Never let it be said that Maximo Park is in it for the money. The upstart British band could have easily cashed-in on the big buzz surrounding its spiky debut album, 2005's A Certain Trigger by releasing eight different versions of the disc using its healthy cache of rarities (you know, just like Bloc Party). Instead, the smartly dressed post-punkers have simply stuck all their b-sides/outtakes/demos on this cut-rate CD and opted to get on with their lives. But that doesn't make Missing Songs disposable. Expanding on the angular guitars, fractured dance rhythms and singer/resident comb-over revivalist Paul Smith's literary lyrics, there are moments here that make you want to punch Maximo Park in the face for leaving off their "real" album. "Fear of Falling" is one of those, offering a glimpse at what the Smiths would (hopefully) sound like if they came out in 2004 instead of 1984. The minimalist cover of John Lennon's "Isolation," is another one, reinterpreting the song much like you would expect it to be done by Joy Division. Naturally, there is quite a bit of filler too, but what did you expect? As a companion piece to A Certain Trigger, it's hard to beat. --Aidin Vaziri

3 out of 5 stars Non-essential Maximo.......2006-08-02

This is one of the those b-side collections that make you think, "They really picked the right tracks for the album." Not that these songs are terrible-- they're just lacking the extra spark of the songs that did make "A Certain Trigger." Most notable are "Fear of Falling," which sounds the closest to something that could've found a place on the album, and a fascinatingly lo-fi demo version of "Apply Some Pressure."

5 out of 5 stars Songs To Remember.......2006-04-10

This album is a collection of nine tracks(B Sides and non-LP) plus three original demo versions, comprising a real patchwork quilt compilation from Maximo Park. The opening track"A19"is raw and intense, and the rest of the album is very 60s and 70s influenced. These songs from Britain's most exciting new band(some would say that was open to debate) were the blueprint for greater things.
Most of us will have heard "A Certain Trigger"by now, which many would hail as Maximo's masterpiece. This album preceeds it musically but still contains the same charm, anger, intense lyrics and musical style, without as much theatricality and drama as "Trigger" contained. Still as listenable as "Trigger" however, and with so many good tunes that it's hard to choose between them all. This album carries a raw energy, powerful hooks and that urgency which is so unique and central to Maximo's music. My favourites include "A19", the dry, humourous "Year Of Doubt" and the beautiful, acoustic, somewhat sad "Stray Talk."
If you like this band, you may already have this album in your collection. If you haven't got into their music yet,try and give this a listen. It will get your attention, and hopefully keep it. As for frontman Paul Smith, with his unique hairstyle, well-I'm a total fan! I haven't seen Maximo play live yet,but will have the pleasure later in 2006. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Way better than this has any right to be.......2006-02-22

EP's and b-side albums so frequently suck that I stressed about blowing hard earned cash for this, even if it was only $9. A Certain Trigger was maybe my top album of '05 so I was prepared for disappointment. While not matching the highs of ACT, there is nothing here of decidedly lower quality (save the demos, which are worthless). The production is a bit less dense and there is less of a "wall of sound" effect than on ACT which does make this sound a bit "cheaper" but this occasionally becomes a revelation like on "Stray Talk". Worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Maximise Your Maximo .......2005-12-21

A year of impressive live performances and hot singles such as Apply Some Pressure and Graffiti have made Maximo Park's debut album A Certain Trigger a favourite for fans of the revitalised British rock movement. Frontman Paul Smith's stage presence is equal parts Ian Curtis and Ian McKellen, orating like a Shakespearean actor from a book of lyrics one minute before erupting in an angular dance aptly aping the Maximo Park sound.
With the advent of Dual Disc, tour editions and repackaged albums it seems that music fans are being suckered into buying numerous versions of their favourite albums to ensure they don't miss out on the bonus rarities. Unlike closely aligned UK group Bloc Party - who have managed to release four separate fan-screwing versions of their debut Silent Alarm this year - Maximo Park take a positive stance by offering Missing Songs as both a stand-alone disc and as a special package coupled with the staggering A Certain Trigger.
Clocking in at a little over a half hour, Missing Songs kicks off with the excellent A19 and the brief John Lennon cover Isolation, previously available as part of a Q magazine promotion. As well as the dead Beatle, XTC are also offered a tribute of sorts with the track Trial And Error, which comes close to approximating Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding's art rock sound. The acoustic Stray Talk and the Kaiser Chiefs-with-added-xylophone feel of Hammer Horror are highlights, with the gloriously tinny demos of Apply Some Pressure and Graffiti an intriguing commodity compared to the versions polished up by in-demand Brit producer Paul Epworth.
Comprising unreleased commodities and non-LP tunes from the Newcastle group, Missing Songs emerges as a worthier and more revealing album than many legitimate releases from 2005 upstarts such as Art Brut, Babyshambles and The Subways. The double-headed power of A Certain Trigger and Missing Songs prove that bringing back the comb-over is the least of Paul Smith's 2005 achievements.

5 out of 5 stars Simply, she's one of the best sopranos I've ever heard!.......2004-10-03

First of all, my review is not about this particular album. The previous reviewer compared her to Sumi Jo. If Hong should have a lesson on how to sing Korean songs from Jo, then Jo should learn how to act on the stage from Hong. I'm a Korean myself and I have almost all recordings of Ms. Jo including my favorites of her recordings, "Carnaval" and "Ariadene Aux Naxos." I also went to operas and heard both great singers on stage. I'm not an opera expert..but as an opera lover, I truely think Ms. Jo has technical perfection. However, that's not enough for singing an opera. Ms. Jo can sing beautifully in recordings but on the stage, her voice is not big enough and her acting is weak. I'm not talking about physical expression. but vocal expression. Ms. Jo is a Great coloratura soprano but I don't think she's a Great opera singer. I still remember Kei-kyung Hong in Turandot. I don't understand Italian and I didn't even have to read translations because my heart already understood every word she sings.

5 out of 5 stars I am enraptured.......2004-08-31

I listened to this because I am studying Korean, and I have been listening to anything Korean that I can get my hands on.

On my first listening I was not too impressed. But subsequent listenings have left an indelible impression of incredible beauty that grows and grows with every return.

I have only one complaint. The CD includes translations of these traditional Korean songs in English, German, and French, but without either the Korean or a transliteration.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful music oversung.......2003-10-27

I would actually give this about 3 and a half stars if that were an option. I enjoyed Hei-Kyung Hong's recital disc from 1998 immensely, and I've seen her live and she is amazing. However, on this disc of traditional Korean songs she seems to be over-singing. Her vibrato is uncontrolled and sometimes she actually sounds like a parody of an opera singer. Which is unfortunate, because her voice is gorgeous and if she had held back a little bit this album could have been amazingly beautiful.

Korean coloratura Sumi Jo is a singer who understands that you must change the way you sing when you sing different styles of music. Perhaps she could have given Ms. Hong lessons on how to sing this type of material, as she released a couple of similar albums several years ago. She still sings them "correctly," that is to say, operatically, but her vibrato doesn't get in the way and she doesn't try to sound bigger than she is. Her CD's are difficult to find, but if you can, I highly recommend them over this version.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Korean Art Songs.......2003-10-08

Considering the status of Korean Music in the classica field, it is very understandable that this CD didn't get much publicity from media like Bartoli or Fleming's new CDs.
However, in my opinion, this CD deserves some attention.
Because it has beautiful art songs from Korea. You will find something new from this CD. It can be said something Oriental flavor from some songs like "mt Paek du"
or "New Aririang". But, generally, I don't think you can tell much difference of it from the European operatic art songs especailly if you are not familiar with the language.
So I have to say this CD is worthy for listening to because it is so beautiful and moving.
My favorites are "Mt Pake-du(reminds of a piece of dramatic opera aria), "Missing You", "I want to go home", "my heart",
"Boat sailing away", "Dongshimcho".
For me, these songs are quite familiar since I have CDs by
Sumi jo and Youngok Shin for same songs.
Unlike Jo or Shin's, Hong's interpretations for songs are quite
dramatic and expressive. In terms of who was the best, I guess,it depends on songs.
For instance like "Barley field", Jo has more suitable voice.
Shin has her own merit as well for her soothing and vulnerable voice.
Anyhow, Hong did express her own color on each songs.
I loved this CD more aftering listening several times since her voice was too dramatic for some songs(needed time to get used to it).
For Marketing aspect for EMI, I am not sure if this was good decision to release Korean songs for first project by EMI for Hong(in my opinon, neither Hong or Korean art song doesnot have big name recognition in the market except New York area and Korea). She might have released more safe well-known opera arias.
Anyhow,I hope you could enjoy these songs as much as I enjoyed.

Virtual Jungle displays lots of talent and musical creativity...Lucio
Rebello, multi-instrumentalist, is the man behind this masterpiece. A mix
of Rock, Funk, Jazz, D&B, Brazilian Music, and a lot more (!)...something
truly unique! Imagine the music of David Bowie mixed with Tom Jobim, Massive
Attack and Living Colour, and you have an approximation of what this sounds
like. Don't hesitate to buy this CD, it will touch your soul!

5 out of 5 stars NEXT BEST MUSIC........2005-02-24

You gotta listen to this music, it's just like the fresh pop rock breeze!

It's always so cool getting to listen to new artists and feeling there are still talented people writing songs.

I could say there's a lot of influences going on here, things like Jeff Buckley, Bjork, Living Colour, Radiohead and some of the great brazilian artists......yet new and original.

Anyways, if you're up to the next best music, here's a great piece.

        5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GREAT FIND!.......2005-02-23

This CD has become a permanent fixture in my playlist. Mr. Rebello's fresh pop-rock grooves are infused with Bossa Nova melodies, electronica beats, and spiced with jazz and funk undertones. I can listen to his music all day long.
By far the best CD I've bought in months!
        I highly recomend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Good taste is a gift..........2005-02-23

And so this guy is gifted... and besides the good taste to write great compositions and make fine arrangements, he is also an gifted artist to create wonderful performances with an astonishing voice... It's amazing when you realize it is all (well, almost all) done by one guy only...

I can only guess his influence, but, even so, I would say Buckley, Tool, Living Colour, Soundgarden, Sting, David Torn, and mainly a lot of Brazilian music that you can feel blended through the album...

If he sounds like this in the debut album, no one can really say what he will become in a few years... except that it will be great...
