Album Description

The sixth edition of the SYR series is a live recording of the April 12, 2003 benefit concert held at and for The Anthology Film Archives, the international center for the preservation, study, and exhibition of avant-garde and independent cinema. In addition to screening films for the public, AFA houses a film museum, research library and art gallery.

The event, which raised money for the Archives and celebrated the life and work of avant-garde film maker Stan Brakhage, featured Sonic Youth providing an improvised instrumental collaboration with silent Brakhage's films. The band performed with drummer/percussionist Tim Barnes (Essex Green, Jukeboxer, Silver Jews). Part of the proceeds of this CD will again benefit the Anthology Film Archives.

Challenging?.......2007-03-25

This is another one in the SYR series of Sonic Youth releases. It is more experimental than their usual stuff and also more lo-fi. On teh one hand demanding and interestinga nd on the other hand sel-indulgent. If you like Sonic Youth this is nice because it represents quite a change from their more "mainstream" stuff. Basically there are three very long spacy jams that are influenced quite a lit by both krautrock and experimental music. However sometimes you simply think they cannot play at all...

Very elegant.......2006-02-03

Okay this is not really breaking new ground and it indeed has shades of SYR 3 but then that's not the point. What we have here is an elegant and beautiful sounding recording which almost shimmers with beauty. Certainly it is a "mood" piece and it does create that almost effortlessly. Well worth investigating.

Sonic Youth is the big part of history of the indie music today, with this new release (and other syr series), they are making the music history of the future.

They've made better and more interesting, but this is one that I've enjoyed somewhat. Three stars is what it gets because it hasn't blown my mind, but it's good to listen to when I'm writing and things like that. It's in a similar free jazz improv style to SYR 3, and i think i prefer the latter, but this is not a worthless purchase. it gets listened to when i'm in the mood.

Brigitte Fontaine IS nuts!.......2001-09-01

At the end of his contribution to the liner notes to "Morceaux de Choix," Etienne Daho asks in capital letters, "BRIGITTE FONTAINE EST FOLLE?" Give this "best of" album a listen or just rely on rumor and the clear answer is "OUI."

Which is not a bad thing at all. This album gives a good overview of the uneven career of one of France's best known provocateurs. Of course, if you don't know much French, you won't follow the hallucinogenic, tripped out wordplay that permeates some of the better songs (the full lyrics are in the booklet, which can help settle some of those "Did she really say that?" moments). Many songs are inspired by Middle Eastern/North African music, although Brigitte has tried out several styles and they are well-represented here.

Getting into specifics, "Le Nougat" -- my favorite track -- is a tale of an elephant that appears in Brigitte's bathroom and demands some nougat, which unfolds into a hilarious story driven by a furious Middle Eastern orchestra (the orchestra makes a more brooding appearance on "La Femme a Barbe"). "Conne" is a weird exercise in self-hatred that will put a bewildered smile on the faces of any French speakers and cement any doubts as to Brigitte's sanity. The gently confessional "Brigitte" shows a tender, folky sensibility, and the duet "Cet Enfant Que Je T'Avais Fait" could be a great lost work by Leonard Cohen. "Il Pleut" is dreamy, lullabye-ish, and musically grounded in typical 1960s TV soundtrack trappings (orchestral punctuations, xylophone, occasional flutes, etc). "Chat," "Ah Que la Vie Est Belle," and "Dressing" are electrorchestral music, showing Brigitte's willingness to meld traditional and modern sound structures.

As for the low points, the barely-sung "Comme a la Radio" drags on far too long and is punctuated with high-pitched horns that always remind me of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (assuming I don't skip the song, which happens more often than not). "C'est Normal" sounds like a jam session/conversation between two friends, but unless you want to hear some New Age rambling, there is not much to latch onto, although the melody is nice enough. Some other songs are a little musically bland for my tastes.

"Morceaux de Choix" is worth picking up, as is the just released (August 22 in France) "Kekeland," which will surely be released in the US, since Sonic Youth plays on two songs and since it is generally excellent -- better, I'd say, than even this "best of."

Derrama estilo y glamour. Suena a new wave, a Tango, a Rock experimental,a jazz, a electronica y a channson.Me enferma ocupar la palabra eclectico pero lo es, integramente lo es. Brigitte Fontaine reune a la crema y la nata de la escena musical en un equipo fuera de lugar que merece postrar en un altar esta joya. Del consentido grupo frances M, pasando por la psicodelia experimental de Sonic Youth con su particular guru Jim O'rourke y Areski su complice de cabecera. Fontaine no supera las cosquillas que los sonidos africanos siempre le han hecho y deja claro la escuela que impone a bandas como Stereolab, es una pena que no abusara del moog que tanto le gusto en su momento como en su fabulosa cancion Patriarcat de su etnico album Vous et Nous de 1979.

fabulous decadence.......2003-05-23

a great luxurious fall, graceful as an aging courtesean; it is fabulous and so is she, ribald and profane and full of beauty, she mixes contemporary near-dance music with slices of pipes and antique cafe set pieces which showcase her ennui and angst-stricken voice perfectly -- a loose comparison to Marianne Faithful, to the credit of both.

Incandescent & shadowed, restorative.......2004-05-31

You will feel rich in soul beyond compare if you buy this album. Brigitte Fontaine & Areski loved each other and this can be felt. Strong and beautiful. I find no single note of sentimentality within any of the pieces. Many of the songs are very brief, encapsulating a suggestion of power that can be very haunting. There is a sense of the ancient about it. It is transporting, meditative and brooding. There is a perfect continuity within the album and you will want to play it end to end and again.
