4 out of 5 stars Great first step to Mozart .......2006-11-08

This cd is a great way to introduce your baby to Mozart. My son loves it.

4 out of 5 stars I'm a fan of slow songs in latter half.......2006-03-25

I prefer the slow songs, they seems to be a better fit for my baby. I also bought The Mozart Effect: Music For Babies: Nighty Night which I like a lot. The performances are well played by talented musicians. (I have a degree from Peabody so that's a true compliment)

5 out of 5 stars Small Price and Great Music.......2007-03-11

I purchased this as a present and he loves it. A nice music mix. If you like german band music/octoberfest music - this is the one.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music in the Spirit of Oktoberfest.......2006-08-01

As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for CD's of good Oktoberfest music. In this particular CD, all of the songs are played by the German Air Force Band and are taken from another CD entitled, "More German Military Marches & Polkas - Vol. II." As you might expect, most of the selections are not--strictly speaking--Oktoberfest numbers. However, they are played and sung in the light-hearted, breezy manner typical of Oktoberfest. In addition, the band and singers give top-notch performances. So, as a CD of Oktoberfest-like music, I give this product high marks. It would probably make great background music for any Oktoberfest.

5 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to Chubby Lou's Life........2005-12-20

Every Oktober (that's German for "October") Chubby Lou throws his annual Oktoberfest celebration. It's quite well known in the south, as we go on a stint of "bier trinken" (that's german for drinking beer). Seeing Chubby Lou in his Lederhosen is quite possibly the greatest thing ever, it's more memorable than your first born child. His stomach sticks out and he doesn't care, he dances the night away with his chalice full of beer. Everyone makes it out, the whole sizzle chest crew (big frank, cheese grits and lupus fury) we all have superior dancing skills than anyone attending the party. Chubby Lou loves oktoberfest so much that we have to tell him that it's over, otherwise he won't stop celebrating, he once celebrated 3 months straight and lost his job, got evicted, and his car was repocessed, we all had good laughs after that. Chubby Lous mom holds down the cooking, nothing but schnitzel, bratwurst and sauerkraut, pommes frites (that's german for french fries) all night long, she loves it. The track that really puts the party in 6th gear is " Komm Und Tanz" we played this song and danced for 3 hours, the police were called to break the famous shin-dig up, but they always end up joining the party, who can resist fine ladies, german beer, and non stop polka tanzen (that's polka dancing in german). We usually round off the end of the celebration with a 6 hour tribute to Hasselhoff, and score like Robin Yount on 3-2 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Anyways, I hope you see now that this is a mandatory oktoberfest keep-sake.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2000-08-23

This is a wonderful collection of festive German songs, great for listening to at parties, dinners, or your own Oktoberfest!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful beautiful.......2007-06-27

This CD was a gift for someone who loves the classic Ave Maria, and it delivers an assortment of the most beautiful recordings of the hymn ever made. Just lovely!

3 out of 5 stars Ave Maria.......2007-05-30

Some very good renditions of various versions, but some were rerecordings and not remastered, so were grainy and sounded like old 33.3 RPM recordings. I was disapppointed in those, but most were excellent for my purpose in becoming familiar with the music.

5 out of 5 stars Ave Maria - penetrating hymns.......2006-01-26

Other CD's have various versions of Ave Maria, as does this one. What distinguishes this CD is the quality of the recordings, the reverent tone of the vocalists, and the impressive blending of the singers and orchestras. Some versions inpsire an awesome silence, attracting our focus on these hymns and their solemnity. Ave Maria continually provides a respite from the world--it is so intense. These Ave Maria hymns are captivating enough by their music alone. The meaning adds the intended spiritual dimension. This album comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars the Ave Maria Album.......2005-10-03

My husband and I listen to this all the time .. whatever
version is your preference, you can probably find it on this
album. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars My Dad used to sing this while shaving.......2005-06-11

This beautiful aria is interpreted 16 ways by several renown singers and composers, so I'm sure you'll find your own personal favorites among the different versions. Each rendition has its own descriptor, and I found myself thinking "riveting", "exhilerating", "captivating", "evocative", "inspiring", or even "heartbreaking" for the same compelling music. To me, even the old fashioned, ragged recordings herein had a certain charm, and I don't mind the 'scratchiness' at all. I believe my Dad would sing Franz Schubert's 'Ave Maria' as interpreted by tenor Jerry Hadley -- I swear it literally brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it. As a child, I remember the delight I took in hearing my Dad sing with all the passion and drama of an artiste -- and you know, for a man who didn't even know all the lyrics, he sounded pretty darn good in our old bathroom! Seriously, this is a wonderful collection, even without the reminiscent sentimentality. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful!.......2002-03-02

Two words describe the music found on this CD: ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! The beauty of the vocals and music combine to allow one to transcend from the daily grind to a world of beauty. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Where is Amore I?.......2001-02-16

This CD is a selection of arias from Italian operas. Most of the time when you get a compilation like this, you feel lucky if you like 2/3 of the selections. In this case, whoever did the selecting did a great job, there isn't a clinker in the lot. About half of the arias are by Puccini, the rest are by Verdi, Donizetti, and Giordano. Singers include Kiri Te Kanawa, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Tucker, and Andrea Rost. There is enough variety to keep the whole CD interesting, yet the mood is consistent throughout. The sound is generally quite good, and while I am not generally a fan of live recordings, the audience response in the performance by Pavarotti really does add excitement to the presentation. Given the title of this CD, I assumed this was the second in a series, and I liked it so much I went looking for the original. Unfortunately, I can find no other CD on the Sony label titled Amore - too bad.

This soundtrack caps a busy year for John Williams: In addition to Munich, he also scored Star Wars: Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith, War of the Worlds, and Memoirs of a Geisha. When it comes to Hollywood's A-list big-budget needs, Williams, with 46 Oscar nominations by the end of 2005, remains the go-to composer. But does he deserve his reputation? Well, it depends on what you want from a score: If you expect it to surprise you at every turn, you should look elsewhere; but if you want music to faithfully match the mood of the images it accompanies, and as lavish as said images usually are, Williams is worth every penny he gets, as Munich amply proves. While Steven Spielberg's drama-thriller starts off in 1972, Williams eschews period touches and delivers a mix of powerful, string-heavy atmospherics--"Hatikvah (The Hope)," "A Prayer for Peace," "Thoughts of Home"--while ethnic elements (which could easily have been overdone in a film dealing with Palestinians and Israelis) are, cleverly, almost subliminal. Fans of otherworldly female vocals should note that sought-after session singer Lisbeth Scott (The Chronicles of Narnia) appears on tracks such as "Munich, 1972" and "Remembering Munich." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Steven Spielberg directs an international cast in Munich, a suspense thriller set in the aftermath of the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Five-time Academy Award winner John Williams lends his musical talents to the film by composing and conducting the magnificent soundtrack. For Munich, Williams has created some of the most powerful and enduring film music of our time. With his sweeping score, he puts forth a feeling of intense emotion that takes the listener on a thought-provoking journey. With a career spanning over four decades, Williams has received 46 Oscar nominations (more than any living person) and has won 5 Oscars, 18 Grammys, 4 Golden Globes, 4 Emmys, and 6 BAFTA Awards.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful soundtrack to a beautiful film - John Williams proves his mastery yet again.......2007-07-15

Steven Spielberg's "Munich" was, and is (at least in this reviewer's opinion) one of the finest, and most inherently misunderstood, works of art to rise out of the chaos and uncertainty of the post-9/11 world.
It is my personal philosophy that, in a realist style of filmmaking, the various media incorporated into the film's presentation simulate different aspects of the viewer's own experience "inside" the story - images simulate vision, sound simulates hearing. But there is one crucial part of the human experience that film alone cannot possibly simulate; emotion. John Williams has always greatly incorporated this philosophy into his film scores, which has surely contributed to his status as a deeply respected and beloved composer. But in a film where emotion runs deep, ambiguity runs strongly, and subtlety abounds, one might expect even the best of composers to hit his limit. Not so for John Williams. His ambient, exquisite score for "Munich" encapsulates the mood, feeling and concept of the film with striking accuracy.
Williams falls back from sweeping overtures in this film to compose a score that is affecting, yet ambient. Rather than sculpting the music to choreograph each scene, Mr. Williams primarily uses only a few core themes, varying them to the appropriate degree for each scene in which they are used. The quiet consistency is strikingly effective; without even realizing it, we come to identify "Avner's Theme" with the ray of hope, the humanity that Avner and his fellows struggle to maintain even in the face of their grisly line of work. "Munich, 1972", played over the opening scenes of the film, passionately inflicts upon us the horror and tragedy of the attacks at the 1972 Olympic games; its reprise, "Remembering Munich", played as bloody story of the Israeli athletes is retold in greater detail, emanates of unease and shock. Most involving, perhaps, is the tense, feverish rhythm of "Encounter in London", which mimics a human heartbeat - Avner's heartbeat, the assassins' hearbeat, our heartbeat. Ingeniously played at strategic points throughout the film, the nightmarish beat quickly becomes a harbinger of brutality to come, filling us with dread and anticipation, completely immersing us in the action. But perhaps most memorable of all is the genuinely haunting overture of the "End Credits" followed by "Avner and Daphne", originally played over one of the most chilling endings I have ever experienced in film. The melancholy reprise of the film's major themes, the combined feeling of deep sadness, mourning and yet a tiny spark of hope for an uncertain future - these powerful elements ensured that every conscious and open-minded viewer walked out of the movie theater in deep contemplation, which is certainly something which is surely something from which Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Williams would derive a great sense of accomplishment. The tune, and the ending, still sends a shiver up my spine whenever I see it, and I've rewatched and relistened to it many times.
Anyone who has seen and experienced this exquisitely tragic film owes it to themselves to pick up this quietly beautiful soundtrack, which proves once again beyond a shadow of doubt that John Williams possesses well-nigh infinite potential for capturing the emotional essence of films in music.
On my personal ratings scale... this album receives a 10/10.

5 out of 5 stars Another Williams gem!.......2006-11-01

John Williams'superb score for "Munich" pulls off something rare-it's
better than the movie. This is the maestro at his full-throttle best.
The score is intense, powerful, thrilling, and magnificently performed
by the LA Recording Arts Orchestra under the master's superb baton.
This is his best work since "Saving Private Ryan"

5 out of 5 stars Should Have Taken the Academy Award!.......2006-09-27

Well, I must say, Williams got ripped off AGAIN this year, with yet another beautiful score misunderstood. I sometimes wonder when the Academy will get a clue and start giving awards where they are do.

As far as the score goes, get it. It is a passionate tribute to it's story, and reminds me strongly of some of the best Williams scores. Echoes of Empire of the Sun, Seven Years in Tibet, Schindler's List and even Revenge of the Sith cover this album. On top of these wonderful stylistic comebacks is a wealth of new material, (meaning extremely original compositions) that cannot be passed up.

Support Williams, and buy the score that should have won.

4 out of 5 stars Song played on the radio in the safe house scene.......2006-07-12

Does anyone know the name of the song played on the radio when the Israeli team and the other team are in the safe house?
The song is heard for about 5-10 seconds when one of the guys on the Israeli team gets up and changes the radio station from the station playing Arabic music.
It has a nice catchy tune.

Thank you

5 out of 5 stars Intense movie.......2006-05-03

This movie was very intense due of course to the subject matter. The music by John Williams was just superb and helped draw me into this sad story. The mournful voice of Lisbeth Scott in the track "Remembering Munich" reminds me of the never-ending conflict between the progeny of Ishmael and Isaac.

5 out of 5 stars Not since Wunderlich!!.......2004-03-29

I know it's heresy to say this, but this music hasn't been sung so beautifully by a tenor since the great Fritz Wunderlich.

What is it about Jerry Hadley that no matter what he sings, he seems to be just right for the music.

Oh, yeah - I forgot. It's because he is a fabulous musician and probably the most underrated singer in the world today.

I also have a feeling that no small measure of the success of this effort is the incandescent conducting of Richard Bonynge.

5 out of 5 stars Hadley & Bonynge have created a beautiful recording.......2007-07-19

I wish I had reviewed this sooner, since I have owned it for quite some time. Jerry Hadley was blessed with a rich lyric tenor, expressiveness which came from the heart, and more musicality in his little finger than most of us will have in a lifetime. His German has always been impeccable, and he has a gift for conveying all the 'schlag' (meant 100% as a compliment) that a Viennese operetta aria can hold... and then some.

Some folks may think that Jerry Hadley is too expressive, but that's an oxymoron in the world of singing. Expressiveness and emotion are the reasons the music and lyrics were written in the first place.

He was in his element in these beautiful arias. As a fan, I will sorely miss hearing his voice in any future live or newly-recorded performances, since the world lost him today, July 18, 2007. May he rest in peace.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection of Viennese Operetta Music.......2004-01-03

Jerry Hadley has a nice voice, but it's not always used to his advantage. It is sweet sounding, but not especially powerful, and since there seems to be a dearth of tenors, especially younger tenors, he is sometimes cast in roles that are not the best match for his voice or talents. He is also a victim of the "crossover" rage of the late 1980's, early 1990's, where many classical musicians took their chances with a more popular repertoire, with somewhat mixed success. This collection should please both classical fans and people who like Hadley's pop standard-musical recordings.

This recording has many of the standards of German operetta as well as some lesser known pieces by composers such as Kalman, Lehar, Straus, and Korngold. His voice has a sweet sound to it and he sounds comfortable with this repertoire. Some of the pieces sound transposed down a bit particularly "Komm Zigany" from GRAFFIN MARITZA, but this does not detract from the quality of the music. Richard Bonynge conducts the orchestra that accompanies Hadley, and needless to say, the orchestra has a lush, fluid sound to it.

It should be noted that this is not Hadley's first venture into this repertoire. It should also be kept in mind that it is challenging, even daring, for any tenor to release a recording of operetta selections, especially when one considers that greats such as Richard Tauber, Nicolai Gedda, Mario Lanza, and more recently Placido Domingo have recorded some of these same pieces. Hadley does an admirable job and this recording is certainly satisfying to lovers of this enjoyable style of music.

Typical Bach - everything is perfect, but unlike contemporary music that could be classed as perfect, this album never fails to move even those that do not share Bach's religiosity.
Combine Bach with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and you have the best with the best. No-one can use power, emotion, verve, and vigour like Fischer-Dieskau. Those two together make this recording a must-have in any serious music fan's collection.

Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon has done it again. Here, on his third solo recital CD, he continues to impress; in fact, he gets better and better. He is a rarity: a subtle, intelligent tenor. Even when approaching a chestnut like "Amor ti vieta," Villazon manages something special: he gives the aria's final note a slight crescendo and diminuendo within the space of a second or two, and it adds a surge of passion that all the yelping in the world can't compare with. Similarly, there is a remarkable, berserk smile in his voice at the start of Hoffmann's "Kleinzach" ballad which becomes all the more memorable when he enters the darker, central passage of the narrative. "Recondita armonia" begins almost as a reverie; Turiddu's Farewell has an honest aura of desperation. There is spontaneity in his singing; he brings vivid personality to each character he portrays. The "Ernani" aria is little known, and the cabaletta is particularly strenuous--an ideal showcase for a spinto tenor, rather than the lyric Villazon clearly is--but with his darkish tone and strong rhythmic sense, it is impossible to fault his performance. Villazon's German is very clear but obviously newly learned and Mediterranean-tinged; his singing of the two Flotow arias, however, could not be sweeter or more right on. And the aria from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers is simply ravishing: he takes the opening phrases in one long, dolcissimo breath, sings with a dreamy legato, and switches up to the high Bs in an impeccable falsetto/voix mixte, as soft as a dove. Remarkable. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhhhh..........2006-03-31

That's the sound of me relaxing into this third (and most successful) of the vibrant tenor, Rolando Villazon's, recital cds. Most successful because it eschews, for the most part, the usual suspects with which most tenors fill their albums. (Can we please put a moritorium on "E lucevan le stelle"?) To be fair, a number of standards are on Villazon's previous cds, but here we have some wonderful suprises, particularly Strauss' "Di rigori armato il seno" (the Act 1 tenor aria from "Der Rosenkavalier.") This is one of the most beautiful arias in all of opera, as far as I'm concerned, and Villazon sings it beautifully. But then, he sings everything beautifully. There's not a single mistep on this disc; it simply confirms that Villazon's quick ascendency in the opera world hasn't been a fluke. (Unlike a Salvatore Licitra, for instance.) With tenors out there like him, Juan Diego Florez and Jonas Kaufmann, I'm feeling a lot better about the future!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection.......2006-03-20

This album is a collection of arias that really show off Villazon's voice, and the excellent singing is backed by excellent orchestra playing. I was especially impressed with the Russian arias, but the whole disc is of the highest quality. I have seen Villazon live and while his voice is not the biggest one around, his passionate singing really grabs you. In the recording studio he is definitely the ruling champ among all the new tenors.
Yet another winning recital from this great singer!

5 out of 5 stars Another winning recital.......2006-03-10

Wow! Villazon, in his 3rd recital for EMI/Virgin manages to deliver the goods yet again. Try and get the version with the bonus DVD featuring a documentary of the recording sessions. After watching this, you will realise why Villazon is so highly sought-after.

5 out of 5 stars Rolando Villazon Continues to Grow and Impress.......2006-02-21

There are times when bright young stars appear on the opera stage, especially young handsome tenors, who respond to the public noisy accolades by pushing a young voice into dangerous repertoire and over booking their roles to the detriment of their voice, becoming yesterday's lunch in record time. Such is gratefully not the case with Rolando Villazon who obviously is an intelligent musician and one aware of the pitfalls of rushing a career too quickly. He has become a solid star and with every performance and album he creates, he reassures us that he will be around for a long career.

Villazon possesses terrific stage presence, acts sensitively, and is blessed with a gloriously golden and big tenor voice that is as pliant in the bel canto roles as it is dramatic in the verismo roles. Previous recordings have suggested these qualities: this recording justifies them. In arias from Tosca, Manon Lescaut, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Un Ballo in maschera, Martha, Eugen Onegin, Der Rosenkavalier, Don Pasquale, La Favorita, Carmen, Les Pecheurs de perles, Adriana Lecouvreur, Cavalleria Rusticana, Fedora, and Ernani he moves with requisite temperament and grace.

This is an opera aria album to treasure and promises more roles on stage than we have already come to love. He is a tenor of the first order. He is well supported by conductor Michel Plasson and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 06
