The core of the Crusaders had been playing together for 20 years when they recorded this 1975 session, and they were at the peak of their popularity. You can call this music a form of fusion, but it's a group that always had its roots in populist rhythm & blues, coming of age in the era when Horace Silver and Bobby Timmons were first mating roots music and modern jazz. The big-toned combination of Wilton Felder's tenor and Wayne Henderson's trombone gives added weight to this riff-based gumbo, with Larry Carlton's guitar adding detail to the Stax-Volt ambience that stokes this music. Felder was always the band's outstanding soloist, a flexible tenor player who could add touches of Coltrane to the legacy of Illinois Jacquet. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Rhythm Joy.......2006-09-07

I have no hesitation in recommending this recording for lovers of the '70 experiments in rock/soul/jazz/fusion. The Crusaders formed their sound together when they were barely in their twenties, and by the time they recorded this wonderful stew of funk etudes, they were as one mind. Though the music may be "simple" (groove and uncomplicated melodies are the order of the day), that does not mean it lacks passion or excellence. This is some of happiest music I've ever heard; I loved it 30 years ago, I love it still.

1 out of 5 stars The ROCKFORD FILES.....and where did the "Jazz" go?.......2005-11-15

Sounds like the background music used in the 70's Rockford Files TV crime show...and a little like the CHIPS music too. Similar to music by Tom Scott from back then. The crusaders never really get hard funky or dirty funky, they are more smooth groovin funk. The sound for the times is very clean, too produced for true funkyness. Don't get me wrong I like the old 60's JAZZ crusaders, just not this 70's phase of their career...they sold out to a large extent, and continue to do so, it's where the money is. No improvisatory feel either. This is for smooth jazz lovers. hard funk lovers will be disappointed, as will true jazzers. I wish the crusaders kept their jazz chops from the 60's but they keep burying it like it never happened, even to this day, afraid to lose sales if they get too musically adverturous like their mid/late 60's true jazz albums. Their 70's albums like this are partly to blame for today's smooth jazz... in other words, not really jazz, not really funky, just kind of smooth groovin, more for casual adults and offices. not challenging, not offensive, formulated to an extent. But hey if you like this, that's cool, just dont think it's realyl jazz, or really funk. it's watered down versions, but this water may float your boat. It's smooth and casual, slightly simmers, is pleasant background music, but doesn't COOK like so many other groups from the same time period that mixed jazz, funk, and fusion...but I'm betting you don't like that stuff...you'd say it's too "out there" or just "musician's music" and you'd be right, but that's what true jazz sounds like...it challenges you a bit to like it...making it all the more rewarding once you "get it", if you ever do. if you don't then you can always lsten to this. The point of my review is that since I know they had that spark in the 60's, it saddens me that they waste their talent on more conventional music like this just to make more money. It just sounds like they are holding back as I know they can play more advanced stuff, and write more creatively, they just choose not to ever since the 60's. oh and please dont buy the comments in another review that say that larry carlton's guitar playing here is complex and burning over hard chord changes...he's actually very laid back here and mostly plays typical simple blues rock solos with very LITTLE harmonic content as the songs are mostly based on simple repetive blues scale funk riffs that go nowhere. This is not real fusion either! again real lovers of true jazz, real funk, and real fusion will not like this.

5 out of 5 stars Crusaders Chain Reaction Album: Review by Joey Horswell.......2001-09-06

This album is a "must-get" for anyone who is a true Crusaders fan. Aficionados will likely recognize this as the last album that Larry Carlton made with the Crusaders as a full-time member of the group.

While some jazz purists validate only the more traditional, straight-ahead jazz the Crusaders wrote and performed during the 60's, (under the moniker, "The Jazz Crusaders"), many of us appreciate even more, the innovation and experimentation that more characterized the Crusaders compositions throughout the 70's. The Crusaders were truly one of the first pioneers of fusion, (or "jazz-rock" as we called it back then), if not the very first. They intermixed elements common to jazz, funk, blues, soul, and rock in such a way as had never previously been done before. (And in a way that no one has been able to duplicate, since.)

Wilton Felder and Wayne Henderson defined the classic blend of Trombone and Tenor Sax playing in unison, (or in octaves), which became the trademark of the Crusaders classic sound. The entire Chain Reaction album is enjoyable to listen to, with no filler songs or "B-side" flops. This entire album is solid. Cuts, such as "Hallucinate", feature Henderson and Felder paying in fourths, giving a dissonant color to the number. The lively title cut, "Chain Reaction", features great unison playing over a bouncy, "bop" figure.

Larry Carlton shines throughout the album, playing his classic, blistering tri-tone runs through seemingly unnavigable chord changes; leaving us all wondering why he has permanently "left the building", and moved on to play only luke-warm, "Wave Station-soft jazz". Only his first solo album, "Room 335", echoed the Crusaders brand of fusion that typified those early years.

No review would be complete without mentioning Joe Sample's incredibly relaxing, yet complex improvisation style. (I wish the Fender-Rhodes electric piano would come back in vogue), and Styxx Hopper's solid grooves drive the band along making it hard to not tap your toe.

If you get the impression that I liked the album, you're right. I'm probably one of only a few people who actually own this album on original vinyl, (bought back in the late 70's), cassette, and CD formats. I've been listening to, and playing these songs on the saxophone for over two decades, and it just keeps getting better, and better.

Chain Reaction is my favorite of all the Crusader albums.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Felder plays funky bass too.......2000-12-13

Before the addition of Pops Popswell, Wilton doubles as reed and bass player, and does nothing but impress on both counts. Incredible funk throughout the album.

4 out of 5 stars Good Solid Disc.......2000-03-27

This disc shows Many different styles of this Band.Soul Caravan was the cut as is the title cut.I Like The Guest Artists featured especially Larry Carlton's Guitar work.I Have always dug The Horns of The Crusaders.Wilton Felder is the Man.same goes with Wayne Henderson and Joe Sample.I prefer some of the Other Discs by them a little more but this is a Good disc.

4 out of 5 stars Cuban Link can do better than this (3 and 1/2 stars).......2007-02-10

The former Terror Squad member Cuban Link and Triple Seis were the best emcees out of that group next to Big Pun(RIP). Cuban Link broke free and got into a rap battle with Fat Joe in which Link won hands down. This album is not as fierce as his battle rhymes but it does have its moments. Standout Tracks: CHAIN REACTION, NO MERCY, RIDERZ(where has Cap1 been all this time?), TONIGHTS THE NIGHT, SHAKEDOWN, TALK ABOUT IT(great matchup with Jadakiss), LIFE GOES ON(great plus Syleena Johnson on the hook was a nice touch) and LETTER TO PUN(120 BARS with some shots thrown at Terror Squad). These song are Cuban Link at his best. Filler: Come Home With Me, Sugar Daddy(bad first single. Makes people second guess the quality of his album), Scandalous, I Need To Know, No Falla and The Dirty Karoake skit is uncalled for. Its these tracks that weigh the album down like a ton of bricks. Bottom Line: Cuban Link's Chain Reaction shows promise even though there are songs he could have gotten rid of. Letter To Pun, Chain Reaction, Talk About It etc show that Cuban Link is lyrically 100 steps ahead of his superwack archrival Fat Joe. There is no doubt that Cuban Link can top this.

4 out of 5 stars Cuban Link - Chain Reaction.......2006-09-23

After debuting into the rap game in 1999 with the Terror Squad, Cuban Link started to get some buzz. He recorded his first solo album, "24K" only to see it bootlegged on the internet so he had to scrap it. Now years later after beefing with Fat Joe and leaving the Squad, he's ready to ride solo again with his first official debut album, "Chain Reaction."

Cuban definitely showed he got some talent and potential with this release. Even though I feel it could have been better, it was a pretty solid effort. Hopefully it won't take him another 5 years to release another album. Check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-07-29

I'm a keep it as real as I can without having to disrespect one of my favorite MCs that should have had his shine a while ago. This album was a very disappointing one considerin I wanted another 24K album for his first official release and that he didn't get to hit white america. I want him to blow up big and this album with the unconstructive beats and harsh tone in his voice didn't make it an important album to strick a nerve in the hiphop community or the industry for that matter. He needs to go back to that smooth ladies man representing more of his latin side instead of that hardcore street image.

3 out of 5 stars CUBAN LINK GIVEN HIS TIME FINALLY.......2005-10-10

Cuban has been one of those MC's that I had been looking forward to hearing from for a long time, as a member of the original terror squad he was always my favourate after Big Pun, during his time with them he had demonstrated talent which begged for a solo album. Unfortunatly his debut 24k was shelved and never saw the light of day, this new album released on new label M.O.B Records is Cubans time to show the world what he is finally capable off.
Time has passed for Cuban, Pun died, following that he fell out with Fat Joe causing him to leave the Terror Squad and now he is having to deal with the industry bullsh*t which has prevented him from releasing other albums sooner, but now it is finally here and what a disapointment.

First off this is not a bad album, Cuban rhymes with the conviction of most hip hop pros, he is a talented rapper and it is still evident here, his rhyming is not in question, however the production on this album leave a lot to be desired, the sound is typical new york rap but there are hardly any tracks which are memorable. Cuban has far too many radio friendly tracks that it just comes across as forced, although the track letter to pun is fantastic and well worth the look, most people have probably heard it already on mixtapes and the two reggaeton tracks Scandalous featuring Don Omar and No Falla featuring Zion while being very good tracks are not what Cuban is really about and he should have made sure that the rest of his album had more focus, But overall it is still decent but I would recomend that you try it before you buy.

4 out of 5 stars CUBA!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-27

Finally after years of mixtapes Cuban Link Resurfaces with chain reaction. Although im glad to see cuban link doing his thing and sh*ttin on fat f*ck joe im dissappointed in some of the production on the albulm but besides that cuban link still has his lyricism and the tracks is still hot.

He reminds me Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Uli Jon Roth & Paul Gilbert. There is a killer solo guitar on track "JB Solo", you should check it out.. it's blazing fast and bluesy!

If you like Skid Row or Firehouse music, then you will love this band too! My favourite song is: "No News Good News" and "Unleash The Love". They will release their new album and DVD very soon! So BUY IT NOW!!!!! You will not be disappointed! :)

This and the motown anthology are definite must haves for the diehard and new fan alike. This showcases some of the RCA and MOTOWN early 80's to mid 90's releases. Favorites here are "chain reaction", "swing it" (new to this reviewer), "blame it on the sun", "don't give up", "i love being in love", "i'm watching you", "sweet surrender" and the hard rocking! ("fool for your love"). Good stuff cheap!

4 out of 5 stars SOUL SUPREME FAN.......2000-05-27

This focuses on the second half of Ross' career which makes it well worth having as compilations of these of Ross are scarce. The album kicks off with one of the most famous songs in her long standing career, "CHAIN REACTION" which is an affectionate tribute to her heyday of the 60's with The Supremes. Its followed on by the reggae styled "I AM ME", the excellent Stevie Wonder penned track "Blame IT ON THE SUN" and the funky ,grooving "SWING IT" There is nothing from one of Ross' best albums "RED HOT RYTHM N BLUES" which is disappointing, but, on the whole, the album tracks selected, covers a vast range of a lot of her lesser known work despite most of the tracks being good to very good. The album closes with the heavy rock track "FOOL FOR YOUR LOVE" which by far is one of Ross' most diverse tracks with a heavy rock treatment given to it.Anyone thinking of buying this who has hardly heard any of the tracks included-buy it! A good album and worth having!
