moon Swamp. Also on the disc are four new tracks recorded live by Fogerty during his 2005 tour of the United States: "Hey Tonight," "Bootleg," "Keep on Chooglin'," and a blistering rendition of "Fortunate Son."

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, nostalgic CD!.......2007-06-27

I made a wise choice in selecting this CD. It's got all my favorite John Fogerty/CCR songs on it.

4 out of 5 stars Simplistic.......2007-06-18

This is a gem I didn't know had been released over a year ago. CCR had very simple music (no big bands), understandable lyrics and a comedic twist that in some ways was ahead of it's time. Most lyrics were written by John Fogerty and though the band only lasted about 5 years, John went on to become a very very good single artist (Old Man Down The Road, etc). Here we have some of CCR's greatest hits (some fans will be disappointed with some that were not included), some from John's single forays and some that are live. I don't care for live albums much but these are well recorded. Great liner notes are included which will give you a capsule view of John and the bands career. Chronicle volume 1 by CCR would be a great companion with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fogerty.......2007-06-10

Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

3 out of 5 stars Another Never Received Item from Amazon.......2007-06-08

Although I placed my order on May 4, to date I have not received this CD or the other three I ordered at the same time. Apparently they're lost somewhere in U.S. Mail limbo at a recovery center. Amazon refuses to issue me a credit and I'm out $50. Don't ever take advantage of their free shipping option. You may never get your order!

5 out of 5 stars The best CCR as well as John Fogerty coll........2007-05-23

This is a great, and I think the best Creedence Clearwater best of. I prefer it in part because of the bonus of Fogerty's best solo material, which holds up its head well in the lofty company of his former band's greatest hits, and also because it avoids the long, jam-like tracks (Grapevine, etc.) that just are not on par with the shorter tracks from the CCR catalog. While one need not be religious about it, there is a reason that most great rock and roll songs are executed in around three minutes or less. This collection is rock solid--a real pleasure. Even a few live tracks and a scrambled sequence add to the cohesion and the enjoyment rather than detract from it. I have had the standard CCR collections, and I prefer this one. There is also a non-musical reason to get it. If you tend to believe John Fogerty, and I do, that he was ripped off and mistreated by his record co. and even fellow band-mates (I like democracy most of the time myself, but John conceived and did the conceptual theme, the lead guitar, the great songwriting, the singing, etc. all himself, for hit after hit after hit, so it was a bit silly for his band members to demand equal time, however worthy their instrumental contributions may have been) there is an extra-musical reason to buy this as well. After the long years of bitter lawsuits, including one where Fogerty was brought to court charged with stealing from songs he himself had written, the higher up at CCR's label Fantasy finally left. This opened the door for smarter and cooler, if not more ethical, heads to prevail at Fantasy. After decades of not owning the music he had written and created, etc., John finally got some consideration. He was welcomed home (thus the title) at last and offered the deal of doing this collection of his old CCR and newer solo material and odd live track, making a glorious collection and long-deserved victory and vindication of sorts. Good for him. Who knows how many years the nonsense under his nemesis took off John's life, but here's hoping this puts 'em back. Thank you John--we are happy for you!

3 out of 5 stars The Return of John Fogerty.......2007-06-18

I always thought of Creedence Clearwater Revival as the John Fogerty Show. The band was driven by his aggressive, skilled guitar playing, his strong singing, and his songs, many of which are enjoyable, even if on a lightweight level.

So, on the strength of AOR hits like Rock and Roll Girls, and Centerfield, we got this CD. Fogerty remains a good, but lightweight talent. Best tunes are the aforementioned Centerfield, one of his best, most enjoyable songs, and the often-played Rock and Roll Girls. Vanz Cant Danz is an interesting tune-tale about a pick pocket. Other than that, the overplayed "Old Man Down The Road" is recycled Creedence, Mr.Greed is an uncharacteristic whine about the evil boss man, and I saw it on TV is a lightweight commentary on the media.

If you really crave Fogerty, this is a good album; otherwise, opt for the livelier collection "Premonition."

5 out of 5 stars Good Music for almost anyone........2007-02-08

Anyone who likes any Creedance Clearwater songs will like this CD and probably any John Fogerty Music. There is one song, "I Saw it on TV", in particular that is strait from a creedance Tune, it's unmistakable if you know creedance music. John Fogerty is just one of those people that is Gifted with musical ability and that is obviouse when you hear his music. The Old Man Down the road, Centerfield and Rock and Roll Girls are Classics.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Sound, Great Guitar Work And A Singer With A Social Conscience!.......2006-09-12

This album shows just what a unique talent John Fogerty truly is. He goes from the Country "chicken pickin' guitar work on Big Train( From Memphis) all the way to the hard rocking Mr. Greed in which he lashes out at the way he was treated by certain record executives. I am also happy to say that his Anti War stance is alive and well as can be heard on the song "I Saw It On TV" where a Father grieves the loss of his son in a futile and unnecessary war which only boosted Corporate Profits. This album should be compulsory listening for any teenage aspiring guitarists and songwriters.Mr. Fogerty may have grown up in California but his heart is still in the Louisianna Bayous. Naturally 5 stars for this album and I would give it 10 if I could.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money "Premonition Is the Best DVD J-F Made.......2006-07-18

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ANY CD'S OR DVD'S JOHN FOGERTY HAS MADE.PREMONITION IS BY FAR THE MOST EXCELLENT OF ALL HIS DVD'S.THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER ONE TO TAKE IT'S PLACE.HAVE IT LOVE IT.NOTHING I EVER BOUGHT IN DVD'S" BY JOHN FOGERTY WILL COMPARE TO PREMONITION.I GIVE IT A 10 PLUS.

Fogerty shows diverstiy in this forgotten little gem. Covers of Hank Williams Sr.,the 5 Blind Boys of Alabama, and Jimmy Rogers, and other classic country and gospel tunes are here. Though I prefer the Country tunes to the Gospel covers,(John's voice is better geared toward Rock and Country)this collection of material is definately worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Add 5 more stars.......2007-01-22

Five stars is not enough. This is a great great album.
Although this may date me, I bought this album new in 1973 when it first came out. It remains to this day my favorite album of all time.
Being a huge CCR fan from the opening chords of Proud Mary when it was first played on AM radio back in 1968, this album forever changed the music I began to listen to and come to love. It may have taken me a few more years to "discover" the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Billy Joe Shaver, George, Willie, (and the list goes on....) if it were not for this album. For that I am eternally thankful to John Fogerty.

While the songs are not originals he makes them his own. I'm sure 'ol Hank smiled when he first heard Jambalaya.
Back in 1973 doing a one-man-band record was not like doing it today with all the digital tools available. John Fogerty did this and made it sound convincing using a bunch of talent and the technology available at the time. And it still sounds great.
I wonder if John's brother had Photo Shop on his PC in '73 to do that great cover shot of the "band". The original cover didnt have Fogerty's name on it, his name only appearing on the back in small letters, Arranged & Produced by John Fogerty. This particular cover came out a few years later as a Fantasy Records re-release.
Although I own the vinyl copies of both covers I dont have the CD of this cover so I don't know if its remasterd or not. There were several releases of this CD over the years with the original cover artwork as well as an awesome sounding remastered Japanese release with a cardboard bi-fold CD jacket with the original cover additional pictures inside. (I own 3 copies of this one, one still sealed)I would recommend seeking out this version.

Thank you for making this album but PLEASE John Fogerty do another like this real soon. It should be easier this time.

5 out of 5 stars Great music from the past.......2006-11-10

I'm a die hard Fogerty fan, and many albums shunned by many are some of my favorites. This album is all songs from my childhood, folk songs that bring back memories.

Hooray! 11 years, and we get an album that by most artists' standards would've been fairly enjoyable...John Fogerty is a rocker, as evidenced by the new live DVD; you wouldn't know it from listening to "Blue Moon Swamp." I'm going back to listen to "Eye of the Zombie."

5 out of 5 stars Fogerty's best solo album.......2006-07-14

John Fogerty comes out hiding every couple of years and releases a new album. The Grammy winning "Blue Moon Swamp" is a delightful album full of great songs touching on blues, country, rock and gospel over the course of its 14 songs. 14 songs you ask?Yep. The album has been reissued with two solid tracks recorded during the original sessions. "Endless Sleep" and "Just Pickin'" aren't as essential as the other tracks on the album but they are a nice bonus for fans that may not have purchsed the album before or are replacing it.

The two bonus tracks clock in at less than 5 minutes. As I said if you have the previous edition they aren't essential. With the switch of Fogerty's solo stuff (all except his Fantasy releases)to Geffen Records the label thought it would be wise to reissue this album with bonus tracks to entice buyers again. The same original master created by Bob Ludwig is used so it doesn't really sound different.

Since it shares its title with John Fogerty's 2005 career-spanning hits collection, this double-disc concert album (and associated DVD, available separately) is unsurprisingly heavy on the Creedence chestnuts that dominate the guitarist/songwriter's history. In fact, only seven of these 26 tunes are drawn from Fogerty's post-CCR years. The Long Road Home in Concert is a spirited yet surprise-free 90-minute set that plays to Fogerty's blue-collar base with near note-perfect renditions of all the songs any fan would want to hear. His voice is in fine form, the five-piece band duplicates the Creedence parts to perfection, and the crowd responds accordingly. But despite everyone's best intentions and the snappy live sound, it's hard to say that these versions are better than the originals, and, as with a severely truncated "Keep on Chooglin'," they fail to duplicate the musty swamp feel so integral to Fogerty's finest work. Unlike the best live recordings that bring unique interpretations to well-known songs, The Long Road Home in Concert simply rehashes them without much, if any, sense of experimentation. It's as if Fogerty is afraid to offend anyone by not adhering to the established script. The result is a listenable and generally enjoyable artifact that plays to his strengths. But it also can be considered a missed opportunity to bring fresh perspective to Fogerty's revered catalog of American classics. --Hal Horowitz

as usual, all Fogerty stuff is top notch to me. I've been a fan since I first heard Proud Mary back in '69 I think it was, and I still can't get enough of him. Hope he tours New Zealand again soon. There wouldn't be anything of his I haven't got. Cheers, Phil, New Zealand

5 out of 5 stars my son said the best.......2007-01-15

My son loves John Fogerty, and CCRR, and he had almost all of his/their CD's, I bought this one for him for an xmas gift, in case he didn't have it. He didn't, and he said it was one of the best, he loved it.

So, I rate it 5 stars, from his point of view.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine disc from a fine concert .......2007-01-12

A fine disc from a very good concert. very good songs are in this compilation.
Every John Fogerty Fan should have this disc.

3 out of 5 stars A workmanlike live CD.......2006-11-22

Looking at the songlist for this double CD one is struck by how many outstanding songs John Fogerty has authored over the years. Fogerty is one of a small number of artists whose songs are likely to live on.

Having said that, one can't help but be disappointed by this CD. The musicianship is uniformly excellent, but there is no performance that clearly surpasses the studio versions of the songs contained here. Further, there are no long jams (the longest song clocks in at 4:33), suprising given Fogerty's mastery of the long rock song.

The CD is pleasant enough, and if you like Fogerty you will likely like this CD. However, there are several of studio his CDs as a solo artist or with CCR that I far prefer to this effort.

Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars Zanz Still Can't Dance.......2006-11-25

Everyone's missed the point: John is mining the various genres of songcraft. Deja Vu is exactly what it is intended to be: It's yet another song about another war...ho hum. There's always another war. The bass lines are too close to Who Will Stop the Rain for pure happenstance. Fogerty knows what he is creating. Check the cover photo. Now...Sugar Sugar, the number two song, just happens to be the title of the song that kept his greatest song, Green River, from the number one spot. That's why it is number two on this album. John never forgets! And Zantz still can't dance! There is a punk rock song, She's Got Baggage. This isn't by chance. John's too smart for that. Listen to the disco strings of Radar. Nobody's Here Anymore is Dire Staits because it's supposed to be Dire Straits. It's all part of the concept, just like Down on the Corner was part of Willy and the Poorboys concept. Rhubarb Pie is as pessimistic as anything John has ever written. Wicked Old Witch is Creedence for those who need more of that stuff. In the Garden is Jimi! It's also a commentary on all that 60's euphoria. In the garden, indeed! Fogerty has given us a concept album that summarizes the last 30 years. Take it or leave it. He has been doing this all along. God bless him.

3 out of 5 stars Where is that John Fogerty Sound?.......2006-09-30

John Fogerty trys to sound like everybody else on this album with mixed results. Only when he falls back upon the sound we love for then does he shine.

Here is a breakdown of my thoughts on the songs:

1) Deja Vu - a courageous & brilliant song about the war in Iraq. he took a lot of flack for writing this, but when John speaks out that is when he shines. I love this song.

2) Sugar Sugar - this is a wonderful, catchy tune and much better than Joy of My Life.

3) She's Got Baggage - never liked this song. It is not John. He is trying to sound like the Ramones and the result is one the worst songs he has done.

4) Radar - this is a better song. I give though only 7/10. A decent rocker, but he can do much better.

5) Honey Do - an offbeat song about marriage. It again copies another style. This time Carl Perkins. It is ok, but not great either.

6) Nobody's Here Anymore - Fogerty trys to do Dire Straits here. It is a pretty good song, but the lyrics are weak. Since when is talking on a cell phone or listening to headphones going to another dimension. Fogerty is reaching here to make a social commentary song, but just comes off sounding old.

7) I Will Walk With You - a nice song for his daughter, but too country for me.

8) Rhubard Pie - this bluesy song grows on you. I like it.

9) Wicked Old Witch - this is like an old CCR tune. One of the best songs on the cd, but too short, less than 3 minutes.

10) In the Garden - Don't like this. It sounds so dated. Fogerty is doing a cross between Cream & Hendrix. Also the drumming is way too loud.

John Fogerty took 2 and half years to write this and to me it seems like a concept album where he is going back and doing some CCR, but mostly other artists sound. I never play this album anymore. I listened to it many times, hoping it would grow on me, but it didn't.

It has its moments, but it not a good album. I also got the bootleg of Hoodoo at the same time and found that album, despite its poor sound, a much better album and that was scraped.

John needs to do what he does best - swamp rock. I hope next time he does that again.

4 out of 5 stars Other stuff to check out.......2006-06-21

I am a huge fan of John Fogerty's solo music and his music with CCR. If you enjoy his roots-rock style then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
1) 24 Hours A Day by The Bottle Rockets
2) Chooglin': A Tribute To The Songs Of John Fogerty
3) Banjos and Sunshine by Sixty Acres
4) Trace by Son Volt

5 out of 5 stars Should be 6 stars..........2006-05-13

This is a great album from beginning to end. I love all kinds of music, from Hard Death Metal to Classical. This album is just happy, you cant help but sing along and smile! Songs like Sugar Sugar and Rhubarb Pie inject themselves into your soul with delight! He even rocks out with She Got Baggage, what a catchy, modern tune! Buy this CD, and let your lips rise in a juicy smile.

P.S. His previous album, Blue Moon Swamp might even be better!

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2006-12-01

I think something bad must have happened in his life before he made this album. Very depressing.

1 out of 5 stars Yep, It Sucks.......2006-09-19

Only the most extremely deluded devotees can argue that this is a great release. Songs are overlong and awash in (now) dated production. John didn't need to experiment. His early stuff with Creedence is timeless, and to this day, remains his best work. Eye of the Zombie is an abomination. For an example of how miscalculated and boring this album is, check out "Soda Pop." This makes "Centerfield," (a rather derivative and self-imitating effort) seem like the work of a genius. Stick with the first six Creedence albums.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated And Powerful In It's Angry Intensity!.......2006-09-14

I think it is kind of sad when an artist releases a new album and people condemn it for not sounding like their previous CD's. We expect Evolution in everything but our songwriters it seems. It kind of reminds me of ageing accountant and lawyers who pretend they are "hippies' again after they smoke some "Whacky Terbaccy".Mr. Fogerty had the guts to produce this very good album with synthesisers on it and not everybody could accept that he wanted to try something new and perhaps take his music to the next level. Such is the ficklessness of the General Music Buying Public at large. There is some great hard rocking guitar work on this album and I am happy to say that Mr. Fogerty has lost none of his very accurate Sociological Powers of Observation which can be heard in the track "Headlines" which is about the Power of the Media and asking just when does it reach "Saturation Point"? This track alone makes this album worth buying.

1 out of 5 stars John Fogerty meets Miami Vice.......2006-08-15

No amount of historical perspective and contextualization can convince me that this does not suck. Yes, synthesizers and electronic drums were enjoying undue popularity but the thing that makes John Fogerty John Fogerty is his lack of interest in the fashionable, hence his surrender to those trappings results in the most un-John Fogerty like CD he's ever put out.

Now I'm not the kind of jerk that won't allow someone to try something new, but "new" doesn't automatically mean "good"

So does anyone else aside from me knows this sucks? Yes, John Fogerty himself does as he almost never, ever plays any songs from this wretched CD.

4 out of 5 stars A nice cross section of Fogerty's work, big gaps though.......2007-05-09

Sure, this is another greatest hits collection spun out by sony in an attempt to milk the consumer of a few more dollars, but I must say, it is a decent collection covering creedence through premonition live. It is missing some of his best solo work from the Centerfield works, none of his blue ridge rangers or self titled, nor eye of the zombie works, but for the low price, nice to have if you want to grab and go on a short road trip.

4 out of 5 stars For Fogerty and Creedence Fans Alike.......2007-06-18

As Creedence was pretty much the John Fogerty Show, it is nice to see and hear him on a concert tour. It seems that he has retained the same upbeat spirit that has endeared Creedence fans everywhere. After all, there are many 60's retreads out there, like Eric Clapton amd Paul McCartney still going strong, so why not John Fogerty?

Fogerty expertly recreates and reprises many Creedence hits such as the hypnotic Born on the Bayou, the easy Proud Mary, his stirring covers of I Put a Spell On You, and Susie Q,, and simple but energetic rockers like Travelin' Band and Fortunate Son. Singing and guitar playing are in top form here, and the backup band is every bit as compliant as the old Creedence, albeit less thin-sounding. New songs like Centerfield and Swamp River Days get an extra shot of adrenalin. And then there is one hearfelt ballad, Joy of My Life, with a fine slide guitar accompaniment.

If there is anything for me to be less than ecstatic about, it's that Fogerty really hasn't shown much growth or progress in his musical career. Not to worry. The album is still worth getting if you really like him and crave Creedence.

5 out of 5 stars Fogerty.......2007-06-10

Great value. If you remember the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

2 out of 5 stars John at his less than best.......2007-03-13

Fogerty goes through the motions with his CCR tunes and his own solo works, producing little more than a live version that could have been made in a studio with a canned crowd track. Banter in between songs is rehearsed sounding, and there's no good jams a la early Creedence Clearwater here.

Worse yet I forgot this CD and bought it again months later, being so excited to get a chance for a Fogerty album of any kind!

5 out of 5 stars John Fogerty- Loud, Live And Rocking All Over The World!.......2007-03-04

I have always felt that the true measure of an artist lies in the quality of his live peformances where he cannot depend on the technical wizardry to be found in a recording studio. Mr. Fogerty delivers the goods in this excellent live CD. He sums up the American fascination with baseball in the song "Centrefield" and I was delighted to hear him perform his relatively unknown song "Almost Saturday Night" . His distinctive guitar work is a joy to listen to and he also entertains his fans with stories between songs aout the love of his life Julie and how he has been using the same amplificaion rig since Woodstock. Naturally 5 stars for this CD.

Cajun music might not need a tribute--after all, it has held its own and remained popular for a very long time now--but the music on this disc is glittering enough to shine in any company. Ann Savoy (the grande dame of Cajun music who assembled this project) and Linda Ronstadt pair up to gorgeous effect on two songs, Richard Thompson offers his own particular edgy style to "Les Flammes d'Enfer," Nick Lowe sounds convincingly Arcadian on "Arrette Pas la Musique," and Maria McKee brings a transparent soulfulness to her contributions. Surprisingly, however, no one tackles the Cajun anthem, "Jolie Blonde." There are plenty of other big names in the collection, with former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty standing out on the classic "Diggy Diggy Lo"--but then his former band always featured the bayou influence. Ironically, however, it's the two instrumental cuts by the anonymous band of Cajun all-star musicians that come across best, showing that even when the stars come out to play, there's never a complete substitute for authenticity. These American roots are strong indeed. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars Coonass to the bone! .......2007-01-10

If you are not familiar with Cajun music, this is a great way to start. Some very good artists play some classic cajun tunes. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Back Home On Saturday Night.......2005-07-15

This album is so much like being back on the bayou once again on a Saturday night, dancing on old wooden floors, having a cold drink and playing pool. The songs transform a car or living room into a long lost world of childhood nights when people had not much money, but something to laugh about, and took time to make the most of what they did have. I am definately buying my memories today.

1 out of 5 stars Bland Lame Mockery.......2005-06-29

What should have been done with this project - Ann Savoy where is your common sense(?) - was to have incorporated TRUE Cajun artists' 'tributes' alongside mainstream artists' watered down lame interpretations just, if only, to add a bit of spice, zest and life to these horrendous "filler" tracks. Some of these artists have jumped on the wagon for a last gasp of possible exposure to their sagging careers. I'm very disappointed in Linda Ronstadt - seems all her projects from the past decade beyond her "Feels Like Home" album are mere warmups for indistinct singing which plainly implies she'd be much better off singing somewhere in a choir in anonymous obscurity. Somebody needs to grab Linda and shake her back to her own musical realities - what a shameful waste of her vocal abilities. [Ronstadt is leaving her "tierra" of Tuscon, Arizona in 2005 for a move back to San Francisco after a decade in commercial career doldrums - an obviously planned prestaging for a future "comeback" to her rightful throne as the Queen Of Pop.] If Ann Savoy envisioned massive universal exposure and commercial success for Cajun Music by influencing these 'blasts from their own pasts' to perform this genre of music, she was way off the mark and this entire project misfires. The artists on this tribute may indeed love Cajun, but, their musical visions fall flatly off base too fast. Sure, all music is out there and can be 'covered' by whoever wishes to do so, but, at least create an impressive contribution for the sake of keeping it vibrantly alive. We in Texas recognize and applaud the true Cajun artists[both famous and obscure]who come across the TX-LA border to perform at local & statewide celebrations only to leave audiences mesmerized and blown away long after they've packed up and gone back home to perform elsewhere. If you must have Cajun music in your collection out of a sincere love and appreciation for it, PLEASE look up the genre's rightfully endowed artists and obtain their Cd albums instead - at least give them their due.[You can also listen to Cajun Music saturday mornings for a few hours on Houston's own KPFT 90.1 FM on the internet at www.kpft.org - nothing but the real stuff is played there!]

5 out of 5 stars Slight disagreement...........2004-12-02

I disagree with the previous review on a few things. First of all, CCR WAS influenced by Swamp Pop, but Swamp Pop is HEAVILY influenced by Cajun music; for those who don't know, it's essentially the music that came out when young Cajuns decided to play rock and roll instead of their own music, and they added Cajun instruments, rhythms and French lyrics to rock and roll, forming a "new" (but actually evolved) style of music. But that's just a technicality.

To make a forced distinction of Ann Savoy as an "adopted Cajun", while true, doesn't invalidate her knowledge of Cajun music and the lifestyle. She's been living in Eunice, LA for decades with her husband, Marc Savoy, the famous accordion builder and musician who played with such seminal musicians as Nathan Abshire and the Balfa Brothers. Ann became famous long ago for publishing "Cajun Music Vol. 1", which has become essentially a bible for Cajun musicians and fans of the music. Plus, don't forget the Cajun saying that there are three ways one can become a Cajun; you can be born Cajun, marry a Cajun, or come through "la porte d'en arriere" (the back door).

Lastly, to recommend Zachary Richard to someone who knows nothing about Cajun music is absurd. Richard is a singer-songwriter who plays primarily guitar (he's a relatively poor accordion player... his real strength is in his songwriting and stellar vocal skills). His music is, while phenomenal, a WORSE reflection of the true Cajun music sound than this record. For someone who really wants to get introduced to Cajun music, try an album by The Balfa Brothers, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Balfa Toujours, or, to stay in the Savoy vein of things, the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band or, best of all, the Savoy Family Band.

By the way, the name can be and is spelled both "Savoy" and "Savoie". Ann and her husband Marc spell it "Savoy". The area of Eunice where they live is also called "Savoy", after Marc's family, and driving up the highway, you see a sign that says so.

4 out of 5 stars Correction regarding "Jolie Blonde".......2004-10-14

I thought this album was lovely with haunting songs, especially Patty Griffin's "Pa Janvier, Laisse Moi M'en Aller," and Anne Savoy & Linda Ronstadt's "La Chanson d'une Fille de Quinze Ans." A correction of an earlier review by someone else: Jolie Blonde" does indeed make its appearance on this album, under the title of "Ma Blonde Est Partie." Different title, same melody!
