Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

Best known for 1998's No. 1, "I Wanna Fall in Love," Lila McCann is one of the standouts in Nashville's latest batch of country brat-packers. McCann possesses a sweet, exuberant, full-throated voice that's vaguely reminiscent of a de-twanged pubescent Reba McEntire. On Something in the Air, McCann's second album, she usually sounds more callow than convincing when she tries to tackle "grown-up" themes--and producer Mark Spiro's generic arrangements don't help much. But McCann shines when she stays within her emotional comfort zone on songs such as "Kiss Me," which deals with the fumbling anxiety of that very first teenage lip-lock, and "Crush," which takes a surprisingly clear-eyed look at the temporary insanity of adolescent infatuation. "I Will Be" is an especially lovely song that earnestly and movingly expresses the hopes and fears of growing up. Not to wish trouble on anyone, but when McCann gets a few more years' worth of hard knocks under her belt, she may well be unstoppable; then again, she may be already. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:

*~Something about Lila McCann~*.......2002-05-28
She sings about more mature issues and this album has a lot of songs about *love*~ Some of the upbeat songs that stand out are With You, Rymes With, Crush, and Hit By Love. Those are all great songs to listen to!
She also has some ballads that I think are absolutely beautifully sung~ You're Gone, Kiss Me Now, and When You Walked Into My Life. Theres not one song thats not worth listening to!
I dont use the skip button when I'm listening to this CD~ It's a great cd that I reccommend to buy! She's one of those singers that is unique and deserves more publicity than shes been getting lately! It's worth the money and you wont be sorry! :-)
Something About Lila.......2001-10-21
From the mid-tempo country-rock opening track "With You" to the slow, powerful country ballad "Kiss Me Now" and the album's closer "When You Walked Into My Life," SOMETHING IN THE AIR features top-shelf Nashville songs and McCann's exceptional voice, which often draws comparisons to her friend LeAnn Rimes. In addition to McCann's superb vocal skills, she also shows a flair for songwriting, as she co-wrote two of the sassier songs on SOMETHING IN THE AIR, "I Reckon I Will" and "Can You Hear Me," with Mark Spiro.

Product Description
STEVE COHEN & JIM LIBAN "Hot Air" Maximum Ink Nov.2,2001 Hi-Fi Report-One of the typical knocks against established musicians is that after a certain point, they just stop progressing creatively-instead relying on recycled theatrics viewed through time tinted rose-colored glasses. These two zephyrs of blues harmonica, however, seem to have escaped that fate.Instead, this disc the two Milwaukee veterans on a personal devolution from their rockin blues legacies.(Liban in Short Stuff,Cohen in Leroy Airmaster). With the simplicity of dual harmonicas(or guitar/harmonica pairings)sans percussion, the versatility of their instruments comes front and center-even crisper than on heralded 1950s recordings. What's left is a modern interpretation of rural delta blues-such as the field recordings captured by the Lomaxes. Some harmonica dueling sessions get pretty frantic within the otherwise mellow context of the disc(such as the end of Rocket 88).But the best tracks feature Cohen's understated guitar and Liban's harmonicas on Big Boss Man or Willie Dixon's My Babe, which takes a slightly slower, darker tone than the version made famous by Little Walter. While the disc might have been a bit more intriguing with lesser known tunes,it shows that the everyday standards in blues can be refreshed,in the right hands.
