A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

5 out of 5 stars in the words of Paris Hilton : .......2005-11-03

Yes I know that I shouldn't have titled that but that's all that I could think of. The most idiotic thing I've ever read. It actually made me laugh. Okay what really got me was that someone on there refered to mortal combat in relation to batman beyond music. Seriously, they must REALLY not like good music. Well for what I can say is that this music is hot, and it beautiful. Y'all should go get it now. Seriously don't just sit there go order it, buy it, NOW.

p.s. I loved the cartoon. ^__^

5 out of 5 stars Another Please!.......2001-11-12

The first thing you should do if you are thinking of buying this is to play the sample streams offered by Amazon. If you think this may correspond to a genre you would enjoy, then be advised that these samples are like taking a snapshot of the grand canyon - can't do it justice. This is made to be played LOUD!
This score has been chastised by countless folks as being demonic etc.. Go back to Perry Como folks. Many thanks to these musicians and composers for bringing us this earth-trembling music. The rumble gives way to nice softer and exotic tracks that help bring the needed pressure release (some of these tracks are really heavy!).
Audio quality is good on this CD. I really hope another such compilation will be offered.

http://www.filmtracks.com/titles/batman_beyond.html

if you visit this hyperlink you will find the most upsetting review I have ever seen in my life. If you noticed this person obviously doesn't like teenagers and most possibly is scared of them. He continues about how bad this soundtrack is, how it gave him a headache, how it gives the intention of feeling bad. I say that he is mistaken! Sheesh! I love the techno composition of Batman Beyond. If he was a real music lover, he'd love this music especially. It's composition may not be as complex as classical music, which I love very much, but it's simpleness makes it complex. Yes I know that kind of doesn't make sense. And in response to music like this causing shootings in high school . . . BAH! Music is suppose to explain surrondings, feelings, people and in Batman beyond's cause, the setting is suppose to a corrupted place, which the music greatly portrays! Also it gives the nice upbeat music of a battle that takes place between batman and his foe. If you look at the old batman series, with the "pow" and the "bam" and "zap", you could very well say that was influencing violence. I must say that Shirley Walker is a well talented group, should continue with their music and ignore what the man had to say in that review I read above from the hyperlink. I respect the person's idea's but I have every right to tell him he is wrong. Please email me about your feelings on this review to AnimeOngaku@gamebox.net. ^-^ Saiyonara!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Techno CDs around.......2001-03-20

I am a huge fan of techno. I own quite a number of CDs and MP3s of pure techno. This is tied with if not my absolute favorite CD of them all. It has a mix of everything. From slow songs to beats so fast you cant help but turn up your stero so loud that your walls shake. I have a feeling this isnt going to leave my CD player for a long time to come.

This CD is also great for taking to parties or for putting into your computer and playing your favorite games too.

5 out of 5 stars BEYOND SOUNDTRACK IS BEYOND.......2000-11-03

BEYOND SOUNDTRACK IS BEYOND

This CD is an equalized representation of good soundtrack music that really rocks and drives like a four-barreled carburetor. It is just so much better than the first animated Batman series. That wasn't bad, this is just better! With music like this, who needs lyrics? Just don't stay out late and make sure you do all your homework.

Of course, the 1999 animated take on Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I can't really compare to the classic original movie's soundtrack. Predictably enough, Martin Vidnovic doesn't match the legendary performance of Yul Brynner. Luckily, Christiane Noll (Jekyll & Hyde) delivers a more convincing--if slightly overwrought--performance as Anna. The album's second half is dedicated to the Richard Rodgers score as arranged and conducted by William Kidd. Ultimately, Barbra Streisand's lovely medley of "I Have Dreamed/We Kiss in a Shadow/Something Wonderful" is the real reason most folks will want this CD. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars A Discrace to the King of Thailand!!.......2000-12-19

This 1999 version of the original film is severely unhinged. The people who created it must have had no respect for the monarchy, culture, or religion of Thailand. Although the cover may seem appealing, it lacks music that makes you want to join in. By the time you're finished with this one, you'll want to vomit!

4 out of 5 stars The King And I.......2000-06-14

An absolutely charming soundtrack. Christiane Noll does an excellent job with Anna's songs in the movie. If you buy this CD expecting the 1956 movie, or the stage version you may be disappointed, however if you want to listen to a new and interesting version of The King And I, here is your chance. It's also a superb way to introduce children to the sound of Rogers and Hammerstein II.
The songs are done well, staying fairly true to the original with some exceptions - 'I Whistle A Happy Tune' being the most prominently changed. I feel perhaps Louis' voice is maybe too old.
I was pleased to see that two of the songs from the stage were included, although 'Shall I Tell You What I Think Of You' was very abridged. Of course the numbers had to be shortened for the animated feature, to hold children's attention. Sadly, several of the songs from the original were excluded, I missed 'We Kiss In A Shadow' especially. Overall, a real pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars IF YOUR A KING AND I FAN YOU'VE GOT TO TRY THIS OUT BUT............1999-12-18

Martin Vidvonic has three numbers 'A Puzzlement' , 'Prayer to Buddha' and 'Shall We Dance'? I think he was a bit too old for the part, and he cant quite replace the 'strong' 'bellowing' 'manly' singing/speaking voice of Yul Brynner. Miranda Richardson's speaking voice wasnt as good as Deborah Kerr's.....she sounded older than Deborah Kerr actually, and even Christianne Noll cant replace the sweet, smoothe voice of Marni Nixon.....the tunes are a little different compared to the tunes in the original 1956 motion picture.....specially 'I Whistle a Happy Tune' as well as 'Hello, Young Lovers' and 'Getting to Know You'. Still, Christianna Noll DOES have a sweet voice worth listening to, in HER OWN right. I really liked the 'I Have Dreamed' version in this since Prince Chulalongkorn's singing/speaking voices are VERY romantic, and even Tuptim's singing voice is VERY sweet and smoothe. I also love Barbra Streisand's We Kiss in a Shadow/I Have Dreamed/Something Wonderful combined song. I didnt much care for 'Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?' since many parts of it are cut, and Christianne Noll sounds like an old woman.....I think Miranda Richardson, Anna's speaking voice should have sung it. Anyway, though it can NEVER compare to the original 1956 motion picture so7undtrack, I highly recommend this for 'King and I' fans......It certainyl deserves five stars because of the BRILLIANT instrumental numbers and also because the singing is SPLENDID....( in its own right ofcourse.......LOL!) Dont try to compare this to the 1956 movie.....Enjoy it in its OWN right and you'll find it REALLY SOMETHING WONDERFUL.....LOL! ROTFLOL!

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening.......2007-01-23

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra (Kingston, Ontario) may not be the NY Philharmonic, but they do a very creditable job of providing wonderful music for easy listening. I was particularly delighted to find orchestral arrangements of these wonderful tunes. I am very glad that I purchased this album and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of music.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Disney.......2007-01-10

I enjoyed this album and found it useful to choreograph dances for my students.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat sub-standard production quality, but excellent tunes and arrangements.......2005-09-01

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra might not be the very best ensemble in the world (and it shows on this recording), but the lasting power and beauty of the songs on this album and some of the new and lovely arrangements of them are worth the listen. There are some definite technical and musical flaws as far as the recording and ensemble go, but the music and how it's arranged makes up for it.

Three stars for some soaring moments, due to classic tunes and arrangements.

My main beef: Where's The Little Mermaid?? Why discount one of the most beautiful Disney scores ever written?

1 out of 5 stars Crap!.......2005-08-09

What a scam! Terrible arrangements played by a third rate ensemble, called the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, that sounds more like a bad high school orchestra playing in a gym. Don't waste your money on this dog.

      Amazon.com essential recording

Continuing Riccardo Chailly's topical Shostakovich recordings (he's already visited the composer's jazz-inflected and dance pieces), this collection of music for film offers the series greater heft. The music here is as entangled in politics and pop culture as the jazzy and dancy material, but here the emotions are more complex and the execution more exciting.

The films Shostakovich was scoring somehow sought legitimacy or outright approval from Soviet power regimes, but as in all his music, Shostakovich enacted subtle subversions. The parade-step march cadences of The Counterplan are exaggerated just enough to integrate all kinds of conflicting dark undertows, emphasized coyly by Chailly and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The excerpts from Alone are all over the map, spooky and turbulent and bleak in equal measures, in answer to so many mandated bright, blasting musical ventures elsewhere in the Soviet cultural regime. The works continue until 1967, with a twisty waltz from Sofia Perovskaya, which seems more like a distant comment on the notion of a dance piece than music scripted for dance. For its mix of big, lit sweeps and minute, shadowy motions, this is one of the best single-CD Shostakovich sets--themed or not--in print. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars recording of ligfhter music by Shos the heavy composer .......2005-11-24

This recording is excellent. The works are rather light so one does not notice at first that the recording is that good. After some listebning I notice and i Am sure you will do too. Pirogorov and Sofia Petrovskaja i like best. Great recording.

      4 out of 5 stars yep, i'd agree.......2004-12-29

This is the perfect album for anyone who believes Shostakovich was only capable of writing music that expressed his inner turmoil.
Here is an album of the composer just doing his job (writing soundtracks for propaganda films) and showing he's capable of playing the field like a consummate pro.
Many of the melodies may sound vaguely familiar, and it's no wonder; they were often pilfered by other assembly line arrangers for Hollywood musicals and other upbeat entertainment.
I'd have to agree with the previous reviewer, who thinks track 25 is the best. It's the Romance from "The Gadfly", which is arguably Shostakovich's greatest melody, played here with perfection; the "lazy" pizzicato and slightly staggered fourth beat in the measure is something I haven't heard before on this piece, and it works very nicely for these ears.

4 out of 5 stars A Unique Collection of Works.......2000-11-25

The film scores of Dmitri Shostakovich are certainly not his best works, but they are definetly worth a look. There is a great range of music on this CD, from the joyful 'Tale of the Silly Little Mouse' to the harshness of 'Hamlet', and Chailly and his players give solid performances throughout. I wouldn't really recommend this as an introduction to Shostakovich's works, but if you're a fan, then it would make a great addition to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Track 25 is the best.......1999-06-17

Shostakivich wrote some 'heavy' music, but in his better moments he wrote some beautiful melodies (e.g. The Jazz Suite) and film themes including The Tale of the silly little mouse'. What a pity that you have to wait until track 25 for the best piece - the Romance from the 'Gadfly' (Theme music from the BBC series 'Reilly, ace of spies'). The definitive recording of this piece was the version by the USSR Cinema Symphony Orchestra, with Khatchaturian conducting, but the version on this recording is also excellent.

It seems doe, the songs are more brutal and faster and that made me very happy. Strictly for morticians fans and horro movie fanatics. Get mortician albums specialy their latest re-animated flesh...

5 out of 5 stars Mortician never sells out..........2006-05-12

This band is one of my favorites... They will always sound this way no matter what people say and they will never change. Mortician's "re-animated dead flesh" is without a doubt brutal and it is not for emo gay kids or nu-metal posers. Buy it and keep the underground alive.

5 out of 5 stars Not for sissy mary little girls.......2005-12-08

Mortician is BRUTAL, that's all you need to know. They are BRUTAL which means they have brutally fast programmed drum machine, over the top guttural vocals/gorey lyrics, and they are overall just one of the fastest bands out there, but they have sick breakdowns too. Once again, the samples they choose are always the best, bringing back great memories of some of the best movies of all time. Well to end this review, you are probably not gonna buy this CD anyways because you're a complete loser, so go back to whatever you WERE listening to and pretend that it's brutal. For everyone else, pick this up and stay BRUTAL.

4 out of 5 stars Same 'ole Mortician-a good thing!!.......2005-10-19

Well the heaviest band are back again. I never get bored w/their low end fuzzy bass, it's awesome. The band consistently puts out brutal music, no ballads here. I would say this is probably the best guitar sound they have achieved, heavier than previous releases, something I did not think could happen. Songs like Unseen Darkness are exceptional because of the sheer heaviness and it's slow, before erupting, into the usual Mortician blast. I always will love their brutality, but songs like the above mentioned just stand out more because they don't sound like the rest of the songs. I only wish they did more songs like this. My favorite parts are the slower heavier parts and they never put enough of them in. However the over the top grind is still great to listen to, and that I still don't get bored with, just wish they would mix things up a little more. Bring songs back, like the Slaughterhouse songs, brutal heaviness chugging along at a mid tempo, or songs like Ghost House that were slower but beyond heavy. Anyway if you like Mortician you will still like this release, they're as brutal as ever.

I find it difficult to even write this review, given the fact that there isn't an option for 0 stars.

This CD isn't even worth the print if it doesn't carry at least -some- of Silvestri's work on it. It doesn't, so it's horrible. Stay very far away from this synthesized piece of crap.

      20. There'll Never Be Good-Bye (The Theme Of Metropolis)

      Amazon.com

A dazzling and atypical musical score is the perfect tone for the gorgeous visuals of this anime film. Toshiyuki Honda's Dixieland jazz-influenced music is a daring counter to the futuristic vision of the three-tiered, near-robotic society. The title track is reminiscent of Woody Allen's theme for his futuristic film Sleeper. Half of Honda's score uses more characteristic orchestrations for several of the films' action scenes and the love theme ("Sympathy," which is later reorchestrated in the so-so end-credit song "There'll Never Be Good-Bye"). This is one of the indispensable anime soundtracks, and wonderful listening for even the non-anime fan. One demerit for the CD not containing Ray Charles's "I Can't Stop Loving You." The song beautifully counterpoints the explosive conclusion and is a vital part of the whole music score. --Doug Thomas

      Album Description

The future of robots and humans . . . as predicted by Osamu Tezuka.

Based on the classic comic by legendary illustrator Osamu Tezuka, Metropolis has been brought to the screen by two of the most respected figures in Japanese animation today (Katsuhiro Otomo and Rintaro).

Metropolis is a futuristic story of the ageless class struggle, not amongst humans, but between humans and the humanoid, set in a futuristic city at the height of its civilization. Spectacularly rendered in its visual style, it combines the best in Japanese animation with the latest in digital technology.

The original soundtrack is composed by Toshiyuki Honda and the music blends the New Orleans & Dixie style jazz with classical music.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-10-01

This CD is perfect for any of those out there who loved the movie "Metropolis" like i did. The soundtrack is wonderful giving in to that '30s type jazzy feel that goes along with the whole private detective era and the fast techno type music to give it that futuristic feel. Great combination of both. This CD is a fantastic buy.

5 out of 5 stars For people who loved the movie and jazz fans alike.......2004-04-05

There are two different types of tracks in this CD: there are those that sound like a movie soundtrack (in other words, you might need to have seen the movie to get the picture), and there are tracks that are downright great jazz. I played this at my home, and my father was tapping his feet to the opening theme.

This jazz is not the "smooth jazz" you hear in book stores. This is the kind of jazz you can imagine played at night clubs during the 30's, with musicians gathering together to play simply for the sake of music. From the opening "Metropolis" to the whacky "El Bombero" and the drumming "Run" this is music you can simply enjoy. If you haven't seen the movie, but you like jazz or the blues, then by all means buy this CD. Except for "St. James Infirmary" this is all original music, and the people who worked on it are gods of music themselves.

Buy it, pop it in, listen, and let the music take you over.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL AND STRANGE.......2003-06-25

THis is a superb soundtrack for a neat movie. The movie is loosely based on the 1926 sci-fi Metropolis (but with less of a moral point) and is supposedly some kind of breakthrough in anime cartoons. The music is strange because it is all American - jazz, ragtime, etc, but done by Japanese musicans and very authentic. Cool as heck!

5 out of 5 stars like the JAZZ.......2003-06-02

I love the jazz its great i saw the movie in theaters 3 times and i have it and watched it like 4 times. its so like jazzY honda did a great job composing it. Ilove it.Its a masterpeice get it NOW!. p.s the movie yeah parents cautioned violince some things not mature for kids

      4 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2002-05-17

This is a very nice album. I loved the music while watching the movie. I finally got it when I was in the CD store last night. I wish they could include "I can't stop loving you", and improve the recording a bit. Overall a very very nice album with mixed type of music.

      I recommand it wholeheartly.
