Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice try but this is just a repackaged effort.......2005-11-09

'Complete Eddie Money Live' is little more than a ten song rehash of Eddie's 1997 live set, 'Shakin' with the Money Man', which contained fourteen tracks. That album was quietly released on a smaller label, CMC International Records, and it also included four new studio tracks. This release takes one of those new studio cuts ("Something to believe in") and supplements it with nine of the ten live cuts from 'Shakin' with the Money Man.'

A straight-forward reissue of that 1997 album wouldn't be so bad, since it has disappeared from most store shelves. However, 'Complete Eddie Money Live' is pointless because it doesn't use all of the cuts from 'Shakin' with the Money Man.' The other three new studio cuts from 1997 are noticeably absent here, including the excellent Christmas song, "Everybody Loves Christmas." The good news is that the only live cut not used here, "Gimme Some Water", is not a major loss. The live cuts that made it here are the best ones.

The other knock against this album is that the sequencing of the live tracks differs from the source album, 'Shakin' with the Money Man.' That live set was set up in a way that all of the tracks flowed together. Here, the running order is edited and you can tell when you listen. There is little sense of continuity. Originally, the studio cuts led off 'Shakin' with the Money Man' before going into the live stuff. Here, the studio track that is actually used closes the album.

It is clear that the label issuing this, Calamari, was hoping that Eddie Money fans would buy 'Complete Eddie Money Live' thinking it was taken from a different concert than 'Shakin' with the Money Man.' Labels that reissue live sets tend to do this, which explains why they shuffle the running order and remove a few cuts. A trick like this is usually done a few years after the original release came out. 'Shakin' with the Money Man' was issued in 1997 and 'Complete Eddie Money Live' in 2000. The hope is that, with some time, buyers have long forgotten about the previous album and pick this one up not knowing the difference. This same material (slightly altered) has also been issued under the name, 'Eddie Money- Greatest Hits Live: The Encore Collection', which I have previously reviewed. At least that budget priced cd is a little bit better than this one, but still no match for the original 'Shakin' with the Money Man.'

Would I recommend this? No, not when 'Shakin' with the Money Man' is only a few bucks more and will give you four more tracks that were not included here. You'll also get the original liner notes and photos from that album. As you'd expect, there is nothing here that hasn't been seen (or heard) before. No new material, whatsoever. Why do I give this three stars? Well it is a cheap purchase, for one. Second, the material on here is from an extremely good live performance (and album) by Mr. Money and his band. Eddie turned in a high-energy performance proving he was far from finished, at a time when people were saying he was. All of his greatest hits are covered to perfection. Forget about this cd, unless you are just a passing fan interested in a more casual purchase. I highly recommend 'Shakin' with the Money Man', which you can easily find separate reviews for. No Eddie Money collection is complete without the original album these songs were taken from.

3 out of 5 stars It's just a sampler..........2001-06-20

Made in USA in 1999, Serial# DRC-12590, Playing Time 41:04

Why only 3 stars? Well, I'm trying to convince you to NOT buy this disc... Is it bad? Not at all, but these types of re-issues drive me crazy.

This album is in fact a re-issue of EM's 11th album, 1987's "Shakin' With The Money Man", but with 4 tracks REMOVED! The original release had 4 new tracks, plus 10 tracks recorded in concert at the Galaxy Theatre in July 1997. Only 1 of the new studio tracks has survived here, and 1 live track has been omitted (besides the fact that everything's been shuffled around).

So unless you're at your nearest gas station and have the sudden impulse to grab this, go for the real thing: "Shakin' With The Money Man", a full hour of good music, with 4 new studio tracks. And teach companies like CALAMARI Records (!) a lesson: you want the full release, not some cheap clone that's got FEWER tracks...

4 out of 5 stars Eddie still rocks.......2000-11-23

I have seen Eddie Money nine times live in concert. Four of those times in the last year and a half. This disc represents exactly where Eddie Money is in his life. This is not his best work, but shows how good he still really is. He has definately aged, but still knows how to rock with the best of them.(The DVD of this show is just as good!) From the opening guitar riffs of Two Tickets to Paradise, to the ending notes of (Wanna Be a) Rock and Roll Star, he can really sing his ... off. Eddie has a remarkable back-up band with him, bringing some re-newed life into some of his songs. I would definately add this disc to your collection! Since his sales have been down, one only knows how many more Eddie Money releases we will be blessed to receive from this awesome entertainer. Also look into his catalog of other releases. He and his band are " still " putting out some great material, even though you do not here them on our radios.ENJOY...it's worth it!!!
