5 out of 5 stars My favorite Author.......2007-04-06

Every thing this man does is gold to me! I can't get enough.

3 out of 5 stars you simply must read this.......2005-08-19

i'm going to review this as i listen through for the first time, so here we go...

ok, i'm about two thirds way through the album now and have yet o find anything to write about, although i'm not sure if this is because it's so good that it takes my words from me and casts them away like useless toys, or because its so unremarkable that i haven't been able to write about it. onward anyway, play...

ok so now the albums played through, i'mn still not sure. i mean it sounds as if it might be genius, some swanseaic masterpiece lurking under the sounds of a hillbilly elevator album, yet i can't shake the feeling that this doesn't mean much at all, as if he's sat down and thought, i can write music, and guess what i own a guitar, so hey i must be bob dylan or something...

arggh, i've just pressed play again, and it is annoying the hell out of me. i cannot understand why this is, it was perfectly unoffensive last time, i mean, i couldn't even think of anything to say about it, but now everytime he brushes his fingers over his guitar string, it feels as if he's diggin' a skrewdriver into my spine, or running a cheese grater up and down my shin.

his voice is that of a preteen whizzing on too much pop, this instrumentation is frankly amaturish and the arrangement would sound better, and more interesting if it was done by grade school kids...

ok, after one last listen through, my fourth in total, i think that maybe, as someone great once said, if you like this sort of thing, then this is the sort of thing you'll like. and that the point of it, really, it's as comercial as anything i've heard pumped out by those idiot tv shows and hidden behind a soft focus cover photo of a long haired fool, who's just producing this, with little or no artistic intent, to make money.

5 out of 5 stars Reinvention is good!.......2002-01-03

When I'm in a bad mood, I put on Joshua Kadison. I can't help it, his music and lyrics just make me feel GOOD. Mr. Kadison seems to be constantly reinventing himself. PDS was a very "pop" collection, where as DB was extremely "gospel" and "jazz" sounding. I absolutely love THIS CD. It has the best of both of the previous releases, and a couple of new tracks. If you enjoy songs that tell a story, then you will certainly enjoy this collection.

5 out of 5 stars two great albums, for the price of one.......2001-07-27

I bought PDS when it came out many years ago, and then kind of forgot about Joshua, I wasn't even aware when Delilah Blue was released, so when I heard about Vanishing America, it got me looking for what he'd done in the interim. I was shocked when I heard DB did so badly that it was deleted, so when I heard about this collection I ordered it immediately. The first half is PDS, the second DB, with I think two new songs. Now, the two halves are too different to compare, which is probably why DB did so badly. I think its great. Rather than put out another Jessie, or Beautiful..., he put out totally different songs. I would definitely recommend this album, and buy Vanishing America too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction To Jennifer Rush.......2003-04-19

If you don't own any of Jennifer's music from the 90's this is a great place to start, esp. considering most of the albums are imports that can be a little pricey! This is a collection of songs from her EMI Electrola albums "Jennifer Rush" (there is also an album from the 80's titled "Jennifer Rush"), "Out Of My Hands" and "Credo". This album contains all of the singles (hard to find radio versions) as well as several other songs from those albums. Jennifer has always had an amazing voice, but like any artist, her voice and her sound changed over the years. Her voice just continues to mature and gain depth and she knows how to deliver a song. You will hear a different Jennifer in these recordings vs. any early work from the 80's. Although she is American and lives in NYC, Jenny is very popular in Europe and especially in German speaking countries. Her voice can be slightly operatic at times and is totally unique (which I love) but I guess that doesn't always totally fit in with "American" radio. I love the fact that her music (the range is shown on this CD) moves from dance-pop, to power ballads, to rock with heavy guitar all effortlessly even though you don't always hear a voice such as hers do those types of music. She has also recorded a bit in Spanish for releases in Spain and this compilation also includes the Spanish language version of the single "Credo"

3 out of 5 stars EMI Records Set Captures 90's Palmer.......2003-11-17

This EMI Reccords collection is a 90's only (for the most part) collection of minor hit singles and album cuts from Robert Palmer, most in his trademark dance savvy hard rock style. The material ranges from 1988 to 1994 and is strictly from previous Palmer albums on the EMI label so there's no "Addicted To Love", "Bad Case Of Loving You", or other popular 70's and 80's hits as well as no material from the singer's more recent R&B flavored releases. Highlights include a powerful rendition of Otis Redding's "Dreams To Rememnber" and two minor UK hits "Know By Now" and the ballad "You Blow Me Away". Palmer recruits Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt for a raucous rendidtion of the formerly tame Devo hit "Girl U Want" and gets former Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens to juice up Palmer's own "Can't Get Enough Of A Good Thing". US fans will recognize the grammy wining hit "Simply Irresistible" and UK fans will remember "She Makes My Day" but other singles releases are excluded in favor of album cuts. A decent if not great collection highlighting a small portion of Robert Palmer's career.

4 out of 5 stars a must for Robert Palmer and Devo fans!.......2001-05-15

This CD is necessary, even if you only get it for Robert Palmer's amazing rendition of the Devo classic, "Girl U Want".

Of the Pussycat Gold collection my all time favorite is "Georgie" which I have been looking for for more than 30 years. This is my song - reminds me of 1976 when I was in love with my first love. Georgie is sharp, romantic and sensual. Just finding this song in this collection make this pt of gold a worhtwhile collection for any lover of of great 70 songs.

          5 out of 5 stars a classic album.......2005-08-02

Pussycat's Single Hit Collection is a classic album that deserves far more recognition both at the time of the vinyl release and now the CD. The group of girl singers from Holland harmonize as well as the Beach Boys ever did in their heyday. The songs are sentimental, hopeful, joyous and sad all at the same time with Mississippi and My Broken Souvenirs being the stand-out tracks. However the remaining tracks are only slightly behind making this CD a true treasure in your collection of Seventies music.

5 out of 5 stars Dutch pop group sing about Mississippi.......2005-04-02

Pussycat were a pop group (four men, three women) from the Netherlands whose music was (for the most part) mainstream seventies pop, mainly recorded in English. They wrote most of their own material but they also recorded a few covers including It's the same old song (Four Tops). They recorded a well-balanced mix of up-tempo and slower songs.

Their claim to fame is a country-styled up-tempo pop song that they wrote about the American heartland - Greenville, Mississippi to be exact. They released the song in the UK, where Dutch pop singers had no previous record of success, and took it all the way to the top of the charts, knocking Dancing queen (Abba) off the top. It sat there for four weeks, eventually being replaced by another classic (If you leave me now - Chicago). In America, Barbara Fairchild, a country singer who learned about Pussycat's song on a visit to Europe, covered the song. Her version became a minor hit on the country charts but deserved to do much better.

Pussycat never repeated the success of Mississippi in the UK, though the follow-up, Smile, made the top thirty. Other songs that I particularly like include Georgie and If you ever come to Amsterdam, though another of my favorite Pussycat tracks (Mexicali lane) is missing from this particular compilation.

Pussycat are not essential to a collection of seventies music but there is more to their music than Mississippi.

4 out of 5 stars A fan of rock, country etc.......2003-09-11

I think one of the best CD's from Pussycat.
I bought this CD for the track: Teenage Queenie.
Most people know Mississippi, Georgie is some of that kind.
My broken souvenirs is sensitive music.
Hey Joe is country-like and my favorite Teenage Queenie is
kind of slow rock. Really varied music.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated, inventive, ambitious, intelligent. Classic........2005-05-10

I like the entire City to City album. I think every single song on it is good, not a bad one in the bunch.

Of course I love Baker Street. There is a lot going on in that track, sophisticated and excellent. Comparing it with the (obscenely bad) Foo Fighters cover shows both the weaknesses of the Fighters' arrangement as well as the talent, polish, intelligence, and diligence of Rafferty's producer.

I personally don't like solo sax much and so it doesn't touch me as much as it seems to touch others, but even so I can see that the sax intro and other sax parts are electrifying. I respect this production choice because for so many people the sax is the only part of the song they identify and according to some reviews the sax bought most of that copious radio air-time in 1978. On the other hand, it's a shame to see this overstated sound overshadow the rest of the beautiful song in peoples' minds.

The swooping guitars are awesome and yet subtle and fill a crucial spot in the intro melody. The guitar solo is masterful. Much of the time in the solo is taken up with only a few sustained and repeated notes and the bulk of the solo is made up of bends, trills, swoops, dives, and inventive tremelos. Each note of the minimal note count speaks out to us in important ways. It reminds me of lyrics that say volumes with only a few words. It's one of my all time favorite guitar solos.

The two featured analog synthesizer sounds are way cool. The synth during the verse sounds like falling leaves or water. The bass synth sound that counterpoints the vocal during the chorous, again, is inventive: an interesting, unusual sound, delightful instrumental melodic counterpoint to the vocal, a melodic sound in this region of the bass territory is also unusual in pop. You usually have the bass drum and the bass guitar in the bass region and that's about it. This synth sound and melody is something like a `cello line, lending an orchestral feel while still using pop instruments.

The lyrics to Baker Street are good, but I wouldn't say great. They give an overall impression of loneliness, futility and yearning for something better in the future. What's there is good but it's not great because the song does not tell a complete story. This is a concept album and every lyric addresses these issues of loneliness and itinerant living on the road. Considering the entire album's lyrics as a whole pushes them up a notch as ambitious, intelligent, very good, and maybe you could consider the whole as a complete story. They fall short of something blisteringly great like "Eleanor Rigby" (The Beatles) or "She Always a Woman" or "AllenTown" (Billy Joel).

Regarding the Foo Fighters' cover version: The Foo Fighters skip the swooping guitars during the intro melody and you can hear it as dead space, causing a drop in intensity there resulting in an undesirable volume pumping effect. The Fighters copy the guitar solo note for note, what's the point? We've heard that already, and much better, so why bother? Granted I'm not that familiar with post 1989 Pearl Jam clone musical styles so I might be missing something, but to me the Fighters' guitar version of the sax intro melody is just plain wrong. The rhythm is wrong and corny, the accents are in the wrong place, and the guitar sound is so anemic when compared to the sax. Why would a band of the Fighters' stature cover a song anyway? The whole thing is just wrong.

4 out of 5 stars SUBLIME SOFT ROCK.......2003-05-25

Everyone must be familiar with Baker Street, Rafferty's massive 1978 hit with its soulful sax and poetic lyrics. This collection includes other hits like the more uptempo Right Down The Line, the title track of his City To City album and the beautiful flowing Night Owl. It's a pity his brilliant song Shipyard Town has been omitted as it's also very melodic and memorable. His voice is not unlike that of Paul Simon and his style pretty much in the singer-songwriter or soft rock genre, like Simon's early solo work or like James Taylor. The arrangements are always graceful and elegant, ensuring a brilliant interplay between his laid-back voice and the instruments. If you like gentle soft rock, you'll love this collection of exquisite songs.
