These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic. The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You." The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard. Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism. Album Description

In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.

"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."

To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.

Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.

Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.

Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.

A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.

Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21

Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.

Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!

This item is a must buy for all Vince Gill fans. We purchased it after seeing in Vince in concert. The concert was great, but you can't have that all the time. His range as a musician is evident throughout this 4 CD set. Plus, the musicians he surrounds himself with make this a must buy.

Who've thought that one of the most authentic rockabilly albums in recent years would come from the former STRAY CATS front man and neo-swing pioneer Brian Setzer? Not this DJ! Mr. Setzer has always been an accomplished and talented guitarist/singer, kind of like our "rockabilly ambassador" to the outside mainstream world, but in recent years you'd be hard pressed to find many of his songs on rockabilly playlists around our retro-rockin' scene. Not that any of his post-Cats material was pedestrian -far from that. It's just that his slick, effortless and oft-times `overproduced' studio sound seemed a bit out of sync with the more "traditional" sounds emanating from the modern rockabilly revival.

Now, I can't help but admit that I've dug the Stray Cats since day one -you might even say that they were an early, unseen hand nudging me towards this retro rockin' lifestyle. "Rockabilly Riot! Volume One: A Tribute To SUN Records" brings Brian full circle back to those early inspirations as he headed back to the hills -the Tennessee hills actually, to record a heartfelt, sparse and authentic paean to those artists and the songs of Sam Phillips little/big studio on Union Avenue in Memphis. Using just piano, sax and acoustic guitar (when necessary) to augment the traditional "SUN" rockabilly sound (electric guitar, standup bass and simple drums), Brian has not only created a near perfect rockabilly primer, but also a heartfelt testament to the quality and timeless brilliance of SUN Records. His commitment to the album's concept was even carried over to the equipment used: strictly vintage mics and reverb/echo created by an old 1800's era water cistern found behind the house! If you don't know what Rockabilly is or are just getting into it here, this is a great transition to hear Brian's versions of Classic songs that every Rockabilly player does.

"History of Rockabilly 101" little bit of a bore.......2006-05-24

Just like some classes, it sounds interesting and intriguing, but once you sign up it's not what you expected. So you suffer though the semester, endlessly kicking yourself for enrolling in a class that sounded good, but wasn't what you thought it would be.

It's not until well after you've graduated do you really appreciate the experience.

Riot seems a lot like that to me. The high level of detail in recreating some popular tunes of the 50's sounds initially interesting, but my first impression was one of disappointment. I was hoping Brian would kick it up a notch, add a little Ignition style fire into the recordings, but Mr. Setzer, like a school teacher had a certain agenda and he stuck with it. "That kind of style didn't exist in that erra," he would lecture the class.

I stick to my guns and really, really want Brian to make another over the top guitar record like Ignition, but at the same time, I have learned to appreciate this record for what it is. It is honestly a record that is unlike anything else in my collection.

I will probably begin to appreciate this record more as I grow older. For now, I never get tired of Brian's over the top mixture of jazz/blues/country/swing that has me dropping my jaw. I'm not interested in a tamer scaled down version...just yet. Maybe I will later.

So, whenever I feel like enrolling in Rockabilly school, I just pop this disc in.

A rockin' tribute .......2006-05-16

Rockabilly Riot, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Sun Records is a fantastic homage to some of the best American music ever recorded. Setzer's musicianship is top-notch; more proof that he's probably the best rockabilly (and swing) guitarist to ever live. His voice is golden, sounding much better than on some of his recent recordings of original material.

The album captures the energy and emotion of the Sun Records rockabilly classics, stays true to it, but improves on it with updated recording technology. The paradox is that the recordings are so clean, they lack a bit of the rawness of the 50's recordings.

Being a collection of covers, it has built-in limitations. When trying to pull something like this off, the artist is trapped between trying to bring something fresh to the material without straying too far from what made the songs great in the first place. Inject too much of yourself into someone else's song, and you're accused of heresy, betrayal. Introduce nothing new to the songs, and you're panned as boring and unoriginal. Setzer avoided the horns of that dilemma by revitalizing without ruining these classic songs.

Fans of the original Sun Records artists should be glad that the material is being re-introduced to the public in a very reverential way. Setzer fans should be pleased by the fire in his playing and singing. The songs are a lot of fun. Listening to this album reminded me of why early rock n' roll was so stirring, inspiring, energizing to that first generation of fans - something 50 years later we tend to take for granted.

Just "wow". Maybe "WOW".

Brian gathers a nice selection of rockabilly standards and covers them wonderfully. The Jordanaires join him on several songs, which really add to them. There isn't a song on here I don't like. I sense that Brian would have been perfectly content to have been around when rockabilly was being born.

Popular but not hip, basic but not shallow, rooted but not retro, Creedence Clearwater Revival distinguished themselves in the late 1960s and early 1970s through these contradictions. This six-disc set is the definitive Creedence collection, offering superbly remastered versions of all of their studio and live albums and adding a disc's worth of pre-Creedence material. The ultimate blue-collar rock band, John Fogerty and CCR found success by wholly giving in to their fascination with the American South (despite hailing from Northern California) and exploring the turf that connected R&B and country--the same turf that their heroes at Sun studios tilled at rock's birth. As the songs on the first disc prove, they hadn't always taken this approach though perhaps they should have: The first four songs from 1961 (by Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets), original compositions in the classic '50s rock & roll style they loved, hold up better than subsequent Golliwogs tracks that attempt to replicate the British Invasion sound in vogue at the time. Still, the Golliwogs tracks offer hints of John Fogerty's menacing growl and biting guitar that would fully blossom later on.

When diving into CCR's entire body of work, many myths dissipate and a more well-rounded view comes into focus: the quintessential singles band that dominated AM radio was also quite an album band, releasing solid records from top to bottom even though half of the songs were saturating radio long before the LP would hit. Also, they weren't quite as far removed from their Bay Area brethren (who were reared on the same roots music) as is often stated, offering a number of long and loose jams that, while not overtly psychedelic, gave them and their fans a chance to stretch out. Without question, though, CCR were the kings of the three-minute rock single, and it's these now-ubiquitous gems--the consummate AM band now dominates FM radio--that will always define them. --Marc Greilsamer

I recently purchased this box set and I LOVE it! This is definitely a MUST have for any hard-core Creedence Clearwater Revival fans because it contains all of their material including pre-Creedence music from "Tom Fogerty & The Blue Velvets" and "The Golliwogs."

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am always asked to write or discuss rock albums/bands from the 60's and 70's.

John Fogerty is a type of genius with a twist. He was able to invent an entire lifestyle about the American South/Southwest/Bayou- before he left Northern California.

There are only a handful of groups that must have a specific singer. CCR was one. Fogerty must take the microphone. Every word convinces you that he was born on the bayou. His guitar licks are tremendous and always fit the structure of the song.

If you heard people tell you that this release didn't have the sound quality they were looking for I would like to give a counter point of view. When CD's were first issued almost all of them lacked punch or a sound you felt to be warm and sincere. So many years after the fact almost all of the plants/record companies have corrected this. The quality is fine for the rock and roll it presents.

You'll love going through all the studio releases and understanding while numerous people thought of Fogerty as a hit writing machine (YES and very well) the CCR album output is terrific in its own right. The non radio songs are very powerful. Fogerty will take you through the swamp, sprinkle some blues, and pay homage to sounds of the 50's and 60's.

The most quintessential and definitive box set of the best short lived band.......2006-05-26

The Creedence Clearwater Revival box set is very much a mammoth enterprise in its own right. Containing all seven original albums and two live albums, not to mention a whole disc full of material from their stints as Tommy Fogerty & The Blue Velvets and The Golliwogs, this is very much a unique offer.

All tracks have been superbly remastered, thus salvaging their legacy for forthcoming generations. Once you possess this set, you need not even browse through the other compilations, since all of it is here, and a little bit more.

The undoubted highlight of the set is the first disc, focusing on the pre-Creedence period. The Blue Velvets singles make their debut appearance here (the most devout Creedence fan may have noticed that the third single is absent, because of its scarcity). The Golliwogs singles made their first appearance on vinyl on the 1975 Pre Creedence compilation, which also included the first single under the name of Creedence Clearwater Revival. To top it all off, there are even extra tracks among the singles that prior to this set never saw the light of day: "I Only Met You Just An Hour Ago", "She Was Mine", "Gonna Hang Around", "Instrumental #1", "Little Tina", and "Try Try Try", which in all sound a lot different compared to the Blue Velvets material, which harked back to '50s style rock'n'roll. Another additional treat is the "abandoned" single "Tell Me"/"You Can't Be True" (second version) that was never released; the disc finishes off with an Action USA radio promotional spot.

The B-side of the first Creedence single "Porterville", "Call It Pretending", opens Disc 2, which, up to Disc 5, focuses on the original Creedence albums until reaching Tracks 3 and 4 on Disc 5. Probably the rarest of gems in the Creedence catalog, "45 Revolutions Per Minute (Parts 1-2)" was originally a promo disc recorded in late 1970 and distributed to radio stations. It is basically a group interview interspersed with added effects (not to mention a very amusing sequence where John Fogerty can be heard speaking backwards!) and musical backdrops to boot. This particular track is as yet not available elsewhere. The remainder of Disc 5 and the sixth (and last) one display Mardi Gras plus the two live albums In Concert and Live In Europe (with additional tracks apparently taken from Live In Germany, which was recorded at the same time period as Live In Europe).

Along with the discs is a full booklet with extensive liner notes and a review for each album, by various writers and chroniclers. The Early Years (by Alec Palao), especially makes for very interesting reading, with additional input from Stu Cook and Doug Clifford discussing the olden days. The only major shame is that John Fogerty did not contribute to the reminiscences. One could assume (given the current situation between him and the others) that he was not very much interested in their early history. Simply by reading the booklet it could easily evoke memories of a bygone era, especially among those who grew up listening to Creedence in the late '60s; without doubt one of the best and most significant bands America could ever boost. Therefore this box set is a milestone on behalf of their enduring legacy which ever continues to inspire and beguile thousands or even millions wherever Creedence is known, played, and loved.

Love the completeness but disappointed in sound quality........2006-04-01

It's great to have all the CCR studio albums, and some of the more obscure stuff all in one package.

However, I already owned all the CCR studio albums, except Mardi Gras, on CD and was disappointed to find that these "remastered" CDs didn't sound any better than the individual CDs that I bought many years ago (and since gave to a friend). (And, I was listening on a system that is beyond anything you'll find at these consumer electronic superstores. I can hear it whan remastering is done correctly.)

Bayou Country is the CCR record that slips under the radar. The group's 1969 sophomore release birthed two classic-rock staples--"Born on the Bayou" and "Proud Mary." Even though "Proud Mary" might be CCR's staple, "Bayou Country" contains some of CCR's best work, along with the other tracks on this album that are not in Classic Rock Radios regular rotation. "Bootleg" and "Graveyard Train" and "Keep on Chooglin" are three of my favorite CCR songs, and the others are are excellent themselves. Shame on you if you dont have this masterpiece in your collection. If you interested in becoming more familar with CCR's work, forget "Chronicles" Start here!

Uneven - pick up Cosmo's Factory or Green River instead........2006-11-04

Okay, this record at least gets off to a great start: the rockin' slice of self-mythology Born on the Bayou and the underrated Bootleg. Then it takes a complete u-turn, with the murky, meandering, uninteresting jam Graveyard Train. And it remains in that u-turn, first on a dull cover of Little Richard's Good Golly, Miss Molly, then with the equally forgettable Penthouse Pauper. Proud Mary (most certainly the best thing on this disc) comes along and saves the day, but it's only temporary - things close with an even less interesting jam, Keep on Chooglin'. At least Graveyard Train has interesting lyrics...
But there are some upsides. The aforementioned Proud Mary cooks, a merger of soul, gospel, rock and country. And who could forget the "World, keep on turnin'/Proud Mary keep on burnin'/Rollin', rollin', rollin' down the river" refrain? Not me, that's for sure. Born on the Bayou is another one of the centerpiece tracks and most certainly their best song not to be released as a single. And Bootleg is their best album track, a lost little gem that's actually worth buying the album for. It's uneven, but the three good tracks make it worth a look.

When I was just a little boy ... I smashed a bookcase with a broomstick playing "Born On The Bayou" on the air guitar. And still, 35 years later, I still get very excited when hearing the intro of that song. "Born On The Bayou" is by far the best song on this album (much better than "Proud Mary" for instance), any album with this song on it deserves 5 stars. "Bootleg", "Graveyard Train" and "Keep On Chooglin'" are too long and a bit boring, the other songs are of solid Creedence Quality.

I misplaced this old soundtrack and was able to purchase another on Amazon.com. This is a great soundtrack and the music is terrific. This is one soundtract you should add to your collection. I've purchased several cd's and products in general from Amazon and have never been disspointed.

A great soundtrack with noticable omissions.......2006-01-16

La Bamba (1987.) The soundtrack to the Ritchie Valens biopic of the same name.

INTRODUCTION:
In 1987, the film La Bamba, based on the life and times of fifties pop-rock star Ritchie Valens, was released. The film cast Lou Diamond Phillips as the classic musician, and told his story, from his rise to fame, right down to his young and tragic death. For the film, Los Lobos, a fairly popular act of the day, was asked to rerecord classic Valens material for the movie. Some other moderately popular musicians who portrayed other musicians of the same era depicted in the film also provided recordings for the film. So, how is the soundtrack? Read on, and find out!

OVERVIEW:
The La Bamba soundtrack was released in 1987, around the same time as the film of the same name. Contributors to the soundtrack include Los Lobos, Howard Huntsberry, Marshall Crenshaw, Brian Setzer, and Bo Diddley. The A-Side of the soundtrack sonsists of the Los Lobos covers of the Ritchie Valens songs La Bamba, Come On Lets Go, Ooh My Head, We Belong Together, Framed, and Donna. The B-Side consists of the other artists' covers, which include Howard Huntsberry's cover of Jackie Wilson's Lonely Teardrops, Marshall Crenshaw's cover of Buddy Holly's Crying Waiting Hoping, Brian Setzer's cover of Eddie Cochran's Summertime Blues, Bo Diddley's remake of his own classic tune Who Do You Love, and the two songs Los Lobos recorded for the film which were not remakes, Charlena and Goodnight My Love.

REVIEW:
Awesome movie, awesome soundtrack. I'm a huge fan of the music of Ritchie Valens, and for the most part, La Bamba proved to be an efficient and entertaining retelling of the Valens saga. Aside from some omitted material (which I'll get to later), the soundtrack is every bit as good as the film it represents. Read on for my reviews of the tracks.

-SIDE A-

-La Bamba by Los Lobos: Los Lobos covers the track that took Ritchie Valens to the top of the musical world. Being a folk song, no one ever thought a rock and roll version would do well - Valens proved the non-believers wrong! Los Lobos does a great cover of it, too. The band actually did two versions of the song for the movie - a rendition of the slower, folksier version by the bar band that convinced Valens to cover the song himself, as well as the classic version Valens did. This is the classic Valens version. I wish they had included both versions of the soundtrack, though (although an instrumental sequence near the end of this version DOES reprise elements of the folk-type version. Still, I wanted BOTH versions as complete, separate tracks!)

-Come On Lets Go by Los Lobos: This classic rockabilly-style cut was another huge hit for Ritchie Valens. Los Lobos creates a fine rendition of the classic cut, staying true to the Valens original while at the same time adding their own spin onto things. All in all, another great song.

-Ooh My Head by Los Lobos: Not much to say about this one. Once again, Los Lobos manages to create an excellent version of one of the many classic Valens tunes people know and love him for. Every song on this soundtrack is excellent, and this one is no exception.

-We Belong Together by Los Lobos: Ah, the classic Valens love song. Although its success was pretty much ousted by the better known ballad Donna, this one was still a fairly notable hit for Valens. The Los Lobos take on the ballad is a damn good one - but I shouldn't have to tell you that, now should I?

-Framed by Los Lobos: Of all of the Ritchie Valens song that Los Lobos revisited in La Bamba, this one is the least well known. That's a shame, because it's a great song! The song takes a classic blues styling, and puts a rockabilly spin on it. Once again, Los Lobos does a marvelous cover version of the song.

-Donna by Los Lobos: This song was so big a hit for Ritchie Valens initially, that his only song even on the same plane of popularity is La Bamba. The classic ode Valens wrote to his high school girlfriend proved to be the stuff that has withstood the test of time. And I know you're probably getting tired of me saying this for every song, but Los Lobos really does a good job on here.

-SIDE B-

-Lonely Teardrops by Howard Huntsberry: In La Bamba, Howard Huntsberry portrayed the classic soul singer Jackie Wilson. And here, Huntsberry reprises Wilson's signature tune. This is classic soul at its very best. Prior to seeing La Bamba, I had never even heard of Huntsberry. But the real shocker is that I ended up liking this version of the song more than the original! Definitely a solid, underrated cut.

-Crying Waiting Hoping by Marshall Crenshaw: Marshall Crenshaw, a fairly popular eighties pop signer, managed to land the role of Buddy Holly in La Bamba. Holly, of course, was killed in the same plane crash that claimed the life of Ritchie Valens. Buddy Holly is a tough guy to cover, but Marshall Crenshaw does a damn good job of it. I personally prefer this version over Holly's original (and that's saying a lot since I LOVE Buddy Holly!) If you're interested in hearing Crenshaw cover another Holly tune, check out the remastered version of his 1982 self-titled debut - he covers Rave On on there as a bonus track.

-Summertime Blues by Brian Setzer: Long before Brian Setzer gained any real fame, he played Eddie Cochran in La Bamba, covering the song that made that man a rockabilly legend. Here's another one of those covers that is so good, I like it more than the original. Definitely worthwhile listening - but then again, isn't every song on here?

-Who Do You Love by Bo Diddley: Bo Diddley himself did this song originally so very long ago, and was asked to rerecord it for La Bamba. He did, and the end results are solid. Diddley is a legend of the blues, and this recording is just a small sample of why so many people feel that way. It just a shame that the version of this song most people remember is the George Thorogood one, because Diddley's version is the song the way it was meant to be heard.

-Charlena by Los Lobos: In addition to the Ritchie Valens covers, Los Lobos recorded two new songs for the La Bamba soundtrack. This is the first of the two. Essentially, this here is a neo-rockabilly track of sorts, and a damn good one too. Long after the fifties music scene died out, Los Lobos still managed to record a song that suited the style perfectly.

-Goodnight My Love by Los Lobos: Here's the second of the newly-recorded Los Lobos songs done for the soundtrack. What we have here is one of those classic fifties-style rock ballads that were so popular back then. If you're into that sort of thing, you're going to love this song - I know I do!

-OTHER COMMENTS-
Omissions are the biggest problem with this soundtrack, by far. As I previously stated, only one version of La Bamba is on here - not both versions from the film. Another omission is Sleepwalk, the classic Santo And Johnny instrumental that shows up frequently in the film. Its omission is likely due to the fact that it wasn't recorded just for the film, but still, I miss it. And then there's the issue of Rip It Up, the classic Ritchie Valens rockabilly tune he first plays with his band in their garage, early on in the film. This was one of my favorite songs in the film, and I was devastated not to see it on here. And where's the Big Bopper's Chantilly Lace? I rated this soundtrack four stars instead of five because of omissions. If these songs had been on here, it would be five stars all the way.

OVERALL:
Overall, despite my issues with the omitted songs, I am very satisfied with the La Bamba soundtrack. Much like the movie, it's an excellent experience all the way through. If you liked the movie, or you're just into this sort of music, the soundtrack is well worth owning. Highly recommended!

EDITION NOTES:
This soundtrack is becoming increasingly more difficult to find on compact disc, implying it may be very gradually going out of print. Take my advice - if you want it, just buy it online. It's the fastest, easiest way to get it.

Yo no soy marinero........2004-09-27

This is a solid soundtrack. Los Lobos do a good job of duplicating Ritchie Valens' old songs (although there was no accordion on the original versions). The other cover songs, by Howard Huntsberry, Marshall Crenshaw and Brian Setzer, are also well done. Bo Diddley does a great remake of his classic "Who Do You Love". The last two songs by Los Lobos are not Ritchie Valens songs, but they are okay. If you liked the movie, you will probably like the soundtrack, too.

RnR Reverence.......2003-07-08

Los Lobos got their big break when they were asked to re-record (and mime for the movie) a number of Ritchie Valens' biggest hits for this soundtrack, and the production and performances are nothing short of fantastic.

I give it only 4 stars however, because they are covers, and respect must be paid to those stars who came up with them in the first place. But Marshall Crenshaw, who's presently one of rock's premiere songwriters, ably tackles Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping", while Brian Setzer (wayyy before swing came back in a big way) seems the natural choice to cover Eddy Cochran's "Summertime Blues".

Weight is lent by having Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" performed by the man himself, but cover versions or not, the ripped-up, crumpled dollar-bills I used to pay for this album way back when was one of the best investments I ever made.

I was a Stray Cats' fan back in the day, and liked the song that was used in the GAP commercial, and wanted to get this 2 disk set after hearing part of it on classic rock. Definitely worthwhile, and it's not a real greatest hits, but each disk is from a concert, the first at Montreal at the start of the tour, the other at Tokyo at the end of their tour in the early 90's. A good combo of Stray Cats hits, older songs (Route 66, Get me to the Church on Time). Great use of horns to supplement a rocking sound. A great addition to my collection!

Crank up the volume and close your eyes baby!.......2004-11-17

There is NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING like the BSO live in concert, but this collection is as close as you can get to the absolute bliss, power, and pure adrenaline of BSO in person.

It is also a chance to experience the growth and polishing of the band over the years. Disk One seems to have a slightly odd sound mix and is a little rough around the edges. I don't recall that from the concert, but memory fades with age...and it was just such a thrill to see and hear people make such amazing music! Thank you Brian!!!

I do, however distinctly remember the Phoenix concert that was similar to Disk Two...and this is pretty darn close. Brian's musical and vocal talent is truly a gift. It is reproduced beautifully with all of the highs, lows, growls, and yodels! Bernie Dresel is amazing as usual. He is the king of drummers and has some great features on Disk 2 that will confound and bewilder anyone who understand what it takes to produce that percussion.

Since you can't buy a lifetime of live BSO concerts (too bad), buy this collection. It is a totally different experience than the studio albums and worth every cent!

Little Richard on "I Feel Pretty" alone is worth the price........2007-06-08

Bought the CD through Amazon after hearing the Little Richard cut, "I Feel Pretty". Playing to type, LR gives one of his all time best performances. This cut alone is worth the price of CD.

The rest of the CD - fair (Tevin Campbell - poor song choice for his otherwise cooool voice) to good (Selena - expected better) to outstanding (Aretha)

I found this to be a really neat way to introduce younger generations to this classic Broadway show.

I would love to see more R&B versions of Broadway hits.

A contemporary , edgy version worth buying!.......2005-09-19

This is a welcome, edgy adaptation of the classic songs of West Side Story. While the original version brought the concept of inner-city gangs to the consciousness of middle America, it was necessarily sterilized to make the message more palatable.

THESE versions of the familiar songs help us imagine the reality... the tension, the passion, the despair, and the love.

Fresh sounds for a new audience, this will be enjoyed by long-time West Side champions, as well.

Self-indulgent crap.......2004-05-07

There are a few high points to this disc which I suppose make it worth owning, but on the whole I find it extemely off-putting. "Somewhere" will bring tears to your eyes, but, alas, the producer seemingly didn't have the balls to tell AF to wrap it up--and so it becomes tedious, the opposite of tasteful self-restraint. And Patti LaBelle? Well, she is the patron saint of masturbatory yammering. On the other hand, Brian Setzer cuts loose on "Jet Song" in a way that'd be certain to put a smile on the face of Mr. Bernstein. There are some nice interpretations, but all in all, it has an inorganic, overproduced, Yamaha DX7'y sound.

What a fabulous collection of re-interpretations of these classic songs!
I take my hat off to David Pack for doing such a fantastic job on the arrangements. I just can't praise this CD enough! I wish the label had done more to promote this recording! All the artists did an amazing job on their vocals and instrumentation.
My favorites are : Selena, Michael McDonald/ James Ingram, Kenny Loggins/Wynonna, Patti Austin, Aretha Franklin,Tevin Campbell and Trisha Yearwood.
This is a great CD for any collection. It's a terrific way to expose your children to real music!

This was the debut album by Creedence Clearwater Revival. It established their highly original sound, which was a lot different than any of the other bands that came out of the San Francisco scene (like CCR did). While they did have their sound down, John Fogerty's songwriting wasn't quite as good as it would later be. It's notable that the two chart singles from the album, "Suzie Q" and "I Put a Spell On You" are covers of songs from the '50s (by two guys named Hawkins who were of no relation to each other). The other cover song on the album was the more recent "Ninety-Nine and a Half" by Wilson Pickett. John Fogerty's original songs are good, but he got ever better as he went along. The best original song on the album, in my opinion, is "Walk on the Water", which Tom Fogerty co-wrote with John. This song actually dates from the pre-Creedence days, when the band was known as the Golliwogs. This is a very good album by CCR, but the best was yet to come.

Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968.) Creedence Clearwater Revival's first album.

It was in 1968 that the classic southern rock legends Creedence Clearwater Revival (C.C.R. for short) released their debut album, which was self-titled. Although the members of the band had been recording material as early as a decade before the release of the album, this was the band that was going to bring them the fame and fortune they deserved. But how does the band's debut album measure up? Is it a masterpiece of an album, well ahead of its time, or is a rough and uneven debut? Read on for my review.

Although this is Creedence Clearwater Revival's first album, it doesn't really sound any better or worse than the band's future releases. It's very rare that a band gets their sound right on their very first album, but Creedence pulls it off. The album combines cover songs with original compositions. The cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' I Put A Spell On You is nothing short of excellent. It's hard to believe the band could take a song that predated rock and roll, and make it better, but they do! John Fogerty's vocals here are priceless. Another cover song worth mentioning is Susie Q. They breathe new life into the song, and it shows - this became their most popular cover song by far. And this album is the only place where you can find the full-length uncut version (hits compilations usually butcher this one down to about half the original length.) And, of course, who could forget their cover of Ninety-Nine And A Half? The band's blues rock sound on this song is nothing short of excellent. Any band that can take old songs like these and make them better than the originals is an instant classic rock legend, in my eyes. But let's not forget about the band's original compositions! The Working Man is NOT the same song Rush would record about six years later - this is a VERY DIFFERENT song. It's probably the song most listeners can relate to - A man works so hard that he's never experienced anything else in life. The slower-paced and appropriately-titled Gloomy is also excellent. The band closes the album with Walk On The Water, one of their finest compositions. You should always end an album with a memorable song so that you may leave a lasting impression - and here Creedence does just that.

It's very rare that a band gets their sound right from the very beginning, but Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the few. And this was only the beginning of things to come for the soon-to-be classic rock legends. Although their career would be short, they would release a number of excellent albums, all of which would be well-received by their fans. If you're into classic southern rock, this album is essential.

Great Rockabilly!.......2003-03-16

Lee Rocker sounds great. Modern rockabilly but reminiscent of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran with a punch. Great guitar playing by Brophy Dale really makes this cd outstanding, he is excellent. I highly recommend.
