3 out of 5 stars not quite frank.......2006-03-16

If imitation is the best form of flattery, then Frank Sinatra would be flattered -- perhaps. A not-so-bad attempt to capture that smooth, upbeat groove-a-la-Frank, although at some points I was almost expecting the music to stop and someone to say "hey, just kidding!" But I was tapping my foot alot - and they say that's good for the foot muscles.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime and much overlooked retro band.......1998-08-03

The Lucky Strikes don't seem to be partaking in the fame enjoyed by other retro swing groups, and it's hard to know why. What you have here is 100% originality, with all-new tunes that remind you of Sinatra from his middle period, but which are actually much better. The band is blessed with a great vocalist and an outstandingly cool style. The music is more elegant than the jump swing of other groups in this genre, and even on their fast numbers (One More Thing), they still manage to sound laid back. Let's face it: there are times when the Cherry Poppin' Daddies are just too much, the SNZ too rattling, and it's too late for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the like. That's when this essential addition to the swing library is wholly perfect. You'll return to it again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Raise Your Fist.......2005-12-29

It's good to see that there are new bands keeping the true metal flag flying. Not the loincloth and broadsword variety, but the denim and studded wristband style of metal, with its galloping riffs, blistering solos, and occult-inspired lyrics. Surprisingly enough, America seems to be leading the charge, with bands like Pharaoh, Icarus Witch, and of course Widow.
This North Carolina band rocks like it's 1985 and they're gunning for a spot on the latest Metal Massacre compilation. Widow embraces the classic metal sound, owing much of their style to early Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Armored Saint, and Omen albums. The addition of some aggressive screaming vocals - like 3 Inches of Blood, though far less frequent (and far less annoying) - keeps the album from sounding totally dated. A good point of comparison would be Sweden's Wolf, as they have a similar vocal style and share a deep appreciation for classic metal.
If you long for metal's glory days and are ready to raise your fist for METAL, then Widow is the band for you.

5 out of 5 stars Widow should come to Japan.......2005-06-17

I have listened to both their demo album and current Midnight Strikes album. They play very progressive solos with dark feelings behind the music. I believe there is a new album coming up soon. This is a MUST for the fans out there... The sound (neo-classical and heavy metal) will definitely be a great hit in Europe and Japan. All my friends here in Japan loves them!

5 out of 5 stars Huge Widow Fan.......2004-11-26

This band Rocks. This is the truest form of metal. They are just as good live as they are on the record. It is very 80's however which may not appeal to some metal fans but overall these guys are very talented and this album rocks. Shreading solos and awesome vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Leave No Stone Unturned.......2003-11-26

I havent heard Midnight Strikes yet, but 5 of the tracks were on a demo the band released while still under the moniker of The Widow's Lust, given to me by Cris Bennett.
Widow is the remnants of a Raleigh band named Sorrow Bequest who played a mix of Iron Maiden inspired guitar dueling (they actually had 3 guitarists) and death metal. The band became Widow, and hooked up with Leadfoot, ex False Prophet drummer Tim Haisman, who appears on Midnight Strikes.
The music is great heavy metal, VERY 80's metal.
