British club DJ turned singer Craig David took the world by storm while still in his teens with his boastful debut, Born to Do It. It sold 7 million copies while he still bunked at his parents' home in Southampton, England. Two years later, David has slogged through the minefields of sudden stardom and lived to sing about it, which he does with stylist aplomb on Slicker Than Your Average. David has sacrificed some of his milk-fed innocence but none of his braggadocio, as the title attests. His sound is harder, more anxious, and much more suitable for clubs than the soft, breezy nu-soul of his first outing. This time, he deals with darker matters, such as the press's relentless scrutiny ("Why are you watching me when you should just let me be Craig") and the dangerous pitfalls of fame ("I'm not the man I used to be"). He's not the man he used to be, for fame seems to have shaken the scales from his eyes. This one-time wide-eyed romantic no longer pines for his perfect love, instead casting a jaundiced eye at the women vying for his attention on "What's Your Flava." But his newfound complexity and makes for a much more interesting album than his debut. It's a relief to watch David trade in his clean-cut pop styling for a more urban edge, rife with old-school R&B and hip-hop élan. --Jaan Uhelszki

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing after his deput album.......2006-02-03

Too much mainstream influence. It's as if his producers just threw him in the studio with a beat machine and synthetic tunes that you'd hear in every up-and-comer's album that's a dime a dozen. Craig's voice is not the average dime store album voice. What was missing on this album was the spotlight on his voice. We all know after his first album that he is better than this. Album three I believe will be the album to buy. Back to less beat machine and more CD.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Change Who You Are CRAIG.......2006-01-06

I bought Craig's CD "Slicker Than Your Average" and I was blown away by the words on the song "Rise & Fall feat. Sting" fantastic. We need alot of Craig's today!!! Thanks so much Craig for showing us that you can still write good lyrics and your CD's still sell. Please Don't Change!!!!!!!!!
Keep up the good work!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Slick Indeed!.......2005-08-07

Craig David's last album impressed me because of his unique singing style and because his music slips across several genres, which keeps the album fresh enough to play over and over. The same can be said about this album. He has a nice mix of slow jams and jump up and dance trax that just keep you going (not to mention the cool vocals of Sting in "Rise and fall")!! I also liked the CD ROM video of "What's your flava" that accompanies this album (er...CD). If you liked his last one, you'll love this one too! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this album!.......2005-08-02

I loved the album by Craig David titled "Slicker than your Average". I have wanted it for a couple of years, but I couldn't find it anywhere else but at Amazon.com. I really appreciate your site and the reasonable prices. The album receives definite five stars from me because of the artist and his slick lyrics. Plus the music, the melody, and the imagination he adds to his creations. I recommend this album to anyone and everyone. I thank you once again.

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Flava is on the Hindges!.......2006-07-22

Could Craig do it again, do it again? This is what I think smoothed out 2Step garage on R&B riffs should be. I liked Craig's first album "Born To Do It" and with songs like "Fill Me In" which was in international smash, "Walking Away" and "7 Days", but now he takes it step further with this album "Slicker Than Your Average". The first single "What's Your Flavor" is a homage to Charlie and the Chocolate factory but I think what he really had in mind was all the fine honey'z you see at the club, or what Brits would say "Birdz". This album had more of a club feel but the song "Rise and Fall" with Sting is a classic ballad. 2 Step is found in "Slicker Than Your Average", "Fast Cars" and definitely "2 Steps Back". Da straight baby making song is "Personal", this song is similar to R. Kelly, Joe and others who break it down for the ladies. I liked it but some might think it is not their cup of tea, screw them buy this album. :)

3 out of 5 stars More average than slick, actually.......2006-07-05

I bought this album based on the strength of the songs 'What's Your Flava?', 'Rise And Fall', 'Spanish', 'Hidden Agenda', and 'You Don't Miss Your Water'. However I realized that I got bored of these songs pretty quickly.

Don't get me wrong. I think the songs were well-produced and definitely have some sort of appeal. It's just that I didn't get that appeal.

But there are some standout tracks:
What's Your Flava?
Hidden Agenda
You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til the Well Runs Dry)
Eenie Meenie

The bonus disc isn't very much to listen to, to be honest. It just has some remixes, an acoustic track, and a previously unreleased track. I'd guess if you were a diehard Craig fan, it'd be something you'd be interested to get. Probably the only thing I like here is Todd's Underground Remix of 'What's Your Flava?'.

'What's Your Flava?' is wonderful, and I loved that the lyrics and the video were extremely creative, borrowing the idea of Willy Wonka's factory in Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

'Hidden Agenda' is a great pop song which is one of my staples in my iTunes library. It's a very catchy song and always fun to listen to.

'You Don't Miss Your Water' has one of the most beautiful piano intros I've heard, and the song makes a lot of sense.

Of course, the other fan favorite is 'Rise and Fall', which features Sting's vocals. Of course the most meaningful song in the disc, coupled with a very memorable guitar riff by Sting.

But there are songs that just don't do it for me, like 'Personal'. I absolutely cannot understand why this song was released as a single. I find it so immensely boring. I think 'Four Times a Lady' sounds similar to this song too, which I happen to dislike as well, unfortunately.

'Hands Up in the Air' kinda sounds like it isn't fast enough. As if it's trying so hard to be fast but it's just not done the justice it needs.

The opening track, 'Slicker than your Average', sounds a little too arrogant. I don't like it. Granted it may have a nice guitar riff throughout the song, and the rappers are good, but the intent completely turns me off. Period.

'Spanish' grew on me quickly, but it left me as soon as it came. I can't really listen to the song much nowadays.

'Fast Cars' is interesting to review - it has really interesting allusions of women to cars - but the way the song goes, doesn't really do it for me either.

I recommend this album, nonetheless, if you're digging urban beats and whatnot. And personally I feel that this is the best album out of the three he's got. But get the one without the bonus disc and save yourself some $$$.

Heard slicker in a bar. liked it: electronic lounge-ish. But these remixes are seriously different. Perhaps it will grow on me, but...

4 out of 5 stars Great cross-section of remixes and reinterpretation.......2000-07-31

I've only heard bits and pieces of Slicker's music before, but this remix collection does a really good job on each contributing artist's part to maintain a universal sound that is distinctly Slicker's among rather disparate interpretations. The music itself is difficult to describe as each track veers off the path in its own peculiar direction. Richard Devine and Scott Herren (delarosa+devine) start things off with a fast-paced glitchy electronic sputter, in some ways reminiscent of Devine's own work or his remix of Aphex Twin on the Warp 10+3 comp.... technically advanced but not necessarily the strongest moment on the disc. Superesp contributes a slower, more downtempo influenced interpretation. Matmos does their usual cut-up sample-based antics with a groovy twist, and Savath + Savalas then once again turn things around with their post-rock influences and sounds. Delarosa+Asora bring back the beat with the downtempo flavor of their mix, giving way then to the meditative mix by Mice Parade that closes out this EP. If these descriptions seem vague, it is only because this music is difficult to describe and is best heard rather than written about.

The disc contains great music that is only further supported by great art direction. Hefty Records, both in print and online, continually ups the ante on art direction and visual identity in the context of music.

    Album Description

Having grown up on hip-hop's collages, indie-punk's bedroom DIY-isms and the beat fantasias of electronic composers, John Hughes (a.k.a. Slicker and the artist behind Chicago's Hefty Records) has grasped something most others haven't in his knitting together of something old and something new. For Hughes, the common chord on We All Have a Plan, Slicker's fourth album and a pan-global, soul-jazz masterpiece made out of bits and pieces, is elemental and spiritual. "Honest" and "organic" are words Hughes uses repeatedly to describe his blueprint. And in the wake of similar cut-and-paste excursions by kindred spirit colleagues, Plan smuggles modern electronics away from indie-techno dilettantes back to the timeless land of song.

The collaborative voices and jazz tones you hear throughout the record belong to soul, jazz, funk and world music's forgotten heroes. Legendary Motor City funk-jazz cats Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison illuminate the laid-back funk collage of "God Bless This Mess, This Test We Pass". Vocalist Khadijah Anwar, once a 14 year-old soul wunderkind for mid-'70s funkateers Sugar Hill, shines on the Zapp-like electro-funk of "Knock Me Down Girl", while Detroit MC's Phat Kat and Elzhi (of Slum Village fame) add a future urban element to the proceedings. Singer Lindsay Anderson (L'Altra, Telefon Tel Aviv) gives "A Strong Donkey" a sultry jazzed-out bliss, while guest vocalist/trumpeter James Cromwell grumbles alongside her. Also appearing on the title song, and throughout Plan, is Dan Boadi, a Ghanaian vocalist residing in Chicago, who Hughes estimates affected the album as much as anyone.

Spiritual X-factors all-too rarely affect the soul and creation of computer music. Yet these are undeniably the guiding forces behind Slicker's We All Have a Plan. So natural and soul-kissed, you'd think they were part of Hughes's plan all along.

Slicker is the brainchild and alter ego of John Hughes III, son of the famous filmmaker John Hughes. Hughes has previously contributed to Chicago's postrock music scene as the leader of Bill Ding, an arty bunch of musicians who released two interesting CDs before calling it a day. With Slicker, Hughes's newfound penchant for the skittering rhythms of alternative electronica is ambitiously fulfilled. Incorporating elements of drum & bass into his disjointed discourse, Hughes and his sidemen find common ground between instrumental rock ensembles like Tortoise and German synthesizer mavens such as Mouse on Mars. Using guitars, bass, vibes, and cello to flesh out his electronic art form, Hughes reveals authentic compositional skill and a sonic vision that is both distinctive and entertaining. Progressive music with a good sense of humor. --Mitch Myers

This record is freaky. It's quite unlike any other electro out there. If you're into strange beats, unusual samples (including a really scary dog growling in stereo), then buy this record. If you enjoy such artists as Aphex Twin, Mu-Ziq, Squarepusher, etc., you should check this out. Or if you're just into weird new things, this is for you.
