The collector's items here include six previously unreleased tracks from an all-star drum ensemble session that Art Blakey led in 1958 with Philly Joe Jones, Roy Haynes, and Ray Barretto. The only one of five such recordings Blakey made for Blue Note from 1957 to 1962 that was not originally released, the date also features trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt, then members of Blakey's illustrious Jazz Messengers. The master drummers shine as soloists on rhythmic romps like Charlie Parker's bebop classic "Moose the Mooche" and the standard "Lover," while Barretto uses mallets for a memorable conga solo on Blakey's "Drums in the Rain." The CD concludes with two gems, duets Blakey recorded in 1959 with bassist Paul Chambers, including a previously unreleased version of "What Is This Thing Called Love" featuring remarkable bow work, and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm." --Mitchell Feldman
Customer Reviews:
Lee's Tune.......2002-10-18
If Lee Morgan's "Lee's Tune" had been released 40 years ago instead of recently, it would have been huge. This is one of Blakey's 3 best albums and they didn't even release it while most of these cats were alive.
Wow.......2000-03-26
Drums around the corner is a must have for all drummers! Art Blakey, Roy HAynes, Philly Joe Jones and Ray BArreto on one and the same Cd! The drumming is absolutly amazing. Only the sound isn't very good( old recording). So I think everybody who loves drumming and these greta drummers have to buy it!
Couldn't get any better for drum enthusiasts.......1999-11-07
This previously unreleased session from November 2, 1958 recorded at Manhattan Towers is a real joy. The legendary Art Blakey is joined by Lee Morgan on trumpet, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Bobby Timmons on piano from his Messengers of the period, and drummers Roy Haynes, and Joseph Rudolph Jones aka "Philly" Joe Jones and conga master Ray Barretto. Things get to a fast start with Charlie Parker's "Moose The Mooche" which has all the percussionists playing the melody! Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons have brief solos, and then the fireworks start. Ray Barretto solos briefly, and for the trap drummers Roy Haynes comes in first(on the left speaker) with crisp, crackling snare and rim shots, complimented by short, repetative phrases. Philly Joe(on the right speaker) is next with some of his trademark fire, followed by Art's(also on the right) bombshells. "Blakey's Blues" is more conventional in a sense as Morgan and Timmons really stretch out. The ensemble charges through "Let's Take 16 Bars" which starts with the drummers playing a common phrase, "Drums In The Rain" which brings memories of Art's predecessor drum ensemble record "Orgy In Rhythm" the previous year, and a very fast "Lover". Unlike "Orgy In Rhythm", "Drums Around the Corner" deserves merit because it is a more fully conceived date, as well as a more enjoyable one for hard bop enthusiasts. The recording quality is excellent, because of Rudy Van Gelder's familiarity w/ the Manhattan Towers studio(as Kenny Burrell's "Blue Lights", and Jimmy Smith's "The Sermon" were recorded there earlier that year) and Ron McMaster's 24 bit mastering job really brings the tonal qualities through, although RVG's original engineering has Morgan and Timmons farther back, and the drummers up front in the mix. Also included from another session in 1959 are 2 duets w/ Blakey and bassist Paul Chambers that are very interesting. Overall, drumming fans, as well as Blakey fans should enjoy this limited edition commodity. 3 of the 6 tunes from the 11/2/58 date run over 10 mins. resulting in over an hour of music If you want something similar in concept to "Orgy In Rhythm" but with a more straight ahead flavor, you will definitely want to obtain this. With "The African Beat" being released early next year, we get a view of Art Blakey as a creative master of the groove. And the dream pairing of Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, and Roy Haynes makes this too good to pass up.

Customer Reviews:
This is honest, no-frills, straight-ahead a cappella........1999-08-06
This is honest, no-frills, straight-ahead a cappella. The Persuasions shunned excess studio production and overdubbing on "Right Around The Corner," and just hit the tunes live in studio. The results: sounds like you're standing on a streetcorner with them. I confess: I'm a big fan of the group. I'm prejudiced. I like everything they do, for one reason or another. But I have a real soft spot for this record, not only for the great material (The Five Royales, Sam Cooke, Kurt Weill, Frank Zappa), but for the simplicity of the production. The Persuasions here rely only on their voices, and it's enough. No vocal acrobatics or pyrotechnics, or studio mix tricks---just great, pedal-to-the-metal singing. Jerry Lawson and Joe Russell really shine on this record, as does the five-fathoms-deep tone of Jimmy Hayes on "My Jug and I." They've never done another album quite like "Right Around The Corner." Highly recommended.
This is a very different kind of Persuasions album........1999-08-02
This is a very different kind of Persuasions album. They sing everything live in studio, with no overdubs, and Jimmy Hayes' bass voice is mixed into the group more---too much so, for my taste. Still, the performances are tight, and the lead singers are in fine fettle. The song choices are off-beat, but interestingly so. The Persuasions cover The Five Royales' "Right Around The Corner" wonderfully, and Joe Russell is in powerful voice on "Don't Leave Me Here to Cry" and "Come on and Save Me." Still, the standouts on this album have to be bass-singer Jimmy Hayes (still mixed down too much)on "My Jug and I" and "Oh Heavenly Salvation." That's right, that's Kurt Weill's "Oh Heavenly Salvation," one of the most unlikely (and successful) songs the group has ever sung. Jerry Lawson's turn on Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster" is a thing of beauty and style, and the group's ensemble vocals on "Love is All Around" are disarming. There's an odd arrangement of Frank Zappa's "Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up," but I think the album's highlight must be when The Persuasions turn to their old stand-by, Sam Cooke, with Lawson taking a gorgeous, heartfelt lead on "That's Heaven to Me." Well worth having, but the all-voices-are-equal vocal mix doesn't do Jimmy Hayes justice.

Customer Reviews:
Rural/Urban Blues Master.......2005-03-23
Big Joe Williams gets more sounds out of his guitar than others, only in part because he used more strings (nine). He uses the guitar as a percussive instrument , slapping it and hitting dampened strings. He strikes the strings hard--if this were electrified it would sound like funk. His riffs are tremendous, varying between rhythm and quick riffs, using tremendous bends, slides, and pop-offs, easily crossing between highs and low notes, chords and single notes. He can make the guitar sound like a drum, a bass, a ukulele, and a banjo.
The tracks are evenly recorded between pre- and post-1940's recording dates, including 7 from 1935, 4 from 1937, 7 from 1941, and 3 from New York. Except for 4 cuts from Aurora, all were recorded in Chicago; and the recording quality is uniformly excellent. Although Williams is in the tradition of the great Delta blues men, a few of his early numbers have the sound and attack of the later Chicago blues (e.g., "49 Highway Blues"). Williams moved to Chicago in the early forties, where he played with Sonny Boy Williamson (backing up very tastily on nine of the 21 tracks here), Robert Nighthawk, and, according to the liner notes, appeared a few times with Muddy Waters. Williams' vocals also transcend style, he can sound pinched and slurry on the country blues numbers (e.g., a version of "Baby Please Don't Go," 1935, accompanied by one-string-fiddle and washboard!), but strong and upfront on the more "urban" sounding tracks ("Brother James," 1937; most of the songs from 1941 and 1945).
Many, though not all, of the 1940's songs are more assertive and direct than the 1935 and 1937 dates, with stronger vocals and bass. Still, it works both ways; Williams' 1941 recording of `Please Don't Go" retains its rural flavor . `Please Don't Go,' along features more superb harmonica by the great Sonny Boy Williamson, regarded by some as the greatest of all harpists. However, don't buy this CD if your primary objective is to hear Williamson, he's more in the background on some of the other songs. The CD features over an hour of superb music by an amazingly talented musician, and the recording quality is excellent throughout. With brief liner notes, and a list of songs, recording dates, and personnel.
