Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:

Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Despite a famously raving review by American film critic grand dame Pauline Kael (who dubbed it "the most powerfully erotic movie ever made") Bernardo Bertolucci's often unfocused 1973 meditation on sexuality, existential angst and inventive uses of butter can now seem as quaintly compelling as wide collared blazers and velveteen trousers. Indeed, Argentine jazz saxophonist Gato Barbieri's evocative score has aged better than much of the film. Bertolucci's conceit to structure the film loosely around the erotic duel that's at the heart of the Tango led him to seek a non-traditional musician to score it (Tango legend Astor Piazzolla was rumored to have been an early consideration). Once selected, the then-largely obscure Barbieri originally produced a series of brief, Tango-jazz fusion cues that functioned more as emotional punctuation than traditional underscore. Those musical snippets were later re-arranged and re-recorded by Oliver Nelson for the wildly successful soundtrack album; it would be another quarter century before Barbieri's own recordings were issued, albeit briefly. Both Barbieri's and Nelson's work are reunited here in a comprehensive edition, emotive fusion-jazz that--for better or worse--virtually opened the door to mainstream jazz successes like Kenny G and the so-called Wave radio format. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Steeped in controversy upon its release in 1973, director Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris has since been called everything from nonutilitarian pornography to a cinematic masterpiece. Two key elements that Bertolucci utilized to breath life into Tango's nihilistic themes and the dark, obsessive relationship at its core were Marlon Brando's harrowing, largely improvised performance and the erotically charged jazz score of self-taught Latin sax virtuoso Gato Barbieri. While the musician's main theme has become a much-covered jazz standard, it's but a tantalizingly sexy sample of the cross-cultural stylings at work in this masterful score. While Barbieri rerecorded the core of his Tango music in lush, fleshier arrangements for the soundtrack album's initial release, this Ryko edition (nearly twice the length of the original) augments those tracks with a compelling half-hour suite of cues culled directly from the film's scoring sessions. By turns stark and sentimental, erotic and experimental, these previously unreleased cues form a revelatory new "second movement" to Barbieri's hauntingly familiar score. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

A CLASSIC REPACKAGED...FINALLY!.......2000-11-07
Granted, I've listened to these songs so many times in the passing decades that at moments they teeter into parodies of tango, but that's not Gato's fault; it's just cognitive dissonance. Aside from the great "Ballad" treatment of the raw main theme, there's the rapturous "La Vuelta", "Return" and, best of all, "Why Did She Choose You?", which will knock over anyone who spent a rainy day in Europe loving or lamenting love with a cigarette and a cup of espresso.
Special mention must be made of the original sound cues included herein for the first time on disc. I was always peeved they were missing from the 72 release. The killer cut is the first of the suite of 28 cues which was used over the Francis Bacon paintings for the Main Title sequence. Oh, this is so low and raw and beautiful, and Bacon's paintings of distorted men and women are forever wedded in my mind with these mournful strains.
Jazz Maestro Oliver Nelson has done an excellent job of draping Gato's gutter-cry sax with lush strings, and the orchestrations get even more interesting on the "Suite" of cues to follow. In the decades since this film arrived, I've yet to hear another score with these peculiar colors, which for lack of a more appropriate word, can only be described as "uterine" in the best sense.
Praise to Rykodisc for going the extra mile here. I do wish the cover art was a booklet instead of a fold out, and an enhanced trailer clip would have been swell, but, nah, small complaint.

Ms Anders has a very pleasant Jazz styled voice and her singing is relentlessly sensuous! (whatever THAT means! ;-))
Gabriela Anders' instrumental ensemble adopts a very suave and low key Latin approach. There is some very tasteful acoustic guitar, keyboard and accordion playing on this album. Some nice random ambient elements also keep the instrumental aspect of this album agreeably and tastefully "left of centre".
Needless to say, this the sort of thing that Robot-of-Romance, Norah Jones, was probably trying to do on her hapless first album. Gabriela Anders is the real thing and a 'class act' unlike her aforementioned peer. Last Tango in Rio is ideal late night listening - with a glass of wine, candle light and someone you fancy!
Less smooth jazz, more tango ... works for me!.......2005-03-13
In reading previous reviews I noticed one reviewer who first heard of this album in the L.A. TIMES as I did, but was not happy with the results. While I'm a satisfied customer, this disc may not be for those who are looking for a more traditional jazz vocal approach. Granted, there is a perhaps-confusing "FILE UNDER: JAZZ" reminder on the back cover. Yet Anders' style is much more in line with the current generation of Brazilian singers (Bebel Gilberto, etc.) than with most so-called jazz singers. RIO is nothing like Diana Krall's albums of pop standards, for one. While Anders does interpret a number of pop classics that jazz vocalists have frequently turned to ("Love Is Here To Stay," "Body And Soul"), they are reconfigured to fit Anders' style. The difference is particularly striking on "God Bless The Child," which in my opinion is one of the album's highlights but may be too big of a change for some. To each their own, and in my case RIO is much more in line with what I want to hear than the other Anders album I mentioned.

Comprehensive collection of modern Americana.......2001-10-13
John Murphy, who plays all of Bolcom's piano rags on this collection, is a personal friend of the composer and presumably has his seal of approval. It's good to have all of this enjoyable music in one place; still, I can't muster as much enthusiasm for this album as I would like. Murphy's technique, though serviceable, seems taxed by the more demanding moments in these frequently virtuosic pieces, and the resulting lack of rhythmic precision, in particular, frequently robs the music of its full effect. He also applies the pedal more liberally than I personally like. Nevertheless, the chances of anyone else recording all of Bolcom's 29 rags (including seven unpublished pieces) in the near future is remote, so this is an album fans of this composer ought to have.

The consummate Schicekle.......2004-01-07
When my wife gave this to me for Christmas, I turned it on and thought it was a live performance, like the first albums--and like the Schickele performances we've happily attended. It took a few seconds to realize that it was a mock performance, of the Turtle Mountain Naval Base Tactical Wind Ensemble (who are also, as announced by Professor Schickele, busy protecting North Dakota from naval attack, a clever comment making the CD all the more worth it!) at a convenient North Dakota location.
As a Wagnerian, I was attracted to "Last Tango in Beyreuth," the last musical number on the CD. If I may paraphrase Schickele's statement of a long time ago, when you listen to it, be prepared to hear things you've heard before (PDQ's real talent having been in plagiarism, after all.)
And, since Schickele was a bassoon major, it's amusing that he picks on that instrument--for perhaps the best piece ever composed for bassoon and tuba. Then there are the pieces by the Tennessee Bassoon Quartet, an ensemble for which there are surely limited venues...
I heard one of PDQ's other numbers, Concerto for Two Piano's vs. Orchestra a few years ago. Schickele gave an hysterical historical presentation on that piece. I talked with him about it afterwards and suggested that too be put onto a CD. He said in essence that the market may not have room for it these days; renouned violinists and pianists are not sellable these days. That's distressing as Schickele's comedy form is beyond genius, and unique. So, while you can, listen to what's available. This is a gem!
Hysterical and not at all Esoterical.......2001-01-06
Not to be taken seriously..........2000-10-08
This disc, played by the Turtle Mountain Naval Base Tactical Wind Ensemble with some help from the astounding Tennessee Bassoon Quartet, was made during a concert at the University and is introduced by Professor Schickele. The event was clearly organised as an attempt at making the music of P. D. Q. Bach accessible to regular concert goers. It did not succeed: as the intermittent speech between items shows, the programme of P. D. Q. Bach's various works for wind orchestra and percussion managed to drive away not only most of the audience but even the orchestra. Furthermore, the music itself is shambolic: a complete waste of time that makes one wonder how Professor Schickele ever managed to get it published."
Actually, I only half-meant what I said above. This really is the ultimate in what is known as the letting down of hair amongst musicians: every so often, even the most serious of concert performers love to play something that is light-hearted and to be taken simply at face-value, without stuffy programme notes or flambuoyant virtuosity. And P. D. Q. Bach's music, faithfully "edited" by Peter Schickele, is not just light-hearted: it's downright flippant! This disc is a superb pick-me-up in cheerless moments, an entertaining fifty-odd minutes of musical mayhem pushed to interesting and comical limits, and an excellent gift for any musical members of the family who want to add a bit of zest to any classical music collection. Purists may scoff at the fact that this whole thing pokes fun at the music of Bach and other great composers, but it's good clean fun that still retains an element of musicality. Bravo! I just hope they invent a cure for split sides soon....

Moving........2002-03-17
The songs, as a whole, have a feeling of last moment, a feeling of something important terminating. This is the music of the last party. On "Begin-ing", we are asked "to imagine there is only one starry night left till the end of the world... What would we do?" Really, I don't know. What would I do? What would you do? Something did terminate but not everything. The last song takes us on a new journey to a vague destination. Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse, but all is not terminated.
These Balkan tangos are, I don't know how to say it otherwise, they are important. They got here just in time. They have tastes of tango, gypsy music, avant-garde jazz and rumba. There is a good measure of energy and hope, along with the bittersweet sadness.
It has been a long time since I bought a CD with that much integrity and sense of completness.

To speak of Conlon Nancarrow's music for player piano shouldn't be mistaken to suggest some still broader range of musical output of which the composer's piano rolls are but a subset. Quite the contrary: Nancarrow's meticulous scores--generally unplayable, at least by most primates--are the body of his life's work. This five-CD set contains dozens upon dozens of his studies, each a fairly self-contained exploration of tempo, pitch, rhythm, counterpoint--and the interaction between pairings of those core musical categories. Certainly, this is "difficult" music, hard on the ears, off-kilter in a manner that both demands attention and may repulse listeners unfamiliar with experimental composition. After initial exposure, this collection is the sort of thing that sits on the shelf for some time, before your imagination breaks its internal code. Once that code is broken, though, the vast life inherent in this "mechanical" music becomes almost intoxicating. On some of the quieter pieces, the piano's tone is similar to that of a harpsichord. On others, the palimpsest of ragtime is undeniable. Yes, some pieces seem overly chaotic, but spend some time with them and you'll see, in your mind's eye, dozens of hands working the keys. --Marc WeidenbaumCustomer Reviews:
symphony of a thousand (pianos).......2004-11-15
Hopefully this description will give you some indication of what you're in for with these wonderful studies for player piano. Because Nancarrow was working with these mechanical instruments, he could combine complex ratios of rhythms against each other. Some are so subtle that no human could replicate them exactly. This is not to say that the music is dehumanized. It has a great deal of warmth and humor. What Nancarrow gains from the very mechanical nature of these instruments is part of the appeal.
These studies are as rugged and individual as the composer and, as mentioned earlier, Ligeti's Etudes would never have been possible without Nancarrow's wonderful music.
piano revelations........2004-02-22
Dizzying experiments by a brilliant maverick.......2004-01-09
You may not be quite lucid after hearing something like Study No. 25, which has 1,028 notes in its final 12 seconds, or one of my favorites, the so-called "Canon X" (No. 21). It begins with two musical lines at opposite ends of the keyboard: the bass starts slowly and gradually accelerates, the treble begins in a super-fast blur of notes at the highest end and gradually descends, becoming ever-slower. In the middle of the piece, these two lines cross each other before they continue on their separate ways.
In study after study, Nancarrow explores complex relationships between meter and pitch, most of the time with absolutely astounding results. Some of these pieces are a bit more relaxed, with blues and jazz elements giving them an almost homespun quality. But soon the blizzard of notes returns, as the composer makes full use of the player piano's capabilities. You almost can't believe what you are hearing.
A word of caution: You probably don't want to program all five discs straight through. Well recorded as it is, the timbre of the instrument becomes wearing on the ear after awhile. Give your ears a break and to listen to something completely different, like Debussy, Copland -- or maybe Bob Dylan.
An essential collection for some -- I'm not sure whom! -- but something every listener should hear at least once.
Intriguing Ideas, Experiment upon Experiment.......2000-12-30
For me, Nancarrow's work functions best when he illustrates the sheer possibility of the keyboard freed from the limitations of a human player or players. The player piano in Nancarrow's work is an acrobat, ready to twirl on wires from which human piano players are unable to dangle. I find least satisfying the experimental works which are centered less on the possibility of the player piano, and more on the synthesis of 30s jazz into a unique classical aesthetic. I freely confess to being a listener rather than a musician in my own right, and some of the experiments just don't keep me hooked.
Still, if you're longing for something quite different and of high quality, Nancarrow may be what you are seeking.
