Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Cory's got a new fan.......2003-10-13
I have been A Pat Green fan for a couple of years now,and I heard a lot about but never got into Cory Morrow's music.
Until, now. A buddy gave me the CD "Man That I Have Been",and man, they earned theirselves a new fan!I will be checking out his earlier CD's.If you love Texas music like I do; then this is a must buy!Cory keep up the good work!
Texas is not just rich with oil -- great music abounds.......2002-02-01
People generally tend to recall the past as being more memorable than it actually was at the time. Surely, many people today probably recall fondly a time before the 80s when music was more of an art than a production. Since time traveling is obviously impossible, perhaps the best option -- so as to experience very good music -- would be to listen to TEXAS COUNTRY. Pat Green's music definitely is a must. Just as good, and perhaps very true to its roots, is the music of Cory Morrow. Songs like "Nashville Blues" and "Texas Time Travelin'" are Texas anthems (absolutely great live, still great on disc) that will have the listener instantly hooked and singing along, even without knowing the words. Fans of Willie and Waylon will love this disk. Fans of great music will tell all of their friends about Morrow's music. N'Sync fans won't have a clue.
Cory Morrow = A +.......2002-01-21
Cory Morrow is a wonderful artist that really makes you want to get in a truck and drive the backroads of Texas. His music will make you feel good. This CD not only includes beautiful Texas country music like Texas Time Travelin but also funny songs like Drink One More Round & Big City Stripper. I highly recommend this CD as well as any other Cory Morrow CD's.

Customer Reviews:
one of their best albums.......2006-09-07
the hollies never really were an album band as far as the latter
CLARKE,SYLVESTER,HICKS incarnation this was really a well rounded album .WRITE ON is a great track LOVE IS THE THING has those classic hollie harmonies in full tact. One of the finnest tracks and so underated is MY ISLAND overall a very enjoyable disc.
The Hollies.......2002-05-31
A veritable Smorgasbord of musical delight. I'm only amazed by the number of times I say to myself "The Hollies did this?" What I want to know is, where can I find the lyrics to the song "Write On"? I'm enthralled with the ease that this music flows through me. I've purchased several of their CD's and I'm sure that I'll purchase more. This album is a must have for any Hollies fan (or anyone who appreciates music). I give it the highest rating available. Enjoy listening...
Exquisite Pop Ballads.......2001-06-04
As a crazed Hollies fan, I'll be the first to admit that few of the group's albums (including Write On) are "masterpieces." So why collect the Hollies' library? They're superb at creating exquisite pop ballads with soaring vocal harmonies. "Love Is The Thing," "I Won't Move Over" and "My Island" are precious examples of melodic love songs. Few bands can equal the breathtaking heartbreak of "There's Always Goodbye." Write On bounces along gingerly with touches of funk (Star), county-pop (Sweet Country Calling) and an enticing Latin dance number (Narida). Unfortunately, the latter half of the album disappoints with the aimless "Stranger" and the breakneck tempo of "Crocodile Woman (She Bites)."
Budget conscious collectors should search for the Hollies EMI "Boxes." Released in 1995, each contains four Hollies' CDs replicating the original vinyl LP format, and selling for about forty dollars.
SOUNDS BETTER THE SECOND TIME.......2000-04-28
This was a very poorly received Hollies release around 1976. It never got properly released in the U.S. This time the CD mastering is outstanding. The sound quality really brings out the excellence of some nice compositions. The title song jumps out of the speakers and demands attention. This might possibly be the best ever application of the 2nd generation Hollies harmonies. Other great songs like the ballads "My Island", "I Wont Move Over" and "There's always goodbye", one of the best Hollies rockers ever, "Crocadile Woman" add up to a diverse collection of memorable songs. Unfortunately, there are some weaker songs that just don't hold up over the years. Some, such as the opener, "Star" are decent, but just a bit dated. Bonus tracks are a big attraction on this one. The 2 live versions are better than the studio versions, though they can also be found on the Hollies Live CD. The other 3 songs are gems. "Boulder to Birmingham" is remade in the great Hollies tradition, achingly beautiful Allan Clarke vocal with soaring harmonies. "Samuel" is too good to have not been released originally. The most surprising song is the previously unavailable on CD version of Bruce Springsteens "Born to Run". Done in the vein of "Long Cool Woman", it would have been interesting to see how it would have done as a single if released earlier. The combination of great sound quality and some excellent songwriting make this an unexpected Hollies listening pleasure. I don't understand the apathy at the time of its release. It probably has more to do with it being out of place at the time of its release. But for me, it is further evidence of the ability of the latter day Hollies to produce very good long players at a time when the top 40 hits had all dried up. All in all, a solid 3-1/2 to 4 star release superbly enhanced by the sound quality.

Folk records that aren't super traditional usually lean toward one or more other styles, and this artist leans toward rock and blues, but in an acoustic way. In fact, it begins with a very credible cover of the Traffic classic "40,000 Headmen."

You MUST listen to this guy!.......2006-03-07
I've been sitting here trying to find words that will express just how AWESOME the Seth James Band is, and it's hopeless. He is too good for words. Saw him and his band live Saturday night, opening for Cross Canadain Ragweed, and I was blown away. Best live band (and now that I've heard his cd) I've heard in three years. Hands down.
another excellent guitarist carries on the texas tradition.......2005-07-27
In the spirit of SRV, this is another brilliant TEXAS BLUES offering by a relative unknown. Every song is an original except the somewhat different ( and very exciting ) version of GOING DOWN SLOW. He doesn't overplay and delivers on every track. His vocals are very good and his solos have style and chops in equal measure. Once again, if you like the guitar or the blues, buy it, you'll be glad you did.
BLOWN AWAY!!!.......2004-07-13
Seth James is amazing! Heard the local DJ's raving about him, so decided to check him out. This guy is unbelievable, best guitar playing since Stevie Ray Vaughn and Santana, and his voice ain't bad either ;)! Super nice guy too, very friendly. Got my autographed CD on the spot, think I listened to it non-stop for 2 months, and it never leaves my CD changer. I see him live every chance I get!! FYI--His wife is in the biz too, back up singer for Texas artist Cory Morrow
AWESOME.......2004-05-18
Every generation needs that one special blues guitarist...and this man is IT! He also has a live CD out that is out of this
world and Seth is around to stay. I listen to this CD over and over for hours.
Brand-New Texas Blues "Legend".......2003-04-26
"Bad Luck And Trouble" is fresh, original music from a very talented singer/songwriter. However, Seth's greatest musical talent is his unbelievable guitar playing. The songs on this CD come alive during a live show, so be sure to catch him on the road.... My favorite tracks are "House On The Hill" and "Bad Luck And Trouble". Expect great things from this new artist in the future. Seth, we're looking forward to the new album, and hopefully a live album to follow!!

Practically the same old thing.......2006-12-10
The charm of a Rodgers and Hart song is the words. Rodgers was good, but without Hart, he would not be nearly as well remembered or loved. His stint with Hammerstein depended on the maudlin stupidity of Hammerstein's words attracting the vacuity of the american public. They suck. Though they do achieve a kind of amateurish poetry that other lyricists don't even try for. Hammerstein, which I've never heard anyone say before, could be quite witty. That said, this CD. I stupidly asked about the timings (I bought this through the Amazon Marketplace and consequently didn't lose much money) after I'd ordered the CD. Most of the verses and choruses of "Manhattan" and "Mt. Greenery" are, as usual, left out. "As usual." That's the phrase. This is an "as usual" collection of R&H standards. It has as far as I'm concerned only 3 things to recommend it. "Bewitched, Bothered..." is sung with the original earthy lyric which after about 65 years of the Doris Day version was a joy. I think that track, by the way, is from the English cast revival, but I'm not sure. "Small Hotel" is sung complete, all the words, including the verse and the patter. And sigh "You Took Advantage of Me" is given a wonderful rendition, I thought. The rest is pleasant, achingly familiar background music. Maybe in another 100 years or so, all (or most or lots) R&H's rarities with complete lyrics will have made it to CDs (or their equivalent), and even hopefully some more studio cast recordings of their shows. Complete. I was very disappointed in this CD, and very glad I only spent $10.50 total for it.

Great CD!.......2003-05-17
Her cover of "Long Black Veil" is fantastic! I wish you could here the sample. The other tunes are good to, but frankly I would own it just for "Veil". "Wishbone" is a good song too, that's a good one to try out.

Barber's wonderful, beautiful music.......2001-11-21
This is a collection of 19 works by Samuel Barber. It contains some very popular Barber works (Adagio for Strings, Medea's Meditation), some lesser known (Summer Music, The Lovers) and many I'd never heard before. All are beautiful.
This album's version of Medea's Meditation and Dance of Vengeance is surprisingly slow tempoed. It caught me off balance for a bit but it was a nice change of pace. The Hermit Songs were all instrumental only -- also nice for a change of pace. One song, "To Be Sung on Water" performed by the Oregon Repertory Singers, was absolutely glorious. "Hesitation Waltz", a piano duet, is an unusual work with emotional undercurrents that I didn't notice at first listen.
It's almost impossible these days to find an album which contains something other than the four or five most popular Barber works. This one showcases 17 of those hard-to-find pieces. What a great album!
A broad survey of Barber's wonderful music.......2001-04-05
In the history of 20th century classical music, Samuel Barber is a well-loved, if not "revolutionary", figure. His skill with the craft of melody is justly famous, and his work reflects elegance and craft; however, he was also a master of contrapuntal composition ("Adagio for Strings", aka the second movement of his String Quartet, could be used in advanced composition classes as a masterpiece of counterpoint) and a great orchestrator. His Capricorn Concerto is a jewel-like triple concerto (trumpet, flute and oboe with strings), full of rhythm, movement and light-- the second movement is especially brilliant, with delightful interplay among the solo instruments and a lovely slow section (soft strings and an exquisitely melancholy short oboe solo). The rest of the selections are also well-done and welcome (if the "Adagio" is overplayed, the "Hermit Songs" are just not performed enough!). A nice collection of Barber's high-quality oeuvre.
