Product Description
SEYMINHOL is a young band from the east of France that plays Eighties-like, sometimes even Seventies-like heavy-metal. The first album "Indian Spirit" confirms the talents of this dynamic and powerful-sounding band. With the incredible "Northern Recital" (2002), SEYMINHOL takes a step higher, as much for the inspiration as for the big production, as well as the flawless performance. Influences can now be found in RHAPSODY, the epic dimension can be associated with that of another band from the same Lorraine region, ELVARON, and it reaches the same success. The story of this concept-album takes the listener to the frosty lands of Scandinavia in the Middle Ages. A great effort made by the musicians to stick to the historical reality is noteworthy, by the way. The story goes on with the stunning "Septentrion's Walk" (2005). "Rising from the foams of the billows, the Vikings, making blood flow and taking their revenge, get ready to pour into the lands, like crashing! and devasting waves. CHARLEMAGNE stands as the only defence that is likely to break them: he embodies Faith, he is the ministry of God on Earth. But how long still ?"...
Seyminhol's "Septentrion's Walk" is the group's second full-length album (their very first was a 5 track mini-album called "Indian Spirit") and a continuation of the musical storybook that began with their previous effort "Northern Recital". Which spins the tale of the Christian Empire's rise to power in the ancient lands of Old Scandanavia, and the Viking legion's bloodthirsty attempts at taking revenge against it.
I will have to say, the album did not open as I expected. With all the short toilings I had read about SEYMINHOL, I was expecting RHAPSODY or something very similar from the outset.
But no! Instead we start off with a bit of a slower, mid-tempo song that actually works well in the lead position on the album. You don't truly realize this until you get a little further into the album, but SEYMINHOL are very meticulous about where they play fast on "Septentrion's Walk".
They can and do play up-tempo material, but these guys are locked in on telling a story, and whatever speed will define the mood of the portion they are telling through their instruments will correspond exactingly!
I must say, this is extremely exotic sounding stuff! So well thought out lyrically, so wonderfully executed. The thing I love is that you're not buried head-first in bombast from the first second. There's a build up to everything on this disc.
If you've seen my other reviews, you know I don't usually care for slower or mid-paced metal. But SEYMINHOL makes it all so interesting as they weave this 100% historically authentic account on "Septentrion's Walk", and when they do get going and let 'er rip...my God! These guys are so incredibly classy! All the songs, slow, fast and inbetween are rich, lavish slices of the finest symphonic power metal perfectly carved and served in just the right order. Everything is here; vibrant guitars, thunderous backbeats, inspired and emotional vocals, and all executed with impeccable interplay and oh that songwriting!
The sky is absolutely the limit for this French group. Some might argue that we have heard all of this before, but not like this! This is lushous power metal from start to finish!
The band even released this as a superbly packaged double disc set in a high gloss digipak. The second CD features a few extra songs, a video and some multimedia stuff like screensavers and such.
So much here and so worth the Amazon price tag! If you want to save some dough and still get this new (finding it used would be very tough), I scored it from a vendor in Sweden for $15 and I know one in Utah who can get it for the same price ($15)!
BUY THIS CD IMMEDIATELY! If you're into power metal, you'll throw your friends for a loop or two when they hear this one! Insanely good symphonic power metal album!!
