5 out of 5 stars Casual listener sits up and takes notice.......2006-02-17

Recently (Jan'06), I went to see a favorite band ("Lunasa") and was irked to have to wait through a warm-up act--it was two people I'd never heard of: Liz Carroll and John Doyle. By the second number, I was ashamed of myself. Doyle flashed incredibly proficient, high-energy guitar work, and connected well with his audience. After the show, I bought his CD.

In the studio, his guitar work recedes (comparatively), and its the singing that moves to the fore. His voice offers a warm, gentle baritone that carefully articulates the lyrics of some gruesome ballads. (This is a whole album of wayward sons!) The net effect is an album that's ends up being all about nuance and wry humor--it wears very well.

5 out of 5 stars Best trad album of the year!.......2006-02-09

....and of 2006 I have no doubt, too. John Doyle has long been known as a phenomenal guitar player, probably the best since Nic Jones, but his musicality-- singing, expressiveness, songwriting-- has been underrated. His first album "Evening Comes Early" is a gem, and a hard act to follow, but "Wayward Son" tops even that.

Great as he is as a guitar-player-- a guitar-player's guitar-player-- I adore the singing. On "Bitter the Parting" he is accompanied by the incomparable Kate Rusby... but my favorite is the sad night-visiting song "The C**ks are Crowing" (OK, it's roosters, but the word raises flags, so...)... he plays it straight, just him and the guitar, just him and his voice, and it absolutely breaks your heart.

"Little Sadie," the American song in which the singer kills pretty Sadie and takes a nap, has a bluesy, almost jazzy groove. Well, Mick Moloney calls John "the groovemeister"-- and you can see why.

This album is utterly irresistible, and never leaving my ipod!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2005-12-09

There are 12 tracks and 4 are instrumental tune sets. 3 of the four feature Doyle flatpicking the tunes. He is the best I've ever heard and hearing him pick is worth the price of the album alone. The 4th tune set has John Williams on concertina and Seamus Egan on the low Eflat whistle. Another great track!

The songs are all trad folk songs played to John's unique style. He singing is much more confident than on his previous recordings and the arrangements could not be better. He has various guest on the album and they are all placed brilliantly in the mix.

This album is a keeper!

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating album by a unique talent.......2005-09-16

As best as I can figure, John Doyle is the greatest Irish rhythm guitar player ever. Check out his instructional video from Homespun, or any of his early albums with Solas --- he provides a bass line, chordal accompaniment, countermelodies, and percussion, all at once. Outstanding stuff --- and it really makes Irish music more accessable for modern listeners.

But in his two solo albums, you get a broader view of the man's talents. He is a fine singer, particularly on the old ballads, a great fingerstyle player, and flatpicks some excellent tunes on guitar and bouzouki. And he has some mighty talented friends pitching in here. "Wayward Son" is Irish music at heart, but you can also hear other Celtic and Appalachian roots music in here, and John's ear for rhythm gives some of his songs a Middle Eastern or jazz feel.

5 out of 5 stars THE MUSICIAN'S MUSICIAN.......2005-09-07

John is the best,a mega-talented guitarist.A treat to see live, especialy with Liz Carole.Buy his cd's, you won't be sorry.

To judge by the impassioned responses to her debut album Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church has already set extraordinary expectations for any follow-up. After all, the vocal phenomenon from Cardiff, Wales, took up a place in The Guinness Book of Records as the youngest artist ever--at the tender age of 12--to have an album attaining No. 1 status on the classical charts. This self-titled second release will continue to delight the highly gifted singer's legions of fans, and also contains some surprises for them. Church here tries out classical repertory with Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" and the "Jewel Song"--her pure and high-flying voice showing an amazing agility. There is great warmth in a couple of sacred songs, as well as the traditional Irish "She Moved Through the Fair." Church's vocal color--almost like a boy soprano at times--brings something unique to Gershwin's "Summertime," while the first track--Danny Beckerman's Hallmark-ish "Just Wave Hello"--seems destined to become part of the music you can't avoid associating with the turn of the millennium. --Sarah Chin

Charlotte church is truely a remarkable success in the press, for her wonderful voice as a child of 12-14 years old, I give her credit and i would love to meet this girl one day, i think the world of her, it would be wonderful if she could sing those songs when she was a child, because she has got such a beautiful voice, which I think is just amazing,i think the reason why she doesnt like this new pope is becayse she had religion shoved down her throat and she prberly had a gutful of religion, but she still sys that she is quite religious,if she deicdes to go back and doing opera that would be really wonderful because people would rcongise her once again, I wish the press would back off and stop all this harsh critism because when you come to think of it she is a true star in the making, and nobody should she make you feel that you should shun her music, good luck Charlotte my true friend and long time lost romeo

I had heard that Charlotte church might consider to go back to her classical roots, but give her time, I mean I dont like it when the press say you must do this and that, the poor girl has been through alot, I will give her 100% in all that she does, she is an inspiration to me, and she had a voice that had potential and was very beautiful,it she does decide to go back to doing opera, it would be good to hear hard rock music in the background while she sings sweetly, and always it would be wonderful if she could do something a bit unusual, for example with the song that she sang at 13 which is "Just wave hello, and if she sings it now with an opera voice it would be wonderful, while rock music is in the song, but it would be good if the msic of the song could be reversed, i mean to have rock in the beining and then opera at the end, its just my suggestion, I wish her all the best in the future, and she tells me that she wants to be a opera singer in the near future which is a long long way away, good luck my dear, your no top 1 fan Jamie Cox

(I wish the press would back off)but i still remember a little welsh girl of 13 who sang sweetly and had showed respect to God, I am a catholic, it would be wonderful to meet you one day Charlotte, my best friend, if you are reading this,my dear, good luck to you.

5 out of 5 stars I am A catholic, I was a huge charlotte church fan, but since her recent disrepect for the church,is it best to boycott!!!.......2007-02-04

Where, has charlotte church gone, very downhill i would imagine, I was a huge charlotte church fan, i always thought the world of her, her voice was so sweet, full and bright, and the image that she represented was about a young lady in a cathedral who loved her God and never questioned anyone even the Priests, she has gone down the river of no return, for someone who had such wonderful talent, when you come to think of it, what a waste she recorded it on junk, and I hope she will make peace with pope bendict because I think he is just wonderful, there be must be something to clear up her name,I used to love her, but after reading one revierwer which said to boycott her music, i was very shoscked, because i always thought she was brought up properly, anyway I feel to boycott and let prayer back into my life for the comming years ahead.

    4 out of 5 stars Good,Very good,But Not Great.......2006-05-02

Brian McFadden was a key member of the Irish boyband Westlife and in his songs in this, his first album as a solo artist,we catch glimpses of the influence and style of the hugely sucessful group. Brian,as you may recall, actually broke away from the band to spend more time with his wife but within two months of his departure from Westlife, Brian McFadden released his first solo single "Real to Me", one of the few genuinely great songs in this CD.

"Real to Me" is a fantastic single with a melodious music complementing the powerful lyrics. Another track that exhibits the array of talent of this Irishman is "Irish Son"---composed on a patriotic theme that fires up the sense of nationalism, this title-track is a great way to start the CD. "He's No Hero" and " Sorry Love Daddy" invoke a softer kind of music with an air of melancholy about them. Actually I feel that Brian McFadden's voice is suited to such types of songs and not to fast and loud music as in " Lose Lose Situation" and "Pull Myself Away", which in my opinion, sound wan and emotionless. "Demons", "Be True To Your Woman", "Walking Disaster" and " Walking Into Walls" are good songs but somehow fail to capture our heart and eventually passed by leaving an expression of a mere shallow depth of enjoyment. The best song in "Irish Son" in my judgement is "Almost Here", a great duet by two amazing vocalists. Delta Gudrem and Brian McFadden compilment each other exquisitely in this track and as the music moves from a soft to a mid-tempo rhythm and the lyrics become more and more touching, you are invariably led to accept and imbibe the profound emotion and sentimentality of this song.

Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating and Justin Timberlake all broke away from their respective groups and launched massively successful solo careers. Brian McFadden too has endeavoured to acomplish just that and has produced a mixed bag in his maiden album "Irish Son". But he has got more to do if he wants to be a real heavyweight in the arena of Pop solo artist since as more time elapses, people will tend to associate him less and less with Westlife and then Brian has to create and sustain and individual identity bereft of past glories. Brian McFadden has the talent, the voice and the intensity to establish himself as a great male solo vocalist but for that he would've to pay attentiion to what types of music he creates and the sensibitity of his songs. I feel that his voice doesn't allow him to make all and any kinda of music and the Irishman must stick to this limitation and not try something that goes beyond, not atleast in the next two CDs.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this Disk.......2006-03-07

It has been a long time since I have heard a CD of substance. There are so many artists out there today who only sing the praises of using and demeaning woman, and this is not one of them. This is a CD that tells how life really is, and it is down to earth, and just plain good. One of the best cd's I have heard in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars The first CD I have loved in Y ears.......2006-03-03

I was living in the UK when the album was released, a year ago. I Loved the couple of songs I had heard on the radio, and when I moved back to the states, I found myself longing to hear them again. I purchased the CD, and to my surprise, I liked every song on it. I have owned this CD for 7-8 months now, and can honestly say that not a day goes by that I don't listen to it.

I found this CD to be refreshing. It is much better than most of the music released these days, and much better than what is being released in the UK. If you want to hear nothing but remakes the UK is the place to go.

5 out of 5 stars Proves he doesn't need Westlife.......2006-02-08

At first, I'll admit, I was really upset when Brian McFadden decided to leave the band (for more than the reason he had given in the press release). However, I had always anticipated his CD, and when it did come out, I rushed to get it. It was simply amazing.

The straight-forward lyrics and honesty sound so natural when put into those fabulous tunes. He really does have a knack for songwriting, already proven in a few Westlife tracks beforehand.

"Sorry Love Daddy" reduced me to tears when I first heard it without knowing the context. It is plain, honest, filled with guilt for what he had done and leaving his two daughters like he did. "Be True to Your Woman" is an apology in disguise, written to his ex-wife Kerry Kantona. Again, touching, with thoughtful lyrics.

The duet with Delta Goodrem ("Almost Here") is one of the very best duets ever sung in recent music history. It's not fancy, it's not complicated, it's not filled with amazing chords and high notes. It's the opposite: It's simple, sophisticated, and most importantly, so easy to listen to. It's so soothing just to hear their voices. Brian and the producers are extra thoughtful to lower the background music when it's Delta's turn to sing, knowing that her voice is much softer than Brian's. This creates a dramatic contrast between them, suiting how the song develops.

All other songs are very soothing and pleasing, but nothing too special to mention. But I'm sure, if you liked Brian McFadden as a person, as a member of Westlife or his voice, then you won't be disappointed by this.

1 out of 5 stars Just total terrible this CD, disgusted beyond words!.......2005-12-03

I can't get what peeps find so good with this so terrible CD of the Ex Westlifer Brian McFadden. It may appear many lack the musical/emotional sensitivity nowdays, thinking everything is great, how sad. After somebody gave it to me, and one so unbearable listen, I just threw it away, found Brians voice, lyrics, music and all some of the worst heard to date, and to top it off the horrid Duett with Delta Goodrem whom I'm fan of, just total disgusted and saddened me beyond words - This is typical Brian as he did to the poor Atomic Kitten member, not too long ago. All the Rumours regarding Delta & Brian should be treated as empty air, as how insensitive the media is nowdays - No match in Heaven!. And hope that this so totally untalented Ex Westlifer will never put out another Album again, and never sing with the OZ Sweetheart ever again,as she doesnt deserve to be made so dirty by this horrible Brian McFadden with his so dark past, and this so bad CD also shows, noticing his poor songwriting on the sideline just too clearly. A very bad CD of a very bad singer, that should not have been...Very sad!

Frank Patterson is an Irish tenor in the grand tradition of John McCormack and Josef Locke. God Bless America! is a live recording of a concert he performed in tribute to his adopted country. The songs range from traditional Irish tunes like "The Star of the County Down" and "The Spinning Wheel" to sentimental music-hall ballads like "Mother Machree" and "The Rose of Tralee." He also sings the inevitable "O Solo Mio" (is there a tenor born who can resist it?) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of the Night." Patterson is joined on a number of tunes by his wife, Eily O'Grady, and her Irish Harp Orchestra. Patterson is an unabashedly emotional singer who wrings the last teardrop out of chestnuts like "Danny Boy," but he does it in such a charming manner that his performances never descend into kitsch. --Michael Simmons

4 out of 5 stars Just Nice Music.......2007-05-13

Frank Patterson does his best singing when he simply sings the familiar songs with heartfelt passion. He does nothing fancy and ends up with a superior product. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars "Love and Happiness through the power of song".......2000-03-26

Irish tenor Frank Patterson was born and raised in Tipperary, performing at an early age with the Wren Boys. Patterson's early works were primarily classical, but with the increasingly popularity of celtic music, Frank turned his energies toward his homeland traditional folk ballads. PBS special "Ireland in Song" was a tremendous hit, giving him more exposure than ever to the world with his "God" given talent.

This album - "God Bless America - An Irish Salute", is one of the most touching compilations of music ever recorded. One of the highlights is his wife Eily O'Grady and her Irish Harp Orchestra, simply an emotional pair of people enjoying what they do best, spreading love and happiness through the power of song.

5 out of 5 stars Saw the PBS Special.......2000-03-22

I do not have the album but saw the PBS special last Saturday night and have been looking for the cd and will buy it. The song My Son is the most moving and beautiful I have ever heard. Having three sons, I felt it related to each of them and it can be for either mother or father. The rest of the songs were superb. Mr Patterson is a warm and wonderful human being and has a great voice. His son played the violin when he sang My Son, by the way. Also, his wife's group of harpists are wonderful. All in all, a great group of songs show and I am sure a great cd. I also want the tape when it is available.

    5 out of 5 stars Words.......2000-03-18

Sorry, I have not heard this album, but the song "MY SON" was suggested for a Mother/Son dance at his wedding. I would surely love to see the words first, before I purchase the album.. Thank you for any help you may have.

The performances are true to the origional composer's intent. It never sounds like the music is being distorted to fit on a harmonica. Rather, it sounds the as if the music were written for harmonica.

    Album Description

Four to the Bar's final recording, capturing one of New York's truly influential Irish bands at the height of its powers. Now five years after its original release, The Irish Side has reissued this classic album of masterfully crafted originals and tasteful covers.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Celtic and Accoustic Fans.......2003-03-19

A great album by a great band. I had the pleasure of hearing FTTB at Tommy Makem's in NYC in the early '90s and am glad the CD exists to testify to their strong instrumentals, songwriting, and singing. And their cover of "Catch the Wind" is great.

    5 out of 5 stars 4 to the Bar.......2002-12-01

This was perhaps one of the best Irish/Rock/Ballad bands of its time. Too bad the boys all broke up and went their seperate ways. I heard David is back in Ireland, while one of the boys is raising a family in Florida. They played many of the Bronx/Yonkers bars like Sam McGwire's, Rory's and the Landsdowne. Their other album is a live album record at Sam McGwire's and is worth a spot in any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Lucky For Me.......2002-01-30

I was so very lucky to have been able to have been at many of their concerts. It was the first time I saw people become so very Irish. I will never forget '95.My brother & I were changed by the experience. We with the band well.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-11-08

I accidentally saw Four to the Bar live in the Bronx apparently right before they stopped touring and performing together. I've had a copy of this CD since that night and it is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. The music runs the gamut from haunting ballads to songs that make you get up and dance.
