Product Description
The aptly titled Lost in a Moment is Shrift's first album, but it's hardly a debut for the group's two members, singer/songwriter Nina Miranda and multi-texturalist/producer Dennis Wheatley. Miranda is a charter member of the celebrated British group Smoke City, which has scored European hits with its unique blend of bossa nova, trip hop, jazz, reggae and funk. Miranda has lent her unique voice and words to projects by such world music luminaries as Bebel Gilberto, Nitin Sawhney, Daniel Jobim, Jah Wobble and Da Lata. She is equally comfortable singing in English, Portuguese or French, and she shifts between those languages several times during the course of Lost in a Moment.

Miranda was introduced to her musical partner Dennis Wheatley shortly after completing the second Smoke City album. Wheatley is best known for his work with Atlas, a British electro band with a history of taking existing elements (Brazilian singers, string quartets, Randy Newman's "Baltimore") and whipping them up into delectably, danceably new ethno-electro mixtures. Miranda was familiar with his work under the Atlas moniker and was drawn in by what she calls the "depth of atmosphere and quality of sound." She found his work "cinematic and otherworldly," and in short order the two were building songs together.

The mood on Lost in a Moment is, as the album’s title suggests, generally dreamy and soft, almost mystical at times, but with a worldly and modern edge. However, the project has plenty of upbeat, funky moments as well. Consider "To the Floor" a song that places Miranda’s cool and carefree vocals atop Wheatley’s funky breakbeats, big band and orchestral sounds, and handclaps before lapsing into a dubwise section that interweaves multiple vocal tracks and instrumental drama before ending with an impressionistic wash of aural colors.

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price.The sound quality is decent,however it is not great.This set will not provide you with the crisp,clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

Music's hidden angel shines for a third time.......2006-01-15

Lene Marlin is my favourite musician, period. In an English-language market dominated by the Americans and Brits, the best artist is really one for whom English is not her mother tongue. But she brings a gentle, soulful Norwegian touch to the English language, and the two cultures and vibes blend beautifully to produce something truly rich.

A couple of tracks on her third album, on first listen, may sound like humdrum commercial pop. But give it more time and you'll find that songs like "My Lucky Day" and "How Would It Be" possess an emotional honesty and depth that lift them above the ordinary. And they have grown on me; now they are very special songs too.

Most songs on the album are very good; but the best songs are an absolute masterclass. "Leave My Mind" is oceans deep and undulating in its elegant sadness and fluid rhythm. The guitar playing is excellent and unusual in its feel as well. The beat is fascinating as it features an occasional skip, and the way Lene wraps her voice and soul around the words "If I" in the chorus is luxuriant.

'If I...
had a choice I'd leave it all behind'

"All I Can Say" features a rich guitar sound that conjures a glorious sun that soon becomes accompanied by a few thoughtful clouds. It sees Lene at her most tender, albeit a more mature tenderness than before. She lingers on the notes in the chorus with that familiar theme of guilt for breaking someone's heart inadvertently -- but it is guilt awash with tenderness, unlike earlier guilt-laden songs like "Maybe I'll Go" and "Unforgivable Sinner".

"When You Were Around" is an unplugged-style song, just guitar and voice, a style in which Lene excels. Its sheer simplicity of melody and lyric stand out in the increasingly complicated music and world of today. You feel like you're in Lene's garage, and she's playing and singing on a lazy, rainy Saturday afternoon -- just for you.

"Hope You're Happy" is another of my favourites on the record. It is another walk on love's dark shores by Lene, and her lyrics are exquisitely simple, yet rich in meaning and feelng. Much ambivalence and irony lie in the words:

'I'm sorry that I could not be
As perfect as you wanted me
Just wondering, what's going on in your
mind
I sure hope you're fine
I hope your conscience is clear
Hope you're happy'

No one makes sadness more beautiful than Lene Marlin. It is redemptive music by an artist who has the rare courage to truly bare her soul and share her deepest hurts to contemplative people who love music, and love honesty.

Different but not bad.......2005-10-17

The intro of 'My Lucky Day' was a sign straight away that this album is going to sound different from her previous work. I actually like the ta-ra-ta, it's very catchy. Of course 'How Would It Be' is a heavy favorite. The first 2 albums of Lene which were 'Playing My Game' and 'Another Day' were both mellow and sometimes melancholic. This third effort has more of a kick to it, more pop and mainstream. I'm not one of those people who go against the mainstream, I love pop! While a lot of fans have expressed disapproval of the more rock sounding Lene, I think it's a commendable effort. Lene has a more powerful voice than most of her songs let on. When she sings sweetly, she is at her best but that doesn't mean she has to sing the same thing over and over again. While 'Lost in a Moment' is still inferior to 'Playing My Game' I think it's up there at least with 'Another Day.'

The problem with this album..........2005-09-28

...is that the hit of "Lost in a moment" titled "How would it be" is so promising, and it's another stunning composition where Lene is playing on safe strings (-and her skills in songwrititng indeed shines through) that it is nearly impossible not to feel a bit let down by the rest of the material on this rather poor album. I admire Lene as both a performer and a songwriter, and I really wanted to like this album. But, to be honest, this is boring. And perhaps the worst; So average as in list-pop. She does not sound matured, it sounds as if this release was completed way too fast. And what a shame. Her previous "Another day" (a much better album, and far more "Lene") did not turn out to be the comeback the fans had hoped for. But it sounded of a higher effort than "Lost in a moment", and was at least a worthy "sequel" to the fantastic "Playing my game". Lene has a certain style, a natural and beautiful voice -and her writing is full of personality and charm. Of course it is important for every artist to develope, and it's not that I don't recognize Lene in "Lost..." -it's just that the gasps between the highlights are many, and already after first round on my stereo I was bored out of my mind. It's as if this entire production is relied on the "one" really good song on the album, "How would it be". There is a reason why the rest of the repertoaire seems already forgotten. The second song after the pathetic opening is the "next best thing", but sounds written for a girlband/boyband.

The opening does not suit Lenes' voice nor style, the "na-na-na-na" itself sounds un-natural and misplaced. Of course these are my ears, and my taste -but I usually like Lene (and as I've already mentioned). So not a good start, but I thought I would get used to it. But no. After the fresh and promising "How would it be" I'm running out of reasons for why I should (or how I could) recommend "Lost in a moment". Is it horrible? Not at all. But I expected more, and this was a disappointment. 3 out of 6 stars to be more accurate. Good luck on the next project, Lene! But take your time!

The legend rolls on...quiet as can be.......2005-08-03

Though being an avid Lene Marlin fan, I have only just discovered that she has released a 3rd album. My first impressions are that 'Lost In A Moment' is a significantly superior album to her 2nd compilation, but slightly inferior to her original work. Of course, 'Playing My Game' is one of my favourite albums of all time, so that is hard to better.

Once more, Lene Marlin follows a formula that has brought her the quiet success of the past. Probably one of the most under-rated singer/songwriters of our time.

This is an essential addition for any Lene Marlin fan.

"playing my game" . i think she is a very tallented singer/songwriter. i love her songs and i cant stop listening to all her albums . currently and for the last 3 weeks i ve been listening to her newest album, "lost in a moment". its a wonderful album and i cant wait for her next one.

The aptly titled Lost in a Moment is Shrift's first album, but it's hardly a debut for the group's two members, singer/songwriter Nina Miranda and multi-texturalist/producer Dennis Wheatley. Miranda is a charter member of the celebrated British group Smoke City, which has scored European hits with its unique blend of bossa nova, trip hop, jazz, reggae and funk. Miranda has lent her unique voice and words to projects by such world music luminaries as Bebel Gilberto, Nitin Sawhney, Daniel Jobim, Jah Wobble and Da Lata. She is equally comfortable singing in English, Portuguese or French, and she shifts between those languages several times during the course of Lost in a Moment.

Miranda was introduced to her musical partner Dennis Wheatley shortly after completing the second Smoke City album. Wheatley is best known for his work with Atlas, a British electro band with a history of taking existing elements (Brazilian singers, string quartets, Randy Newman's "Baltimore") and whipping them up into delectably, danceably new ethno-electro mixtures. Miranda was familiar with his work under the Atlas moniker and was drawn in by what she calls the "depth of atmosphere and quality of sound." She found his work "cinematic and otherworldly," and in short order the two were building songs together.

The mood on Lost in a Moment is, as the album's title suggests, generally dreamy and soft, almost mystical at times, but with a worldly and modern edge. However, the project has plenty of upbeat, funky moments as well. Consider "To the Floor" a song that places Miranda's cool and carefree vocals atop Wheatley's funky breakbeats, big band and orchestral sounds, and handclaps before lapsing into a dubwise section that interweaves multiple vocal tracks and instrumental drama before ending with an impressionistic wash of aural colors.

Now a days it appears side projects are the norm for artists, rewarding their wanderlust and maintaining creative fires that made them musicians in the first place, while refusing the confines of one particular genre or sound. Nina Miranda is one those musicians. Originally part of the band Smoke City(which in itself appears to have been a collaboration), Miranda and partners in crime, Mark Brown and Chris Frank, melded the sounds of dub, bossanova, hip hop and tropicallia into a heady concoction that heralded the return of bossa nova for the new millenium. That project paved the way for acts like Da Lata, Bebel Gilberto, Suba, Zuco 103 and a surplus of compilations that would saturate the market (remember "trip hop" and "acid jazz"?).
Since 1995, Miranda and co. released Smoke City's sophmore "Heroes of Nature", joined forces with a plethora of musicians varying from Bebel Gilberto, Robert Miles, dub bassist extradonaire- Jah Wobble,Nitin Sawhney, Faze Action, Arkestra One and now Shrift. All her collaborators have constructed productions that have complimented her. They are all well thought out collaborations. Her voice is pure seduction whether singing in Portuguese, French, English, or scatting phrases and vocal meanderings. No music is beyond her. `Lost in A Moment' is no exception. While it's very much a mood album it relies more on the vibe it conveys than lyrics or concepts. The music production is handled by Tim Wheatley from Atlas and a little help from Da Lata's Chris Frank on percussion. While the production initially comes off as dreamy and atmospheric, there are a couple of surprises with tracks that are more up-tempo and funky midway through the LP. If looped film score bits, ambient percussion, sitars, samba, stretched reversed beats, and berimbau sound appealing you won't be disappointed. First rate.

i sometimes listen to this to fall asleep, not because it's boring, but because i actively listen to the music until im dreaming, nina miranda's voice is very pure and undoctured and the switching between languages is quite sexy, listening to it with headphones is the best as the sounds dance around all throughout the channels

Lost In A Moment (4.5).......2006-06-12

This album seems to be unusually polemic regarding the number of divergent reviews it has gotten by various reviews. One thing that they all seem to have right is that it is, indeed, a "chillout" album although I feel that may be unfairly categorizing it into something no different than the 4-disc prepackaged "Chillout" compilations you'll see at Wal-Mart.

The album is amazingly beautiful to listen to and I have no problem saying that, regardless of how subjective it is. It's artists like this that make feel better about admitting to others how much I enjoy electronic music. While this album has been compared to Bebel Gilberto's offerings already, I can only echo the sentiment. While, musically they may not sound the same, the same sense of heart is still there. I feel the same feeling of joy when I listen to what both artists have to offer. While the album is not bossa nova, it still shares the potential for what bossa nova offers to many of the genre's fans.

Tracks like "Blue" are so soothing to listen to. It begins simply enough with only one instrument immediately being heard. But as soon as the vocals enter, the song becomes something more. The singing is absolutely soothing to listen to and the music only helps to accentuate the vocal talent even more. Instead of repetitious, somewhat lacking beats that are found in some other musicians of the genre, but the musician and the singer each hold their own when in the presence of one another. The tempo changes to the cues of the vocals and vice versa. As the vocals slow down, the beat changes to conform to that. As the verses progress, the beat bridges off into different sections by utilizing different strings, changing the tempo, adding more instruments, removing other instruments, et cetera. The song becomes a complete harmony with nothing extraneous.

While most of the tracks on this album are this perfect, others such as "To The Floor" feel like an obligatory dance track like one finds, oddly enough, on some bebel gilberto albums. Instead of providing a nice change in pace it just becomes a distraction because of how poorely and rudimentary it sounds. The album, overall, is beautiful to listen to when you're feeling laid back. While it may not sound like bossa nova, to many, it may as well be. Neither Bebel, nor Cibelle, manage to out-do the vocals on this album regardless of their reputations. They are all, simply put, a blast to listen to.

Good. But Where've I heard this before?.......2006-05-04

Won't get into the history - others did that. But I will give a bit of background of Nina Miranda. She has a near cult following, from her days back with Smoke City on up. She's also done work with the likes of Bebel Gilberto, Da Lata (with Patrick Forge and Christian Franck.. I think Franck is her husband or boyfriend), and Hajime Yoshizawa to name a few. It's a very close circle of musicians who you'll generally see working with one another at some time.

This isn't a bad CD. It's a very nice chillout disc with loops and some great effects. I love the instrumentation in the tunes and the orchestrated samples that build. The mood of the cd is very consistent - very spacey and airy. You get that feel from the opening track, "Lost in a Moment", with Nina's voice over a consistent sample. But it's also in that song that you have a grasp of what to expect in the album. "Sereia" (mermaid) was a neat song too in the bridges and gaps, filling in spaces with orchestration overlapped by Nina's spoken words. But the song truly captures an image. I also dug 'As Far as I can See', which had a folkish feel to it, and the playful "Snow Samba" was also a standout. "To The Floor" really takes you by surprise. After going through pretty mellow songs, this one seems downright snappy with a more traditional beat.

But this wasn't without fault. I can see why some of the other reviewers were lulled to sleep - cuts like "Hum" and "Yes I Love You" didn't grab me and at one point, it felt like some of the songs dragged. Also, I know where I've heard this before... this CD is a spitting image of Arkestra One's album. And another album similar to both is Troubleman's "Time out of Mind" cd from a few years ago too. They have a near identical approach. Still, I recommend this, and if you like this you must check out Arkestra One's and Troubleman's albums. You might also like Jazzanova & Resoul's "Secret Love" series. I'm convinced this missed the cutoff of cuts for it.

Genius.......2006-03-18

I fear that the naysayers who seem to "not get" this record have been spoon fed bland, "chill-out" music for far too long. They should recognize genius when they hear it. This is quite simply the most beautiful CD I have heard in years. The Bebel Gilberto comparisons are silly as this is coming from a whole other sonic place. I love Bebel but Shrift really exist in their own musical world that has to be heard to be believed.

Electric Scotto.......2002-09-25

I like much of Scotto's artistry, but this is just not her cup of tea. Her high notes sound like they are plugged into an electric socket! AHHHHH!!!... Even her usual, wonderful word painting is not there. Her Vien's at the end of the garden scene are worse than the most mushy mouthed Sutherland (who could at least produce beautiful sounds). Get the Sony arias disc with Renata Scotto, which, oddly enough, shows her in much better and firmer voice, even though it was recorded later.

Ghiaurov is magnificent, as always and Kraus provides more elegant support than many of his later recordings.
If you want a verismo-like performance, get the recording with Freni (awesome......the largest voiced Margie on record). Domingo is dramatic, beautiful, if without a great high C. The final trio is SO dramatic. Hmmmm, what to buy?

Unique Kraus in exceptional Faust.......2000-06-22

One of the aspects that made of Alfredo Kraus an exceptional singer was the care with which he chose the roles that resulted most adequate to his voice and temper. Faust was one of these paradigmatic roles, but unfortunatelly he never made a studio recording of this opera. The Tokio live recording of 1973 is thus an exceptional substitute and probably the only chance to enjoy the master's full Faust. By the time of this recording, he was at the highest point of his carreer, and we may appreciate here his precise technique, the delicacy of this style and the adequacy of his voice for the French repertoire. His 'Salut, demeure ... ' is a masterclass of singing. Ghiaurov follows the tradition of the Russian and Bulgarian basses and composes an overacted but vocally splendid Mephistophèles. He was also at the highest point of his carreer. Renata Scotto was an irregular soprano, but her Margheritte is excellent (probably only surpassed on records by Victoria de los Angeles in this role). Ethuin's direction is agile, perhaps too rapid in the choirs. The quality of the sound is good, and the price is astonishingly low. The complete recording of the Tokio version is rare and very difficult to get, so this selection of highlights is an alternative to consider seriously. Given the low price of this CD, it is a must for any opera lover and Kraus fan.
