Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars mega-talented musician.......2007-03-26

Peabo Bryson has an incredible voice and it really shines through on this album. It truly is the best of Peabo!

5 out of 5 stars Truly one of the greatest Soul balladeers ever........2006-09-02

Universally recognized and revered as one of THE soul ballad's master singers. Peabo Bryson is nonetheless an underrated singer who has only received the success and acclaim he so deserves sporadically. Most of his big Capitol hits are featured here but it would have been nice to have more LP-only tracks also included. If you are a fan of classy, smooth and timeless romantic R&B/Soul music...waste no time in getting this fabulous CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good Buy!.......2006-07-20

Peabo Bryson never lets me down. His music is superb and this CD bears witness to that fact. Really enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-04

To me Peabo Bryson has one of the most clear and magical voices I have ever heard.I mean Peabo has the perfect voice. He puts so much emotion and feeling into every song that he sings,I mean it's almost like he's actually singing to you personally.I love this collection. It has every song that I love on it,it is definitely worth the money.I am so in love with this man.My personal favorites are,"Feel The Fire","I'm So Into You","I Can Make It Better","Closer Than Close","Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You",and "We Don't Have To Talk About Love". Basically, what I'm trying to say is that if you like Peabo Bryson you are definitely gonna love this collection,I guarantee it.

5 out of 5 stars The best voice EVER @}->---.......2006-03-08

I've reviewed a few other Peabo cds and I always say the same thing; his voice is magical and beautiful. He is so talented and this is some of his best work.
If you are new to his music (where have you been?), then this is a good starting point, but for his bigger fans, this is only a sprinkle of material and there are many more popular songs than represented here. I give this 5 stars for the voice that is so smooth and heavenly, but realistically, he has zillions of cd's with his hits on them and there really isn't anything special here. I do still love Can You Stop The Rain and If Ever You're In My Arms Again.
Check this out for his voice, but get a few of his cds for more variety.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

I love this CD! The choice of songs are great. I can't wait to get into my car and play the songs over and over. I can't help but sing the words all day long....

5 out of 5 stars "GIMME LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE--CRAAAZY LOVE!".......2002-07-03

What can I say? This is Outstanding. It has something for both men and women. Most of the tracks are for WOMEN; however, I think when a man sees "his lady" happy, he's happy too, right? Ha. There are some sultry female voices for men too though: tracks 10, 12, 13, and especially track 16 by the late, great Aaliyah. Every relationship needs music like this. I think BODY AND SOUL: NO CONTROL (SENSUAL SOUL COLLECTION) would be perfect to listen to BEFORE you see your loved one. Whether you work from home or on the commute home from the office, it is Sure to Loosen you up and make you feel, um, Romantic. Dancing to the music together or alone for your loved one, would be very pleasing and stimulating for both.

I love all the songs but must say what drew me was the first song. I heard it in the store and I was in a hurry--definitely not planning on buying anything; but as soon as I heard it, I closed my eyes and was Lost in the music. I felt myself Smile. MUSIC THAT DOES THAT TO ME IS A NO-BRAINER--IT IS GETTING PURCHASED! What cinched the sale was seeing the song, "I'll Make Love to You" by BoyzIIMen--I've Always loved that song.

Now that I've had time to listen to it all, my favorite tracks are: 1, 3!, 5, 7, 8!, 9 (I dedicate this song to my special someone!)16 and 17; however, I love every track! Get this and discover your favorites. There are no bad songs, no filler songs here. All the music is original songs by the original artists and digitally mastered for the best sound quality. My stereo system is happy and so am I.

To sum this up, in a word--YOWZA! (Good word! Ha.)

Soar Together,
Soaring Heart

Pendergrass's second album after his departure from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes continued his solo ascent. Life Is a Song Worth Singing masterfully mixes and matches moods, flowing from two very different anthems (the dramatic title track and the party jam "Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose") through seductive classics such as "Close the Door." His rich vocals ride tasty Philly tracks on one of the city's true masterpieces. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The peak..........2006-06-12

I was only 4 years old when this album came out, but I remember WELL the day my father came home with THIS album. The first song he put on was "Only You", and that did it for me!

For me this IS Teddy's peak because this album has a great balance of upbeat and more mellow material while the albums after this focused more on the bedroom. They were still good albums, but the funk factor was sacrificed. This album and his self-titled solo debut are the ones I remember most and bring back the most memories of Teddy from my childhood before his injury.

Anyway, the balance, again, is what makes this album so great. I mean he can come out with FUNK on "Only You", disco-ish on the title cut, he gets DOWN, gets FUNKY, and gets loose (which sounds a lot a like the song Rerun always danced to on "What's Happenin'"), "When Somebody Loves You Back", and of course, "Close The Door."

Like Luther Vandross, a lot of people forget that Teddy had a hell of a way with dance-oriented and upbeat music. This album is proof positive. If you're looking to buy ONE album from Teddy, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars The album that made Teddy a solo superstar!.......2003-08-24

This was Teddy's second album and "Close The Door" virtually guaranteed he would continue to be the #1 male R&B singer of the 1970s. His self-titled solo debut had set the prototype for his subsequent PIR releases but this one became his most successful project thanks to "Only You", "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose" and the above-mentioned classic ballad.

3 out of 5 stars Doubtful selections.......2007-02-09

There are two one-disk collections of Zevon available on Amazon. I agree with Tim Brough below that if you get only one, you should go with 'Genius'. It has some excellent tracks - 'Carmelita', 'Reconsider Me', and 'Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead' - that were inexplicably left off of this set. The songs that you lose by picking up 'Genius' instead are mostly forgettable, although I wish 'Genius' had included 'Mohammed`s Radio' from AQNL, and both disks sadly excluded 'Transverse City', the terrific title track of an album that bombed commercially.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, One-Disc Compilation.......2003-11-09

Zevon is a great ballad artist, and it is very sad to hear that he died so early. This CD gave me my first taste of Zevon and I won't forget it.

A great disc overall...I like "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner"

3 out of 5 stars Skip This for "Genius".......2003-09-12

Warren Zevon is a lost American Treasure. Like John Prine and maybe Randy Newman, he understood that songs could also stand as separate literary structures. But since "Genius" contains his post Elektra/Asylum output and the uncensored version of "Lawyers Guns and Money" (the you-know-what does not hit the fan on "AQNL"), "Genius" is the better buy. Of course, if you're feeling adventurous and have a few extra bucks, you should spring for "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead."

"Genius" does trade off "AQNL's" "Ain't That Pretty at All" and the title track to the brilliant "The Envoy." Maybe someday that album and the live "Stand In The Fire" will make it to CD....

5 out of 5 stars Warren Zevon - A Unique Songwriter.......2002-09-28

Even though "The Best Of Warren Zevon" only covers the years he was on Asylum records, it is still worth getting. Among the quirky characters and twisted love songs, Warren Zevon wrote "The Envoy" in 1982. Its lyrics are eerily prophetic and just as relevant, if not more so, to the state of the world today. "Nuclear arms in the Middle East. Israel's attacking the Iraquis. The Syrians are mad at the Labanese, and Baghdad does whatever she please. Looks like another threat to world peace, for the envoy." The fact that the album "The Envoy" is out of print makes this Zevon collection indispensable. The version of "Lawyers, Guns And Money" included in this compilation is the single, edited version. That makes the song highly collectible, since it's the only edited version available on CD. "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is sadly ironic, as Warren Zevon is fast approaching the big sleep. I hope this CD helps people to remember him for much more than "Werewolves Of London."

5 out of 5 stars Warren, we wish we'd known ye better.......2002-09-25

This one gets moved to the top of the review priority list after hearing that Zevon has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. This was shocking news for someone so young. While it's cruel to say his best years were behind him (that's what too much substance abuse will do), what he's going to leave behind is very special.

I was in college when "Excitable Boy" came out. He was called "The New Contender", and for awhile he was. That album remains an all-time classic, and six songs from that album are deservedly on this one.

But there was more good stuff, before and after. Before "...Boy" hit, he was mostly known for writing "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me", which was a hit for Linda Ronstadt. He has his own excellent version here, plus "Mohammed's Radio", "Desperados Under the Eaves", and what should have been his signature song, the outstanding "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" from that period.

He would never come out with something as great as "...Boy" again, but there was more. My favorite of these is "The Envoy". The album ends with "Looking for the Next Best Thing", which you can interpret any way you want to. A couple more albums like this, and he would have not only been a contender, he could have been the best that ever was.

5 out of 5 stars JUST PERFECTION!!.......2006-04-08

I have all of Dmitri's recordings and this is my favorite due to the quality of the songs, Dmitri's mastery of all of them and the really lush orchestrations. All of the songs are just gorgeous and his voice so beautiful that I listen to this all day at work on my portable CD player. I recently saw him in concert and purchased the DVD of the "War Songs" which were featured in the second half of his concert. Of course, I recommend the CD and the DVD as really stunning. However, if I could only listen to one of his CD's, this is my favorite. As a former singer who trained for 15 years, I can tell you that Dmitri's vocal technique is perfect, just perfect! The voice comes from heaven! Don't wait to get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Hvorostovsky...........again, magic.......2006-02-14

Moscow Nights - This collection is emotionally draining, sad; the minor keys, the great poets and composers, an era unexpressed to Americans. It is a revelation, tended by one of the most beautiful of Russian voices. Listen to it in pieces, in a quiet space, and ponder. Dmitri commands an opera stage - two visits to Queen of Spades at the Met- can lead to no other conclusion. However, it is his quiet recollections of Russian folk music, Russian sacred music, and Soviet music that arouses his greatest talents. This is a recording to be treasured.

5 out of 5 stars hvorostovsky does it again.......2005-05-01

This is the latest installment of the succesfull Hvorostosky/Orbelian collaboration. In "I met you my love" the spotlight was on the socalled Russian Romances, russian art songs of the 19e century. Then came " Where are you my brothers" a collection of Russian war songs. This title contains a collection of the best post war(50s&60s) songs. If you love melodious songs in minor key this is it.The selection is quiet varied and everybody will have his or her own favourites. For me there was'nt a redundant song. The singing is as always faultless and inspired, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra plays topnotch and the arrangments by Evgeny Stesyuk are as always beautifull. But be warned this cd can have a depressing effect because besides being beautifull this music is also mostly very moving. Buy if you love russian music and good musicianship you can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Lady.......2006-04-12

Prime Of My Life is a wonderful CD that showcases Phyllis' powerful vocals. I love every song from "When You Get Right Down To It" to "Whatever Happened to Our Love," and you all know that's the whole CD. If you can find a customized remastered version of this CD, there are some bonus tracks on there. If you don't have this, I recommend you buy it pronto, and buy every Phyllis Hyman CD that you possibly can. Phyllis is irreplacable; she's a legend, and I hope that she's happy and at peace.

See you on the other side, Phyllis. I love you!!!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Albums I've Ever Heard.......2005-08-25

I'm only 21 but i know good music when i hear it. I love everything about Phyllis Hyman. Prime Of My Life his my favorite album by her. You can hear the pain in her voice, you can feel her joy and love through the lyric's. She stands out as a R&B and Jazz legend. She is truely missed.

5 out of 5 stars She was Prime~a worthy followup to Living All Alone.......2005-06-02

Prime of My Life was self poetic of Phyllis. She found her place and she was very comfortable with in her place on this CD. The songs, many of which spoke her truest feelings. It was her self assured title track that let her fans know that she was in her Prime. She exuded true poise and sophistication. Each track showed that she was in her zone and she was there to stay, even if for just a little while. Although she was a self admitted ballad queen, which is shown in the romantic track, Meet Me on the Moon and I've Found Love, somehow she kept finding her place and her voice on the dance floor with the #1 release, Don't Wanna Change The World. Not only does she tell the man that she doesn't want to change his world, she lays down a serious rap, and when she's finished, she asks, "Understand what I'm sayin'?" It doesn't get any better than that.

Then you move from that onto the trademark and heartfelt heartbreak tunes that Phyllis fans know her for: Whatever Happened to Our Love, When I Give My Love This Time and Walk Away. Alas, one mustn't forget the liberating tunes that she poetically recites in the most controlled voice at that point in her career: Living In Confusion, I Can't Take It Anymore and the When I Give My Love This Time. She makes the transition on this album seamless. It proved to those fans old and new that she was a woman in her Prime--listen to her roar a tune in a sophistication and class that solely belongs to Phyllis.

5 out of 5 stars BEYOND INCREDIBLE!!!!!.......2004-12-17

That voice is beyond the signature of incredible power.......and control.....that lady had AMAZING CONTROLLLLLLLL!!! god, have u ever heard "Living In Confusion (The Album Version)" WOWWWW!!

When she yelled out "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!" wow,she must have really be tired of going through what she was going through at that time she co-wrote the song......thats one thing about any song phyllis hyman sings, she convinces u to the maximum , that what shes singing about is the absolute truth......

OMG,I love Phyllis so much.....she is juss my mentor,my inspiration......i wish i had enough money to buy every thing by her at one time.....

Leonard Bernstein's New York is a cornucopia of tongue-in-cheek wit, unabashed romanticism, big-city loneliness, and intellectual irony. His well-known orchestral brilliance is beautifully represented under the stellar conducting of Eric Stern, but his underappreciated talents as a songwriter are what shine, elevating this recording to magic. The cast of American theater's best includes Mandy Patinkin wonderfully indulging his comic side; Judy Blazer and Donna Murphy, the shiniest lights on Broadway, demonstrating their extensive range as singing actresses; Audra McDonald making the difficult sound easy; and Richard Muenz and Dawn Upshaw singing elegantly. Most unforgettably pleasing are the trios "Ya Got Me" and "What A Waste." A great tribute to Bernstein's theater works. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-13

I agree that this is a great collection. But I have to wonder: Am I the only one who got a bum copy of the CD? The songs are all mixed up on my copy, as in, most of the tracks are mislabeled: "A Quiet Girl" is really "Tonight", The Balcony Scene, printed as "Tonight" is really "Somewhere". The list goes on.

So, who do I kvetch to? I'd like a copy that isn't a complete mishmash.

1 out of 5 stars The Feel of New York.......2007-01-09

Having spent most of my working years in NYC, I felt this CD brought the city to me. Bernstein has allways been a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars The next stop once you've heard the originals.......2007-01-09

As a tribute to Bernstein on Broadway, this CD is hard to beat. All the singers are stars but of a generation, ro two, beyond the originals. Naturally here's been a change of style, and these renditions are more knowing, sophisticated, and at times ironic than the originals. On their own, Donna Murphy, Dawn Upshaw, and Mandy Patinkin, among others, are masters of their craft, but I hope anyone who loves LB will also seek out the original cast albums for all of his musicals, or the clesest one can get (On the Town was remade in the Fifties). Those recordings cast a unique spel, but the next stop is this marvelous CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein's New York, it's a wonderful town!.......2002-01-15

And speaking of "Wonderful Town," it's so nice to hear music from this least appreciated of Bernstein's musicals. "What a Waste," "A Quiet Girl" and Audra McDonald's enchanting "A Little Bit in Love" have never sounded better. Donna Murphy burns the house down with the torchy "Ain't Got No Tears Left," and has fun with Patinkin and Blazer on the raucous "Ya Got Me." "One Hand, One Heart" sung by Dawn Upshaw and Richard Muenz is movingly rendered, as is Patinkin's wonderful delivery of an all-time Bernstein favorite, "Some Other Time." My only comlaint? Where is "I Can Cook Too?" A terrific recording.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD BUT..........2000-07-02

I loved this CD, but there was some things that kept it fromgetting four stars. First Mandy Patkin, I loved him in Sunday in The Park With George, also I have a CD of him singing yiddish songs all good, but in this CD I just don't like him. Like in the song "Come Up To My Place" I didn't like his voice and I never could quite see him as the character for that song. Also I would have liked to see (well actually "hear") some more of the dance numbers or overtures, I realize the main point of the CD was all the singers they put together, but the real highlight of the CD for me was the sections from Fancy Free, and Ballet At The Village Vortex from Wonderful Town. Also I liked "One Hand One Heart" a lot. Overall I would get this CD if you like Bernstein or any of these musicals, it is good listen, just not outstanding.
