Customer Reviews:
The CD Is Far From Trash.......2003-12-17
"White Trash Lullabies" is Spank The Monkey's 2nd cd. If I have to use only one word to sum up the cd, it'd be ROCKS! Straight out of Lafayette, LA, I've watched this band grow. They were awesome in the beginning and only get better and better. "White Trash Lullabies" is proof of their awesome talent, which has carried over to "3", the third cd, and you want it, too! Spank The Monkey is overall an awesome rock band, but they are diversified at the same time. "White Trash Lullabies" is proof of that and of how well they can put it all together. This cd is a must have cd. "Breathe" deserves a rock award! It has been heard world-wide. "One and Only One", written for a child is heart clinching. I could go on and on about the vast greatness of this cd. Add it to your collection.
AWESOME!!!!!!!.......2001-10-10
THIS CD IS GREAT FOR ANYONE WHO LOVES A**-POUNDING ROCK AND ROLL. "WHITE TRASH LULLABIES" HAS THE HIT REMAKE OF RICK SPRINGFIELDS "JESSIE'S GIRL". AND IN THE NEXT MONTH THEIR THIRD RELEASE "3" WILL BE AVAILABLE WITH ANOTHER DOSE OF A**-POUNDING ROCK AND ROLL. TO FURTHER CHECK THIS BAND OUT, LOG ON TO THEIR WEBSITE .... AND BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THEIR LIVE SHOWS, I PROMISE IT WONT BE ONE YOU'LL FORGET.

Customer Reviews:
Danielle Spencer's White Monkey, a great beginning.......2003-03-05
If "White Monkey" was a book it would be a fine Gothic English novel...haunting, dark, introspective, but always lightened by it's ethereal presentation. An impressive debut by Australian artist, Danielle Spencer. It will be interesting to see where her music goes from here.
Gorgeous!.......2002-11-24
Danielle Spencer, White Monkey (EMI Australia, 2001)
Danielle Spencer is Russell Crowe's on-again off-again girlfriend.
Okay, now that we've got that out of the way, one wonders if her longstanding relationship with Crowe (which goes back some twelve years, to the two of them filming a painfully bad indie film called The Crossing in 1990) has eclipsed, rather than enhanced, Spencer's long and obscure musical career. Over the past three years, she's jettisoned the bands she's been working with and set out to write her own material. White Monkey is the first full-length showcase of the results. And while it's an inconsistent piece of work, the first word that comes to mind is still "brilliant."
The album doesn't really seem sure of where it wants to go. It shifts gears time after time in tone and form and never really comes to rest anywhere. This isn't to say the low points are bad; they're just not spectacular. (Put all of the album's ballads into this category.) There's nothing in them you haven't heard before in many places, and they've gotten Spencer compared to such disparate artists as Madonna, Kate Bush, and Portishead. (I will hasten to add here that anything on this album stands well above Portishead's painful "Nobody Loves Me" or Madonna's... well, take your pick from among Madonna's more empty-headed songs, of which there are a myriad.) The gods must have been smiling on Spencer as she recorded this album, because the low points accentuate the high points. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but having a song like "White Monkey" in a sea of soft rock makes it that much more stunning. It's "White Monkey" and its companion pieces that make this album stand out. They're dark, brooding, nasty, with streaks of lyrical dada three feet wide running straight down the middle. Drum machines straight out of Tricky's best work, ethereal synthesizers, and jagged guitar lines. This is a woman who knows how to package depression for the masses. (She learned from the best; there's a Cure cover on the B-side of the "Blast Off" single.)
Just when we thought girlpop was dead, the last two years have seen a revival of the art in its purest form. Add Danielle Spencer to the list of keepers. *** ½
Fresh and fun CD.......2002-06-08
I bought this CD on a whim. Usually when I do this, I am very disappointed. Not this time!! Danielle's music has rhythm and pizzazz and she has a sure, sweet, fluid voice which is confident and mature. After being won over by the music, I read the lyrics and was even more delighted. My family will have to listen to me singing these songs for a long while. If you are in the U.S., it's worth the extra time (took about a month for me to receive it)and money. When's her next CD due???
Buy 3 and share with others!!!.......2002-05-10
After reading Danielle's biography on her official website, the way she described her music, her inspirations, I couldn't wait to get White Monkey! I feared I wouldn't like it, that I had built it up in my mind to be this fantastic album. All fears laid to rest after a few minutes of Blast Off. I loved it from the start, and still do.
Very impressive new artist.......2002-05-10
I was very impressed by this debut album by Danielle Spencer. Her voice is fantastic. She has a real gift for writing and arranging. The songs are all varied and the album is never boring. Her lyrics are very insightful, but are not obscure and overdone. The music is very good. Anyone that likes Sarah McLauchlin, Paula Cole, and Shawn Colvin will also like Danielle Spencer. I know she is often compared to Tori Amos, but I am not very familiar with Tori's music and cannot make that comparison.

well compacted,directly astonishing.......2001-08-06
you'd think with a provocative title as this that Schat would have sought to evoke the mysteries of the East, others have,as John Adams with 'Nixon in China',which by comparison is a bland corporatly formed alternative to Schat's more imaginative means. Schat allows his music to speak for itself, there are no pentatonic scales here or Eastern stringed instruments, simply an on-going marimba that is effectively utilized as accompaniment, also the disarming quality of the violin, with frequent solo spots, sometimes merely playing the four open strings. I never thought something that simple could be exciting. Schat also follows the modernist sense of erecting timbres around his characterizations here. So for instance when the Bone Demon sings, here the coloratura soprano, she is accompanied by flowing winds, very compact sound. That is Schat's musical language here, the barrest of means with plucked doublebass against then the same tones bowed by violoncellos, directly functional, but allowing the narrative to proceed, and giving the text punctuation. We have quite striking deliveries of text with stridently sounding tenor, Richard Zook, and countertenor Gary Boyce, very penetrating voices.Monique Krus as the Bone Demon also sings seamlessly. The musical accompaniment is also seamless, fantastic playing. This CD if you can find it,is accompanied by a 298 page booklet complete with images you can floow, images by Chao Hung-pen and Chien Hsiao-tai
great music, unique booklet.......1999-08-14
Peter Schat's 60 minute opera summerizes in musical form the eternal quest of man for a world better than the one he knows. The music is ephemeral, lasting and constantly doing away with certainties. The booklet is spectaculat, allowing the listener to follow the music picture by picture. The best in its genre.

Customer Reviews:
Not just Another wife of a hollywood star........2004-12-23
I think this CD is a very good Cd .I could careless that she is Russell Crowe's wife. She may not have the greatest voice but I really like her music. It is dark and interesting.
Surprised Skeptic.......2004-02-25
I was very skeptical about this album .. but I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived. I have had the CD for less than 24 hours and I have already listened to it straight through four times. Danielle Spencer has a very unique voice and she seems to know just how to "work it". She provides all of the vocals -- harmonies, chantings, spoken words -- and the blending of these elements is like ear candy. I am usually a big rock fan (Rolling Stones, Scorpions, Bon Jovi), but this music is very good in it's own way. The vocals are laid over some really good music and the lyrics are captivating. The songs are melodic without being sappy. The middle of the CD seems to present the best songs: "Forgive Me" is a beautiful ballad where Miss Spencer can showcase the strength of her voice. "Tickle Me" is my favorite tune -- multiple layers of vocals and harmonies along with good music and great lyrics. "Knocking" is one of her "spooky" songs -- eerie music and almost demonic sounding vocals. Very good tune. Will make you want to stay on her "good side"!
In general, I strongly recommend this CD. I think it could definitely appeal to listeners of all genres of music. Don't let the whole "Mrs. Russell Crowe" thing stop you. I am also a fan of TOFOG (although MRS. Crowe is definitely the vocalist in the family). :) (sorry Russell)
Disappointed.......2003-07-20
I was expecting more voice and more rythm. She's not a good singer.
Definitely worth buying!.......2003-04-19
I bought this album, along with TOFOG's OWOS, just to hear what Danielle sounds like. I'm glad I did! The music is different but in a good way - very creative - the songs stay in my head well after I've stopped listening to the CD. I love how she whispers or talks in some of the songs with her beautiful voice. This is a CD that I haven't stopped playing since I got it in the mail. Go Danielle! Can't wait to hear your next CD!
Danielle Spencer is Simply The Best! A++++++++++++++++++++.......2003-04-05
Danielle Spencer is a truly gifted musician. You have to respect a woman who has worked as hard as she to fulfill her musical dreams. The music is outstanding! her voice is incredible! This is a 5 star album all the way!
