Lost their edge..........2004-06-07

Perhaps a bit more technically capable than their last release (Odds Against Tomorrow), but the raw energy and youthful exuberance of the once really good band with lots of potential has been traded in for the sake of playing it safe. Suppose that's what growing old is all about, but still wish they would take a few more chances.

Seattle shoegaze is taking over, and that's good!!!.......2002-02-08

Yes, the old Seatlle sound is almost all behind us now- dirty, stinky, grungey, flannel wearing, long haired, head-swirling, stupid looking hesher dudes. FINALLY GONE!! YES!! Although Nirvana and Mudhoney were good, the rest can go to hell. Now it's time for the new bands to take over- KINSKI, VOYAGER ONE, and MELODY UNIT. The world will be a better place, er, at least Seattle will.
It's ironic how in the early 90's the whole grunge thing was taking over, starting in Seattle. At the same time the whole shoegaze scene was taking off in England. Of course disgusting grunge over-shadowed what was happening 5,000 miles away. The dream pop bands never stood a chance against the wrath of lame grunge fans. Now, a decade later this little scene is starting up in Seattle. Call it what you will; Shoegaze, dream-pop, noise rock. It doesn't matter because now it is finally getting a chance to thrive. Basically I love the fact that it is happening in Seattle. Wonder if ol' Soundgarden will get back together and buy some new clothes and effects pedels? Let's hope not.

I actually haven't bought the CD yet - I am buying this it after I write this review - I have heard the songs "Suite for Caesar" on the radio, as well as "Kona Song". I don't know how anyone could not love these two songs. They seem to me to be the perfect songs - "Suite for Caesar" being the perfect slower paced song, while "Kona Song" is the perfect faster tempo song.
I can't wait to hear the other songs on this CD - I actually went to see them live after hearing the songs on the radio, but the CD wasn't out yet, so I couldn't get it there. They sounded really great live and I recommend seeing them play if you have the chance. I'll come back and write another review once I've gotten the CD!

The Melody Unit is relaxed and happy in the studio, and it shows. Clearly their new album is the product of several months of hard work (their last album was 1999!) and these tracks flow into your veins like a smooth Seattle latte. There is an elegant beatitude just below the surface that--as silly as it sounds--gives birth to happy thoughts. This is particularly true for "kona song," "snoqualmie" and "nutation 1." This album shattered all of my narrow ideas about what Seattle really sounds like.

Still one of my favorite CDs. The upbeat sound can boost your mood anytime of day. The mix of musical influences found in every track keep this CD from getting stale and it stays in constant rotation in my player and it has for 5 years now.
