Music for yoga is such a cliché that you could slap that moniker on a Barry Manilow CD and have it sold as a soundtrack for Downward Facing Dog pose. Yoga music has become a made-to-order commodity, and rarely attains the level of art. The title Music for Yoga and Other Joys doesn't bode well, but then, it has Jai Uttal, a veteran of world fusion going back 15 years and a devotee of kirtan singing teaming up with multi-instrumentalist Ben Leinbach for a series of extended improvisations. Leinbach creates a shifting back drop of chilled, Indian-derived grooves and textures like liquid mercury dipped in a fractal swirl. It's a perfect modal backdrop for Uttal, who improvises freely on an Indian stringed instrument called the dotar, electric guitar, and even banjo. Pieces like the 26-minute "Govinda" extend in a free fall until a rhythm loop drops in. Uttal swaps to a fuzzed out electric guitar solo that eventually merges into an improvised kirtan, his voice coiling in note-bending spirals like soul singing from the east. This may be music for yoga, but it's the other joys that will keep you coming back. --John Diliberto

3 out of 5 stars Yoga music but not that joyful.......2007-05-18

I got this CD though my library based on reviews here and the sample cuts. After listening to this CD a few times, I was done. I enjoy yoga music but not this one.

5 out of 5 stars The title for this CD is full and true.......2007-02-24

I love Jai Uttal's kirtan. There so much shakti that it is a great support for my asana. It supports full fucus and a joyful experience in my asana. Tears come to my eyes when I feel the bhakti expressed though this kirtan!

5 out of 5 stars I feel the joy.......2007-02-09

This is a wonderfull yoga cd. Jai has a beautiful haunting voice and the five songs progress perfectly to fit your asanas. I look forward to buying more of his cds

5 out of 5 stars surreal.......2007-01-10

Jai Uttal along with Krishna Das present music to balance the world.Any person remotely aligned with world peace / yoga or betterment of the world will relate to the mystical chants and attitude expressed here. This album should be compulsory for all liked minds.Wonderful !

5 out of 5 stars Great Massage CD.......2006-12-12

I am a massage therapist and use this CD almost exclusively as background music for my sessions. I especially like the fact that it has a subtle rhytmic pulse almost throughout (rather than the airy/tinkly/spacey feel of a lot of massage music). I also like Uttal's chanting and judicious use of unexpected instruments like electric guitar. And above all, this music really adds to my clients' massage experiences. (Now what to do with all those other CD's?)

4 out of 5 stars Hula with an R & B spin!.......2007-05-13

I enjoyed the mix of traditional hula with some songs taking on an R & B spin.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome for KIDS! Puts them to sleep!.......2006-03-19

I listened to this music (my daughter is half Hawaiian) when my daughter was a baby ten years ago and it would always soothe her and put her to sleep because it's so soothing and beautiful. Now, my son, when he teeths he is inconsolible! He will not stop for a bottle, to be rocked, sang to, put down in his bed, etc. But I play this, and not even 3 seconds later, he is on his way to la la land. It is wonderful. I recommend it to any parent! Or anyone who wants to de-stress.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD.......2006-02-17

Keali'i Reichel has such a nice mellow voice.
His Music is so soothing and Kawaipunahele is my favorite CD of his works!
Keali'i Reichel includes familar songs along with the Hawaiian theme that puts you in a very mellow mood.
Only wish I had this CD when my kids were all small.
I have bought two of this CD one I bought in Hawaii and this one I bought for my girlfriend because she drives a Limo and would use it in the Limo.

5 out of 5 stars Feel the Spirit of Aloha.......2006-02-08

I bought this CD on Maui, listened to it while we were there, brought it home and listened to it and, thanks to the included lyrics, learned the words to all the songs. I don't speak much Hawaiian, but I now can sing some songs in Hawaiian. Keali'i Reichel has a wonderful voice, great talent, a love for Hawaiian traditions and his legacy, and I can feel the Spirit of Aloha as he sings the songs on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars You've got to have this one!.......2005-08-30

As you know, all of Keali'i's CD's are recommended. This one was his debut CD, released in 1994. It features traditional Hawaiian favorites such as "Akaka Falls," as well as original compositions including "E Ho'i I Ka Pili," "Kauanoeanuhea," and the title track, "Kawaipunahele." It also contains cover versions of The Beatles' "In My Life" and Sticks' "Come Sail Away." Keali'i's chanting comes across at the beginning of "In My Life" and in the last track, "He Mele Inoa No Kawaipunahele." Be sure to pick this one up!

Plucked from a wet afternoon of busking Bizet and Puccini to passersby on the Piazza in Covent Garden in the spring of 2001, soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo Karen England soon found themselves singing in slightly larger venues: the FA Cup and Champions League soccer finals. That the management company doing the plucking had recently performed a similar Cinderella crossover act for Russell Watson offered portent, and indeed the Babes--the moniker began as a joke--were soon on their way to this recording debut. The marketing shtick and its soccer connections may offend purists, but it's the football hooligans that the Babes are trying to win over here; can Borodin soothe the savage Manchester United fan? Their classically trained voices mesh gloriously, with England's warm mezzo showing particular character in her solo turns.

The repertoire choices here cover material that may already be familiar to fans of Charlotte Church (i.e., Delibes "Flower Duet") and other crossover acts, but they do include some pleasant surprises, like Offenbach's Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann and "You Live On in My Heart," a reworking of Ennio Morricone's enchanting Cinema Paradiso theme with lyrics by Knight. But in a rush toward the musical middle of the road, it's the productions themselves that sometimes overwhelm the Babes with bathos ("Ave Maria"), hollow thunder ("Aida 2002"), and electro club kitsch (the 'Vibe Tribe' mix of "Flower Duet"). Former Art of Noise mainstay Anne Dudley's tastefully restrained coloring of Tchaikovsky's "1001 Nights" is one of the notable exceptions. They're babes, they sing opera--with fair promise--for the masses, and if they turn one in a hundred from football hooliganism to a well-mannered appreciation of Grieg and Dvorák, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

overorchestrated, overproduced aural wallpaper...that said, still, these women have wonderful voices and are worth hearing. They are oversold,too...Opera Babes! Indeed. Folks who like Enya will like this.

5 out of 5 stars simply beautiful, so just enjoy it.......2007-06-11

my daughter has taught me to love opera. this immediately captured me. the Babes' voices blend so beautifully. I love it! who cares about Puccini, Classic Opera, blah, blah, woof, woof. I love this album

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy renditions and amateurish.......2007-05-15

I heard one of the selections on Sirius and liked it so I bought the CD. Upon hearing the entire CD I was disappointed that the only selection I liked was the one that prompted me to buy the product. The voices are nice but they are simply adding voice to opera masterpieces that do not fit. They are certainly not of the caliber of Sarah Brightman or Charlotte Church and don't look for that. Their sound is mellow, dim and without the emotion that does an inservice to the opera pieces they sing. I found the CD lackluster and in all honestly very "amateurish".

5 out of 5 stars Great songs reinvented, with a twist.......2006-09-30

Expanding upon the recent interest in Gregorian chant fusion as well as rich-voiced solo vocalists such as Josh Groban, operatic soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo soprano Karen England offer full-vibratoed, somewhat modernized interpretations of favorite classical themes. Backed by chorus, orchestras, keyboards and drums, they draw from such diversely satisfying works as Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly," Grieg's "Piano Concerto in a minor," Dvorak's "New World Symphony," Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream," Orff's "Carmina Burana," Delibe's "Lakme," Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffman," Schubert's "Ave Maria," and Verdi's "Aida." Some of the arrangements are fairly traditional, while others are noticeably enhanced. The emphasis tends to be on pretty pieces with sweet melodies, though a few are more intense in nature (#1, 4, 5, 15 and 17). A couple of pop songs, still sung in operatic style, are thrown in for good measure, although they don't have the same appeal and mystique as the old favorites. All of the selections feature both vocalists together, singing in lovely, close harmony. The arrangers of this elegantly hip music include Jon Cohen, Noely, Frank Gallagher, Deni Lew and Anne Dudley, with multi-language lyrics (for the adaptations of instrumental works) by Rebecca Knight and others. I have to admit that I occasionally found myself longing for the modern additions to be more consistently interesting and distinctive--in other words, equaling the artistry of the classics that they're accompanying. Track #1, which really shines, is a well-done example. Alternately, perhaps the source songs might have been better off left in their pure, original styles rather than watered down with schmaltzy, predictable underpinnings that don't add much to the music. But like Enigma did for medieval chant, the Opera Babes are endeavoring to bring some wonderful, time-tested music to a wider audience, fusing it with modern idioms in way that is artistic and generally appealing. For more opera fusion, compare the work of Amici Forever (a group of five singers, both male and female), and the oddly packaged but similar-in-concept album "Coco de Mer" by Adam Plack.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Beyond Imagination.......2006-02-26

What I really enjoyed about this album was its distinctive sound and arrangement of the material. I enjoy classically performed opera and was surprised how much I like the Opera Babes' versions. Of course, the wonderful voices added immensely to the high quality of this product.

sorry, but i have nothing good to say about this c.d. i was very disappointed with it.

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Talent, Realized But Unrecognized.......2006-04-14

Kill me now. I'm not sure I want to live in a musical world in which music this good is lost. So if it's that good, why haven't you heard of Gabrielle Gewirtz? I'm glad you asked.

We live in a world of musical sysiphus, ny friend, and artists whose music does not have acceptable backing or grass roots momentum are pretty much lost to the public. But of course, you know this. Better more Springsteen or Stones than the unknown. And so talent lies unnoticed but by a lucky few. In this case, I consider myself lucky.

Gabrielle combines the best of what she has in "Wide", not the least of which is considerable talent. She is just branching out from her folk and gospel roots to light jazz and the combination is captivating. To pull it off, she invited some of her favorite musicians to participate, including percussionist/electronics whiz Clancy who produced and bassist-extraordinaire Nicholas d'Amato. The result is a beautifully recorded but extremely personal Gabrielle album... the best of both worlds, shall we say.

She plays acoustic guitar, as do most 'folkies', and she sings very well, but the key here is songwriting. She has a way of fitting her voice to various moods of the pieces which can at times be quite disarming. Take, for instance, "She Smiles", an uplifting rocker with very slight jazz tinge in which voices fill the chorus so that her vocals become controlled, but free. Or "No Sign No Sound", which is at one and the same time introspective ballad and choogling rocker. Or "Melina" and "Whose Life" where her voice floats over simple but extremely apt and well done arrangements, and which are superb three in the morning when you're crashing songs. There is a bit of Kate Bush there, and maybe Joni Mitchell, and possibly Sandy Denny and a thousand other fine singer/songwriters, but the music is all Gabrielle Gewirtz (except for the excellent pop jazz of "I Know You Know" and the plagiarized but extremely well done arrangement of Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time") and it won't take more than a few listens to strike home. Gabrielle has the talent. All she needs is the audience.

Taking a chance is tough, I know, as expensive as music is these days, but Gabrielle is worth taking a chance on. "Wide" could easily be the next decade's lost great album, though it is worth much more. It is worth being a hit, if I might be so bold. In my head, it already is.

Good chill tracks. I have all the other Buddha lounge CDs as well as Arabic Lounge, whe something works stick with it. Ilike this CD for warm up, Yoga, Pilates, stretching. Also good to chill to very calming rythems.

4 out of 5 stars Chillin' With The Buddha.......2006-10-16

This is an interesting one, that is sort of outside my normal frame of reference. My girlfriend and I were in a "new-agey" store while on a road trip, and we were both sort of intrigued in the music that was playing, which turned out to be this album. I would consider this disc a combination of two genres of music which I am actually rather unfamiliar with-techno and world music. It actually comes together quite well; most of the selections on this compilation are somewhat obscure(to me, anyway) european trance or house DJs (again, I'm going to have to cite unfamiliarity with the current "hip" slang on this subject(*snicker*)which incorporate world music and chanting (in Arabic?) into undeniably modern drum beats and synth programming. There is also a fair amount of briefly-phrased but very melodic electric guitar reminiscent of Buckethead's "Electric Tears" or "Colma" albums...quite a soothing combination, although I could have done without one track, which is sung in French. Excellent music for just relaxing with friends or a glass of wine.

5 out of 5 stars Keep it up Gordon Brothers, your Buddha series is perfect!.......2006-03-09

I was so pleased to see this top compilation series continue with even more great selections. Helen Horlyck's atmospheric vocals and J. Gad of Enigma fame on their track Cape Porcupine, is a great way to introduce this excellent collection of mood music. TYA shares an exotic atmosphere on Why. One And Twain by Ginkgo Garden is spatial and measured as Mueller-Key adds a melodic story. Touche' by TAU adds an inspired French groove. Samah livens up the grouping with Kilada's Arabic/Afro beat & vocals. Bhajya Sahita by Hands Upon the Black Earth has gentle vocals by Renee Petry along with a light-hearted beat by Bobby Cochran. The Gordon Brothers added one of my favorite tracks of theirs, with a club-remix of Empowered, giving a North American contemporary beat; as well with Descent to the Lowerworld, where the brothers always take me on a rewarding venture into deep Shamanic landscapes. Mangoville by David Gordon brings a gentle and instrumental track, which lends a joyful, lazy summer-like feel. With Northern Lights by Stella Maris, this obviously multi-talented group demonstrates their special brand of mystery-pop in both their vocals and melodies. The entrancing American group, the Moontrane Conductors, brings a wide multiplicity of soothing sounds with their In for the Night. Jaya Lakshmi & Deva Priyo hook up to weave together a Sanskrit chant into a rhythmic sway with a contemporary reward in Hamana Nale. And last but not least, Abraham Schenk wields a way among the electric in Sky Walk, which graces the end of this entrancing and soothing album. All together, this album has provided me with many soothing hours of aural enjoyment, and served as easy background music, when I have entertained friends. Keep it up Gordon Brothers, your Buddha series is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars World Class Chill-out.......2006-03-06

Each Buddha-Lounge just keeps getting better. While I love them all, number four is by far my fav! It opens with a track from ACHILLEA which is the new project from Jens Gad, co-producer and guitarist from ENIGMA, then continues with fantastic tracks from many top European artists such as Tya, Stella Maris and gems from underground US beatmasters such as The Moontrane Conductors and Hands Upon Black Earth plus world artists such as renowned Egyptian vocalist Nassar Kilada. The level of quality on this set is among the highest out there. I love putting this on for late night rendezvous!

not sure what this volume 4 is trying to achieve, but me thinks that if you take all 4 volumes and actually pick through the songs you might salvage one decent record...ughhhhh listen at your own risk!

5 out of 5 stars An Eastern Odyssey.......2006-08-28

Let me start off by saying I'm a huge fan of DJ Cheb-i-Sabbah. I love his work, and I own his Indian triology (Sri Durga, Maha Maya & Krishna Lila) and La Kahena. Needless to say, I rushed out to buy this CD when I found out about it, and I wasn't disappointed. It is different from his other CDs in that it's more like a compilation, a collection of different tracks he picked out for this CD. For the most part, he lets the artists stand on their own merits, though he does remix a couple of tracks.

This CD is right up my alley, and if your a fan of DJ Cheb-i-Sabbah, Natacha Atlas, Asian Dub Foundation, Toires, Najma Akhtar and such, you'll probably enjoy it too. It's mostly Asian and Middle Eastern dance music, with a bit of Afro-pop thrown in for good measure. The beautiful vocals of Natacha Atlas and Najma Akhtar stand beside the Turkish hiphop of Makale, techno-sufi music from Gnawa Impulse and the mellow New Age sounds of Trilok Gurtu and Paul Horn. Asian Underground beats from Asian Dub Foundation sit comfortably next to the Maghrebi techno of Toires and Afro-pop from Sekouba Bamino and Sangoma, Suzan Hendricks and the Traditional Healers. And of course a couple tracks from the master himself, DJ Cheb-i-Sabbah. As others have said, its like taking an odyssey across India, the Middle East and Africa.

If your a fan of this sort of music, then this CD is well worth the buy. Over an hour of music, covering a variety of moods and tastes. Your bound to like at least some of the songs, and exploring new music is always a good thing. I often find myself including this CD in my iPod for long car trips because it just puts me in a good mood. If you appreciate this CD, then I suggest you check out Cheb-i-Sabbah's other works. His great triology (Sri Durga, Maha Maya and Krishna Lila) comprises subtle, organic remixes of classical Indian music, both Hinudstani and Carnatic. La Kahena (and the recently released remix album) focuses on his own Maghrebi roots in Algeria and Morroco, and stands out as one of the best CDs I've ever heard. Very impressive stuff, at least in my opinion. So do yourself a favor and check out this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Sabbah's Mosaic.......2005-02-20

A wondrously mind-expanding journey, this DJ mix. As the title suggests, As Far As isn't a proper Sabbah album - it's a compilation containing two of his own tracks, three of other people's songs that he remixed, and nine others added to the jambalaya. Covering nine languages and three continents, this is one fascinatingly eclectic experience. There's almost a geographical progression to the disc, as we go from India to central Asia to Egypt to Turkey, then down to South Africa and back to India at the close.

The variety is really the main strength and the main weakness of this disc. The overall range is much wider than on DJ Cheb's own albums, but in the process it inevitably loses some of the cohesion that he pulls off so well. Part of what makes his own work so special is his way of blending so many elements into a unified whole that goes beyond the individual traditions it touches on. Here, each piece is its own entity and they're all different.

Much of the disc is still world-beat-techno, if you need some kind of label (inadequate though it is), livened up with some fascinating detours. "Colour Line" is club-dance applied to a political statement. "Have We Lost Our Dream?" crosses beautiful atmospherics with some of the most passionate singing to be heard in the course of this hour-long trip. "Pour Matoub" is transcendental ambience as Sabbah's done it so well elsewhere. "Salla" is African hip-hop (the only one I really don't like); "Neti-Neti" has an almost free-jazz touch courtesy of Don Cherry's flavorful trumpet; "Sinikan" is based around a tribal chant with a sunny tropical bent. And so on, and so on, a new surprise around every corner.

Even though I don't think As Far As is quite as strong as Cheb's other offerings, it complements them extremely well. It's a different way of looking at the same larger picture.. and of course expanding vision & boundaries is what this music's about in the first place. Recommended, but preferably after you've discovered Shri Durga and Krishna Lila first.

    4 out of 5 stars Not a smooth mix.......2005-02-06

If your looking for an Asian flavoured Downtempo mix to keep everying groovin while in the background, this isn't it. There are a couple of tracks in the middle that veer into ambient. Don't get me wrong, these are quite nice but they break the groove up.

I'd still recomend this album as a great journey unto ito itself, but as one of 5 downtempo CD's in the changer, you'll find it sticks out.

I have all this guy's releases and I think he is doing some great work, I can't wait to see what he does next

    5 out of 5 stars Atmospheric & Eclectic.......2004-08-10

I really, really like this album.
DJ Cheb i Sabbah mixes these songs together with artistry, and his musical selection is inspired. It's not any kind of "typical" mix- the songs defy any really strict classification. You have Maghreb rap in French, a traditional Berber recording, and then techno beats and some crazy drum & bass tossed in for good measure... There's a sampling of music from every part of the western Muslim world. Some may feel this album is too eclectic or lacks focus. I say it reflects both the diversity and the complexity of the modern Muslim experience, and underlines the reality that this music comes from a region of cultures caught in a delicate balancing act between tradition and modernity. Very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly mixed and produced........2003-07-12

This album is excellent i listen to it every night before I fall asleep. The music is interesting and uplifting, and you can tell that extremem attention was payed to every detail in the music. There are no shocking changes that might be disturbing when you are meditating or sleeping with it on. The dynamics of the sound are very spiritual as well. Deep and inspiring. A musical journey.

2 out of 5 stars Lucid dreaming? .......2007-02-13

Oh, please! I guess it depends on your idea of dreaming.

If you enjoy dozing off with the electric blender on high, then you've gotta place this in your bedroom.

Seriously -- the musicianship is highly competent, and there is an obvious commitment to the entire production. But this CD is not dreamy.

The album title nails it: "Rhythmic FISSION -- digital revisions of classic trax."

    4 out of 5 stars A Dreamy Listening Experience.......2004-06-01

This music is ideal accompaniment for lucid dreaming...Some of the tracks are loud, fast, and flashy ("Chasing Bartok" track #1, "Machines" track #10 come to mind) while others are fragile and soothing ("Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito"). Any one of these songs would be a superb compliment to a movie soundtrack--they all have this movie-dream-type quality to them, whether the movie/dream is creepy, beautiful, sad, or just plain experimental electronic music. Tracks 12-14 are heavy on vocals: Track 12 is very similar to the enigma song "Beyond the Invisible", while "I would Kiss You" makes me think of Loreena McKennitt with a dash of techno-renaissance flair, and finally "New World" has its good moments, but sounds a bit Disney-esque. "Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito" are the best tracks on the whole album; they sound like the ideal Anne Rice movie soundtrack selections, with "Addio" serving for any goth-vampire-opera-or-nightclub scenes, and "Espirito" for any childhood flashback scenes (hey, that's just what it sounds like!)...

If you've heard the "Verve Remixed" CDs, then I highly recommend buying this CD as well to help balance out your jazz with some classical. Plus the music is brand-spankin' new. So give this CD a chance.
