Product Description
Their 1968 debut is their lightest and most charming effort. Waltzing melodies give way to thunder-of-doom bass runs, and the story-bookish lyrics have a forlorn, yearning quality. With its oddly hollow sound, one is never really sure whether the tone is supposed to be playful or ominous. 11 remastered tracks. Includes 12-page booklet withall original artwork, lyrics & liner notes plus new extensive liner notes by Thomas Koppel & an introduction by David Fricke. Universal. 2001.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent 1968 Debut Album from Savage Rose.......2004-02-14

This album was quite a surprise when released in 1968. Not very much progressive rock music had come out of Denmark in those days. And suddenly "Savage Rose" was there.

Great compositions in various styles. A powerful voice (Anisette). Great band, consisting ot the two brothers Thomas and Anders Koppel ( Keyboards - they wrote all the songs), Annisette (vocals), Alex Riel ( drums - already a well-known at the time), Femming Ostermann ( guitar ), Jens Rugsted ( bass) and Ilse Maria Koppel ( harpsichord).

Most of the songs are incredibly strong. Great melodic tunes like "You Be Free", "Everybody Must Know", "White Swan's Marriage Clothes" and "Sleep". Powerful tracks like "Savage Rose" and "Open Air Shop". And the outstanding single "A Girl I Knew" - both catchy and haunting.

    No weak tracks here!

    Album Description

An unheralded landmark in art rock, this features Savage Rose keyboardist Thomas Koppel's score for a ballet by Flemming Flindt (the title translates to 'Triumph of Death'). Nearly entirely instrumental (one song features Annisette on vocals), this is one of the finest classically influenced rock records. Moody and melancholy, at times almost doomy, yet always melodic, this 40-minute selection of haunting pieces prominently features the group's unique underwater organ sound and makes for compelling listening. Remastered reissue includes 8-page booklet with all original artwork & liner notes plus new extensive liner notes by Thomas Koppel, & introduction by David Fricke from Rolling Stone Magazine. Universal Music. 2001.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic instrumental album from Savage Rose.......2006-12-07

My first exposure to the Savage Rose (from Denmark) was through the Supernatural Fairytales box set. I generally liked the track presented (Dear Little Mother) and went out and bought this 1972 album, which as it turns out is 99% instrumental (vocals on Dear Little Mother only) and excellent. My understanding is that keyboardist Thomas Koppel wrote the piece as a musical accompaniment for the Royal Ballet's performance of Dodens Triumf (Triumph of Death).

The concept underlying Dodens Triumf is pretty heavy and reflected in the cover painting which is meant to represent an old and oppressive society that was disappearing like the sinking sun. This concept was clearly stated in a passage originally printed on the cover of the 1972 Polydor LP which was taken from the Algerian writer Franz Fanon and his book "The Wretched of the Earth". It is a pretty strong statement and has been reprinted on the inner pages of the CD reissue booklet.

The musicians on this instrumental album include vocalist Annisette (she has a brief wordless vocal and a vocal part on Dear Little Mother only); Anders Koppel (Farfisa? organ; harmonica; flute; and percussion); Thomas Koppel (piano; harmonium; percussion); Alex Riel (drums; percussion); Rudolf Hansen (acoustic and electric guitars; bass guitar); and Ole Molin (acoustic and electric guitars). The musicians are all pretty good although this music is more about texture and atmosphere than mind-blowing ensemble work. The music is organ and acoustic piano saturated with a great deal of percussion. In general, acoustic instruments are favored more than electric instruments, although the electric guitar does poke its head out every so often. One last note - Annisette has the most unusual voice I have ever heard. Although this is really unflattering (and maybe a little unkind), her voice reminds me somewhat of Betty Boop. The liner notes even quote the late Lester Bangs (one of prog rock's greatest enemies I might add) describing her vocal style as "Minnie mouse on a belladonna jag". You get the idea.

This music is symphonic, pretty gloomy, and there are some supremely haunting moments. All of the tracks flow together into a single, multi-movement suite and as such there is great continuity. There are elements of classical (which reflects Thomas Koppel's classical training), what sounds like traditional folk music, and some rock music. Apart from an interesting drum/percussion solo on Soldaternes Dod (Death of the Soldiers), this is a very quiet album dominated by the unusual organ sound that Anders manages to get and the classically influenced acoustic piano work of Thomas.

Although only 500 copies of Dodens Triumf were initially released, eventually something around 250,000 copies were sold. In fact, the sheer success and the classical, instrumental nature of the album tore the band apart and this would be the last recording with the original lineup. All in all this is yet another fantastic album of experimental rock from Continental Europe and is very highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars One of Savage's Rose's Finest, However..........2004-07-05

This is the third Savage Rose album I listened to since discovering them, and one of my favorites. If you are one of those folks who have just started becoming familiar with Savage Rose, just a note that the majority of this album is instrumental. BEAUTIFUL instrumental music at that, but that also means there is very little of Annisette's hauntingly beautiful vocals.

For those of you who have never heard of Denmark's Savage Rose before, this is one of the greatest groups you have never heard about. Thomas & Annisette Koppel have been the nucleus of the band since they formed in the 1960s, and are one of those rare groups who seem fearless to experiment with their sound and style from one album to the next. I can't conjure up a close North American marital comparison to Thomas & Annisette, but when I think of them, I picture a couple with the independent, creative, and cohesive spirit of Fred "Sonic" & Patty Smith.

If you're looking to buy your first Savage Rose album, this is a good start. The other recommendation I would give is "In The Plain," which is, in my opinion, the best album they have ever produced.

One of the most well-known rock groups from Continental Europe, Denmark's Savage Rose recorded a wealth of intriguing and eclectic progressive rock in the late '60s and '70s. In their early work, one hears faint echoes of the Airplane, Doors, Pink Floyd, and other psychedelic heavyweights combined with classical jazz and Danish-Euro folk elements. Their arrangements rely heavily on an incandescent, watery organ that sounds like nothing so much as psychedelic aquarium music. The most striking aspect of the band's sound, however, was the vocals of lead singer Annisette. Her childish wispy and sensual phrasing can suddenly break into jarring, almost histrionic wailing, like a Janis Joplin with Yoko Ono-isms, and eerily foreshadows Kate Bush's style.

Stars in their native land, Savage Rose also achieved a bit of underground success abroad, and several of their albums were released in North America. Between 1968 and 1978, the group released nine albums, moving from vaguely psychedelic rock and the heavily gospel-influenced Refugee to the nearly classical ballet score Dodens Triumf and the folky, nearly all-Danish Solen Var Ogsa Din (their first eight albums were sung entirely in English).

Always a radical band -- the Black Panthers even invited the group to play at a benefit for Bobby Seale after hearing one of Savage Rose's records -- they took the extremely radical step of withdrawing from the studio entirely by the end of 1970s to focus on using their music to support leftist political causes. Although they continued to make music and perform, they were often heard at benefits and free concerts, actually playing in Lebanese hospitals, schools, and refugee camps at the P.L.O.'s invitation. They eased back into recording in the early '80s with Danish-language efforts on small labels, eventually getting back into the mainstream music business with established distribution. Their mid-'90s album, Black Angel, was their first English-language recording in many years, and a substantial Danish hit. By this time the only remaining members from the original band were Thomas Koppel and Annisette (now his wife); Koppel also records and composes symphonic music as a solo artist

            5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2004-07-26

This Savage Rose album ranks just a step behind "In the Plain" and right alongside "Doden's Triumf" as their greatest work. The opening and closing tracks, "Wild Child" and "Screams Of Captured Birds," which spotlight vocalist Annisette at her most intense level, are by far the most powerful songs, but this entire album is excellent.

If you are interested in Savage Rose and have never heard their music, I highly recommend you start with "In the Plain," which is, in my opinion, not only the best Savage Rose album I have ever heard, but one of the top 10 greatest albums I have ever heard. Still, "Wild Child" is a healthy runner up.

Annisette Koppel has one of the most recognizable voices out there, kind of a cross between Kate Bush, Betty Boop, with a huge dose of psychedelics and love thrown into the ingredients. Hmmm, as I read my comparison, I realize it might sound like I am being sarcastic, but that is far from true; that is the best way I can describe her voice, and it is a beautiful voice! There is something very loving and passionate in her tone, and if you have not heard her, you are missing something wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs - Great Voice!.......2004-04-22

"Wild Child" was the last album of Savage Rose`s early period. The band split in early 1975 shortly after one of the founding members Anders Koppel had left.

When the band reformed again some years later, their style had changed markedly. Hereafter the band was mostly Thomas Koppel and Annisette, supported by various musicians.

"Wild Child" contains some of Savage Rose`s most powerful recordings and features impressive vocals by Annisette.

The opening title track is a terrific soul-rock recording with Annisette in front - a standout!

"Stewball Was so Tired" is jazzy up-beat track - again with Annisette in top-form.
After a short instrumental track follows next highlight "Madhouse Wedding" - strong melody and powerful performance!

Equally strong is "Ain`t My Baby Beautiful" - a melancholy ballad which is, as the title indicates; just beautiful!

"Tarantula" is rather short instrumental - a little like "Stewball Was So Tired".

"The Shoeshine Boy is Dead" is a little difficult to get into - not one of my favourites!

"Screams Of Captured Birds" which closes the album, is a fine blues-soul tune.

Like all the early Savage Rose albums; this is a great album, with standouts in "Wild Child", "Madhouse Wedding" and "Ain`t My Baby Beautiful"
