Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The most treasured recording I possess.......2006-12-21

Within hours of moving into my new home, I began to set up my stereo equipment. I had a hankerin' for some aural lunar travel that could only be quenched by Joe Meek's unbelievably unique and perfect recordings found on the "I Hear a New World" CD. I remember the first time I heard "Magnetic Fields". I was sitting up in bed with my headphones connected to my laptop. After about 18% download progress, I hit "Preview" to sample what was to come. All I could hear was odd noises, clicks, hisses and pops. "Could this be a corrupted mp3," I asked myself. I gave it a few more minutes as the hijacked wifi signal went from "Low" to "Very Low" strength. I was now at 35%. I gave it another "Preview". Then, about one minute into the cacophonic sci-fi journey, I arrived. But what is this sound? A keyboard - an organ - theremin? The driving drumbeat was so heavenly as it took me away from my physical surroundings. The I.V. in my arm seemed to disappear as did the stench of the fella in the next bed. I started to laugh outloud. Nothing was funny at all. I was just so happy. I had struck gold and kept digging. I continued downloading "Love Dance of the Saroos", "Dribcots Spaceboat", "Orbit Around the Moon" as I laughed with delight. Never before or since have I actually LAUGHED with sheer delight.
So, after I set up my stereo, I proceeded to dig through my CD box. "Pink and black," I murmured as I searched. "Looking for pink and black.....Joe Meek and the Bluemen...where are you, CD?" I kept digging for about 20 minutes. It was nowhere to be found. I searched in other boxes. In the DVD box, the Christmas decoration box, the GI Joe box, the Chia pet box...NOWHERE! That's when it dawned on me - "The moon box!" My most special box of all. Of course, there it was sitting right between the authentic moon cheese curd and my Area 51 medallion. I found it. In this album, I have found what I've searched for my whole life. Most importantly, with this music pouring through my head, I've found sanity.

An extraordinary sonic fantasy.......2006-03-15

An astonishing work, created in the late 50s and in STEREO
For all those who are interested in sound engineering and haven't discovered Joe Meek then this is a challenging introduction.
Basically it's a home studio recording of Mr Meek space fantasy CONCEPT album, him being famous of course for producing 'Telstar' by The Tornados a major hit in the early 60s.
The recording methods used broke all the rules and created a unique sonic lanscape that in the main still sounds fresh and exciting fifty years on. recommended

A Glistening Artifact Breathes Anew.......2005-08-29

Infamous British pop producer Joe Meek (of TELSTAR fame) attempted his audio manifesto in 1960, and the result was I HEAR A NEW WORLD, a collection of tracks which has finally seen the light of day. Any self-respecting 4-track-owning lover of sublime schlock must indulge. There are moments of rapture between the freshly digitized grooves. Predating Brian Wilson's SMILE by almost seven years, Meek (with a lot of uncredited help) fashioned a whole new acoustic landscape, begging to be traversed. A must!

Joe Meek is certainly an unique character. Obsessed with sci-fi and the paranormal, he aspired to greatness, but his genius wasn't known in his lifetime. Meek was an auteur and one of the most unique figures in popular music history. He should've been made a millionare by the Tornados' hit single "Telstar", but a resulting lawsuit kept that from happening. The best, most accesible introduction to Meek's work is definatly the "It's Hard to Beleive" compilation. If you considor yourself a Meek fan by that point, you may want to check out this unique and surrealistic album. It was possibly, as the other reviewer mention, rock's first concept album (pre-dating Zappa's "Freak Out"). All the songs deal with a journey to moon, and what life may be like on it. It is a bizarre vision to say the least, which includes sped-up voices of space creatures, armies of "Globbots", and plentiful sci-fi noises and sound effects. It is apparent that Meek had really lost his mind by than, which means if you're into outsider music and bizarre records, you'll love this. If you're expecting it to be full of "Telstar"-like rock 'n' roll, you'll be dissapointed. I enjoyed it, but it's certainly a required taste.

Hey kids-what was the FIRST rock concept album? was it The Wall? NA!!!! Tommy? NA!!!!!!! it was this album, released in 1960... Talk about space age:This album was released as a double EP back then to demonstrate the wonders of stereo in hi fi shops.Recored by the legendary producer Joe meek(of "Telsatr" fame),This album is his personal twisted visoin on moon people,space and all that mumbojumbospace crap.It has incrediably good sound for its times (lots of reverb,sound EFX),some good tunes(title track and the "hit" magnetic field),but the thing is very simple-only a limted edition of vinykl was produced back then....COLEECTIBLE! So now you can hear it agin(tough it was released in 91),but this time with an additional 35 min interview with meek(very noisey,but quiet interesting for ANYONE in the music biz),and a short movie of meek's work. This is a must for anyone who likes surf,psyc-rock and space.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Music of Burton Lane.......2006-02-18

This CD is a real delight as Michael Feinstein is one of my favorite performers. He does a great job with this music by Burton Lane. I have both Volumns of music by Burton Lane and I enjoy listenting to both of these CD's

Great CD!.......2000-11-26

It took awhile for me to enjoy the songs on this CD, but once I did, I couldn't stop listening. There are romantic songs, funny songs, powerful songs. A little something for everyone. If you don't enjoy it at the first listen - don't give up! This CD will definately grow on you!

Often crazy, but what a class.......1998-12-06

These CD's contain kown, very known (Canteloube, Bach transcriptions), and rarities. Its often delirious, and the orchestrations are rewritten (Dvorak nine, Tchaikowsky six). But Brahms five and Beethoven third are very serious and have good place in a plethoric discography. Mahlers second is a reference, and we have a grandios Wagner, with "just enough customization" The sound is remastered, good quality but a little sharp (Brahms-Shostakowitch). Anyway an essential contribution to the music by a great monster of the conducting. Stokowski: often imited, never matched. Indispensable !!
