Album Description

The 7th solo album from singer/songwriter Colin Hay (from Men at Work). This album shows Colin Hay at the top of his game. It is a most compelling work from a brilliant songwriter. The album has a full electric sound with lush string and horn arrangements. Undoubtedly his best album to date.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Colin Hay is awesome!.......2006-05-11

My husband turned me on to Colin Hay as he and his best friend from high school were big "Men at Work" fans and subsequently followed his solo career. "Company of Strangers and "How Long Will It Last?" are beautiful, beautiful songs. I love the strings in "Company of Strangers"; it's a mesmerizing song. Of course, the lyrics on this CD are fantastic, as always, especially in "How Long Will It Last?"

This is my favorite CD right now. Buy it. You will NOT be disappointed. All of the songs are good. (The only one I skip is "Lucky Bastard" because I listen to the CD in the van with my 6-year-old and 4-year-old sons. They love Colin Hay and know the lyrics!

Incidentally, my husband and I were fortunate to have seen Colin Hay in concert at a club in Denver this past year. Colin is an OUTSTANDING performer -- funny, too! I can't wait to see him again!

5 out of 5 stars Colin Hay at Largo In Los Angeles.......2006-04-09

Just saw Colin tonight in the tiny club Largo on Fairfax in Los Angeles where he is a egular since he lives here - He began the set acoustic and then brought on four others, including his wife. The set lasted about 2 hours and was filled with Colin's humor and an absolutely amazing array of his solo work and some MAW singles as well. I hadn't purchased any of his solo work, but after tonight, they are all part of my collection - "Company" being the favorite since he played many of the songs found here -

4 out of 5 stars As Always, Good Stuff.......2005-12-30

You may find this one a bit sleepy at first, but stick with it. It's more mid- and slow-tempo than previous Hay albums like "Looking For Jack," "Wayfaring Sons," and "Topanga." On the first pass, only "Small Town Big Hell," "No Win Situation," "Don't Wait Up," and the haunting title track really jumped out at me. However, if you give it a few tries, songs like "I Got Woken Up," "Dear J," "How Long Will it Last" and the closer really start to grow on you. I started out mildly disappointed and ended up thinking it's among the best work he's ever done. It also features the third recording thus far of "Beautiful World," this one virtually indistinguishable from the version on "Man @ Work." It's a gorgeous song, though, so fine by me. All in all, a very worthy buy for fans of this underrated artist.

I provide the following as a checklist for Colin Completists who are stymied and frustrated by the lack of availability of his solo albums. If you wanna have it all, this is what you gotta get (wherever you can get it):
- LOOKING FOR JACK [1986, not commercially available]
- WAYFARING SONS [1990, not commercially available]
- PEAKS & VALLEYS [1992, available on import]
- TOPANGA [1994, available but expensive]
- TRANSCENDENTAL HIGHWAY [1998, available]
- GOING SOMEWHERE [2000, available]
- COMPANY OF STRANGERS [2002, available]
- MAN @ WORK [2003, available]

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Colin Hay is Amazing!.......2005-08-19

There is so much to say about this extremely talented artist, but the other reviews have done such a fine job in doing so. Along with Jeff Lynne (of ELO), Colin Hay is one of the most talented, yet under-appreciated musicians of our time. And, this album is truly one of his finest compilations. Colin is one of the few artists that can bring me to tears with the beauty of his music (in a weak moment). :) Order this CD while you can and try to see Colin in concert. You'll see exactly what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars colin is brilliant.......2004-04-03

well I have seen him twice in Australia in the last 4 years and he is not to be missed. The last time was in Melbourne I flew from Perth Western Australia to see him. I love all of his album but my favs are peaks and valleys , T>Highway and Going somewhere.

Former Coen brothers cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld has carved out a nice, if unlikely, niche as one of the '90s most consistently succesful directors (The Addams Family, Get Shorty), and the megahit alien spoof Men in Black only enhanced that reputation. The film's quirky MIB orchestral score by Danny Elfman is represented here by just two cuts; the feel-good hip-hop grooves of star Will Smith, Snoop Doggy Dogg, A Tribe Called Qwest, and others that take center stage instead. Still, a more convincing argument for "positive rap" would be hard to imagine. --Jerry McCulley

and this one is no exception. It's got all the music and songs from the movie that I like. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Still as good as ever!!.......2006-10-30

I originally bought this album on cassette when it was first released, cos I didn't have a cd player at the time. 9 years later, after probably hundreds of plays, that poor tape got so worn out I had to try and find it on cd....which just DIDN'T happen in any Australian store, or any place I could order it here. Amazon, however, came to my rescue! Even after almost a decade, this music is still as good as it was in '97, and anyone who says otherwise needs their head read!

4 out of 5 stars This is a very good album.......2006-01-21

Anyone who enjoys good R&B music will get much enjoyment from this CD. Nas also has a very good rap track on this CD. A good mix of various artists. This CD offers a soothing and relaxing aray of tracks. To tell u the truth I was suprised how good this CD was, I only bought it for the Ginuwine track. My other favorite track would have to be Trey Lorenz's "Make u happy".

4 out of 5 stars A Good Album.......2005-10-11

This is a good album for cruisin', blazin', and just chillin' to. If it's a cold ass day outside, then just kick it with this album in your stereo. I like this album because it has different types of tracks on it. Some are good for bumpin', some are good for grindin', ya dig? Anyway, cop this album, it's a good one for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Title of the original.......2005-10-03

The title of the original song was Forget Me Nots and I'm pretty sure it was by Patrice Rushen.

Can we put Humpty Dumpty back together again-? Edward Ka-Spel & LPD are definitely going to try. - "All The King's Men" (all new material) & its companion release on Soleilmoon "All The King's Horse's," are albums inspired & affected by the events of September 11th. In classic LPD form, they use a nursery rhyme to evoke both the apocalyptic events of a year ago & the hope that has arisen from them. This album is a paradox & a provocation. The world has fallen apart & we must put it back together. What should we do?

      Album Description

Formed in the UK in 1980, they are more together today than ever before. They have produced over 25 albums in there 22 years of being together. This album is inspired by the events of Sep 11th. 'Can we put Humpty Dumpty back together again'? ROIR. 2002.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but ultimately disappointing........2003-03-10

"All The King's Men," along with its sister album "All The King's Horses" is the latest
studio release from the ever-prolific Legendary Pink Dots. While it really is a good album
if you think about it, ultimately it comes off as a bit unsatisfying and disappointing. "All
The King's Horses" I would say is the superior album, and to compare "...Men" to
relatively recent releases, it ranks in my estimation quite a ways below "A Perfect
Mystery," and "Nemesis Online." Going back chronologically, I'd say it's the worst
full-length album of new material since 1988's "The Golden Age," which I didn't think
      was that great.

Sounds bad, but didn't I just say it's a good album? Allowing for what I expect from a
Dots' release, it is a good album. The quality threshold of Dots' albums is so high that
even their bad ones are better than the best works of other bands in my view. No other
band has for so long so consistently put out great albums in my opinion.

One of my problems with this album is that out of 10 tracks, 3 of them are instrumentals.
Despite the fact that one of them is very good, generally I think the Dots' instrumental
tracks tend to veer toward experimental throwaways.

What's worse is that the technically mixing of this album is very strange. It's not bad in
the lo-fi 80s Dots way, but it does interfere with the enjoyment of this album. The vocals
on some tracks tend to be far too much louder than the instruments. To give you an
example, on my stereo to obtain an optimal listening level for "Hallway of the Gods" (a
Dots album with stellar mixing) I usually have to turn up to 4 1/2. For "All The King's
Men" I had to turn it up to 6 or 7, and then the vocals blew me away. This problem is
somewhat alleviated if you have a very good surround-sound system or listen to the album
on good headphones (I highly recommend either one).

Now, onto a run-down of the songs:

Cross Of Fire - Honestly, there's not much to say about this song. It strikes me as being
ultimately forgettable. It's not bad, but it's not very good or memorable.

The Warden - This song is the highlight of the album. If I was a record promoter, I would
choose this song as the single; it is by far the most commercially viable song on the album.
It starts out with a great organ piece that sounds like it could have come from the
soundtrack of the excellent video game series Castlevania, and then leads into a soaring,
singularly haunting lament. A very good track.

Touched By The Midnight Sun - Another great track, probably my second favorite on the
album. It's very spacey, like something from "9 Lives to Wonder" or "Chemical
Playschool 8-9." In fact, it reminds me most of "The Artificial Silence" from the latter
album. A stripped down piece, consisting primarily of out-in-space vocals, spacey effects
and birds singing, as you can imagine, this is a nice song to listen to after a
      marijuana-smoking session.

Rash - An instrumental, but a great one. Very mechanical sounding, very neat, and a bit
spooky, with some great background effects. This song reminds me of "Invaders in the
Raita," also from Chemical Playschool 8-9."

The Day Before It Happened - After Rash, the song quality of the album begins to take
quite the nose-dive. A poppy piece that starts off timid and quiet, but picks up and gets
better in the second half. I didn't much care for this track.

Brighter Now - "Brighter Now" is a grand, sweeping track that leads into an orchestral
march, resplendent with very emotional vocals. I know, it sounds good, and usually I
absolutely love Dots' songs answering to that description; yet this one falls very flat with
me and makes no connection whatsoever. I can't explain it, I feel like I should like this
track, but I don't. It has all the ingredients, but doesn't come through.

Marz Attacks - I've listened to this song quite a few times to give it a chance, but it

      remains essentially a throwaway instrumental.

Sabres At Dawn - The album begins to pick up again a little! Sabres At Dawn, while not
as good as tracks 2-4, is a delightfully little piece, an electronic waltz reminiscent of those
you'll find more commonly on Edward Ka Spel's solo works. Quite nice! Takes a while
      to grow on you.

"All The King's Men" - An 11+ minute opus... these types of Dots' songs are sketchy.
You have your magnificent ones like "Hallway," "Andromeda Suite," and "Premonition
13" to name a few and then some forgettable ones, like those on "Chemical Playschool
10" or "Malachai." This one, however, is quite good. It starts out very techno-like, and
progressively gets heavier until its almost industrial; after a while it degenerates into
chaotic noise, and then goes back to techno.

However, the effects of this song are tremendous! The first two times I listened to it, I
thought it was simply good. Then, one day after smoking a copious amount of marijuana,
I put my headphones and cranked this track up. The way the instruments and sound
effects dance circles around your head when listening to this song on headphones or with a
good surround sound hook up, is quite the feat of aural engineering. When the vocals
kick in toward the latter part of the song, I nearly jumped out of my seat. The vocals are
sufficiently unsettling, but when you listen to them with headphones on, it feels as if
Edward is talking directly into the back of your neck, like you can feel his breath close on
the nape of your neck! I later tried listening to this on headphones while completely
sober, and indeed, no two ways about it, it is a remarkable thing, but you can imagine on
sensual and disturbing it is when listening to it half-baked to the stars. The long, drawn
out sounds of what I presume to be bombs dropping is also incredible. As I've said
      before, a great track.

The Brightest Star - A 10+ minute extended instrumental jam, notably for the striking
      violin pieces, but otherwise forgettable.

So as I've said before, this is a good album, but disappointing, because while 5 of the
tracks (2,3,4,8,9) are good, the rest are pretty much easily forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars All The Kings Horses is Great.......2002-11-08

All The Kings Men is part two to follow a masterpiece ALL THE KINGS HORSES - Not listed and I don't Understand why. But to review All The Kings Men is easy - A very pleasent trip with TLPD's once again filled with fun lyrics and imaginary instrumentals - But please try and find ALL THE KINGS HORSES before this one. You will love it - Its by far the best music written in the new millenium and I have collected all the LPD's cd's since the start and KINGS HORSES is the best ever. Belongs in the the halls of music for the gods. Cheers.

      5 out of 5 stars ..........2002-11-06

I thought the cd was fabu! ... I like it a lot. I also liked the new trak from Justin from american idol on the american idol soundtrack. It rocks! His music is so hard core it makes my eardrums bleed. ...

      3 out of 5 stars disapointed.......2002-11-03

I love the Pink Dots! I have seen them in concert so many times I have lost count. My brother has almost everything ever recorded by this incredible group. I listened to this album several times in my car and I was very disapointed with the sound Quality. The mix was bad. The piano would start off so quiet you had to turn the sound full on. Then the vocals would come in and it will blow your ears off. The whole album doesn't sound right. On some songs the music is louder than the vocals and others the opposite. Now my car has a great sounding stereo and I listen to most of my music in my car, but I tried it on my home stereo and I was shocked at the difference. In surround mode it sounded so much better. A lot of the sounds missing in "stereo" are heard in the surround speakers and they sound great. So if you want to listen to this cd, try it in surround and it is well worth while.

      4 out of 5 stars strange..........2002-10-19

I must admit I was a bit disappointed when i first listened to this album when it came out a week ago. I received the 2 new LPD albums, 'All the King's Horses' and 'All the King's men'; The former is simply delicious, dark and so so beautiful and subtle; one of the best LPD albums I've ever heard, and that's saying a lot since they're my absolute favourite band.
But 'All the King's Men' is very different. More electronic and minimalistic, but also guitars in the instrumental songs. There're too many instrumental songs and they're maybe too long and repetitive for me.
But please don't misunderstand me, this is a Legendary pink Dots album, and that means good music. I suppose they wanted to disorientate us with this album, which sounds on the one hand as a back to the roots to the dark electronic waltzes of early albums such as 'Brighter Now' and 'Curse', and on the other as a push against any categorisation.

5 out of 5 stars Two Of the Best 70's CDs on One Disc!.......2007-02-06

I own every possible record, CD, and 45 by the Daredevils. Larry Lee is one of my favorite singers in all of pop-rock music. So, with these two albums being heavily influenced by the writing and singing of Larry Lee, I was thrilled to see these albums combined! I already owned the New Era versions, which are excellent, but the thing that had eluded OMD fans was the "Album" or "Longer version" of the hit, "You Know Like I Know". How this song has appeared on several albums with it always being the shortened version, is beyond me!! Finally the long version is here, with great sound quality!

Other highlights are: "Mr. Powell", "It's How You Think", and "Whipporwill". The only Top 40 hits are "You Know Like I Know" and "If I Only Knew". The Daredavils never dominated the Top 40 charts but their albums are just "Good Old Times" back in the day. I can always get such a feel of sunny days out in the country, boppin' along an old dusty dirt road. The ballads are beautiful and the combination of bluegrass, country, pop, and rock, make for a group that has no true category. For reflecting back to the 70's, happy times and great tunes to hum along with. It's the Daredevils, they never got the recognition deserved! Also recommended are their first two albums.

5 out of 5 stars Another nice remaster.......2006-12-07

These two albums have already been released by New Era with nice bonustracks. This cd has no bonustracks but another great big plus: it has the full album version of "You know like I know" from the Men From Earth album on it, while on the New Era version only the single version (which is rather shorter) can be heard.
The remastering is just as good as the New Era versions.

5 out of 5 stars Those were the days..........2007-06-13

Men at Work seriously took the world by storm in the 1980's with that amazing, offbeat reggae-influenced funky 80's pop, in the tradition of other such fantastic bands as The Police and Toto.
      Those were the days...
This compilation really brings them back...inclkudes the Australian unofficial pop anthem, Down Under, the colourful Who Can It Be Now?, the energetic Be Good Johnny and the offbeat Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive.

This is a real tribute to the very best of 80's pop.

5 out of 5 stars men at work was the bomb back in the 80's and still are.......2004-11-18

i belive men at work is still there and are still playing out there somewhere. at least colin hay from what i hear and i love his voice. it is mesurmizing, soft, and he has that sound that i still love to hear everyday. you have your 80's music that people still listen to and think are the bomb. i loved the 80's and still and always will and i hope colin hay will keep singing till he can't no more. from what i hear greg hamm is still with him also so keep it up guys you still have a strong fan here

4 out of 5 stars New Wave Lite.......2004-09-25

So why were Men at Work so big, so everywhere at once, for a brief shining moment? In part, it's because they made "new wave" palatable for the milder set. Or, they countered "new wave" excess with low-key fun. (Apart from what's now called "new wave classics," there was a lot of shrill junk pumped out back then). Men at Work tunes were warm, humane, and catchy.

Their sound and wry perspective was wholly unique. Men at Work were a bit kooky, but normal too. It seemed to me that everyone liked them, but Men at Work weren't played at parties. They didn't cut loose, or inspire others to go crazy. Men at Work seemed more sunny hangin' out music.

Regarding the reviewer's claim (below) that Minogue has greater longevity (and gives others greater longevity ;-), why did Men at Work break up? Creative differences? Did Men at Work have that much creativity to have differences over? I don't know... but would love to see VH1 go for a reunite.

Okay, long story shorter: Men at Work's first album "Business as Usual" (1982) was huge, and the group's apex. I'm getting "Business", to unearth a time capsule. "Business" cleaned airwave clutter from saturation of post-disco synth, cold Brit-synth, and paint-by-numbers arena rock. And that's how Men at Work should be heard/remembered. So get "Business as Usual"... and get some Kylie Minogue posters... and dvd's. (She IS hot!)

1 out of 5 stars get any Kylie album instead.......2004-03-05

Riddle me this: how can you justify a greatest hits collection from a group that released only three albums? Like any typical one-hit-wonder, Men at Work peaked way too quickly in the 1980s, only to suffer a STEEP decline in sales after their second album. "Who Can it Be Now" and "It's a Mistake" were okay when they first came out, but now they sound dated. Kylie has lasted way longer than Men at Work and is still coming up with hit after hit. She is the best singer Australia has to offer, and you should get any of her albums instead.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2004-02-21

This band must have the record for ratio of compilation albums to actual studio albums. This is the 12th, yes 12th, "greatest hits" albums produced by/for the Men:

Essential Men At Work (2003) [US]
      Down Under (2001) [German]
      Super Hits (2000) [US]
      Brazil (1998) Live Concert
      Simply The Best (1998) [UK]
      It's A Mistake (1997) [German]
      Music Time (1997) [Italy]
Definitive Collection (1997) [German] *** The Best ***
      Contraband (1996) [Worldwide]
      Puttin' In Overtime (1995) [US]
      And Friends (1995) [Holland]
      The Works (1992) [Australia]
      '81-'85 (1989) [Various Countries]
      Two Hearts (1985) Studio Album
Live In SF (1984) DVD/VHS concert
      Cargo (1983) Studio Album
Business As Usual (1981) Studio Album

What's nice about this one is the remastering. CBS did a good job when the remastered Business As Usual and Cargo, and included some added track time. It's A Mistake contains the full track time deleted from the original release. Overall this collection contains mostly hits and very little album tracks.

If you're looking for one good "Greatest Hits", this would make a great one.

3 out of 5 stars Some Excellent Moments.......2006-01-04

Over the course of her last two solo albums, Anhedoniac (1998) and Disburden Disciple (2001), Jarboe has headed towards more succinct song structures and tighter rhythms. This has culminated in THE MEN ALBUM which contains some of her strongest material yet as well as a judicious and effective use of many guest musicians and singers. My only criticism of the album is that, at nearly 100 minutes, it is far too long and I think a tighter 1 hour album could have been released. Highlights include This Is Life Meridian, To Forget (with Iva Davies of all people), Reason To Live and the gorgeously minimal Penance. Overall, THE MEN is another fascinating chapter in the career of this courageous and compelling artist.

4 out of 5 stars Jarboe -- "One of the Guys".......2005-11-09

This is a compelling album, even more so on second listen and with good headphones. For me, there are two weakish tracks on Disc 2, but nothing to quibble about. And I did expect something more entrancing from the collab w/ Edward Ka-Spel, but what's here is nice, just sounds a bit phoned in. Expert singing throughout by all concerned, and another journey into the feral sounds to spice things up. The rhythms are very solid. She lets the men in, and for that I thank her. J's outlook continuing to get more "positive" in feel, not a bad thing. I think she still excels in the dark side, but also excels in making records worth buying. Good coherent production on this one as well.
