Limited edition Japanese pressing. Nirvana probably hired Steve Albini to produce In Utero with the hopes of creating their own Surfer Rosa, or at least shoring up their indie cred after becoming a pop phenomenon with a glossy punk record. In Utero, of course, turned out to be their last record, and it's hard not to hear it as Kurt Cobain's suicide note, since Albini's stark, uncompromising sound provides the perfect setting for Cobain's bleak, even nihilistic, lyrics. Even if the album wasn't a literal suicide note, it was certainly a conscious attempt to shed their audience an attempt that worked, by the way, since the record had lost its momentum when Cobain died in the spring of 1994. 12 tracks. Overwhelmed by sudden success, Nirvana promised to take a harsher, more abrasive route on their second major-label release. Enlisting Chicago-based noise maven Steve Albini (of Big Black fame), Kurt Cobain and company succeeded in producing a record that was violent, disillusioned, and deeply moving. Every song reads like a commentary on the cost of fame ("Serve the Servants") and the unhealthy relationship between performer and fan ("Milk It"). Of course, they might all simply be about Courtney Love. Gossip aside, there is no denying the sheer power of Cobain's songwriting, his singing, and the band's amazing, visceral power. Cobain even manages a John Lennon-like mantra at the end of the heart-wrenching "All Apologies." "All in all is all we are," he intones repeatedly, only for Cobain that's no consolation. --Percy KeeganCustomer Reviews:

Nirvana's BEST: 1993's In Utero.......2007-04-13
I first heard this about 1995, one year after Kurt Cobain's death.
In Utero(1993) is one of the first Cds I ever bought, back in junior high school. I had "Nevermind" on cassette. To me, Nevermind- a sleeker, more polished sounding release.
"Heart Shaped Box" - is the video that inspired me to buy this album. It just sounded so cool, w/ bright colors & death like themes (hospitals, man on a cross, black waters). "HSB" remains my favorite song by Nirvana.
From start to finish opening w/ "Serve the Servants" and ending w/ the closer "All Apologies"- this is just a more raw and mature and visual w/ lyrics of "umblical noose" - "meat-eating orchids" - "magnet tar pit" - "rape" among others, just more descriptive and real.
This also brings Nirvana a return to their roots & not conforming to what the media, record company & fans wanted to hear after "Nevermind."
This was no mainstream grunge-accessible pop like everyone wanted, but to me it BLOWS "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the rest of their 1991 Hit, AWAY!
Swansong of the most overrated band ever........2007-04-12
Kurt Cobain wasn't a genius by any means, his song-writing was terrible along with his "guitar playing." Back when Kurt was still alive, Nirvana was actually struggling with record sales but after Kurt blew his own head off, that's when record sales skyrocketed and they got the legendary status they don't deserve by any means. The only talented member of Nirvana was Dave Grohl, and his recent work with Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Killing Joke is way better than Nerdvana.
The death of Chuck Schuldiner (Death) was a real tragedy in the guitar world, not the death of Kurt Cobain. Chuck was 10000000000000000000x better than Kurt at both playing guitar and writing songs. Just listen to Death's "The Philosopher" (from "Individual Thought Patterns") and "Crystal Mountain" (from "Symbolic"), and you'll be de-converveted from this joke of a band.
If you're not ready for Death, check out the only worthy grunge band Alice in Chains (particularly "Dirt" and "Jar of Flies"), RIP Layne Staley.
Lastly, Nirvana didn't save rock, it just made it worse. Thanks to them, we have awful bands like Korn, the Deftones, Cold, Staind, and other nu-metal/a$$rock bands.

Nirvana's Creative Peak.......2005-05-15
1. This version is cheaper.
2. This version is exactly the same (song-wise) as the unedited version, aside from "Pennyroyal Tea" being remixed into a cleaner, overall louder sound (the way Kurt wanted to hear it).
Yes, the outside package says "Waif Me" instead of "Rape Me". However... the song itself has not been touched or edited in any way. And in "Milk It" they did not edit the word s**t at all (but I had to in this review, just for the sake of politcal correctness). So overall, the only way this cd is different from the unedited version is that the "Pennyroyal Tea" Scott Litt remix is included... which is actually better than the one on the unedited version! Plus this version isn't even $10! It's like the best version of In Utero is the least expensive one!
Now, about the cd in general. In Utero is, in my opinion, Nirvana's best cd. I love every song on this disc. The following is a short review of each song on the cd. Note: this cd was produced by Steve Albini, who did a great job. But 3 of the songs were taken to Scott Litt to be remixed, and make them sound cleaner. Two of those songs, "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies", are only available with the Scott Litt remix. On the unedited In Utero, "Pennyroyal Tea" appears in its original Steve Albini form. Granted, that version is good, but Kurt was not happy with it. On this version of In Utero, the Scott Litt "Pennyroyal Tea" remix is included.
Serve The Servants- Probably about Kurt's youth. Great opener.
Scentless Apprentice- About the book "Perfume". Kurt's songwriting at its best.
Heart-Shaped Box- First single off In Utero, might be about Courtney Love (or might not). This was mixed by Scott Litt.
Waif Me- Actually called Rape Me, B-side to the All Apologies single. And beleive it or not, it's an antirape song.
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle- This song is about actress Frances Farmer. In my opinion, this song was good enough to be a single (but probably too long).
Dumb- A nice, mellow song. For some reason, it gets a lot of radio airplay, even though it was never a single. Good stuff here.
Very Ape- Short song, about jocks and muscle men who think they're smart, but aren't.
Milk It- About fame and dealing with demands from people. B-side to the Heart-Shaped Box single. One of my favorite Nirvana songs.
Pennyroyal Tea- This is about someone who is on the edge of their own self- inflicted death. One of Kurt's favorites, and one of mine, too. This version is the Scott Litt remix. This was going to be their 3rd single, but with Kurt's suicide, it was cancelled.
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter- Originally called 9 Month Media Blackout. About writing and singing songs that are radio friendly.
tourette's- This song is great. All it is is Kurt yelling and screaming stuff. Tourette's syndrom is a disease where you yell out random swear words.
All Apologies- The 2nd single off In Utero. This is such a great song, very peaceful, yet has a sonic edge to it. It was mixed by Scott Litt.
And here I will end my lengthy review. In Utero represents Nirvana in their best, most creative state. I recommend buying either of these versions of In Utero, edited or unedited. They are both almost identical, but for the few differences. I also recommend buying the All Apologies single, as it is available again, and was out of print for several years. Long live Nirvana.

A great album...genius.......2005-02-11
First of all, this album is A LOT to listen to.Yes,it is only 12 tracks, but you can't get the full benefit of this album with only one or two listens. There are no pop radio anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Lithium" on this album, and it's like that for a reason. The group wanted to change there sound, because they had hated what they became. This change,in turn, was 'In Utero'.It opens with a bang with the excellent "Serve The Servants",which has several ironic lines in the beginning(teenage angst has paid off well).Following it was "Scentless Apprentice",a song with riffs that were completely different from anything heard on nevermind, but had excellent harmony. But it had Cobain screaming 'get away' in the chorus, just screaming."Heart Shaped Box" was an excellent song, even with it's eerie bass line,Cobain helps with his lyrics that surely signify something great."Waif Me" was originally titled "Rape Me",and is one of the BEST songs on the album, but one of the least credited."Frances Farmers Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle" is the only song on the album that will even sound remotly similar to anything heard on 'Nevermind'."Dumb" is another song that broke the mold of there normal sound, bringing in a full set of strings to back the band up."Very Ape" and "Milk It" are two more good songs on this album, with fast rythms and twisting lyrics."Pennyroyal Tea" is one of my personal favorites, due to the slow speed but intense lyrics and guitar riffs."Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" is ok,but due to the long static interruption in the beginning,it makes it my least favored track."Tourettes" is the closest Nirvana could drift,in my opinion, from the 'Nevermind' sound. The song has Cobain screaming fictional words over guitars that match some light Nu Metal in modern music. Finally,it all closes with "All Apoligies".It's soft harmony but sludgy guitars make it an excellent song, but it does sound better acoustically.
'In Utero' is one of the most radical concept albums of the 90's,and Nirvana should be credited for it's attempt at something new.But this desire to produce a new sound did leave a gap between the 'Nevermind' fans and the fans who enjoyed 'In Utero' more. The songs on this album are harder, and more intense, just as Cobain's life had become.Where as Nevermind,it just showed a glossy punk record with an alternative lean. So,you must pick which you want to go with.If you are a real fan of Nevermind, you might not like this.If you leaned towards Incesticide or Bleach instead of Nevermind, this album is more for you.

Best Album Ever.......2005-01-03
This is Kurt!.......2004-12-03
And possibly invest in With the Lights Out, bought it the day it came out, man is it wicked awesome, I Love You Kurt, Rest in Piece, and if you listen to some stuff, Dave is a wicked drumemr, and Krist is a very good bass player as well, the whole band gets props for bein Nirvana, but still, Kurt, we love you man, you honored us with this cd, we love you man, Rest is Piece p.s. Heart Shaped Box is as good as Teen Spirit!
Their second best album!.......2004-06-21
Serve the servents: This is a good opener. There are some good verses, but a not-so-good chorus. All about his dad. 4/5
Scentless apprentice: Weird lyrics. It's one of the heavier tracks on the album. Massive shouting in it. 4/5
Heart-shaped box: Probably the best track on the album. Great lyrics and an unbeatable chorus. San very emotionally. 5/5
Rape me: Another good track. The intro sounds a bit like the intro to "Smells like teen spirit". You think this is goanna be a soft song, but it gets louder. 5/5
Frances farmer will have her revenge on Seattle: This is a very catchy song. It's just a bit too long. 4.5/5
Dumb: Very relaxing. 5/5
Very ape: Quite a fast-paces song, and it's too short (1:55). The guitars sound amazing. They make a sort of crunchy sound. 3.5/5
Milk it: This a favourite. A very underrated song. It's one of those songs that's haunting and soft in the verses but gets louder in the chorus, with Kurt screaming. 5/5
Pennyroyal tea: This is another good track. I think this chorus is very catchy. 5/5
Radio friendly unit shifter: The chorus is good, one of the more faster songs. 3/5
Tourettes: Very short and very fast. It can be quite hard. Contains really long shouts. 4/5
All apologies: This is quite good when it starts off, but it does get worse. It's another relaxing track. 4/5
Gallons of rubbing alcahol through a strip (extra track): Very silent on the first verse, but the singing gets louder. This song is very long (7:33). Once this song reaches the end it gets slightly better, but it's still quite a boring song. 2/5
So, that's basically Nirvana's last album, and probably their best acomplished. I just think "Nevermind" is a tiny bit better.
Their final album is one of their best.......2004-04-02
Although they had only been releasing studio albums since 1989, by the time 1993 rolled around, Nirvana had made a name for themselves. They had achieved worldwide fame in a relatively short period of time - something some artists strive to achieve for many years and often don't succeed. Fortunately, Nirvana never had to worry about that. In 1993 the band released its third and final album, In Utero. Read on for my review.
Rather obviously, this album doesn't get nearly as much credit as its predecessor, the wildly-popular Nevermind. That's a real shame, because this album is equally good. Like Nevermind before it, this album spawned some huge hits for the band. There's the melodic alternative rocker Heart-Shaped Box, which is one of the band's greatest recordings of all time. In my opinion this song is every bit as good as, say, Smells Like Teen Spirit. And then, of course, we have the hard and heavy rocker Rape Me. Contrary to popular belief and the first impressions of many, this is an anti-rape song. And it's one of the finest of its kind. Dumb is another track that achieved some pretty high popularity, and why not? It's gloomy grunge at its very best! The band closes out the album with the track that would go on to be the most popular one from the album, All Apologies. This is an interesting track in that it fuses elements of pop and grunge - and the end result is nothing short of excellent. The minor hit Pennyroyal Tea can also be found on this album. It's a shame this didn't go on to become one of the band's bigger hits, because it's actually one of the finest songs they ever recorded. Many listeners claim that the lyrics to this song are a premonition to Kurt Cobain's 1994 suicide - listen for yourself and see if you agree. And then, of course, we have the underrated masterpieces of the album. Serve The Servants is Cobain's ode to his fans, and it's a rather excellent one. Another underrated masterpiece present here is Tourette's. Why didn't it become a bigger hit? And, of course, there's Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle (that's the longest title ever given to a Nirvana song.) All in all, this stands as one of the band's finest efforts.
The import version of the album features a bonus track, but as another reviewer stated, this track is a pretty disappointing one. If you want it, DO NOT shell out extra cash to get an import version of the album. Instead, either download it or get it on a rarities bootleg.
It's a real shame this album never got the same kind of credit that 1991's Nevermind did, because this album is every bit as good, even if it was never nearly as popular. It's a shame Kurt Cobain would die just a year after the album was released, because this album showed that they were capable of doing so much. If you like the band, this is a highly recommended album.
It Made HISTORY!.......2004-01-24
"Loud and quiet", are elements that are very hard to blend together, but In Utero accomplishes that and then some!!
Without argument, this album changed the world.
