4 out of 5 stars Give It A Chance.......2006-02-22

I was ready to write this one off, literally, after hearing it the first time, having written "no" next to where it was listed in my notes. So why did it keep haunting me? After a second, third, fourth listen, I became totally hooked. Runga's voice is so perfectly, crystal clear, and seductive, that she becomes absolutely irresistable. Jazz, piano pop, I don't know how to categorize this. It may take you a couple of listens, but if you like soft, intelligent jazz.pop.fusion, this may be for you. Five stars for the opening track, "Get Some Sleep," others get three, three 1/2, four ("Listening for the Weather"), but overall a four for this haunting cd.

3 out of 5 stars lots of potential.......2006-01-11

The melodies are pretty dry, but if you're a big Bic Runca fan, then this is another worthy CD. When I listen to the lyrics, I feel like they are each a story on their own. Written in a style that might be fitting for standard country tunes. "Honest Goodbyes" gets my attention because some of the background instruments are placed so well. The flute or piccolo maybe it is, just captures the essence of the parting within the song. The lyrics don't grab me, even though they are well composed. I think the background noises probably help make this album a stand out for Bic Runga fans around, though I have not tried to concentrate so hard on the music to listen to every inkling. I like to be able to pick up on some things on a first or second listen, and this is not one of those type of CDs for me.

So, I'm not feeling the music because I feel there could be more flair to the lyrics and the sound. Something more aggressive or more different and noticeable would help. I think her future album(s) will be worth waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Singer/Songwriter Extraordinare.......2005-09-21

Bic Runga's "Beautiful Collision" should be a part of every music lover's collection. The very first track on the album "when I see you smile," is a great example of the artistry that is Bic Runga. The album is full of rich imagery about love and all its abstract complexities, which is evoked through Bic Runga's very soft voice, that often veers towards ages past but is quick to bring you to the the present. The stand out track on this album is "Gravity" which I encourage everyone to listen to and you will come to know as I do that Bic Runga has taken the hard path down a road that may not lead toward an exuhuberant amount of records sales. But she has done a very noble thing and reqarded her audience as intelligent and is giving us music that respects and entertains us and will forever mark us as followers of her path toward making her kind of art

5 out of 5 stars what it feels like to be in love.......2004-10-26

a friend mailed me this cd from new zealand and i had never heard of bic. the first time i heard this cd i hated it, and it was definitely a jump from all the indie and punk stuff he listens to, but this cd has become one of my absolute favorites.

for me, the song election night is exactly what it feels like to be in love, and one of the most beautiful songs ever. my favorite.

bic's voice is amazing, but while this is on my all time favorites list, i don't like the cd previous to this (drive) at all.

4 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2004-06-05

I just adore this CD, it's a really good soothing CD and I like it best when played straight through, though usually on a CD I'm jumping from one favourite song to another.
I find Bic's voice very unique and I would recommend this CD to anyone I know.

A dark horse. A true sleeper. This is some of the best World-Dub Mix you'll ever hear. No over-zealous pomp-avant garde pushing for the line but instead deeply sensual, complex and, most of all, imaginative music with a big heart beat. Owning a CD collection of several 1000 titles this is still what I put on if I want to put on something truly special.

5 out of 5 stars Great sophomore album showing her growth as a artist.......2002-08-20

Bic Runga follows up her first album, Drive, with a great sophomore release. Musically, it's similar to the first CD in it's vocally-driven songs. Bic's voice and harmonies are so strong that the instruments just give the songs additional warmth. All the tracks are great, but my favorites are "When I See You Smile", "Something Good", "Honest Goodbyes", and "Listening for the Weather." You can hear more jazz influence in this album, so it's different from Drive, but if you're a Bic Runga fan, this album is a must have.

      5 out of 5 stars Bic's brilliant sophomore album.......2002-07-23

Bic Runga is a singular talent: She's got a beautiful, versatile voice, strong musicianship, and great lyrical skills. In this age of cookie-cutter female singer-songwriters, she stands out as truly unique. Bic wrote and produced the album which features star-studded musicians such as Neil Finn, Dave Dobbyn, and Sebastian Steinberg. Her first CD was excellent, but 'Beautiful Collision' stands out a bit more because of the production and arrangements. I hear the influence of old jazz standards, 70's California pop songs, Bjork, and the Beatles on this album. Bic's talent shines because she manages to synthesize all of these disparate influences into her own peerless style.

My favorite songs are the first single 'Get Some Sleep', which is an ironic ode to touring, 'The Be All End All', a beautiful country waltz, and 'Election Night' a mid-tempo rocker.

There's not a bad song on this album, which shouldn't surprise anyone who's a fan of Bic.

      5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2002-07-05

I own the "Drive" album and liked it a lot. Now I've only heard one song from her new album (because it has only been released very recently and is not available in germany yet), and I loved it. It's quite different from "Drive" but I believe that the new album still has the same feeling to it as the old one.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and beautiful album.......2004-01-23

I recently bought my Beautiful Collision album while in New Zealand and over the past 3 months have proceeded to fall in love with every song on it. Bic is clearly a very talented songwriter and singer with an amazing vocal range and distinctive voice. Her songs contain a lovely range of themes and I would reccomend the bonus album that comes with Beautiful Collision as well. The lyrics are really worth listening to, they can be sung to or the music can just play in the background to create a really comfortable and rich atmosphere.

4 out of 5 stars This CD is a keeper! Underrated singer!.......2003-11-17

This is the version of 'Beautiful Collision' with a bonus 7-track CD which I highly recommend purchasing!
If you felt the original 12 track was too short- then buy this version for more great songs!
It is worth it for the B-sides 'Gracie' and 'You Don't Want To Know' which are dreamy. Bic really puts her heart into every song and they have a melody you will be whistling for days...much to the annoyance of your family and friends!
'Question To Ask Me' is a country-and-western tinged ballad which is interesting but doesn't seem to get anywhere.
'Good Morning Baby' was on the 'American Pie' soundtrack and is pretty good...although you can hardly hear Bic's voice over Dan Wilson.
The other two tracks are live versions of 'Something Good' and 'Listening For The Weather'. The only problem is they sound exactly the same as the studio album versions. I guess they prove what great pitch Bic has and how none of her songs are overly-produced to make her voice sound better.

2 out of 5 stars Kind of boring..........2006-03-12

After lisening to a couple of tracks everything becomes blured and repetitious, dreamy and boring, and the woman child voice does not do any good. I do not understand all the buzz around her.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever.......2005-07-09

I first heard Bic Runga when I got the live album with Tim Finn and Dave Dobbyn. That inspired me to pick up Drive and this album, Beautiful Collision, and am I glad I did. I enjoyed both albums although I like the live versions of songs from "Drive" better as that album sounds a bit over-produced to me.

Happily, Beautiful Collision is a different story. Lush, gentle, yet catchy and sometimes surprising (the best use of a banjo and harmonica I've heard in a long while in a couple of songs, though this is not a country-music album), the production is perfect. Bic Runga has one of the most appealing voices I've ever heard - delicate and pure without being cutesy or syrupy, with a wide range. Her vocal technique is quietly self-assured, without resorting to the trickery and posturing of too many female singers out there these days. She reminds me a bit of Natalie Imbruglia as far as bell-like qualities go, but I think she's better. Her lyrics, mostly about love, are fresh and thoughtful - no cliches here. I just never get tired of listening to it, no matter how often I play it.

Buy this album. You'll be glad you did. Bic Runga could teach many of the female singers out there a thing or two.

5 out of 5 stars Bic Runga is unique.......2002-10-04

Don't waste your time buying records from cookie cutter, corporate radio-annointed singer chicks. Spend [amt]on Bic's new album Beautiful Collison. Every song is interesting and evocative, both lyrically and musically. In fact, her lyrics are very spare and each word seems precisely placed, either for its meaning or its sound. (At least that is my impression.) This style reminds me very much of the great Aussie songwriter Paul Kelly.

Bic's voice is an amazing thing of beauty, with range and phrasing that is wholly unique, though on the title track I hear a bit of a Bjorkian influence.

Bic plays many of the instruments on the album, and has recruited some famous sidekicks (Neil Finn, Dave Dobbyn, Sebastian Steinberg among others) to play on it, too. For those who know Bic's music already, this album is not a serious departure from Drive, but rather a progression to a more mature style.

Beautiful Collision is, quite simply, one of the best albums of 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Moving beyond 'Sway'..........2002-09-14

No matter what Bic Runga records from here onward, she'll probably always be associated with SWAY, one of those rare, perfect pop music moments--not bad results considering it came from her very first album (which is recommended). Yet Bic avoids sophomore jinx on BEAUTIFUL COLLISION with plenty of room to spare. Not to take anything away from her last album, but she has made great strides towards a more unified musical approach.

Bic's growth as a songwriter shows up in virtually all of the songs here. The tunes grab you on the first listen, and don't let go with repeat hearings. A crucial factor in getting her songs across is Bic's flexible voice...very attractive and perfect for the quality lyrics. The music is more consistently reflective than before, favoring acoustic guitars rather than the occasionally amped-up tunes on her last album. I don't know if this one will get issued here in the USA, but BEAUTIFUL COLLISION certainly deserves the attention of anyone looking to see the singer/songwriter tradition pushed forward.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait.......2002-08-07

I waited 3 years for this album to come out and i believe it was well worth it all. It's different from Drive in that all the songs have a sense of uniformity rather than being different musical experiments of Bic. It's simple, dreamy, well engineered, and IMHO absolutely beautiful. Great music if you're in love. However, awful--unless you're masochistic--music if you're getting over someone.
