A vast audience received its first exposure to the music of György Ligeti through Stanley Kubrick's use of his haunting "Lux Aeterna" (despite the composer's lack of consent) in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. This collection--part of Sony's invaluable Ligeti edition--places "Lux aeterna" in the context of Ligeti's other a cappella choral works, which together provide an overview of the evolving phases of one of the 20th century's most intriguing composers. In his booklet notes to the disc, Ligeti recalls the influence of Bartók and Kodály on his early folkloric compositions, from arrangements of traditional material to free, polyrhythmically inflected inventions on Hungarian folk texts, a format that allowed him some degree of experimental freedom from the strictures of "socialist realism" before he fled the Hungarian Communist regime. The breakthrough "Lux aeterna" is a classic example of Ligeti's trademark technique of "micropolyphony," enveloping the listener in mesmerizingly dense textures of cloudlike harmonies. From Ligeti's late period comes a triptych of "Hölderlin Phantasies." Their 16-voice polyphony transcends the simplistic distinction between tonality and atonality to explore "new kinds of half diatonic, half chromatic harmonies." The resulting sound world of fragmentary, dislocated epiphanies mirrors the unfathomable richness of the great visionary poet to uncanny effect. This 'A Cappella Choral Works', the second volume in a collection of Gyorgy Ligeti compositions contains one of the pieces of music which contributed to making '2001, A Space Odyessy' such a profoundly interesting film. This piece, 'Lux aeterna' which is the textbook example of 'SciFi' music, is very different from many of the other pieces on this recording. In fact, one is really impressed by the wide variety of styles, where you have some peasant songs which sound a lot like sea chantys and other pieces which are definitely liturgical. One can certainly thank Stanley Kubrick for bringing Ligeti to our attention.

Not even good for background music/noise as the voices get really loud in certain parts and almost silent.
I bought this CD and am returning it. It's just more & more of the sameness throughout the whole CD.
I realize that Ligeti is avant garde but I heard that if you like Gregorian chant (which I do) this CD is similar. I don't think it is. It's very disquieting and full of tension (great, if that's the mood you're looking for).
a handful of great Ligeti works........2004-09-06
As a compilation, musically speaking, Edition 2 is probably my least favorite of the Sony Ligeti Edition collection. Many of the pieces come from traditional Hungarian sources, conceived while Ligeti was still in his early years. They are pretty, but also pretty straightforward and conventional, and other than their simple pleasantness and occasionally yummy dissonances, they aren't really mindblowing like the best Ligeti. They are often very beautiful though. However, Edition 2 DOES feature one of the most harrowing, apocalyptic compositions of 20th century Western music, _Lux aeterna_. The profound tension in the quiet web of micropolyphonic voices is just devastating. Also great are the other later pieces, _Drei Phantasien nach Friedrich Holderlin_, three wild polyphony pieces from German literature, and _Magyar Etudok_, three very complex Hungarian etudes for 16 voices. Those pieces are all outstanding but honestly I think everything I've heard by Ligeti is worth hearing. Check out Ligeti edition 4 for more vocal works, some of which are the best of Ligeti's works.

This cd is beautiful to listen to.From Ejszaka to Kallai Ketto
is brilliant. Ligeti choral works is the first cd have got choral music on it and i love it.Now im going to get the other two cds in the ligeti edition.

Exquisite use of the voice.......2002-07-11
Bringing Ligeti's works to a wider public was one of the great services Stanley Kubrick performed for the world when Lux aeterna was included in the soundtrack for 2001: a Space Odyssey.
This album is a collection of a cappella choral works and which highlights Ligeti's great talent and skill in the use of the voice as a musical instrument. He, together with Yoko Ono, have excelled in this field though from different, sometimes conflicting directions.
When I listen to this I revel in it's glory. The sounds are ethereal and atmospheric, ghostly and angelic in a way that no-one but the composer can make them sound. I never want those sounds to end and in a way it is like having a sort of dependence.
I could go on and on and on about this but I had better stop. This is one essentila component of anyone's classical music collection yet it really defies categorisation. This is timeless, awesome music, not just for a generation but for a world. Lest Zeus strike me with a thunderbolt, these voices are sweeter and more angelic than the voices of the angels themselves.
Exquiiste. Words are insufficient to describe such beauty.

Like that of many artists who came of age in the '80s, Stan Ridgway's career has often been unfairly haunted by an endless groove of MTV overexposure that's turned perceptions of his music into something akin to a skipping record. Indeed, the veteran L.A. singer-songwriter once groused he'd likely spend his twilight years onstage in a newly liberated Havana casino lounge, crooning "Mexican Radio" to blue-haired former new wavettes. But this savory trove of songs ranks with Black Diamond as one of the best albums Ridgway has recorded since his muscular reemergence as an indie artist in the mid-'90s. Mining the same electro-acoustic vein as Anatomy, Ridgway has refined his nervous balance of traditional folk-blues and ironic-modernist instincts even further here, shrewdly casting the material in a three-act dramatic structure that sharpens its dramatic focus. The usual suspects of Stan's compelling musique noir herein feature seedy, if oddly sympathetic miscreants (the wry toe-tapper "Wake Up Sally [The Cops Are Here]," "Running with the Carnival"), a familiar musician all too wise to both his past and future ("That Big 5-O," "Talkin' Wall of Voodoo Blues"), and a blue-collar warehouse worker moving mysterious cargo Middle Eastward (the dour "Afghan Forklift"). His balladeer instincts may draw him to personal interludes both bittersweet ("Our Manhattan Moment") and elegiac ("Into the Sun," "My Rose Marie"), but it's when Ridgway fuses his Johnny Cash/Ernie Ford/Mose Allison fetishes with his own compelling personal ethos (the haunting, harmonica-seasoned "God Sleeps in a Caboose," a headline-timely, appropriately creeped-out cover of Allison's "Monsters of the Id") that Ridgway again confirms his status as one of America's most consistently original songwriters and performers. --Jerry McCulley

Ex-Wall of Voodoo leadman turned Singer-Songwriter extraordinare Stan Ridgway ROCKED McCabe's Guitar Shop with his blend of alt. roots-rock music and more on Sunday, May 6th, 2007. It was by far to me the most 'electric' performance at McCabe's and his 'band' was simply electrifying as well. His guitarist was wired, so was his pianist-organist and violinist.. well, let's add the drummer as well (Five folks on the small McCabes' stage was a sight to see) Being my first time to a Ridgway concert, I was pleasantly surprised at his twisted humor in between sets (then again, many of his songs are that way as well) It made me at times go to the point of laughing so loud I would had to leave. His music from 'Snakebite' was as wild as the music and wicked bantor on stage - He played "Wake Up Sally (The Cops are here)" and I was laughing to the point of tears (he made strange facial movements on stage while performing) "King For A Day" Was his tribute to the non-sense we call the local modern-day televised car chase (a wild wide in a stolen car that ends up on local TV with the car smashing into the side of a house (Sounds familiar??) and "Running With The Carnival" (Those sound effects are still ringing in my ears) - I have to say the 90 minutes went VERY quick and before we knew, he was back for the encore...He did "Beneath The Green Tree" to make some 'stiff point' - The hightlight for me was when he did that song from 25 years ago that we all know all too well from his 'Wall of Voodoo' days "Mexican Radio" - The house went down at the end of the song with Stan raising his guitar screaming "25 years - I'm branded - damn this song --- I'm branded" (A clue here, folks??) Most folks out there know Stan just for that song, I can see why he feels a bit differently - For true music lovers we love Stan for his quality SOLO stuff that stand out. For those who just have 'Wall of Voodoo's greatest hits' and are reading this, please get this album and do yourself a favor. Overall, one of the best concerts I've EVER experienced at McCabe's and I got very lucky & met Stan after the concert (with Sharpie in hand) and..he was just as funny after the show (I guess that's his personality - that's cool..he's kinda like me) I also spoke to his guitarist Mike as well for a bit before Stan came down. I will most certainly see him when he comes back - you should too. It's a concert you won't forget =.) Peace - Joe "Bear"

and this collection shows just what an inventive, brilliant, writer he is.
That said, a lot of the songs on this album bump into his limitations as a vocalist. While his lyrics and musical puns make me laugh, some of his vocalizations make me wince.
A quirky masterpiece.......2005-10-07
Stan Ridway's music almost defies description. Using a variety of instruments (including a glockenspiel, mellotron and a 2-string jawbone!)Ridgway and his group of players has created a wonderful bit of Americana. Tales of escaping criminals bedeviled by cops and a noisy dog, a crack smoking daddy on a rampage, and life in a carnival are given inventive musical settings that really have no equivalent. If you want to know what happened to Wall of Voodoo from Ridgway's perspective, "Talkin' Wall of Voodoo Blues Part I" gives you an interesting take on the situation and you follow that with "My Rose Marie" that sounds so authentic you'd swear it was Civil War balled as opposed to a Ridgway original. I've always liked Ridgway's solo stuff, but I feel this one is where all his strengths as an artist come together.

Listening to this record is a bit frustrating for me. Some of it calls to mind the best of Stan's past work, namely his albums Partyball and Anatomy. Yes, there are some fugitive songs here. Stan gravitates toward the dark underbelly of society for his subject matter. Yet, somehow this batch of miscreants seems a little more conventional, a little more sane than his usual cast of characters. Sadly, that makes them less interesting.
Into The Sun is a fine start -- about new beginnings. The music, the soaring synths and yearning in Stan's voice, delivers the goods. Other examples of atmospheric production that does justice to the songs: Monsters Of The Id, Our Manhattan Moment, maybe even Hollywood Ending.
But the carnival atmosphere of Running With The Carnival is a bit too predictable.
Talkin Wall Of Voodoo Blues is a chance for Stan to get some things off his chest about the old band, and how they all got screwed by the record business. The song itself is a bit monotonous, and lyrically not clever at all. "We made a lot of noise/For all the girls and boys/It was 1977/Now two are gone to heaven." Ahhhh, you get the picture. A lot of the rhymes on this record are a little forced, and often the words don't quite flow smoothly with the melody.
Wake Up Sally -- too sing song-y.
My Rose Marie is unusually sentimental for Stan Ridgway -- about a veteran who still pines for the gal he left behind when he went to war many years past. I thought the vocals on this song sounded a little too strained. A lighter touch was needed -- something like Stan's vocals on Partyball's Right Through You. And the synthesized orchestrations gave only a suggestion of the grandeur this song could have with acoustic instruments.
With tweaking of the lyrics, a bit of restraint on some of the cheap-sounding keyboards, more work on vocal phrasing and tone, sophisticated programming on the rhythm tracks, and you'd have a record that's a more complete artistic statement and less a glorified demo tape. That is how most of these songs strike me -- just shy of what's needed.
Other fans have obviously been wowed by the performaces on Snakebite. Perhaps they focused on some quality that I missed. I hear a lot of potential, but I can't quite give this record a passing grade. Songs: Need editing. Arrangements: Too simple. Sound: Production a bit primitive -- expand and enhance. I won't beat this to death. Amazon.com is offering a free download of Talkin Wall Of Voodo Blues. Get it. Compare it to with anything on Partyball, and you'll see what I'm complaining about.
Stan's Excellent Experimentation .......2005-06-04
Since the first analog rhythm machines combined with the frenetic wall of voodoo to this latest excellent wonderbug Blacktop Ballads and Fugitive songs Stan is always experimenting in creating wonderful songs that are rich with literary and artistic tradition while at the same time warm and human.
If Stan Ridgway was not a songwriter he'd be a poet laureate, or great American novelist. His work is always narrative, but like a roadtrip, you never know where the story will take you.
In this release Stan seems to spread himself out geographically. This latest release takes in the Americana.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Third and fourth LPs continue Haggard's streak.......2006-05-02
Capitol's deluxe series of Haggard 2-fer reissues takes its second step with Haggard's third ("I'm a Lonesome Fugitive") and fourth ("Branded Man") solo albums, both from 1967. This pair of releases continues to mix the electric twang of Bakersfield with the emotional directness of Johnny Cash, but with songwriting that's both increasingly personal and sophisticated. The doggedness Haggard displays in the face of romantic and personal dissolution adds metaphorical echoes to its autobiographical detail, resulting in songs that connect on first spin and reveal their layers over time.
"I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" was recorded with Haggard's band in transition. Guitarist Roy Nichols had left, and was replaced for these sessions by studio hotshots James Burton and Glen Campbell. Surprisingly, the loss of Nichols' signature licks isn't all that noticeable. Liz Anderson's title track (and Haggard's first #1 single) is the perfect opener, parlaying a fugitive's rootlessness into a metaphor for Haggard's continual run from romantic turmoil. Haggard's a drowning man, and whether it's the nostalgia of "My House of Memories," the loneliness of "Life in Prison," or the bottle of "Drink Up and Be Somebody," he's always struggling to keep from going under.
Haggard's debt to Bakersfield is heard in the Don Rich-styled harmony (provided by Glen Campbell) on "Mixed Up Mess of a Heart," and his favor for Jimmie Rodgers made its first appearance here with "My Rough and Rowdy Ways." Bonus tracks include a tougher pre-Capitol version of "Life in Prison" (recorded for Tally, but unreleased at the time), and a more straight-forward take of "Someone Told My Story" culled from discarded 1966 album sessions.
"Branded Man" continued Haggard's roll. With Roy Nichols returned to the fold, the title track complements "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" by showing that the parolee wears a scarlet mark as damning as the stripes of the escapee. Haggard offers several new originals, including the signature "I Threw Away the Rose," but he also takes on co-writers (Bakersfield legend Red Simpson for "You Don't Have Far to Go," and Bonnie Owens for "Gone Crazy"), and picks up songs from others, including a trio of tunes from Tommy Collins.
Collins' "Don't Get Married" is more hopeful in its longing than Haggard's typical songs of incarceration, and "I Made the Prison Band" actually feels pragmatic and light. Mexicali-styled guitars add a dramatic flair to several tunes, including the prisoner's romantic lament, "My Hands Are Tied." The album's most recognizable cover, the funereal classic "Long Black Limousine," is fine, but surprisingly underwhelming in contrast to Haggard's originals. Extras include early takes of "I Threw Away the Rose" and "Loneliness is Eating Me Alive," each of which lack the delicacy of the final album takes.
"Lonesome Fugitive" is the slightly more satisfying spin, but the beauty of Capitol's reissue series is that you don't have to choose. These two-fers include both original album covers (one on each side of the booklet), color photo reproductions, and newly struck liner notes. Though Haggard fans are likely to have a lot of this material on previous single-CD reissues or box sets, the logical album pairings and remastered 24-bit sound make these sets especially attractive. The only real nits one could pick is the absence of session credits, master numbering and chart positioning, as well as a lack of detail on some of the bonus tracks. Mixed for radio play, this is a very stylized debut with a lot going on for it, though little seems to cohere. This Seattle-based trio has the Das Damen problem: They have good ideas, they're just too young to make them work yet; meanwhile they're not dumb enough (or sure enough in their abilities) to just sit down and write straightforward pop songs. "Redcoats" underlines the basic struggle of this band: the strident, Fugazi-ish vocal delivery in the song's verses doesn't jibe with the herky-jerky, Gang of Four-ten-times-removed rhythms. The song's chorus, meanwhile, is pure pop-punk genius. One hopes that with time, they'll be able to deliver more than There Will Be Blood Tonight's mostly-pleasant, though often haphazard, collage of emo, punk rock, and New Wave clichés. --Mike McGonigal

I've seen The Divorce several times (8 times to be exact)and these boys know how to entertain an audience. Their sound is a far cry from what the Seattle music scene was labeled as, grunge. The anthemic chorus line of Breaker Breaker makes me want to raise my fist in the air. One of my favorite tracks on the album is Samoa's Revenge, a hard rock guitar driven madness backed up by bassist Jimmy Kurran's infectious screaming. This debut album is a non-stop headbopping machine and I highly recommend it.

I got this CD from my sister for christmas. I was skeptical at first, but then after i listenend to it for a while i fell in love. The bands music really sticks with you. Its an awesome CD to listen to when you wanna rock out, but its not super hardcore headbanger stuff. I love it, especially the lyrics because they are so rightous and original.

I just saw them live last night while they were opening for Vendetta Red and My God they were amazing. I had only heard of them when I saw them and I had never heard one of their songs. Perhaps that's why I have such a huge appreciation for them. They sound 10x better live, but they're great. Redcoats is by far my favorite, but they're all amazing. They're just fun and energetic in both their music and their live performance. A great album.

This is an AMAZING CD...after listening to it a couple of times it gets better and better and you always want to hear it playing. I have seen them live-they are a great band to watch. Save it For the Judge is my favorite song, but it's hard to pick a second one because they are all good. This is one of the few CDs I listen to without skiping over a song or two.

The previous review is simply a gross falsification. I have been an obsessed opera fan for a long time, and Thomas Hampson is a truly special singer. He is not the possesor of the largest or most interesting voice, which he will tell you and indeed says so all the time. His commitment to text, his willingness to search out parts to fit his voice, and his dedication to art song make im invaluable to Americans as a ture Troubador. His light Baritone was ideally suited to Figaro and to Valentin and the art song he loves. He must stretch to sing Verdi, where his voice sounds dry and small but many singers have chanced Verdi at their peril, and his innate ablity to inhabit a song, here evidenced in Di Provenza overcomes fact that it is out of his fach. You misinformed opinion of Hampson is mean and strangly bitter. I love Opera, but I do not love every singer, which doesn't mean I debase their very artistic existance. I have seen Hampson live, and have loved him (in Thias) and somewhat disliked him (in Simon Boccanegra) As for him being pretentious, somwetimes I find him mannered, but always charming. SOmetimes Intellectualism can appear pretentious, but surely you wont hold an opera singer to the charge that he must be unintellectual. what a vitriolic review, please buy this Cd, it merits repeated listening to a true American SINGER,

The title of this album is an oxymoron. Or a sick joke. I can't decide. Sure he has made millions by luring the uninitiated listener into his web of deceit and conceit, but don't be fooled any longer. How fortunate Hampson has been to sing for and with great artists to shoulder his heavy load.
An Homage to a Great Artist.......2005-10-30
EMI is wisely creating a series of recordings to gather the moments of artists that showcase the very reasons they become so highly regarded. Usually these collections are produced late in careers or even posthumously, but in the case of THE VERY BEST OF THOMAS HAMPSON the artist is still one of the more active and premiere singers of our day. Yet while he doesn't still perform all of these inclusions, it is wonderful to have excerpts from various successful recordings to remind us of the artistry that Hampson represents.
The two disc set includes arias from operas: Rossini's 'Il barbière di Siviglia', von Weber's 'Euryanthe', Gounod's 'Faust', Massenet's 'Hérodiade', Bizet's 'Les Pêcheurs de perles' (in duet with Placido Domingo), Thomas' 'Hamlet', Verdi's 'Don Carlo', 'Il Travatore', 'Macbeth', 'La Traviata', and 'Falstaff', Korngold's 'Die Tote Stadt', and Wagner's 'Tannhäuser'.
But the rewards of a Hampson recording must include his impeccable career as a lieder stylist and on this recording are excerpts from Schumann's 'Dichterliebe', Schubert's 'Winterreise', Mahler's 'Rückert Lieder' and 'Das Lied von der Erde', as well as songs by Meyerbeer, Rossini, Grieg, Kalman, and Lehar. And very importantly there are examples of American songs that Hampson has always emphasized in his recitals. Works by Stephen Foster, and two extraordinary works with the brilliant accompanist Armen Guzelimian - 'An Old Song Re-sung' by Griffes and 'At Dawning' by Charles Wakefield Cadman - round out this fine survey.
Not usually a collector of such 'recombinations', for this listener this album is so very fine that it deserves the attention of all those who appreciate the artistry of Thomas Hampson - then and now. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05
superb vocals.......2005-08-07
Mr.Hampson really gets the chance to showcase his wonderful baritone voice in this "Best of" collection which includes excellent selections from his various other CDs. I like the diversity of the selections featuring operatic arias,works from classical composers, and folk songs. For Thomas hampson fans, as well as fans of the baritone voice, this CD is for them.

I believe this is the best of Tony Banks' solo albums. If you are a fan of 80s Genesis, you'll enjoy Banks' pop-infused efforts. He sings lead on all the songs, something I wish he would have done more often over the years. All in all, an excellent effort.

I want to start by saying that I consider all of the proper albums that Genesis put out in the 1980s to be incredible masterpieces, and the same goes for Phil Collins' solo career.
That said, certain folks will tell you that Genesis and Phil's solo career became interchangeable in the '80s. To put it more precisely, certain people will tell you that Phil took over Genesis in the '80s and that his bandmates Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford were just along for the ride and cashing in. This is an incredibly unfair statement.
Tony Banks is a genius. His level of importance to Genesis is incalculable. He's brilliant with keyboard textures, and he's a brilliant composer, and his 1983 solo album "The Fugitive" amply demonstates both of these points. Tony handles all the vocals here, and he additionally proves himself to be a unique and expressive vocalist.
If you're looking for hardcore progressive rock, you're not going to find an abundance of it on this album. On the other hand, it's an exaggeration to say this is a pure pop-rock album. The result falls somewhere in between, offering up some sophisticated pop-rock material along the lines of '80s Genesis, plus some intriguing departures from that sound. With Collins not around, Banks wisely enlisted a slew of excellent drummers to help out, including Steve Gadd, to give some real muscle to the more rocking material. Also, Genesis tour guitarist and long-time Phil Collins guitarist Daryl Stuermer handles all the guitarwork on here.
It's totally obvious that Tony wasn't merely 'passing time' between Genesis albums when recording "The Fugitive"--he wrote every track on the album himself, and he had a wealth of brilliant songs up his sleeve. "This Is Love" is an incredibly catchy reggae-fied pop-rocker with a kickass, extended middle section. Banks also rocks out on the riffy "At The Edge Of Night". The mysterious-sounding "Man Of Spells" is an irresistibly melodic, low-key tune. "And The Wheels Keep Turning" is a brilliantly melodic and haunting song with brilliant lyrics about a lover who loses interest. "Say You'll Never Leave Me" is a gentle ballad with that trademark autumnal Banks feel, plus some pretty strange lyrics. The charming, wonderfully catchy "By You" is a stately, drum machine-based tune that, in retrospect, sounds surprisingly reminiscent of Enya.
There are also a pair of really engaging instrumentals. "Thirty Three's is a really moody piece with a brief musical quoting of Genesis' "Undertow". "Charm" is rather amusing, starting off with sounds the recall the early days of video games, and it's got really catchy hooks too, although it is a little gimmicky and drags a bit toward the middle after the real drums come in.
The main album portion ends with "Moving Under", which has a nicely catchy chorus and something of an Al Stewart-ish vibe to it, but overall it's surprisingly generic, with disappointingly uncatchy verses. Likewise, the two additional songs featured on this CD release are dishearteningly generic pop songs, especially for someone of Banks caliber--it's easy to see why they were left off the original vinyl release of the album.
Overall though, if you come to this album craving more great music from this genius of Genesis, you're in for a big time treat. "The Fugitive" is a must for any serious listener.
NOT Tony Banks best solo work, but still works.......2005-09-30
The fugitive is definitely more like an experiment than anything else. A short song, strictly pop album experience. When it came out in '83 it must have shocked fans, because it was a complete departiture form his first solo album, the brilliant "A Curious Feeling". I was quite shocked myself when I first heard it. I thought it sounded awful then. But after a few listenings you end up finding yourself changing your mind. As anything Banks did solo, I must say. The Fugitive has some nice songs and grows on you every time your hear it. I still think he made better works afterwards, specially the wonderful Stricly Inc CD, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, this is the only CD Tony Banks sings all the songs (He handles the vocals very well most of the time, even if his voice has lots of effects, just like Mike rutherford in his one shot singing solo project Acting Very Strange). Different yes, but still worth the price you pay.
Great Team Player.... Not-So-Great Solo Artist.......2005-07-30
Tony Banks is the most important member of Genesis - but not the only member. It's almost as if he needs Collins and Rutherford to keep his ideas in line. Banks lacks good musical judgement: the melodies and song construction are there - but the arrangements, cheesey keyboard sounds, and poor musical choices make this album close to unlistenable. That being said, it's still nice that Banks did the lead vocals on this CD - he should have sung all his own material... Great team player, not-so-great solo artist. If you're interested in Banks solo efforts, A Curious Feeling and Bankstatement are better choices.
Tony's Solo Masterpiece.......2005-01-01
If you had to name the most important member or ex-member of Genesis, and I mean THE most important guy who contributed to Genesis throughout their history, who would it be? In my honest opinion, it would be keyboardist Tony Banks. Of course Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett, Anthony Phillips & everyone else in the group at any one time has brilliantly contributed to the band---that goes without saying. But it is Tony's magical keyboard work that has always been at the very heart of Genesis' unique, distinctive sound. You take Tony's keyboards out of Genesis, and it isn't Genesis anymore. So Tony IS the band's key member. And yet, when all the current guys in Genesis split off to do solo projects, it is Tony who has the least success, which simply boggles my mind, considering all the wonderful solo music he has made since 1979's "A Curious Feeling." Tony's second stab at his solo career, 1983's "The Fugitive," just so happens to be his solo masterpiece. "The Fugitive" is a magnificent album, filled with irresistable music, brilliant keyboard work throughout by Banks, and, quite surprisingly, some excellent John Lennon-ish lead vocals from Banks ("The Fugitive" remains his only solo album where he sings all of the songs himself). Also lending Banks a hand is longtime Genesis touring guitarist Daryl Steurmer, and veteran session men like bassist Mo Foster, and drummers Tony Beard, Steve Gadd and Andy Duncan, whipping up an album that has all of Tony's keyboard trademarks, and yet is very accessible. The first single, "This Is Love," is a great pop-rocker. Other favorites include the mystical "Man Of Spells," the wonderfully catchy "And The Wheels Keep Turning," the bouncing, upbeat "By You," and the beautiful ballad "Say You'll Never Leave Me." Banks also does an outstanding job with the album's pair of instrumentals, the spooky, hypnotic "Thirty Three's" and the absolutely charming piece called, appropriately enough, "Charm." I hope that more Genesis fans out there will check out Tony Banks' solo music, as it's just as incredible as anything he recorded with the band, and "The Fugitive," Tony's best solo work to date, is a brilliant place to start.

A very special singer. I second the other reviewers' comments, and add that I have been singing along, as best I can, all morning, to this wonderful CD. An exceptional Largo, by the way, even given the aria's warhorse status.

This album is an absolute prize. Merrill, to me, was the finest of the American Baritone crop, possessing a rich timbre that is unmatched by todays standards. This CD finds Merrill offering some of his best and most famous renditions, some of which have been regrettably out of print for decades. That being said, this issue is an extremely welcome one indeed. One standout is the rare "Zazà, piccola zingara" from the seldom performed opera Zaza, by Pagliacci composer Ruggiero Leoncavallo. This aria, in this reviewer's opinion, uses that rich sonorous Merrill sound to its best advantage. Merrill once stated in a Met broadcast interview that this one recording (Zaza) was his all time favorite and the best recording of his voice. Other standout arias are, of course, "Largo al Factotum", "O vin dissipe la tristesse" from Hamlet, and the ethereal sounding "Vision Fugitive" from Herodiade. The non-operatice fare that stands out are "The Blind Ploughman" (what a truly heartfelt this performance is), "Drink to Me only with Thine Eyes", and the three spirituals. The recording quality is good overall and acceptable in places. Merrill was truly a great Baritone and this recording is a must for anybody's collection.

Excellent performances.......1999-12-13
Robert Merrill has for too long been written off as a bad actor with a good voice. What he really was was a bad actor with an EXCEPTIONALLY good voice, and these arias and songs prove it. And not only do these selections show off his wonderful, rich baritone, they also include some great songs and arias which aren't usually recorded. In particular, the "Invictus" of Bruno Huhn, the Toreador Song from Carmen, and the three spirituals are all either unknown or under-recorded, and all receive their due on this album. And, of course, Merrill's signature aria, "Largo al factotum," is wonderful. The only problem I have is with the sound quality of the album, but even that isn't as bad as it could be, and becomes less noticeable after listening to a couple tracks.

Dark, Rich and Brilliant.......2007-05-20
Right on top of my list, this CD is an amazing leap in the world of action scores. Insteading of pounding percussion, shreiking brass, trembling strings and whirling woodwinds, (which serve there purpose wonderfuly in the right hands) we are treated to a deep, thoughtful masterpiece. James Newton Howard's "The Fugitive" expertly blends elements of horror, drama, action and emotion in a package one can only describe as completely and utterly unique and original.
Great Soundtrack.......2005-10-24
I bought this cd immediately after seeing the movie, many many years ago, and I still love listening to it today.
It is distinctive, interesting, and quietly engrossing. Great background music for reading or doing homework.
A small complaint--i think they omitted one of the better tracks from the movie, heard while the prisoner bus is driving down the highway. Oh well, everything else is great.
Good CD for the genre.......2002-05-21
This CD mostly evokes the excitement of the movie. While there are a few songs that aren't memorable, most of them are up-tempo songs that really capture the spirit of the movie.
Really good CD to put in and get energy from to get moving for your day.

Even for someone who wasn't yet alive at the time of the original TV series, "The Fugitive" has still left a powerful impact on me. It's one of my all-time faves. It's so powerful that right after I saw it, I had to order it at my nearest music store---only to have to go through weeks of waiting due to a computer glitch on the supplier's end! So when I was finally able to buy this one, it was well worth the wait.
After listening to the soundtrack in the movie several times, I can tell you that, like Mark Isham's "The Net", "The Fugitive" soundtrack contains only the main themes rather than the entire score (at least two of them are heard twice) with a bonus track: a jazzy, low-down version of the music we hear at the end of the entire chase featuring Wayne Shorter, solo sax. Quite a few of the tracks sound like medlies that unless you see the movie, you won't know where they're going. Speaking of Shorter, this was the first movie soundtrack in which I ever heard a saxophone used so brilliantly to convey such drama in a movie.
James Newton Howard did a terrific job over all; this soundtrack really does "sound" like Harrison Ford! I highly recommend it.
One of the Seminal Scores of the 90's.......2000-12-23
This CD is in many ways the finest action score of the decade. "The Fugitive" deftly weaves together several compelling and memeorable themes against backdrops of breathtakingly thrilling and surprisingly quiet incidental music. All of the music, action and otherwise, is quite varied and intense-each track stands apart very well, from the rest. The "Theme" track, though not heard in the film, is a very nice aside with a beautiful statement of both halves of the primary theme by soprano sax and piano. The music is also surprisingly original; the sax is a bit eccentric, as are some of the subtle electronic effects, which adds some distinctiveness to a great score. And when it finally ends, one feels an almost visceral sense of relief after the tension. The CD is about 40 minutes long, which includes the essential music from the film.
In contrast to a review below, which said this music is not "pleasant..."(though some of it is) that's the nature of the beast with action soundtracks. They are not supposed to be quiet and demure all the way through.

This CD is a thoughtful reflection on the peculiarities of life and love. The lyrics are witty and easy to relate to, and the melodies are fun. Amy Rigby is my nine year old daughter's new favorite performer - Rigby sings about topics at the center of all of our lives.

...Amy Rigby just keeps getting better. I thought she had really hit one out of the park, topping her usual already high standards, with "Till the Wheels Fall Off", but this one is, amazingly, even better...You'll laugh, you'll cry. Nobody does this kind of tragicomic poignancy better, with the exception of Loudon Wainwright III.
Also, if you get the chance to see her live, don't pass it up. She puts on an incredibly rockin', generous and rambling show...
And, if all the above isn't enough to sell you, remember: the woman danced with Joey Ramone!

Her best writ since marriage, despair and growing up made her debut a masterpiece a decade ago, and her coolest vocal as well, diary number 5 tackles ex-husbands, ex-wives of new husbands, needy men, dreams of Joey Ramone, all while feeling an infinity with Rasputin. If only Oprah understood the complexities of real womanhood. A songwriter nonpareil, with only Lucinda as a peer. Sheryl Crow could learn a few [dozen] lessons. Why isn't this woman a star with 8 Grammy's and 10 million in the bank? Oh, yeah...the better for her lovers, like me. My grade: A
she got back up again.......2005-09-08
I didn't think she could top her last album but she did. INCREDIBLE. "Rasputin" is the kind of song Lou Reed should be writing. And it gets better and better from there...one killer track after another. This is her most powerful album yet. Every song is right in your face. It's fun, yet serious. Hooks galore. Great production. Super-tight band. Complete success.

For nearly a decade, this divorced, middle aged New York mom has been turning out pop-wise confessionals with the consistancy and charm of a Nashville Pro - most notably on her 1996 debut "Dairy Of A Mod Housewife". On her fifth album she makes pretty, witty out of brutal honesty and some apparently deserved bitterness. Wether comparing herself to Rasputin or dreaming of quality time with Joey Ramone, her biting humor and often bouyant melodies ensure that "Little Fugitive" never gets mopey or precious.

On the first track of singer/songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album, the one-time "mod housewife" wittily compares herself to czarist Russia's most infamous and rakish character. Odd entrance? Seemingly so, but the sly humor and infectious melody of "Like Rasputin" demands repeat spins. The rest of the 12-song package is equally rewarding, whether Rigby is questioning why her new husband's ex-wife has become a friend ("The Trouble With Jeanie"), dreaming of punk dancing with Joey Ramone or brilliantly tapping into the psychedelic sonics of "Revolver"-era Beatles ("So You Know Now").
