4 out of 5 stars FOR ME, THIS ALBUM MAKES THE MOVIE.......2006-12-29

i saw THE MACK. i just ask too many questions when it comes to blaxploitation films. i do dig the soundtrack. the only thing is though is that it is a bit too mellow for me. i like them raw and rough. however, on a boring day, i can put this on and it can be my lemonade vibe. willie hutch's music has that effect on me. sunshine in the shade..............................................................

5 out of 5 stars More than your typical blaxploitation soundtrack.......2005-06-11

On THE MACK, the soundtrack to to the cult film starring Max Julien, Roger Mosley (pre- "Magnum P.I.") and Richard Pryor, 70s Motown artist Willie Hutch dazzles with his "Bobby Womack meets Bill Withers" vocals, earthy lyrics, southern soul-style guitar picking and excellent string and horn arrangements.

The two singles from this album ("Brother's Gonna Work It Out" and "Slick) became top 20 r&b hits, while the respectably sexy "I Choose You" was a popular black radio album cut. Other highlights from this set include the mournful "Mama's Song", the wistful "Now That It's All Over" and the pumpin' title track.

Like most blaxploitation soundtracks of the 70's, THE MACK features wah-wah guitars and sooperbaaad "chick" background singers. However, these cliches actually enhance these thought-provoking songs. Overall, THE MACK is like Curtis Mayfield's SUPERFLY. Both soundtracks have seven songs and two instrumentals as well as lyrics that act as a Greek chorus to warn the listeners about the dangers of street life.

5 out of 5 stars Choose this cd please.......2005-06-08

If you had the opportunity to see the movie the Mack, you know
how important the soundtrack is to the movie. Brothers gonna
work it out,Mama, Vampin' the songs go on and on! Without a
doubt my favorite is Now that it's all over. I tell you what
go and rent the movie and then I bet you will want the soundtrack. The music is performed well and the songs are well
written especially the love songs. Enjoy this one on me.

5 out of 5 stars Willie Hutch - The Original Mack.......2004-03-18

This is definitely an a cd to buy if you are from the old school like I am. This is a part of the "Blackploitation" films I grew up watching in the 1970's. The music is original and the movie even though outdated, fits into some of the lifestyles that people are trying to emulate today. There will never be another "GOLDIE" so get the movie as well. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Wille Hutch is the man!!!!!.......2003-10-22

This is a great ssoundtrack I wish that I could give this album more than 5 stars. This album gets 5 stars just for this bad song that is on here called "I choose you" this song is so bad that when I play this album I have to listen to I Choose you at least three times this is an incredible song also and there are also other good songs on here "Brother's Gonna Work It Out, Mack Man got to get over, slick, and more this is a great album if you like the movie the mack and the blaxploitation era then you will definitely like this album so therefore I would recommend anyone who likes the blaxploitation era and Willie Hutch to buy this album you will not go wrong!!!!!

Through the first half of the '70s, and intermittently thereafter, Willie Hutch was the closest thing the Motown stable had to a Curtis Mayfield, from his cool, guitar-and-percussion based soul numbers (and the strings that sweetened them) on down to his cap and shades. An ace songwriter who'd cowritten "I'll Be There" for the Jackson 5, he followed Mayfield's path into scoring movies--Foxy Brown and The Mack (for which he wrote the enduring "Brother's Gonna Work It Out")--but his voice was earthier, more in the Sam Cooke tradition, and his lyrics were more concerned with the redemptive power of love than with street terror. This smart career condensation also jumps forward for his '82 dance-floor semi-hit "In and Out." --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars A True Masterpiece.......2007-03-12

Now this is the cd that played in ALL basements throughout America! The red light bulb is in, while you are watching from the door, your momma and daddy, bumping Willie Hutch with all of their friends! This is a classic that you have to add to your collection! I am just waiting on the rest of Willie Hutch's music to get released on CD! Whoever reads this and has that connection? Lets make it happen! Rest in peace Willie!

5 out of 5 stars SLICK WILLIE !.......2006-07-18

"SLICK" will probably be one of his biggest songs, Willie Hutch will be most remembered for, along with "BROTHER'S GONNA WORK IT OUT", "IN & OUT", "LOVE POWER", and "PARTY DOWN". Let's not forget he wrote "I'LL BE THERE" for the Jackson 5. He will be sadly missed . I'm sure he's in Motown Heaven !!

5 out of 5 stars Yet another one missed on the radar !.......2006-05-25

Willie Hutch passed in 2005 - - a unique figure in soul music, because like Bunny Siegler, he wrote the songs people sang, could have been a hit maker himself, but spent most his time behind the scenes. Oddly, his strongest works in my mind were the stuff he did for soundtracks like THE MACK and FOXY BROWN - - albums who's soundtracks may not not be as famous as SHAFT and SUPERFLY but are pretty much as funky, bad*ass yet mellow and groovy as you get - - and strangely enough, track by track very hit oriented. (Songs, not just orchestrations!)

Sadly, Hutch never became the superstar he deserved (though its great to see him on some of those old Soul Train episodes floating around!) I think its really sad - - He reminds me a lot of yet another "in the shadows" soul singer: Leroy Hutson - - both had very strong songwriting and orchestrating skills, distinct *driving* styles, yet are not as well known as they should be. - - And if you're not sold on what I'm saying yet, hopefully this great compilation will serve as THE PROOF - - My strong advice however is to get MACK and FOXY instead... great albums listenable straight through!!!

1 out of 5 stars Does not 'got' the glow.......2005-08-02

How can you make a Willie Hutch's greatest hits cd and not include the song 'Glow' from the Last Dragon soundtrack? You just can't, and that is why this CD is complete garbage. 'Glow' is not only Willie Hutch's greatest hit, but perhaps the greatest hit of any artist ever. Willie Hutch knows that it "takes sacrifice, it takes hard work, it's a way of life" to create timeless classics like "Glow", and that is why he has "reached the upper level." Willie Hutch has got the glow, but this cd doesn't, and that is why it should be boycotted...if anyone is even purchasing this cd to begin with.

The accompanying film recreates the original vibe of the '70s television show so brilliantly it's no wonder the producers decided to stick with the real thing for the soundtrack to Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson's hilarious remake of Starsky & Hutch. So no embarrassing contributions from Sugar Ray or OutKast (Anyone remember the unfortunate "Land of a Million Drums" from the Scooby Doo movie?), but a great if slightly used roller-disco soundtrack courtesy of the Jackson Five ("Dancing Machine") and KC & The Sunshine Band ("That's The Way I Like It"), balanced out by some marshmallow pop like Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight" and earnest country rock by Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues") and Waylon Jennings ("I'm a Ramblin' Man"). This is what the radio used to sound like before the robots took over. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Where is Eric Clapton?.......2005-09-14

I think as a whole the soundtrack is good, but there are a
couple of songs that could have been left off. Dazz and Two Dragons come to mind. Don't Give Up On Us Baby? That one stunk when David Soul sang it!! Where are Bary Mantilow, Aerosmith and,
of course, Eric Clapton?

5 out of 5 stars Who Knew! (Owen Wilson could sing).......2005-01-07

"the album would have been better without the cover versions by Owen Wilson, Dan Finnerty, and Brigette Romanek. The originals are far superior."

I completely disagree ... regarding Owen's version of "Don't Give Up On Us Baby". I downloaded the original to listen to it again (it's been years) and I actually like Owen's rendition better! He really captured the simple beauty of the message .. perfectly. Hearing his voice on this album is a real delight. Don't get me wrong, I would give him a voice lesson or two if I knew him (I studied opera at U.T. and sing jazz) ... but overall, the feeling and message comes across beautifully and as usual I have become more smitten by his subtle and refreshing talent. I've even memorized a harmony part, so Owen, when you're ready, I'll be there! (with bells on my toes and everything) ;) The angel and the dreamer that sometimes plays a fool ... don't give up on us baby.

4 out of 5 stars Average soundtrack from a good movie.......2004-12-06

Just like the accompanying movie, the soundtrack to Starsky And Hutch is somewhat gentle fun without sticking in the memory too long. Things start off promising with Chicago's Old Days and Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. And Right Back Where We Started From is nice. The highlight is The Weight from EASY RIDER plus "Dancing Machine" and "That's The Way I Like It" bring back memories. However the inclusion of "I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You" is somewhat questionable. "I'm A Ramblin' Man" is sold, but Owen Wilson warbling "Don't Give Up On Us" irks. Regardless, a good soundtrack that fans of the film will enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Where's BM, Aerosmith?.......2004-08-27

I can't believe Barry Manilow and Aerosmith were left out. Looking at the quality of some of the other songs on the soundtrack, maybe it is better for them not to be associated with it. It is bad enough that the Carpenters tune is missing but "Can't smile without you" opens the movie and "Sweet emotion" ends it. The soundtrack should have followed that formula.

5 out of 5 stars MAXINE NIGHTINGALE's " RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM" .......2004-07-24

This is a great soundtrack!!
I love Maxine Nightingale's ... Right Back Where We Started from!..

5 out of 5 stars The 187-Master on a solo!.......2005-12-30

Big Hutch aka Cold 187um who's the front man of Above the Law, Cold 187um goes under his alias, Big Hutch to bring a solid solo joint to your ears. The better known man from Above the Law brings his distinct voice and style over some more G-Funk beats that Above the Law has always brung. Production is good and just what you'd expect from something Above the Law is on, nice, smooth G-Funk beats, Big Mil does 6 of the 15, Big Hutch does 4, DJ Silk does 2, SOC, Aaron, Tha Chill all do 1. Guests are on half of the songs, and KMG of Above the Law gets in on 3. It has 2 songs I skip, 4 are ok, and the other 10 are good, with one being a great song. A good album to have for fans of G-Funk or Above the Law. Big Hutch has a pretty tight album, I've seen the music video to the song Bubonic Plague if anyone is interested!

The 187-Master's best are 2, 3, *4(featuring Ha Ha Loc & Bam), 5(featuring KMG & Tha Chill), *6(featuring Xzibit & KMG), 8(featuring Safecracka), 9, *10(featuring Young Ten & Bam), 12(featuring Saafir), 13 & 15(featuring KMG & Bam).

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!.......2005-09-23

I made a blood oath years ago to buy anything that Cold 187em (now Big Hutch) and ATL put out. For the longest time after the bomb (and I mean that in a bad way) of an album "Forever Rich Thugs", I haden't heard from this group. In perusing Amazon, I found that Big Hutch had two albums out I had not had (Executive Decisions and Live from the Ghetto) and I knew I had to get them, no matter the cost.

In terms of Executive Decisions, I had hoped that this album wasn't as bad as Forver Rich Thugs; thankfully it was not. In fact, it was very good. I would be lying if I thought the rap in and of itself wasn't growing old - it is. But I am some 15 years older now and probably have had my fill of pimping, hustling, and balling. The refreshing part of this album is that almost all of the tracks have some freshness in the music: "Do You Know" is as good as it gets from any ATL album. Its probably easier for me to list the tracks that miss: 2 Killas, Playa Hater (although its kind of funny) and the "Bonus Track".

Buy this album if your an ATL fan and you can get it for under 20 bucks; you'll be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Big Hutch: the artist.......2001-11-24

The godfather Big Hutch is really far away from many other groups who know success in HipHop's world. His sounds and beats are uncomparable. That single style puts Hutch above the Hip Hop. More than a musician, Hutch is a real talented artist. If you're a true fan of Above the Law, EXECUTIVE DECISIONS will become a masterpiece in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Real playas innovate.......2000-08-16

I've had this album for six months now and it's still growing on me like bacteria. The beats are really something mad fresh - reverse tape loops, little twittering synth sounds, sweeping string chords - there's no end to the invention Hutch brings to this crisp biccie: and all underpinned by that PHAT bass you expect from a west coast artist. Many of the flourishes are so subtle you don't notice them at first listening. Complementing the understated beats is Hutch's smooth, almost whispered at times, delivery on the mic. Yes, my friends this album is the dog's proverbials. Not instant gratification but an album of hidden treasures that'll keep you craving for a LONG time. Ease into it.

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't Feeling It........2005-09-24

Its safe to say that you're an ATL fan if you bought this album. And if you're an ATL fan, then you're probably going to be a little dissapointed by this release. I would say this album is more like 2 and a half stars as opposed to three, and it doesn't really come close to the level of "Executive Decisions" solo album release prior to "Live from the Ghetto." This album feels like "Forver Rich Thugs"; I wasn't feeling that album either.

2 out of 5 stars "Live From The Ghetto" Review.......2004-12-14

Whether he's "Cold 187" or "Big Hutch", Gregory Hutchinson has been regarded by many as one of the most underrated producers on the West Coast rap scene. The producer and frontman for Above The Law has dropped classic gems like "Livin' Like Hustlers" and "Uncle Sam's Curse" with his group but they have never been able to mantain a following. Big Hutch's second solo, "Live From The Ghetto" doesn't really do the veteran producer much justice. The very same guy who blessed us with the amazing "Black Superman" in 1994 seems a little uninspired on the production tip these days. Aside from the laid-back "I Used To Respect You", this album doesn't do much for me. Maybe I was expecting more here but I can't help but feel unimpressed by "Live From The Ghetto".

4 out of 5 stars Return of the Real .......2004-08-19

Finally, a new release from the camp of legendary west coast rappers Above The Law. This album refreshes the scene with the same hard, g-funk sound that Hutch and ATL originated. Hutch is top notch when it comes to producing, so you can expect a quality effort when he has his hand in it. This album is no different. Solid solo follow up album to Executive Decisions. There are a couple tracks that he tried something innovative, with different results. All said and done, the album is still bumpin'. "Gutta" is classic. This is how the REAL west coast puts it down. Check out this album.

4 out of 5 stars STILL THAT NIGGA.......2004-07-31

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUM OUT IN THE STREET . IF WE SUPPORT ARE PEEPS WEST COAST RAPPER HE WOULD BE UP THERE WITH SNOOP DOG !! HIS FLOW IS OUT OF THIS WORLD HE KEEP YOU GROOVING LIKE KNOW OTHER! HOT ALBUM!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good album, not as good as his group work with above the law.......2004-06-29

This is a tight ass album. Get it now, you wont be dissapointed. 187 is still very consistent on putting out good solo albums but its not quite as hype as the Above the law albums they've put out. Almost every song on this album is worth bumpin. I like that he had KMG and K-OSS on a few tracks and that shows that there will most likely be another Above the Law release in the future. Any true original g-funk fan should go get this album along with his last solo release "Executive Decisions". Tight album Hutch.

5 out of 5 stars IN THE WORDS OF PROFESSOR X: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH".......2006-12-29

now this is the willie hutch stuff that i envisioned in my mind!!!! this has beats, grooves, rawness, and soul to the bone. this is my ocean view cd. when i hear this music here, i daydream in the purest forms of instantaneousness. it reminds me in an odd way of those 70's period johnny "guitar" watson albums. mr. hutch also has the curtis mayfield feel in those 70's songs. ENJOY THE RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars RIP.......2005-09-25

very Talented Songwriter,Vocalist&Guitar player from the Sam Cooke School of music making which You Can Hear Sam's Influence on Willie Hutch.Hutch could shout Vocally&then Smooth it out on the Smooth Jams. very Under-rated Cat who should have been given more respect.I enjoyed His Soundtrack work on the Mack&Foxy Brown. not to mention He was a co-Writer of the jackson Five's "I'll be there". very Talented Cat.He could balance the Funk&the Slow-Jam.RIP

4 out of 5 stars The Rest Of The Best.......2005-05-05

This UK compilation has very little overlap with the US-released *Best of Willie Hutch.* Here we can delight in mostly fast-paced and mid-tempo cuts that show how well Mr. Hutch could groove. The two collections provide a good slice of Hutch's recordings from the 70s (plus "In & Out," one of two tracks that are on both CDs). These compilations showed me that although Hutch's recordings from 1975 onward became poppier and smoother, they also became more melodically complex and beautiful. He gave up the pastiche of Isaac Hayes/Curtis Mayfield wah wah sounds and focused more on his unique strengths. I'm surprised at how overlooked he was during the 70s-- he offered genuine soulfulness and has a wonderful voice. These are, in my opinion, fine R&B tracks from a talented singer/songwriter.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest soul brother.......2003-10-28

Hutch is the man, his music is timeless. "Homeboy" Hutch should be thought of in the same breath as Marvin , Stevie, Smokey, in the ranks of the greatest of the Motown/Tamila era.

3 out of 5 stars fine soundtrack, sound quality is just ok.......2003-12-14

This album needs to be remastered. It would sound a lot better than it does now. The disc's sound quality is merely passable, not as vibrant as it should be. The work of black soul artists should get the same respect that white rock acts do.

        5 out of 5 stars tight Set.......2002-10-14

classic motown funk too basd willie was'nt known to the world but still the movie ain't bad either and this soundtrack is no joke.

5 out of 5 stars Willie Hutch: Underrated Genius.......2002-04-27

Strokes of genius abound on this excellent soundtrack to the blaxploitation classic "Foxy Brown." Willie Hutch produced and wrote every note on this record. Honestly, I wasn't familiar with Hutch until very recently, and now I am kicking myself for not discovering him sooner. It doesn't seem like he got the recognition he deserved. Why? This work is brilliant. The funky theme to "Foxy Brown" and "Give Me Some of That Good Old Love" are slices of delectable 70's soul. But the track that comes closest to my heart is the "Hospital Prelude." If this jam doesn't give you goose pimples when Hutch sings with urgency, "give me some of that good old love," chances are you are comatose. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Willie Hutch is decent..........2001-04-30

Willie Hutch is decent. This soundtrack, like "The Mack" was an interesting part of the Blaxploitation soundtrack genre. It's a shame that Mr. Hutch has been kind of overlooked. However, the music isn't as perfect as Mayfield's Superfly. The title track of "Foxy Brown" is really hot. You could get this CD, customer.
