Sloppy and vapid.......2007-05-17
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not truly sure that there is such a thing these days as a good recording of the Four Seasons (Original or otherwise --- I'm not sure what "Original" is supposed to mean here). Of the many warhorses to be found in the repertoire, it is (for me at least) one of the more annoying & shallow. Nonetheless, the gazillions of violinists who have recorded it have, for the most part, turned in performances that at least have a reasonable amount of energy to them. Such is not the case here.
All of the concerti have a homogenized quality to them and are oftentimes quite lethargic. I didn't think one could make these pieces more bland, but Vanessa-Mae has proved me wrong. Apparently the only time of year the Seasons are supposed to capture are the Dog Days of Summer...humid & stagnant.
Going from bad to worse, Vanessa-Mae then tackles Tartini. Unlike Vivaldi, Tartini actually did write interesting music & revolutionized the use of double stops, among other things. Sadly, Vanessa-Mae has no earthly idea of what she is trying to say as she plays this, and once again, the music just slogs along with a stultifying sameness. The odd arrangement of the continuo parts hardly helps.
She would be well-advised to stick to the pre-fab crossover confections in which she has specialized, because this album demonstrates that she really doesn't have the chops for the challenges of the classical genre, even with relative lightweights like Vivaldi. Thus far, her forays into the classical world have been uninspiring, at best. Continue to rely on that which has made you wealthy, dear child. Stop trying to earn our respect, because you'll never get it with pablum like this.
Barely Deserves 1 Star.......2006-05-26
I think that this "interpertation" of Vivaldi's Four Seasons is a stupid experiment gone wrong. Her Inventions and "Improvisations" might be a nice idea, but to a real musician this recording is a mockery of good musicianship.
Childish, Mischievious,Ludicrous !.......2005-07-29
It sound like a 5year old mischievious girl fooling with violin for pure curiosity! it make no sense to serious classical music but probabily still sounds 3stars if you take it for a vivaldi-pop.
Moving, Beautiful and Powerful.......2005-07-21
The Original Four Seasons and Devil's Trill Sonata by Vanessa-Mae is my favorite CD. I bought it 4 years ago because I wanted to add violin music to my diverse collection of CDs. I listen to a variety of music, including jazz, rock, blues, modern, and opera. I never expected to enjoy Vanessa's CD as much as I do.. It's moving and beautiful and has the power to transform an average day into an exceptional day.
Not my favorite recording of the 4 Seasons.......2005-07-08
I am a violinist, and truthfully don't really like the way Vanessa plays the 4 seasons. Her tone is fine, but she just seams to be lacking in certain areas. It doesn't sound like the rich, beautiful 4 seasons I know. I relize that it is baroque and shouldn't sound TOO rich and sappy, but she should take more time with them, truley get to know the pieces instead of just playing through them. I would definitley prefir the standard 4 seasons the way Vivaldi wrote them, rather than Mae's version- with her out-of-place sounding artificial harmonics(which didn't sound so good tone-wise) and her strange sounding double stops and octaves. If you think Vanessa's 4 seasons sound "cool in a newer way", great- buy them. But if you truley have a trained classical ear, consider a different version of the 4 seasons.

Customer Reviews:
A delicate memorial.......2000-03-20
This is one of the best piano-trio discs of the 1990s, and a high point in Jones's career. The disc is a memorial to the late Thad Jones, and his brothers Hank and Elvin are joined by George Mraz, bassist with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band.
I've often found Hank Jones a little too tasteful & immaculate to be absorbing (see, e.g. _Steal Away_, a disc that starts off terrifically but by the end is sunk by its ponderous seriousness); but this disc is a big exception. The emotional atmosphere of the disc is tender & gentle, but it's intellectually satisfying too: Jones's playing is as closely-argued as can be imagined.
The other great pleasure of the disc is hearing Elvin Jones play brushes for the duration: while that doesn't mean thunder is absent (see the ending explosion of the opening track, with Jones growling ferociously), you do get to hear how subtle & tasteful Elvin can be. "A Child Is Born" is turned into a drum feature, & surprisingly, it works beautifully.
What can I say? This disc has been generally unsung: but it deserves to be recognized as one of the great memorial albums, one of the great trio albums...one of the great Hank Jones albums.

Customer Reviews:
Not really sure what's going on with Saariaho.......2005-10-28
This Ondine disc collects three relatively recent works by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Jukka-Pekka Saraste with other talented musicians. Saariaho's earlier work was characterized by a focus on timbre and the use of electronics, but she seems to have moved on to an interest in melody and eschews electronics.
"Cinq reflets" for soprano, baritone, and orchestra is an arrangement of five scenes from her 2000 opera "L'amour de loin", concerning the consuming love of the 12th century troubadour for the countess of Tripoli, whom he never met. Here Pia Freud performs the part of the countess and Gabriel Suovanen the part of Rudel. This doesn't stack up to Saariaho's earlier work, but is entertaining enough listening.
"Nymphea Reflection" for string orchestra (2001) is a reworking of her "Nymphea" for string quartet and electronics. Originally Saariaho intended to merely replace the electronics with additional strings, but found that they were not capable of the same subtleties, hence the extensive rewriting. The result is certainly less thrilling than the quartet, but still very interesting in its textures. Certainly the best of the pieces here.
"Oltra mar" (1998-1999) is a set of seven preludes for the new millenium for orchestra and choir, which last part is here the Tapiola Chamber Choir. Going from "Depart" to "Arrivee" (in that order), only three of these preludes have texts, by an Arab poet and African pygmies, while the rest have mere vocalizations. The sixth, "Mort" is in memory of Gerard Grisey, the spectralist composer who influenced Saariaho significantly. Some of the material here later found its way into the opera; the first movement is used for the pilgrim's journey at the beginning of the fourth act. I must admit, I don't enjoy "Oltra mar" at all. It is almost reminiscent of the vacuity of ideas found in the works of the "holy minimalists" like most of 1980s Arvo Part.
Saariaho's earlier work is simply stunning. The beauty of pieces like "Amers" and "Du cristal ...a la fumee" defies description, and part of their success is the focus on timbre and the possibilities electronics bring. Now that Saariaho is writing melodies and electronics are nowhere to be found, I feel that her work has lessened. The first two pieces here are still entertaining, but it doesn't match what came before.
three dramatic works -- operatic, orchestral and choral.......2005-06-12
One might think that with her growing reputation as one of the best contemporary composers, Kaija Saariaho would be recording for larger labels than Finland's own Ondine. As it turns out, that is exactly right -- the complete opera L'AMOUR DE LOIN, which premiered in Salzburg in 2000, and which won the Grawemeyer Composition Award in 2003, is scheduled for DVD release on Deutsche Grammophon later this year. In the meantime, the most excellent Ondine label has brought us these "Five Reflections on Love From Afar" (2001 -- 29'28), taken from the opera, featuring the soprano voice of Pia Freund and Gabriel Suovanen's baritone. The setting is the 12th century, and the characters include a troubador, a countess, and a wandering pilgrim. The sentiments are lofty and remote, as well they might be given that they are after all "from afar." Award notwithstanding, it strikes me as stolid and static. Once again, I'm forced to wonder if there is anything but disappointment in merely listening to music (opera) which is designed with a dramatic, visual component.
I am much more impressed by the other two new works by Saariaho. "Nymphea Reflection" (2001 -- 21'40) is a new version of the piece originally written for string quartet and electronics -- see my reviews of both recordings, by the Kronos Quartet on Ondine (DU CRISTAL ... A LA FUMEE) and the Arditti Quartet on Naive/Montaigne (FROM SCANDINAVIA). Utilizing the orchestra (the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducting), Saariaho creates Xenakis-like glissandos, and other sounds that were previously created with electronics, sequences based on spectral analysis and Ligeti-like microintervals. The piece has six sections, each with a distinct texture, all inspired by Monet's painting of water lilies and the metamorphoses created by rippling water.
The final of the three new works, "Oltra Mar" (1998/9 -- 21'53), features the Tapiola Chamber Choir and the FRSO. The work has seven movements, "encompassing the whole of human existence between departure and arrival." No, I didn't reverse the two -- in this metaphysical work, we depart from and arrive back in heaven/the infinite, with our terrrestrial life in between. "Oltra Mar" was dedicated to Gerard Grisey, the composer associated with the technique of spectralism, one of Saariaho's most important teachers. This is a powerful work, and it closes with the following lines, identified as a funeral lament of the Pygmies:
"The sky has cleared, the eyes have dimmed, the star shines.
The person has gone, the shadow has vanished, the prisoner is free."

Lovely!.......2007-06-19
I absolutely love this CD and needed to share it so I purchased two for friends. The music is so beautifully done! It's lovely music for meditating or journeying to, performing ritual to, or just for relaxing and reflecting. It takes me away to some far-off place, where I can day dream or contemplate, or just do nothing.

A Few Flaws Aside..........2004-02-11
There were only a couple things about this CD that somewhat dissapointed me. On the tracks of Farkas speaking, I would have liked to have heard more dialogue relating to advice on how to actually play the horn. The interviews and narrations are still very insightful as to how Farkas himself got started and why he loved to play and teach, but there wasn't much advice as far as actual horn playing goes. Along with that, much of the music on the CD is quartets being performed by his students. These quartets are very nicely recorded, but I myself would have liked to hear more of Farkas playing. These minor items aside, the CD is still INCREDIBLY valuable to any horn player. Farkas performs 4 of Gallay's Unmeasured Preludes, which offer great insight as to his interpretation of some very difficult etudes. Farkas's narration tracks, while not offering much in the way of actually playing the horn, do give the listener a glimpse into his perspective on some of his experiences as a horn player. The excerpts also let anyone interested hear how a true master of orchestral horn playing performs some of the famous horn passages in the orchestral repertoire. Flaws aside, it still gets a 5. Buy this one.
Farkas summarizes his life and plays a little.......2003-03-16
One would expect to hear more of Farkas' playing, rather than quartets performed by his students. Farkas' rendition of the "Unmeasured Preludes" are fabulously played, thrilling to hear. His shared reflections inspire one to achieve greater heights of perfection and enjoyment in one's own musicianship. The infectious nature of Farkas' love of the horn easily passes on to the listener in the interview sections.
For the horn player in your life........2002-06-01
If you are a horn player or have a serious horn player (french horn, that is) in your life, this is a must have. There are several tracks of Farkas talking about horn playing which are priceless. The playing - etudes, orchestral excerpts and some orchestral snippets are a valuable record of this extremely important American horn icon. This is one to sit back and learn from. This is a great companion to The Art of Horn Playing written by Farkas in his middle years and the biography by Nancy Jordan Fako "Philip Farkas, a happy worthwhile life".
