Kamelot's latest power metal offering seems unlikely to win the collective the kind of major attention its sought for more than a decade now. While vocalist Roy Khan still emits his signature siren wail and guitarist Thomas Youngblood crafts riffs that crunch with more power than your average fast food taco, the band still lacks a unique identity, alternating between its status as a Queensryche retread or vying for listeners more attuned to Korn and Avenged Sevenfold. "Rule the World" certainly stands as one of the outfit's heaviest works to date and "Mourning Star" carries with it its own kind of majestic beauty but repeat listens reveal that Ghost Opera is little more than by-the-numbers power metal, of the kind that didn't really work when Helloween released Keeper of the Seven Keys two decades ago and still fails to satisfy today.--Jedd BeaudoinAlbum Description
American Melodic Metal masters Kamelot are back with the follow-up to their breakthrough epic The Black Halo. Ghost Opera is simply one of the most diverse metallic listening experiences of the year, containing all of the melody, power, passion and crunch that have earned them the undying respect of metal-heads around the country and around the world. The first pressing contains a bonus DVD featuring the video of Ghost Opera and a making of feature. Catch Kamelot on tour across North America late this summer!Customer Reviews:
"Sometimes I tremble when the shades unfurl".......2007-07-20
The bonus DVD is a joke, unfortunately, as it contains the video for "Ghost Opera" and then a replay of the same video which shows how the special effects were added and such. That's it. However, the bonus track "The Pendulous Fall" is excellent, so I heartily recommend purchasing this "Enhanced" version of the album for that reason alone.
"WELCOME ALL/TO CURTAIN CALL.......2007-07-17
Track one is a one minute violin solo that blends smoothly into the power of the second track. And here we immediately encounter the striking words "sometimes I tremble like a little child/that faces morning with a broken smile." Rule the World is the song, but it is about ruling your life. In fact, this whole CD is about life...and death.
You will notice a considerable contrast between The Human Stain (track 4) and track 10, Anthem, a beautiful ballad. In Anthem we have "what's a miracle/if life itself is not" and "I do know this/I'll be the best I can." Compare that to "but it hurts to be alive my friend/in this silent tide we're driftwood passing by/don't you wish you were a child again" and "but it hurts to be alive my friend/in this masquerade where all one day must die/don't you wish you were unborn again" in The Human Stain. And there in two songs, Kamelot has condensed the whole conundrum of being human. It can be wonderful just being alive and being able to comprehend life, but that package includes the knowledge of death.
Just as Black Halo had a connection to Epica, here we have two connections to The Black Halo. The first, Simone Simons beautiful voice being again included in one of the songs (Blucher, which seems to be about the death of a German sailer in World War I), is minor, but I find the second intriguing. Black Halo has the haunting Abandoned where Khan sings the part of Christ in the Agony in the Garden. In Ghost Opera, Khan moves to a subsequent setting and plays the part of Pilate. I'm wondering if the next release will fittingly end with the Crucifixion. (I may have to send Kamelot a copy of this review.)
Now, since two of the songs here, Love You to Death and The Pendulous Fall, deal with suicide, and the others with life/death in general, I again, as in my previous review, must ask myself if the subject matter has not overly influenced my attraction to the music. Again I say that the music itself is enough. However, nearly everyone has experienced the grief of loss, or considered, to some extent, their own death. Therefore, this is part of the attraction, just as it is in many examples of the best books, poems and movies. I've said it before, I'll say it again, these guys can write. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

Wail My April Moon..........2007-07-14
It took me about 4 complete listens, but I have come to find that every track is a highlight. My favorites are the title track, "The Human Stain", "Blucher", "Love You to Death", "Mourning Star", and the track that I probably consider my favorite, "EdenEcho".
So all in all Ghost Opera proves once and for all that Kamelot are here to stay. Sure, it isn't quite as good as The Black Halo, but lets be honest people: Did you ever expect to outdo that album?

Dark, somber, and thematically unified as no previous album by the Police, Ghost in the Machine deals almost exclusively with the negative effects of modern political and technological culture. The only departure from this focus is "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," a perfect pop song and radio hit. Elsewhere, the album treats such issues as the hope underlying resistance to oppression, the dismissal of most of the nonindustrialized world, the daily bombardment of words and images that overload the senses, and the frequent recourse to violence for personal or political expression. The songs are presented in what are, for the Police, unusually dense, layered arrangements. Andy Summers's guitar lines are even more ethereal than usual, with Sting's bass parts bobbing in a mix seasoned with keyboards and sax and propelled by Stewart Copeland's unmistakable, idiosyncratic drumming. While Synchronicity gave the Police their greatest success with hits and videos, Ghost in the Machine is the band's best recording. --Albert MassaCustomer Reviews:

Lyrics VS Music.......2007-03-29
Apart from token lines like: "With airy but moody synths and keyboards...", there's simply no reference at all to Andy Summers' incredibly ingenious and unique guitar playing with all its different colours and textures, his imaginative use of rhythm as well as his unforgettable riffs.
No mention of Stewart Copeland's breath-taking playing. The drumming that influenced a whole generation...
Nor is there any mention of Sting. Yes, he is a master song-writer but what about his instruments? He would have to be one of the most underrated bass players in the history of good music. As a bass player I've always admired his warm sound and his thoughtful playing. He's supportive and mostly sparse without ever being boring and possesses tonnes of tasty-ness. And what can we say about his voice?! Simply an amazing voice. A rich, totally unique tone that's instantly recognizable, combined with beautiful melodic ingenuity. And, when informed by Sting's tremendous musicality, it makes for some of the most heart-felt singing in all of popular music.
It is not my intention to ignore lyrics or their meaning. I love good lyrics as much as anyone else and I am fully aware that for a song to be a 'good song', it has to have both great lyrics and great music working in harmony. All I'm simply saying is that to concentrate exclusively on lyrics (brilliant as they might be) and to ignore the musician's/producer's contributions to the overall creation of a song is to basically relegate music's role to simply background filler. Like a movie soundtrack or a boring one-bar-loop repeated ad-nauseam in a bad Rap song.
The members of The Police deserve much more than that.

The infectious twang and pop hooks of Wilco's former efforts may be fading fast, but A Ghost Is Born is still a rewarding effort that demands repeated listening. The group's fifth album extends upon the experimentalism of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot with angular, blues-soaked guitar riffs ("At Least That's What You Said," "Hell Is Chrome"), a handful of sparse, yet catchy tunes (smack dab in the middle of the disc) that will surely keep college radio stations smiling, and a lengthy track that descends into mere static ("Less Than You Think"). Frontman Jeff Tweedy's songwriting continues to evolve: "Hummingbird" is a dreamy Randy Newman-styled love song; "The Late Greats" is a sly ode to the world of pop tacked onto the end of the album (as if using such a fun song on this understated disc was an afterthought). Meanwhile, producer extraordinaire Jim O'Rourke manages to make the most complicated arrangements here sound minimalist and laid-back. All told, it's another great addition to the Wilco canon. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
hell is chrome.......2007-05-22
This album is a masterpiece. It's simple, beautiful, thoughtful, and thought-provoking. Yes, even Less Than You Think - all 15 minutes of it. Maybe if you actually _listen_ to the intro of that song, you can at least try to understand why there are 12 minutes of noise. There isn't a single piece on this album that isn't exactly the way it's supposed to be.
Good job, Wilco.

Kind of hard to warm up to..........2007-02-27
A previous review makes the analogy between this CD and the art of Andy Warhol. But I think that Tweedy works to create great meaning and emotion, while Warhol strove to vacate art of those attributes while meditating on fame. A better comparison would be bad Abstract Expressionism from the 50's, the kind of visual noise that must have seemed smart at the time, but also kind that no one wants to view any more.
Not to over emphasize the "noise" thing. It only happens on some of the songs, and several of the songs on the CD are pretty good. However, it just feels like Tweedy is putting some distance between himself and his earlier work, and his fans. So, like "Kid A" (love Radiohead, still can't stand Kid A) it could constitute a reaction, a break from the past. I just don't want to pay to hear a reaction.
The Grammy awards given to this CD should have be a yellow flag. Grammy winning CD's are rarely the best an artist has to offer. Often, Grammys are a belated nod to talent or driven by sales. However, I will keep listening - the CD is subtle and perhaps I just need time to appreciate it.

OKAY BUT NOT STELLAR.......2007-05-18
I like songs 1, 2, 7 and the band's dance remake of White Rabbit. kaRin's voice is hauntingly similar to Kate Bush; although real heavy on the Vo-Coder. Some of the songs, instead of being entrancing tend to drone on and none of the tracks pop out as a really strong single. However, I am not sorry I bought the cd and would recommend it to others because it's easy on the ears (very melodic).

From Amazon.ca
Although it took four years for Chantal Kreviazuk to record the follow-up to her successful disc What If It All Means Something, the Canadian singer/pianist was anything but idle in between. During that 'break' she gave birth to two children, wrote songs for Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson, and recorded her fourth disc Ghost Stories at home, with husband Raine Maida (the Our Lady Peace frontman) producing.Ghost Stories proves to be a stylistic departure for Kreviazuk; rather than settle into warm, traditional ballads, these songs are frequently unpredictable. The classical music she studied as a child--combined with her love of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper (she references the album in the lyrics of opener "Ghosts of You")--has manifested into this evolutionary disc. Many songs come across as mini-operas, constantly morphing from one style and tempo to the next; as a result, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos comparisons will be made--especially in the frenetic "You Blame Yourself"--but the numbers remain stylistically her own. The anthemic "Asylum" is an impassioned highlight, inspired by a war refugee from the Congo, while "Mad About You" is another powerful moment, a love song whose chorus bursts wide open amidst Kreviazuk's fragile, raw vocals. Kreviazuk's unique "So Cold" veers abruptly from a straight-ahead soliloquy to an emotionally-exploding gospel-style chorus; while perhaps not destined to be a pop radio hit, it offers a glimpse of something brilliant, an evolving singer/songwriter who still has many colours yet to show. --Denise Sheppard
Customer Reviews:
Haunting, but not pleasing.......2007-06-03
For her previous three albums, she has taken on a more lighthearted approach to the topics she was writing about, like life, destiny and wasting of time. But in this album, she grows darker, and that darkness becomes somewhat her downfall.
"All I Can Do", "Ghost Stories", "Waiting for the Sun" and "Wonderful" are clear standout tracks in this album, with "Spoke In Tongues" making a good lasting impression as well. The US bonus tracks "Time" and "I Do Believe" add on to the good repertoire, with "Time" returning for another show. "I Do Believe" is more like her, albeit a bit darker.
However the rest are painfully hard to listen to, especially Wendy House and You Blame Yourself, where she hits sounds that she has not touched in the past.
What If It All Means Something, her 3rd album, remains her best, and though this album has some gems inside, they are still not enough to make her album as outstanding as it could have been.
Chantal - Not at her Best.......2007-05-15
I also have the CD edition with the 2 bonus tracks, which are simply her songs Time and I Do Believe in renditions that pretty much sound exactly like the originals, so don't break your neck trying to get that version instead of the regular Ghost Stories CD.
Typically, Chantal's beautiful and unique voice radiates over an entire CD of her's, however with this one, I wasn't able to get that same effect. The first song led me into the CD with grace, it was beautiful and you begin to see that this CD will be different from the others with the mystical and enchanting, almost haunting music in the first song. The Ghost of You (Track 1) is my favorite of the entire CD. The following songs, for the exception of a select few such as the first track and Waiting for the Sun (Track 9) don't capture Chantal's vocals very well and in the rest she is heard screeching and almost screaming lyrics and notes such as in track 11: Wendy's House, which is incredibly painful to listen to. Her background singers compliment her by doing the same.
This CD was incredibly disappointing. Chantal has so much talent, and this project simply does not do her justice. If any of you are first time Chantal listeners, you have to check out her CD: What If It All Means something, which really captures her vocals, and instrumental talent. There, is the true Chantal. This was an experiment gone wrong for her; hopefully she'll make a nice recover with the next one.
Sounds Better On Paper Than On CD.......2007-05-03
Last year when I saw that she had a new Canadian CD I assumed that she didn't have an American distribution deal and ordered the new CD from Amazon. But lo and behold here we are half a year later and it's getting an overdue stateside release - with bonus tracks to boot.
If you are unfamiliar with Chantal I would recommend reading the editor's notes above which tell you more about her as a performer and a person and a professional than I can. The notes will also tell you the interesting back story of this home-made (in the truest sense of the word) CD.
My job here is to offer my opinion, as a long time fan, of the success or failure of this (not so quite) new offering from this Canadian chanteuse. And that judgment is that this is just a so-so CD. The songwriting doesn't stand out - it's as if she sold out the good ones to other artists and kept the vulnerable whiny ones for herself. There is nothing musically or lyrically distinctive enough to stand out. The thematic contradiction of the counterpoint of "Grow Up So Fast" and "Wonderful" would be interesting if the subject matter hadn't been beaten to death elsewhere over the decades.
"All I Can Do" is a pro forma love song that sounds like the only shot at radio success, but I'm guessing it'll take a cover version to chart. "Speak In Tongues" ("You can never erase what you've become/I know where you're from and that you speak in tongues") gets my vote for best in show with it's brilliant arrangement and clever lyric, but I'm not sure I even understand the title song "Ghosts Of You" which posits the presence of the ghosts while the lover is still there and is "the only one that will stay the same."
Chantal's voice is too often as vulnerable as birdsong and just wore me down. She's much more effective on the songs where she projects more power such as the bonus track "Time." Though the editor above touts the quality of "Asylum," it did nothing for me. "Mad About You" was sweet but insubstantial.
Most Chantal fans will doubtless appreciate this CD to the extent the editor for Amazon did but, for me, it was a disappointment. Perhaps listening to it after the phenomenal new Joan Armatrading was my mistake, but even back when I got the Canadian import CD I wasn't particularly impressed.

Below Average Beethoven Performances.......2007-03-10
Of all old school directors such as Karajan, Toscanini, etc., Solti's performances are simply morbidly slow to the point of killing the grieving attendants with boredom. The cacophony of the oversized orchestra doesn't help either. Solti's interpretations are even too slow for a requiem. You think a regular interpretation of the 7th's second movement is slow? Wait 'til you hear this one; you're going to need a massage you'll be so stiff. The 9th symphony march is supposed to be a brisk revolutionary march calling the citizens to arms and to join the militia marching through a town. With Solti you imagine only a funeral procession coming through the town. In the Fifth the whole orchestra is almost struggling to slow down to match the strings. Karajan's interpretations are not particularly fast either but at least he breathes some life into them and the orchestra. I personally like Toscanini in terms of the old 20th century symphonic conductors and Gardiner's traditional interpretations that are at least at a correct speed and give the listener the impression they are marching off as part of a revolutionary batallion to bring liberty to the oppressed instead of being rolled to the morgue. Beethoven was a revolutionary anti-monarchist and strongly supported the idea of political change. Although Periah is a great pianist for Beethoven's concertos, there are simply better performances by him that fortunately aren't conducted by Solti such as on Sony with Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The same goes for the performances with Axe and Yo-Yo Ma. Gidon Kramer's performance for the Violin Concerto in D is also mediocre at best: there are better violinists out there than Kremer for Beethoven.
This is just not the best CD to get quality performances of Beethoven's works. Overall, Solti's interpretations are simply too sluggish and indecipherable to represent the ideals of Beethoven's music. Solti would definitely be my last choice for anything. You won't lose anything by not buying this soundtrack that's for sure: Solti's interpretations are so slow they will simply fossilize you.

Marketing people need to learn that they will actually make more money if they actually give what they label says. This five-track EP is clearly not intended to expand on Get Behind Me Satan, the Stripes' ambitious, ethos-stretching studio album that preceded it by a few months. Instead, the studio cover version and four recent live cuts culled together here seem equal parts roots-retrenchment and chronicle of Jack and Meg White's recent gig grooves. The title studio track (a cover of a standout from Canadian identical twin punk-pop duo Tegan and Sara's '04 "So Jealous" album) has been a fan favorite in recent Stripes set lists, and here Jack White invests it with a familiar, chunky-chorded foundation and equally solid vocal hooks, setting them off with evocative, just-this-side-of-Mars guitar breaks that pay tribute to Brit invasion heroes the Yardbirds. Hailing from June '05 Brazilian shows, the spare, stop/start "Screwdriver" finds Jack warbling in early Robert Plant mode, while his haunting acoustic take of White Blood Cells' "Same Boy I've Always Known" epitomizes much of the Stripes' stripped-down, back-to-the-future appeal. L.A. radio versions of Satan's gently infectious "As Ugly As I Seem" and the distortion-drenched "The Denial Twist" are forceful reminders that the Stripes' artistic bent may be minimalist, but its musical ambitions are anything but. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Walking with the ghost.......2006-03-06
It opens with a cover of indiepop sisters Tegan & Sara's "Walking With A Ghost," now White-Striped. This version is much hard-rockier and more angular, with jabs of rough guitar and wails from Jack White. Where Tegan and Sara sounded mildly perturbed by their "walking with a ghost," Jack sounds on the edge of breaking down completely. Steady there.
And, this having "+ 4 Live Tracks," we're then treated to some fairly good, low-key renditions of White Stripes tunes: a mellow version of "The Same Boy You've Always Known," where you can hear cheers and handclaps from the audience, the mournful "As Ugly As I Seem."
After the sorrowful pair of songs, we finally get some rockin'. Jack and Meg smash through the tune of "The Denial Twist," with snarly singing and lots of rough drums'n'bass. And after a hearty round of applause from the audience, they launch into the roaring bass of "Screwdriver."
Wedged in the midle of the last song is "Passive Manipulation," a solo where Meg sings, "Women, listen to your mothers/don't succumb to the wishes of your brothers..." Then Jack lets rip for one grand finale, a blast of raw vocals and equally raw instrumentation.
Well, the White Stripes know how to make their odds and ends worth the money -- smashing together a quirky cover with their live performance. While the cover is good -- not as enticing as the original, admittedly -- the live performance is what really rocks.
At first, things don't seem to be too energetic. Jack sounds very depressed, and only acoustic guitar and a few drums break through. But after a couple of very low-key songs, Meg and Jack start giving it their all. The result is absolutely electric -- kinetic music, ripping singing, and to judge from the applause, the audience loved it.
There's a muddy edge to the music, like many live performances, and it's a credit that their musical skills that the White Stripes can make this EP a good addition to any fan's collection. And yes, the cover is nice too.
great stuff, especially for collectors.......2006-02-23
The title track, a cover of a Tegan & Sara song, is great too. It actually served as a springboard for me to check out the original band, of whom I am now a big fan.
If you have the entire collection, then you will want to add this one.......2006-02-01
