5 out of 5 stars Beach Music Bingo.......2006-11-05

If you are a fan of the Beach movies from the 60's, then you can not afford to miss this wonderful cd featuring Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Dick Dale, Donna Loren, Nancy Sinatra and many more. There is a good diverse sampling of songs from these movies. This is DEFINITELY beach music at its best!
If you remember characters with names such as Frankie, Dee Dee, Big Drag, Eric Von Zipper, Candy and Deadhead, you are NOT going to want to miss this cd.
I will admit that there are some good songs missing from this cd. But if you buy THE VERY BEST OF DONNA LOREN on cd as a companion piece to this one, you will have most of the best music from the AIP Beach movies.
What are you waiting for? Buy this cd before Eric Von Zipper comes over and hits you with the Himalayan suspenders trick.

2 out of 5 stars Well inentioned but narrow, weak collection of an intriguing genre.......2006-08-14

While the prior reviews are well written and helpful, they contain some errors that any potential buyer of this CD should be aware of.

First, there is much, much more to the musical legacy of the "Beach Party genre" than small number of pieces in this collection. The majority of the material contained on this CD is from the seven American International Pictures (AIP) productions made between August 1963 and April 1966 (Beach Party, Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Pajama Party, Beach Blanket Bingo, How To Stuff A Wild Bikini and The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini). However, during that period over two dozen "clones" of these films were made by competing studios, many containing music that in terms of quality far exceeded the AIP productions (not all studios treated their musical interludes as "ephemera.")

Secondly, there were indeed numerous full original soundtrack albums released back in the 1960s for many of these films, some of the better ones including Wild On The Beach (released by RCA in 1964), Surf Party (by MGM in 1964), Get Yourself a College Girl (also by MGM in 1964), A Swingin' Summer (by Hanna Barbera Records in 1965), Out of Sight (by Decca in 1966) and Wild, Wild Winter (also by Decca in 1966). Among the artists who appeared in those films and whose numbers are on the soundtrack LPS -- and whose pieces are not included on the Varese CD collection -- are Sonny and Cher, the Righteous Brothers, The Dave Clark Five, The Animals, The Turtles, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Freddie and the Dreamers, Lesley Gore and Dick and Dee Dee.

Third, not everything on this CD is "available for the first time." The Dick Dale number was released as a single by Capitol in late 1963. The film cast rendition of "Bikini Beach" and the Exciter's "Gotcha You Where I Want You" are both on Candy Johnson's 1964 "Bikini Beach" Canjo LP. The "wide stereo" version of Annette's title piece for "Pajama Party" is identical to the one released on the Buena Vista stereo version of "Annette's Pajama Party" LP forty-two years ago.

And fourth, neither Jan and Dean nor the Astronauts ever appeared in or were involved in any way with the AIP productions. Their pieces on this CD are from Beach Party clones (Columbia's 1963 and 1964 productions of "Surf Party" and "Ride The Wild Surf").

Those observations aside, what are the high and low points of what you get in the Varese collection?

Well, to put it bluntly a handful of treasures (as previously observed, the original film version of Loren's "It Only Hurts When I Cry" from Beach Blanket Bingo, as well as the second Pyramids number from Bikini Beach and the Beach Boys title number from the Universal clone "Girls On The Beach") mixed in with a lot of throw-away filler: everything from Muscle Beach Party (the weakest musically of any of the seven AIP films), Avalon's two forgettable numbers from Beach Party and the title piece from Dr. Goldfoot & The Bikini Machine being among the most notable wastes of space on this CD.

Unfortunately, the producers of this album seem to have had a limited appreciation of the range of music in the Beach party genre, for they focused on trying to cover almost every AIP film (irrespective of music quality) to the exclusion of all the other great pop in the contemporary clones. In addition, they -- for unknown reasons -- skipped over some of the best material in the AIP movies. Specifically, here are the "crown jewels" of the Beach Party genre that should be included in any good collection:

- Annette's classic pop love ballads from the AIP series. Specifically, "Treat Him Nicely" and "Promise Me Anything" from Beach Party, and her duet with Tommy Kirk in "There has to Be A Reason" from Pajama Party. For good measure, I'd also throw in "The Perfect Boy," Annette's upbeat moral ballad from "How To Stuff A Wild Bikini" (That song arguably being the best piece she did in the entire series).

- The Righteous Brother's screaming performance of "Justine" from A Swingin' Summer (why the rather bland Rip Chords number from this film was included by Varese is beyond me!)

- Dick and Dee's wonderful piece ("Heartbeats") from Wild, Wild Winter. The Jay and the Americans performance of "Two Of A Kind" at the end of the film also warrants a mention. Frankly, the soundtrack of this film is so good (probably the best of any Beach Party clone) I'd also include the orchestrated main title piece as well as the pounding, wall-of-soundish number (amusingly titled "Our Loves' Gonna Snowball") performed by the somewhat obscure -- but still glorious -- Jackie and Gayle duo on the beach early in the film.

- The tough version of "Round and Round" performed by the Animals at the end of Get Yourself a College Girl. Despite the silly scipt, Eric Burdon manages to grimace through this whole number in his classic swarmy form.

- The bouncy "Never Comin' Back" from Surf Party (a fantastic "were finally at the beach" number) sung by Jackie DeShannon, Patricia Morrow and Lory Patrick.

- Little Richard -- in his textbook out-of-control form -- pounding out "Scuba Party" early on in Catalina Caper, a 1967 production that was the last curtain call for the genre, the final movie that most film historians categorize as falling into the "Beach Party" category.

- And for good measure, the strange mix of The Supremes and the beach, in the form of "Beach Ball," the pulsing title piece they perform live in the 1964 Paramount film of the same name.

Ah, a collection containing these numbers would not only transport one back to the mid 60s - it would dramatically raise your appreciation of the Hollywood pop legacy of that period!

5 out of 5 stars What You Need To Know.......2006-07-07

Just in time for the summer season is the first release ever to collect songs from the beloved beach party films of the '60s. The core "Beach Party" films featured Frankie Avalon and Annette singing and acting, along with some of the biggest recording artists of the day (The Beach Boys, Dick Dale, The Kingsmen, Jan & Dean, Nancy Sinatra, Donna Loren), yet there never was any official soundtrack albums issued for the films. These musical numbers made the "Beach Party" films the full-length music videos of their day. Six songs are appearing for the first time anywhere.

Party! and Stack-o-Tracks are two of the most unusual conceptions of the Beach Boys' Capitol era. After scoring two hit albums and the smash singles "Help Me Rhonda" and "California Girls" in '65, the Beach Boys' label seemed insatiable. So, literally on the brink of recording Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson and company retreated into a studio for a few nights with little more than some acoustic guitars, a couple bongos, and their spectacular voices. Perhaps taking its cue from Trini Lopez's "If I Had a Hammer" and the early "live" recordings of Johnny Rivers, Party! presented what seemed a spontaneous performance of a few band chestnuts, three cuts by archrivals the Beatles, some telling oldies, and even Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin,'" even if the "party" was actually a track of laughter and small talk dubbed in later. Ironically, the album also produced one of the band's last big chart hits, their lively cover of the Regents' "Barbara Ann."

The Beach Boys' plummeting post-Pet Sounds fortunes again inspired Capitol to try and cash in on the band's feel-good hits, releasing Stack-o-Tracks, what was effectively an interactive album: the instrumental tracks of several key hits and album cuts were presented sans vocals (and originally packaged with music, chord charts, and lyrics), allowing fans to sing along. Unfortunately, few in the turbulent summer of '68 were interested in harmonizing to "Catch a Wave" and the album failed to chart. But to hardcore fans it remains a rare window into Brian's remarkable prowess in the studio. This digitally remastered edition features three great new backing track bonus cuts: "Help Me, Rhonda," the still spectacular "California Girls," and "Our Car Club." This long out-of-print twofer package also includes notes from Brian on both albums, as well as the insightful analysis of Beach Boys and the California Myth author David Leaf. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars There ain't no party like a Beach Boys Party!.......2007-05-09

Cuz a Beach Boys Party don't stop!

You know what I can't stand. This whole all proper roads lead to Pet Sounds hogwash that's become gospel to music geeks and critics. This is an artistic step back, huh? I mean, it's just the Beach Boys playing really catchy songs, sounding great and showing off their pure musical gifts with limited studio trickery. Listen: Pet Sounds is a masterwork, but it's not the only game in Beach Boy Town. They were a rich and eclectic musical force. They had many sides. Brian Wilson had many sides as a composer, producer and performer. If you read his liner notes rather than the Pet Sounds obsessed music critic's, you'll see that Brian has a lot of love for this album and he had a blast recording it with the boys. Heck, just listen to the album itself and that's what you'll hear: One of the best pop acts in history having a great time in the studio. Does it matter anymore that it wasn't a real party than the fact that the Beatles weren't really Sgt Pepper's band? Think of Beach Boys Party as a concept album if that floats your pretentious boat. And whatever happen to rock & roll love? This is even more of a pure rock & roll album than the great Wild Honey. Really. Beach Boys Party is one of their best albums. And it's not an artistic retreat. Nor was Summer Days (and Summer Nights) which actually demonstrated the full RANGE of Brian Wilson's genius far more than Today or Pet Sounds did. The Beach Boys had the sadness, but they also had the euphoria. To ignore this latter side is to shortchange oneself. People don't focus on only the ballads and serious Beatle songs. They enjoy "Back In The USSR" and respect it just as much as "A Day In The Life". The same should be done with the Beach Boys. Beach Boys Party is just as much Brian Wilson as Pet Sounds. Stop thinking about the history surrounding music and just listen to music. This album just fills me with joy. It doesn't hurt that I drove down Sunset Blvd. on a Saturday night while blasting it last week. Try it sometime if you can. Bitchin' stuff, people.

Stack O' Tracks isn't bad either, but it's really the Party you're buying this for.

3 out of 5 stars Let's do "Luau"!.......2006-06-21

In late 1965, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys was working on his masterpiece, Pet Sounds. Capitol Records was pressuring him for a new Beach Boys album in time for Christmas, but Brian wasn't about to rush to finish Pet Sounds. So, a compromise of sorts was reached. The Beach Boys went into the recording studio and quickly banged out the Party album. It features the boys playing acoustic instruments and singing cover versions of some of their favorite songs. No new songs were written for the album. The performances are pretty sloppy, with forgotten lyrics, missed notes and lots of clowning around. The band's wives, girlfriends, relatives and friends were brought in to hang out and talk in the background, to make it sound like a real party was going on. In fact, friend of the band Dean Torrence shares lead vocals with Brian on the hit "Barbara Ann". It's a fun album, but not really one of the band's best.

Stack-o-Tracks featured just the instrumental tracks to 15 Beach Boys songs. That's right, a Beach Boys album without the Beach Boys on it! Well, I suppose that's not technically true, because they did play some of the instruments on their albums, but most of the instruments were played by session musicians. Anyway, hearing just the instruments theoretically allows Beach Boys fans to study how Brian Wilson put together the backing tracks to some of the bands classic songs. It's somewhat interesting to hear, but the songs definitely sound better with the vocals. The CD adds three bonus track instrumental backgrounds, the hits "Help Me Rhonda" and "California Girls", and the obscure "Our Car Club".

3 out of 5 stars The strangest twofer CD from the Beach Boys.......2005-03-18

NOTE: I own the 1990 version of this twofer not the later remaster, so I'll comment on the songs rather than sound quality. Some others have said that the first edition transfers sound better because of the NoNoise processing used but I haven't been able to compare the two yet.

It was June 1965. Capitol was becoming worried that too much time was going by as they waited for Brian to wrap up what would become "Pet Sounds" and they were pressuring him for a new album. Brian's answer was to gather a bunch of friends together in the studio as an "audience" and record stripped back covers of some of their favorite songs. It's not a "great" record, but it is a fun record and Brian succeeds in creating a party atmosphere. It also can be seen as pointing the way toward the "unplugged" records of the 90s and on.

The album it's paired with is definitely for obsessive armchair quarterbacks and intrepid karaoke enthusiasts only, though. "Stack-O-Tracks" consisted of only the musical backing to Beach Boys hits and was released by Capitol in 1968 after sales they were less than happy with of "Smiley Smile" and "Wild Honey". "Stack-O-Tracks" was the only 60s era BB album that failed to dent the album charts.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Spirited versions of 50s party faves "Hully Gully" and "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" stand out, Dennis turns in a tender rendition of the Fab's "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", a close harmony from Brian and Mike on the Everlys' "Devoted to You", a cover of the Regents' 1961 hit "Barbara Ann" (with an assist from Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean) became a left field smash for the band.

Among the instrumentals from "Stack-O-Tracks", it's nice to be able to hear the intricacy of the bass part for "Sloop John B.". In the "do my lying and my sighing" portion of "In my Room" you can pick out what sounds almost like a church organ following the melody that isn't easy to pick out in the final version. "Wild Honey" sounds almost avant garde by itself with odd organ stabs here and there. It makes you more aware of how perfectly placed everything in a Brian arrangement is to make it cohesive when it's all put together.

LOW SPOTS:
A loose version of "I Should Have Known Better" fares poorly, Mike's sense of humour was weak at best much of the time..(witness his "reworked" lyrics for "I Get Around/Little Deuce Coupe") and did anyone really WANT a "Stack-O-Tracks" version of "Our Car Club" to analyze in detail??

BOTTOM LINE:
If you find it cheaply, you may enjoy having the "Party!" tracks but unless you're a fanatic about the BB music, you probably don't need "Stack-O-Tracks". Let your level of enthusiasm for their music be your guide....

1 out of 5 stars Maybe better loved by early Beach Boys fans...........2005-03-04

This twofer pairs two albums that, honestly, I have little use for.

It could just be me, I'm definitely a fan of the artistic peak of the Beach Boys rather than the hits stuff, but the whole "Party!" concept sits wrong with me. The idea (if you don't know) was to record stripped back versions of songs like would be played at a party (acoustic guitars, hand drums, multiple lead vocals in sing-a-long fashion) and then add background noise to it to sound like a party. The result? Good performances are marred by background noise.

Mind you, I don't really feel there's many good peformances on the disc-- its all pop songs from the past few years, largelyfiller except a pretty fun version of "Tell Me Why" and a great "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" by Dennis.

"Stack-O-Tracks" is interesting, conceptually-- Beach Boys songs without vocals, but largely unnecessary-- the better of the material is the Pet Sounds stuff, all available as backing tracks in the Pet Sounds Sessions box, the balance of it is a couple songs from "Wild Honey" ("Darlin' and "Wild Honey") and a bunch of older tunes, most of which lack the complex instrumental arrangements that were present on later Beach Boys albums.

Really only for completionists or anyone who would be interested in hearing the backing tracks isolated from the vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Should be 5 Stars Except for One Thing...........2005-03-04

The Stack-O-Tracks part is missing the music booklet so I had to order the reissue of the original album on eBay in order to get it. They explain the size was the reason in the new booklet but any Beach Boys fan devoted enough to want to get these albums is going to be a little pissed when they realize it's not in there. Party is kind of interesting but there are about 2-3 songs on it that are really good. Barbara-Ann being the only hit. But singing along to to Stack-O-Tracks is a lot of fun and great vocal practice- especially if you love the Beach Boys!

Who can't resist singing the theme song to Strawberry Shortcake? The music rocks and the lyrics are catchy. The songs on this CD are taken from three recently released Strawberry Shortcake DVDs: Seaberry Beach Party, Adventures on Ice Cream Island, and Play Day Surprise. My 5-year-old and 3-year-old daughters really enjoyed watching the movies, so we got the CD so we could enjoy the music in the car. As an added bonus, the CD insert includes song lyrics, names of the singers, and song lengths.

This might be the best "crank it up in your car" CD ever, particularly if you came of age in the 60's and 70's and like all the Beach Boys and other classics on this CD. The live recording quality is quite good, and it rocks all the way through. They're about a good as the artists they are covering.

    4 out of 5 stars Live Papa.......2007-05-07

Having been a fan of this group since I purchased California Project some years ago I was unsure if the group could once again reach the level of excellence demonstrated in that album. To my surprise and given that this is a live recording the quality is excellent with smooth laying of tracks and that variation on a theme that is synonymous with live performances. If you like quality instrumentals mixed with excellent voacls then this is fantastic value. Highly recommended album.

    5 out of 5 stars Outta Site!!!.......2004-09-05

I just got my copy of Papa Doo Run Run's newest CD "On The Beach". It's OUTTA SITE! These guys sound more like the Beach Boys than the Beach Boys do - and this album is LIVE! Yikes! - move over Mike Love. There's 25 songs here - half of them are BBs songs and the other half are pure gold Classic Rock! My teenage kids even love this CD - go figure! This is real feel good cruisin' music. PDRR's "On The Beach" has found a permanent home in the CD player in my car.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning sound. Tight performance. Papa Doo's best yet!.......2004-08-25

This is a live recording of Papa Doo Run Run's performance on the beach at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in August 2003. If you haven't heard this band's Beach Boys-like vocal harmonizations, you will be shocked at the likeness. The performance is full of energy and captures well the live atmosphere in which it was recorded. I am amazed at the quality of the sound engineering of this live recording. The highs are crisp, the bass deep and taught, and the dynamic range astounding - a sure test of your audio system's capabilities! It's as close as you can get to actually being there! I would not hesitate to recommend this to anybody who likes "Surf" songs and "Classic Rock Beach Party" tunes!

    3 out of 5 stars a 'Micksed' bag.......2005-06-16

Having just visited Disney's California Adventure, I was looking for those great instrumental versions of Beach Boys tunes they play in the park. Unfortunately, this isn't it. On the plus side, it's a pretty slick tribute album, if you can get past the goofy (and Mickey and Minnie) voiceovers between the cuts and over some of the instrumental breaks. Mark Linett, no stranger to Beach Boys fans, did the mixing, engineering, and co-produced, along with Fred Mollin, whose Blue Sea Band gets points for the faithful recreation of the California sound. Personally, I could've done without the female 'Kids Chorus', whose only worthwhile contribution was as the cheerleaders on Be True To Your School. Another caveat to Beach Boys purists: they've Disneyfied the lyrics here and there. In I Get Around, for instance, "we've never missed yet with the girls we meet" becomes "...the kids we meet" and "went to the dance lookin' for romance" in Barbara Ann is now "...when you gave a glance". As Goofy would say, "Garsh!" (If the Beach Boys have to be cleaned up, let's hope the good folks at Disney have the decency to leave the Beatles' canon alone...!)

Meshugga Beach Party is actually Mel Waldorf (with drummers Shig Komiyama and Tom Rockwell), and his Twenty Songs of the Chosen Surfers is just what it sounds like: traditional Jewish songs played in the style of surf music, i.e., klezmer meets Ventures. Sound a little hokey? Well, maybe. But the two styles mesh surprisingly well. When this reviewer's Jewish father saw Pulp Fiction and Dick Dale's "Misirlou" began playing over the opening sequence, he expressed pleasant surprise that Quentin Tarantino was using a Yiddish folk song in his film. And he wasn't too far off--the tune actually began life as a Greek zeibekiko dance. Worth checking out if you'd like to hear a new twist on "Hava Nagila" or "Shalom Alechem"...or just like surf music, well-played. --Benjamin Lukoff

The songs of the Jews and the sound of the surf guitar. So grab your surfboard, a bobby-pin for your yarmulke and don?t forget the sunscreen! The whole mishpuchah will be there to kibitz, nosh and dance the Hora at the Meshugga Beach Party! Cowabunga dude!!!

4 out of 5 stars it gets in your head...and that ain't bad.......2006-09-26

If you love Jewish Music or surf guitar... you will have a new favorite album. It got my Dad's toes tapping... and I don't think he ever liked either Jewish Music or Surf Guitar... so anyone may like it. It is that good.

    Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Why can't we all just get along?.......2006-01-10

Not that there was any great hue and cry for such a thing, but this album answers the musical question, "What would happen if you crossed classic Jewish melodies with surf music?"....(hey, you got choklit in my peanut buttah!...) And somewhat surprisingly, the result ain't half bad...The two genres go surprisingly well together, or perhaps more accurately, Hava Negila, Dreidl, et al. done by a surf band, as surf tunes, are a natural...soon, you forget you've heard them any other way!

5 out of 5 stars A hora on the beach.......2005-12-23

You'd think it's a huge divide - lovers of surf music and those who favor traditional Jewish melodies, but the two can come together here and dance a very exciting hora on the beach. A surprisingly enjoyable musical fusion with excellent guitar playing.

5 out of 5 stars even my Bubbe loves it!.......2005-12-22

This record is awesome! The Jewish melodies are great with the surf guitar sound - I love it, my kids love it, my Mom loves it, even my Bubbe loves it. Now they all want to go surfing - oy vey!

well i thought these guys from orange county were never going to do a follow up to their 2001 release the DYNOTONES ! but when i saw the cover art from the world famous ROCKIN JELLYBEAN from japan, i knew it was worth the wait. 14 smokin tracks with an enhanced vidio on the opening song done by piero of the mad fabricator dvd fame was just a sneak of what was to come. this disk opens with a link wray style grinder but moves nicely into some reverb drenched traditional surf, crunchy stomps, Ghoul surf ala "the deadly ones", fuzz numbers bobby fuller would be proud of,and a couple of swinging r and b style dittys sure to get your rear end movin. being that this thing is all over the vintage 60's map is why i gave it 5 stars to begin with. if you dig ventures, astronauts, lively ones, link wray, dick dale, drag raceing, frankie and annette bch movies bobby fuller, davey allen and the arrows, then this disk is a must have. file under BOSS ! !
