It's those Japanese girls from Cibo Matto being postmodern and surprisingly likable. They don't mention what happened to Butters 01 to 07, but somehow it doesn't matter. There's hip-hop and rap (hey, this is on Grand Royal, after all), some tasty rock & roll guitar, traces of disco, a little bit of funk, and lots of trashy '70s influences, all whipped up to make something pretty damned exciting. Of course, it's all a little bit arty and self-conscious, but you didn't expect to get out of here scot-free, did you? What we've got here, though, is a record that truly defies insidious pigeonholing (for once the hype is really true), and is an joy to listen to. In these listless days, the simple fact that it's not a bowwow is cause enough for celebration. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC STUFF.......2007-01-17

THIS CD BLEW ME AWAY. MONO LISA IS A THEME OF MY SPIRIT. GET THE CD AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF. 18.00 IS AN AWSOME PRICE BUT NOT MORE

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE fot the Cibo Matto fan.......2006-09-08

This album is probably the singularly most fun album in the entire Cibo Matto opus. Featuring guys from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Skeleton Key and a cameo by Sean Lennon. Lots of different styles and influences. Very cool to hear the long-thought-dead New York punk sound coming back on "It's the Rage" -- who knew Miho could sing like that? Other highlights include the stoner-vibe of "How Do I Get High" and the weird combination of surf, swing, and spy on "Dick Serious". Lowest point is the aptly named "Mono Lisa", which is indeed just a loooooong pointless two-lyric drone-on. Yuka Honda's keyboards are really well incorporated into these tracks; absolutely nothing seems strange, out-of-place, or inaccessible. Probably the greatest side-band type of CD I've ever spent money on. Guaranteed to bring smiles...!

5 out of 5 stars too hard to find :(.......2005-01-24

It took me forever to find this CD.

Mona Lisa is my favorite song. A great CD for Cibbo Matto fans dying for anything they can get. Don't play any of these crazy used prices though not worth it.

14 bucks or less :)

5 out of 5 stars Astounding!.......2005-01-19

I've been looking for this CD in record stores for a few years now after hearing it secondhand. A big fan of Cibo Matto, I thought this would be some thrown-together side project. Thank goodness I was wrong! It's one of my favorite albums ever. "9MM" and "Degobah" are insane rockers, while "Butter****er" is plodding but very catchy. Too bad Grand Royal went under and can't rerelease this classic.

5 out of 5 stars Damn son.......2003-02-10

Great album. Harder and faster than other stuff by same people. Blew me away. "Butter of '69" is a great somg as mentioned in other reviews but far from the only one on the album. Great eclectic set of songs, there's something on there for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars butter makes the butter better.......2004-02-15

Excellent with sliced bread. This album sounds just plain fun. Ok, sometimes slightly dirty fun. It almost seems like a fun jam session in places, but that's what makes it's wild shifts in structure all the more amusing. Hot buttered lounge punk with a side of sleazy nostalgia. mmmmmm.
