A classic.......2007-05-24

Nico's impact can still be heard and felt today. The fact that this album was released in 1967 baffles me when you consider the sound of popular music of that time. Nico was a true original, and perhaps one of the first authentic "alternative" artists of our time. This album is beautiful, string-laden and passionate. Nico can make you feel blue without totally bringing you down. Her voice is what it is: imperfect, childlike and yet (most importantly) VERY MUCH HER OWN. Listen with an open mind, don't listen to the Nico nay sayers, and cut the girl a break: she was only trying to infuse some beauty into this ugly little world.

Wonderful Collection of an Angel's Voice.......2007-05-20

This CD contains many lovely songs, Somewhere There's a Feather, Little Sister and many more. Sung by Nico whose distinctive and quite low voice is bliss to the ears.

Her style of music being unique and quite brilliant.

My Melancholy Muse.......2007-01-19

With a voice like a slightly off harmonium (which she frequently played on her subsequent releases), Nico was a total original. After singing a few songs on the Velvet Underground's debut album as their Warhol-implanted chanteuse then getting ousted from the band, Nico recorded this, her debut solo album. The atmosphere throughout "Chelsea Girl" is haunting, mournful and a little mysterious, even when the lyrics of a given song are optimistic or hopeful. However, most of the material she works with here is quite morose. She covers one of Jackson Browne's saddest songs, "These Days", a truly depressive beauty. Stand-out tracks for me include the ode to Andy Warhol's Factory characters "Chelsea Girls" written by sometime lover Lou Reed and the ghostly "Eulogy to Lenny Bruce" by Tim Hardin. This song really gets to me as I know first-hand how the pain of drug addiction affects not just the user but also those close to the addict. The decision to include this song on the album is the very definition of 'ironic' since Nico's struggle with drugs is well documented.

Nico's later releases sound very different from this record as she finds her own voice as a composer and musician. Are they better than this album? I don't really think so. I think that they're all of a piece. But where this album's main instrumentation is guitar, strings and the occasional woodwind, Nico's later, more personal CDs use synthesizers, the aforementioned harmoniums and the like to convey her unique solo compositions. So she started out folky with this one and gradually becomes more avant garde as her career progressed.

No, oh please no.......2006-12-10

There's nothing avant-garde here, and nothing that will benefit from listening with an "open mind". The problem is not that Nico can't sing. In fact she can, a little. The material lacks style, is waaaay over produced and has none of the genius seen in the Velvet Underground album that made her famous. Than goodness she quit that group.

Save your money. The promoters of this nonsense are the kind of people you read about in The Bonfire of the Vanities.

i can't believe how much i like this record.......2006-12-01

i always thought nico was just a beautiful babe andy warhol had stuck the velvet underground with. as a marketing ploy, too spice them up with some sex appeal. that is, until i heard this album (cd) recently. it's a great, unique record. something very different. she sings contempoaray songs circa 1967 in a heavy german accent. songs by jackson browne, lou reed and bob dylan among others. strangely it works. brilliantly. it's sexy, mysterious, melancholy and timeless. it lingers in the mind. the haunting sense of both sadness and timelessness. almost mournful. quite an achievement for the beautiful babe andy stuck the velvets with. this is one of the best generally unknown great albums of the 1960s. i wasn't familiar with it and i grew up in the 60s and was a big velvet underground fan. check it out. you wont be sorry you did.

Not such a great sampling...........2001-01-21

Some of these songs are really stretching for a romantic mood. Especially some of the On the Town songs. It's not that they're not good though....All of this music is from other CDs that have been already been released. Don't limit yourself to just these songs. Go ahead and buy the other recordings. Deutsche Grammophon did the On the Town recording along with West Side Story and Candide. I'd recommend a different recording of West Side Story though. The one of Wonderful Town is the kinda newly released complete version of the musical. It's a good but expensive one. Also, this recording left out some of THE greatest love songs from Peter Pan (Dream of Me, Peter Peter), Trouble in Tahiti (Well of all people, There is A Garden, Finale), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seena, Lud's Wedding), and Quiet Place (There is so much, too much). I think this recording, though okay, is a stumbling block to finding out about the real Bernstein saga of musicals. And if you are still getting this recording, the sound quality is really good. West Side Story is done by the masters of the opera so they sing it that way. Candide is operetic too, but then again it is an operetta. That's about all I have to say on this recording.

nice but operatic.......2000-02-23

This is a nice collection of Bernstein miscellany. Note however that the West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide are the "operatic" versions, with Te Kanawa and Carreras, Von Stade and Hampson, and Jerry Hadley, respectively. Bernstein conducts WSS and Candide and Tilson Thomas OTT. The surprise is the bits from Wonderful Town, which was recorded on JAY, not DG like the others. Featuring Ron Raines and Rebecca Luker, it's probably the most authentically "Broadway" of this set.

Richard Tauber is sensational singing popular music........2003-05-13

I have heard this CD many times, it is my favorite Richard Tauber recording because it features the popular music (including operetta) that I love, the selections are all in supurb mono sound and because most of the songs are in English.

My favorites are "Vienna, City of My Dreams", "My Gypsy Dream Girl", Let Me Love You Tonight" and "Lippen Schweigen" (Merry Widow Waltz).

Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12

Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

A great first album for a talented singer and songwriter.......2006-09-17

Chelsea really is a soldier's girl--she's married to a soldier in the US Army, stationed in Europe at the time of the writing of this review. All but two of the songs, Faithful Friend and Wonderful Merciful Savior, were written by Chelsea while her husband was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, between 2003 and 2004. Indeed, several of the songs were written about or for her husband, like How Did You Know, Love of a Warrior, and A Dream Worth Waking For. I'll Be Okay was written when Chelsea found out her husband was being extended for three to four months... on the very same day he was supposed to finally leave Iraq and return home to Germany. The exotic Arabesque sounds of Flood in the Desert are clear, and the song definitely begs to be a single--not that the other songs are any worse, of course. Flood in the Desert, Wonderful Merciful Savior and Faithful Friend are instant Christian classics, and also remain amongst the most downloaded individual songs on Chelsea's CDBaby website. Legacy of Love is a touching tribute to Chelsea's late uncle Lee, a kind-hearted man whose life left a clear mark on the lives of those he touched. The last track, Never Surrender, bears a strong resemblance to Evanescence; it fits the least with the other songs, but it is meant to be that way, as it is about sexual assault and the emotional scars that victims must battle for a long time afterward. Musician and collaborator John Hemingway, incredibly, plays every instrument on the album, in perfect harmony to Chelsea's strong, beautiful singing. The two compliment each other just as well as much as Quinn Weibe's duet with Chelsea on Faithful Friend and Wonderful Merciful Savior. Indeed, Quinn's smooth voice sounds much like that of Peabo Bryson, and both singers would be well-suited on a romantic ballad for a Disney feature film, a la "Beauty and the Beast" or "Aladdin". Stand With Me is a delightful, upbeat track featuring a veritable backup choir of Chelsea herself, John, Quinn, Chelsea's close friend Bonnie, and even Bonnie's kids and Chelsea's own mother! A superb, strong first piece of work from a promising artist--highly recommended for any music lover fond of good balladry!

I love nico to death, but however this isnt her death. She doesnt sound like herself. She sounds more like an Irish Tenor (listen to Femme Fatale) than the german goddess who once sang with the velvet underground.....

Nico deserves alot of credit for a lot of up and coming female acts...as well as male acts. THe YEAH YEAH YEAHS, THE STROKES, MEG WHITE..(in the cold cold night)
This is a must have for any Velvet Underground or Nico follower.SO in the words of Missy Elliot "COP THAT DISC!!!!"

Nico's Best Live Performance.......2002-01-05

Nico's collection of live albums can be summed up as average at best, with sometimes having some strong moments. Her brilliance is best caught in the studio rather than the stage, but some how this album almost catches the power and force that could be heard in "Desertshore" and "The End"; this is also the best recorded live album of hers that I have listened to. An incredible ode to 80s synth is displayed in "One More Chance" and "Purple Lips" (both exceptional tracks and better than the "Drama of Exile" versions). Without the heavy instrumentation, Nico sounds just as good with her harmoniun on "Procession" and "Janitor of Lunacy". These songs aren't enough to cover up the album's disappointments though. The harmonium based "Tananore" and "My Heart is Empty" both fall flat and will make you pop on your "Camera Obscura". "Sixty-Forty" proves that heavy synth doesn't work for everything (this song should have been handled with a traditional guitar/drummer back up) and the reworking of "Femme Fatale" is weak. At least the a capella "All Tomorrows Parties" and her somber "Saeta" are morbidly endearing.

A work of stunning poignancy and clarity. Recorded in 1985, "Chelsea Girl Live" draws from Nico's work with the VU and her later solo work. The track "Sixty Forty" is absolutely haunting, and her take on the Doors' "The End" is a revelation. Classic songs, through and through, that have never been appreciated as they should. Startlingly honest...
