Only ONE thing could have made this a better CD..........2007-01-10
This awesome rock & roll album would have been even better had it included just one thing: the SINGLE version of "Free Ride", available on the "Edgar Winter Collection" from Rhino. It was the followup single to their huge hit "Frankenstein". Like Three Dog Night and a few other artists back in roughly that same time frame, a trip back into the studio was made to create even hotter versions of the songs to be played on the radio. The single version of "Free Ride" is just that much hotter, that much punchier and that much more full of life....and was a huge hit itself! One listen and you'll see what I mean. I'm not saying the album track isn't good...I'm just saying the single version just jumps right out at you, daring you to resist it. As for the rest of the album, I can't say anything that most of these other reviewers have said. One of the best of the 70s, full of great rock & roll music and a pure joy to listen to!
Monster Album!.......2006-11-26
Arguably, Edgar Winter Group's best album, this chart topper fused standard rock with `monster rock' and plenty of synthesizers. Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer cut loose with these self penned songs. "Hangin' Around" and "Alta Mira" are fun dance rock numbers that portray Winter at his best. "Free Ride" and "We All Had A Real Good Time" became FM rock standards with their `party on' style. Not to pigeon-hole themselves as purely hard rock, "Autumn" is a rare and unexpected ballad showcasing the groups songwriting skill. Of course, "Frankenstein" was the monster hit here and it combined a new found use of loud drums and maximum synthesizer along with unique guitar riffs and Winter's own splendid saxophone. It's a killer album that stands the test of time.
Remarkable! Exciting and Yet Oddly Charming.......2006-07-17
I had really ever only known about Edgar Winter from their occasional spots on classic rock radio, with their tunes Frankenstein and Free Ride, never really thinking about what other type of music they made and shrugged them off as no more than a one-hit wonder.
But one I picked up the album about six months back and have listened to it probably fifty times through. It is very hard for myself to start playing it and switch to something out on my playlist without listening to it in its entirety. While none of the songs in my mind (except for Frankenstein) truly stick out (which is possibly why it is not more well known,) the album gels together as a whole so well that few albums match it in terms of pure consistency.
While many of the songs seem simple in appearance, the instrumentation, the dynamics, and the full-blown singing of the more uptempo songs give a level of sophistication, yet remarkable, fun sound to each and every song, all the while staying unique from every other. Added to this, is the even more surprising fact that the two love songs, Round and Round, and Autumn, are two of the most beautiful songs to ever come out of a rock album, let alone a hard rock one.
Hanging Around is one of the best openers one could ever hope to have for an album, infectious, fun, spirited, truly awesome.
When It Comes is possibly the raunchiest sounding Edgar ever sounded (if that's really him singing, I'm not really sure since it sounds as if there are nine different voices singing each of the songs with lyrics), other great, fun sounding song.
Alta Mira is very quirky, yet charming song that you can't help but sing along to. Has an almost Jamaician sound that makes it all the more infectious.
Free Ride needs no explanation, as it's impossible to live past the age of 10 and not have heard the song at least once.
Undercover Man is probably the only weak song on the album if only for the ending which I think it stretched out just a bit too long. Although, it's Edgar in very fine form in terms of loud, almost off-kilter singing.
Round & Round is possibly my favorite song on the album, with its wonderful mix and acoustic and almost country-rock sound. Beautiful.
A ridiculous change of pace from Round & Round (although that's not a bad thing.) The song is basically self-evident from the title... Rock and Roll Boogie Woogie Blues. It delivers perfectly.
Autumn, as said before, is quite possibly the most beautiful rock song I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Beyond gorgeous.
And almost lastly, another huge change of pace with quite possibly a song that perfectly exemplifies the college spirit (woot), with We All Had a Real Good Time. If there's a better song out there that keeps the fun, youthful spirit of us kids and of the basic tenets of Rock n' Roll, I've yet to hear it.
Well, if you're not convinced, then its at the fault of this reviewer and not the album.. for it is truly one of the best hard rock has to offer. Better than anything Skynyrd or Ted Nugent or Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin has to offer. And that's no lie. A wonderful standout from 1972 (although it's difficult for me to say that definitively, since I was -13 at the time.)
A classic Rock And Roll Masterpiece.......2006-07-07
I purchased this album only yesterday and have listened to it over and over again. This is truly one of rock's few masterpieces. Hangin around is a fun opening song. Alta Mira is a nice rock and roll song. Free Ride is great well mixed too. And who could forget Frankenstein the masterpiece of masterpieces this is the best song in the whole world. You will be happy with your purchase.
Perfect Album..............2006-03-13
About the time this record came out, but before I ever heard of it, I saw the EWG at a roller rink in Elizabeth, NJ with my friends. They opened up with "Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll" but unlike the White Trash version with horns, it was dominated by Ronnie Montrose' raunchy guitar and I fell in love. I went as soon as I could to Korvette's, where I bought most of my records in those days, to get the new LP that Edgar mentioned while on stage. I took one look at the cover and said, "What is this......" I was happy that I bought it and I still go back to it frequently. In fact, I am probably in the minority here, but "Frankenstein" is my least favorite song and I usually skip it. But listen to all the other songs, starting with "Hangin' Around" and "When it Comes" and you will be hooked quick. The slow ballad "Autumn" and the latin sounding "Alta Mira" sound different, but all the tracks add up to one of the greatest LP's ever recorded. In my opinion, Edgar Winter never reached this level again.

The Whole Blue Eyed Gospel Soul Thing Rolled Into One.........2007-02-13
White Trash were an interesting band of jazz, soul, funk, gospel all rolled into one large cacophony of sound reminiscent of what was going down at the time with the likes of Delaney @ Bonnie, Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Blood Sweat @ Tears, The Flock..The maniacal screaming albino keyboard rocker Edgar, whose blues man brother Johnny Winter joins him on a track released this 2 LP LIVE set that is all shucking and jive, good musicians with the likes of Rick Derringer and Jerry LaCroix, an audible horn section ..all pretty unique stuff where musicianship was all very important.
Edgar Winter was a trip.
Great album -- really captures the concert feeling.......2007-02-03
This one is about having a great time with a BIG band, soulful grooves, horns, and a lot (maybe too much) of screaming. It's a little sloppy at times, "Tobacco Road" goes on a little too long, but you also get Jon Smith's wonderful sax work, some of Rick Derringer's best playing, and an overall feeling of energy and interaction and love of the music that puts a smile on your face. I had the good luck to see this band in the early 70s at the Academy of Music, and while I kept waiting for Johnny to show up (he didn't), it was still one of the most exciting (and loud) nights of live music I've ever experienced. "Save the Planet" is like going to church.
UNDERRATED.......2007-01-09
AS MY TITLE INDICATES >>THIS WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING LIVE BANDS ON ANY TOUR. THIS GROUP IN MY OPINION WAS VASTLY UNDER-RATED. 'ROCK AND SOUL' LIKE YOU NEVER HEARD IT>THESE GUYS WERE SO GOOD ,THEY SHUOLD HAVE BEEN BLACK. yES A TERRIBLE RECORDING , NO DOUBT, BUT YOU GET THE 'LIVE FEELING FROM THIS RECORDING, AND THE ARRANGEMENTS IN REGARDS TO ALL THE MUSIC >>>>IS FANTASTIC.i OWN THE ALBUM, AND THE CD >? I LOVE THE HORRIBLE RECORDING ON THE ALBUM>>THE CD HAS LOST ALL THE FAT IN THE BOTTOM END .
Peels the paint off the walls.......2006-02-11
I first heard this album in the early 70's in high school. Now I've turned my own kids (21, 20, 16, 16 and 13) onto it. They can't believe that you could once go into a club and hear bands like this LIVE. They only listen to classic stuff I give them now; there's nothing on the radio that remotely comes close to the gut-wrenching energy of great musicians playing live at full throttle. If you only know Edgar Winter from his "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" days, you've got an eye-opening experience ahead of you. Listen in particular to Edgar's 18 second full-throated stratospheric sustained vocal in Tobacco Road. You could refinish furniture by putting it in front of the speakers with this song turned up. An absolute MUST HAVE CD.
"People keep askin' me - where's your brother?".......2005-11-23
It's truly a shame that more people aren't familiar with this album. Simply put, Roadwork has got to be one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. From the gospel-tinged "Save the Planet" to the raw blues of "Tobacco Road," this recording just grabs you right from the first song and just won't let go. In addition to being an amazing keyboard and saxophone player, Edgar Winter is an incredible vocalist. When you add the incendiary Jerry La Croix, an equally amazing vocalist, the result sends chills down your spine. For you guys who are air guitar specialists, I recommend that you check out Rick Derringer's rendition of Chuck Berry's "Back in the USA." Derringer proves beyond a doubt why he's a legend on the six string. But it's not enough just to have Rick Derringer on the scene. Edgar introduces his brother Johnny for a fiery version of "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo."There are so many highlights on this recording that it's hard to select just one as a favorite. Certainly one of the highlights is "Tobacco Road." After you've heard Edgar Winter's White Trash work out on this cut, it's just like there's nothing more to be said. If I had to pick just one cut to represent the genius and passion of this album, I'd go with the old rhythm and blues classic "Turn on Your Love Light." Listen as the horns blast out that classic riff and then let Jerry La Croix take you on a trip where the soul of man never dies. This is rock n roll with a vengeance! Or, as Jerry exhorts the crowd at the Apollo: "If you feel like lettin' it out, hot damn, let it out."

While his blues-rock guitar-god brother Johnny forged a fiery career that would influence Stevie Ray Vaughan and a whole generation of showy young ax-slingers, young Edgar Winter followed a more idealistic, fashion-be-damned muse that bounded across R&B, jazz, gospel, and rock borders with gleeful abandon. Those influences bubble up throughout this 15-track anthology of the younger multi-instrumentalist Winter's first decade of recording, insuring a compelling listening experience by the sheer breadth of its ambition. Indeed, there are several Winters on display here: the genre-bending artist whose debut album could deliver convincing jazz fusion ("Entrance," "Fire and Ice"), then turn on a dime to pump out a blues-and-gospel drenched version of Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road" with brother Johnny's band; the R&B sparkplug of White Trash, the proto-Blues Brothers show band of "Keep Playin' that Rock & Roll" and "Give It Everything You've Got"; and the monster hitmaker of "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" (produced by longtime Winter cohort Rick Derringer and featuring an underrated powerhouse quartet that featured guitar star Ronnie Montrose and vocalist Dan Hartman). --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
shocked about no treatment.......2007-03-21
If this is supposed to be a complete retrospect of Edgar's career, why is there then NOTHING from the "Shock Treatment album on this collection? Having said that, you might want to pick up the "Collection" from 1989 on Rhino!
Timeless..........2004-09-01
This 2002 release is a remastered 15 song retrospective of his 5 Epic albums. It includes a 16 page booklet with liner notes and photos. The diversity of his music is amazing. Clive Davis gave Winter lots of money and full musical freedom to sign with Epic which Edgar took full advantage of. His first stage leaned heavily in a jazz vein, and then he entered his second stage by forming White Trash with the extraordinary vocal talents of Jerry La Croix. White Trash was sort of a cross between Blues Brothers style blues and Sly & the Family Stone with a mix of rock, soul, blues and `honest to goodness' gospel. Then he went into a pop/rock direction with his electronic rock smash "Frankenstein". Various musicians who played in the different incarnations include Rick Derringer, Ronnie Montrose, Dan Hartman, Tommy Shannon and his brother Johnny. One thing that all these different styles of music do share is that they are all sound timeless. I highly recommend this CD.
"Frankenstein".......2003-11-20
This is my first introduction to Edgar Winter and i already love his music. Edgar winter is one of the most underated innovative artist of all time. His Brother is Johnny Winter one of the best rock/blues artist of the late 60s and 70s who influenced a lot of artist including Stevie Ray Vaughan. Edgar & Johnny came to epic at the same time. johnny went one way and edgar went another. Edgar went the more idealistic way, Shocking people with his unheard of innovative way of playing. Using music from almost every category such as rock, gospel, jazz, blues, soul, funk, classical and probably more. Critics were stunned. When he created The album and band "white trash" heads were turning. There live playing rip the house down & never dissapointed. Like "Sly & The Family Stone" he is way ahead of his time.
I can't wait until sony/legacy remasters all of his albums. This is a good start. Songs like frankenstein, Dying to live, fire and ice, turn on your lovelight and free ride give me chills. the only dissapointment is some of the songs are the short versions. But if your just a beginner star with this.

Customer Reviews:
FINALLY on Compact Disc!.......2007-07-05
I am so happy to FINALLY see this released on CD! This album was one of my recommendations to Wounded Bird records after they re-released 1979's "The Edgar Winter Album" and 1981's "Standing On Rock". I note the other review of this album here calls it the "Swan Song" for the Edgar Winter Group - perhaps in name only.
Edgar's further releases, such as 1975's "Jasmine Nightdreams" also included Dan Hartman, Chuck Ruff & Rick Derringer, not to mention performances from his brother Johnny, but it was released as an Edgar Winter album, not The Edgar Winter Group. Following this album, he released albums as a solo artist.
This album was an excellent release. I don't agree that it's not on the same par with 'They Only Come Out At Night' and 'Shock Treatment', it's a completely type of album, different styles of music and writing and non-conceptual.
There are several great tunes on this album, including "Cool Dance", "People Music" [a staple of Edgar's], "Nothing Good Comes Easy", "Paradise/Sides", "Diamond Eyes", and the de rigueur synthesizer-based instrumental "Chainsaw".
I have ordered this already from Wounded Bird and am anxious to check out their remastering job. They did an INCREDIBLE job with The Edgar Winter Album and Standing on Rock. I've purchased several copies of this album on vinyl, but it does not transfer well to CD.
If you love the music of Edgar Winter, you will love this album. It was a bit overlooked upon its release. He wound up releasing two albums in 1975, this one, and "Jasmine Nightdreams", which is an absolute STELLAR album. If you enjoy the talent and virtuosity of Edgar Winter, this album definitely has a place in your collection.
Swan song for the group.......2007-06-27
This was the third and final album for the Edgar Winter Group. After two very strong albums ("They Only Come Out At Night" and "Shock Treatment") this album was a disappointment. It was a commercial flop and the Group broke-up soon after its release. Unlike on previous albums, Rick Derringer does more than play lead guitar, he sings and writes songs. Unfortunately, his songs here are not that good. My favorite song is the Dan Hartman - Edgar Winter collaboration, "People Music". It is in a similar style as previous EWG hits like "Free Ride" and "Rivers Risin". "Diamond Eyes" and "Let's Do It Together Again" are ok, but probably would not have made it on either of the two previous albums (which could be said for most of the songs on this album). All-in-all, this was a weak swan song and is recommended only for avid EWG fans that have to have all 3 of their albums. After this, Dan Hartman would go on to a modestly successful solo career before passing away in 1994.

There's a certain kind of music... got to make you jump and shout!.......2006-11-30
The late 60s / early 70s was a time of remarkable innovation in pop music. (The Beatles were at their zenith; Woodstock had just happened; artists were experimenting.) One of the directions was "rock music with a horn section." (Think "Blood, Sweat and Tears," "Traffic," and "Chicago Transit Authority" ... before they shortened their name and started pumping out the smarmy FM-radio ballads.)
Edgar Winter's "White Trash" band emerged from that era, and this debut recording stands up very nicely, 35 years later. Some of it is rockin' soul music, some of it is soulful rock music; all of it features a fat horn section and the vocal stylings of Jerry LaCroix and the ultra-white Edgar Winter. (He and his previously-famous brother, blues guitar-slinger Johnny, are both albino dudes, with white skin and pink eyes. But you'd never guess it by listening to 'em... if I can say so without offending anybody, their music is quite a few shades darker!)
Edgar tells the story of his rise to fame in the autobiographical song "Keep Playin' that Rock 'n' Roll." (a line of which is the title to this review.) It's a good 'un. Other personal favorites: "Save the Planet" (Edgar was WAY before Algore's time, and is more convincing to boot), the blues-soaked "I've Got News for You," and "Good Morning Music."
Blazing rock n' roll.......2006-01-20
I first heard and saw Edgar Winter as a teenager in 1972 quite by accident. I purchased tickets to see Humble Pie at Atlanta's old Municipal Auditorium, White Trash was the opening act, and guess who blew who off the stage? I was mesmerised by the sound and energy of Edgar & White Trash, so was my girlfriend (boy did I get lucky that night!). I soon purchased this album and 'Roadwork' and nearly wore the grooves off both. Keep Playin' That Rock N' Roll is in my opinion the quintesentail rock party tune, can't quit playing air guitar to it. What a great first release by an artist who could not survive the disco blitz of the late 70's. Every rock/blues fan should own 'White Trash'.
First Rocker for Edgar a Gem.......2005-10-12
I first heard Edgar Winter's White Trash as the opening act for Alice Cooper (it was my girlfriend's idea) in a packed arena in the spring of 1972. I was amazed; they stole the show, and I went right out the next day and bought this album.
A better live act than a studio one ("Roadwork", their only other release before Edgar turned pop-disco, is an incredible album), the debut album is nevertheless well-done, and a number of the songs reflect the energy of the group's live performances, especially the gospel numbers "Fly Away" and "Save the Planet", and the Ray Charles cover "I've Got News for You."
You can almost feel the sweat, sawdust, and smoke eminating from the pores of your speakers, and Jerry LaCroix's gravelly voice both blends with and counterpoints Edgar's high-pitched wails as the horns drive the engine.
They reunited for an album years later called "Edgar Winter's White Trash Revisited." A studio effort, it didn't have the quality of tunes or the drive of the original, but it still had those great voices. I'd love to see it on disc one day, as well as the live album Edgar did with his brother Johnny that featured one of the best rock and roll fifties-sixties medleys I've ever heard.
Edgar's debut album, "The Edgar Winter Experience", was a great 'small' album featuring Edgar singing a dozen of his own original jazz tunes, a totally different style. Love to hear that one again, too.
Till then, I'll groove on "White Trash" and "Roadwork."
Underrated Gem.......2005-04-30
On this brass-heavy hard rock album, there is not one track that is not wonderful. From the foot-stomping "Give It Everything You Got" to the burlesque beat of "I've Got News for You", this is a fine, fine album. Standout tracks include "Dying to Live", "Fly Away" and "You Were My Life", although ALL tracks resonate.
If you like Chicago, Blood, Sweat and Tears or Springsteen and the E-Street band, you gotta get this CD.
Edgar and the Boys Cook on this one!.......2005-03-18
How does one describe Edgar and White Trash? You have to hear 'em to to believe 'em. The album is one of those few great truly creative moments in American music. I first heard this ablbum when it originally came out in 1971, and I've never forgotten any of these songs. Get it and enjoy!
By the way, if you ever get a chance to Johnny Winter's "Jazz Blues Fusion" (1962?) that also is a truly fabulous experience.
Who are these Winter brothers???!!!

Album Description
2007 two-fer from the Rock great features two of his classic '70s albums on one disc. They Only Come Out At Night (1972) will forever be remembered for spawning the huge hit singles 'Frankenstein' and 'Free Ride', but there's plenty more to appreciate on this stellar release. From 'Hangin' Around', to the pretty melodies of 'Round & Around' and 'Autumn', the set collects ten outstanding cuts, played with fervor by Edgar Winter, Chuck Ruff, Dan Hartman, Randy Jo Hobbs and Ronnie Montrose, along with guest artist/producer Rick Derringer. Beginning with 1974's Shock Treatment's answer to the previous album's 'Hangin' Around', 'Some Kinda Animal', the band moves into the excellent blues torcher 'Easy Street', which is painted with highlights from the substantial saxophone talent of Winter, not to mention some of his finest singing. Like They Only Come Out At Night, this recording includes a pair of haunting ballads, 'Maybe Someday You'll Call My Name' and 'Someone Take My Heart Away'. Gott Discs. 2007.

Customer Reviews:
Finally!!!.......2007-06-18
These albums made Edgar Winter a star, even though much of their success was due to the late Dan Hartman. The first hit off of "They Only Come Out At Night" was Winter's rocker "Frankenstein" which caused many to assume that the album was a "heavy" rock album. But the album has a wide variety of rock, blues, pop, and even country ("Round and Round" should have been a country hit). Also includes the hit "Free Ride" and minor hit "Hangin Around." Not a bad song on it. The only bad thing about the album is the cover. I really don't care for seeing Edgar Winter in drag. I remember many record stores used to display the back cover because many people found the front offensive. It probably hurt sales. But the music is great!
"Shock Treatment" was an outstanding follow-up. Rick Derringer replaces Ronnie Montrose on guitar, but does not contribute any songs or lead vocals. It is classic rock / pop at its finest. It includes the top 40 hit "River's Risin'" but several other songs received air-play and should have been big hits, including: "Easy Street", "Maybe Someday You'll Call My Name", and "Sundown." Not a bad song on it. The late Dan Hartman really shines on this album. His songs were more commercial than Winter's. He should have received equal billing in this group. Highly recommended!
The Edgar Winter Group's Two Releases On One Disc & Remastered Too! .......2007-05-23
The British Label Gott Discs releases The Edgar Winter Group's two albums "They Only Come Out At Night" and "Shock Treatment" on one disc and remastered too! I have to admit I only bought this disc for 1972's "They Only Come Out At Night" as it was a landmark album for Edgar in not only was it a masterpiece of rock & pop but also had some of the finest musicians around including Ronnie Montrose on guitar and Dan Hartman on bass/vocals and of course Edgar on keyboards/sax and vocals. The album produced one massive hit in "Frankenstein", a five minute synthesizer based instrumental loaded with special effects thrown in for good measure. The followup hit "Free Ride" is a hook ridden pop rock lover's delight with Dan Hartman doing the vocals. But the album also included other excellent songs as well such as "Hangin' Around", "Round & Round", "We All Had A Real Good Time" plus more. The following album "Shock Treatment" released in 1974 while disappointing when comepared to "They Only Come Out At Night" still featured a number of catchy tunes such as the hit "River's Risin'" as well as the jazzy "Easy Street", "Rock & Roll Woman" and "Someone Take My Heart Away". Member changes include of the addition of longtime guitar wiz/artist/producer Rick Derringer who replaced Ronnie Montrose who left to form his own band "Montrose". Derringer's addition to the band was an asset as not only does he sing on numerous tracks but his lead guitar riffs are always amazing. The sound quality of this disc is excellent due to remastering and blows the ancient American non-remastered versions of these cd's away (the later now OOP). A must have for classic rock collectors!

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE EDGAR WINTER COMPILATION........2007-03-05
I was just conversing with my friend Metamorpho recently and commending him on a job well done on writing a fantastic review on Johnny Winter's legendary "SAINTS AND SINNERS" album. I also told him that coincidently, I was contemplating on writing a review on his brother Edgar and his legendary compilation album entitled "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION." Without further delay, I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION" by one of Rock's legendary bands. I give you one of Texas' pride and joy's who also just so happens to be the brother of another great legend, MR. JOHNNY WINTER. However, this review will highlight the one and only, MR. EDGAR WINTER. "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION" was originally released in 1989 on Compact Disc on the Rhino Records label which is manufactured by CBS Records Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
EDGAR WINTER will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for being extremely versatile in playing different music styles consistantly well. WINTER would be known for his mixture and blend of Blues, Funk, Country Rock and Jazz. In a way, WINTER was the white man's answer to SLY & THE FAMILY STONE. This compilation album highlights EDGAR WINTER'S two legendary bands, EDGAR WINTER'S WHITE TRASH BAND and THE EDGAR WINTER GROUP. There are so many musicians in both these bands combined that I will just list the main musicians that were widely known prior to joining WINTER'S band. WINTER would recruit well know musicians such as the late great bassist Dan Hartman, lead and rhythm guitarist Rick Derringer, lead guitarist Ronnie Montrose and drummer Chuck Ruff. Combine them together with EDGAR WINTER and you have a portion of WINTER'S WHITE TRASH BAND and the almost completed EDGAR WINTER GROUP. EDGAR WINTER has released some great albums and some great hit songs throughout his whole career up to this very day. This music collection contains all of WINTER'S hits spanning from the 1971 to 1976 period. In my opinion, "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION" is a true testament of the genius and musical creativity of a special unique band and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was indeed, ahead of their time.
Now its time to let the music do all of the talking. This disc jumps right in and begins with the funkish Rocker "Give It Everything You Got," the Jazzy Rocker "Easy Street," the soulful Rocker "Hangin' Around," the beautiful smooth mellow tempo "Tell Me In A Whisper," the forever popular legendary WINTER trademark funkish Rocker "Free Ride," the funkish soulful "Cool Fool," the beautiful orchestrated slow soothing "Dying To live," the blistering soulful Rocker "Keep Playin' That Rock n' Roll," the incredible sounding Country Rocker "Round & Round," the mellow fast paced Rocker "Miracle Of Love," the beautiful soulful slow smoothing "Diamond Eyes," the thunderous fast paced Rocker "River's Risin'," the funkish country Rocker "We All Had A Real Good Time," the forever groundbreaking a*s kicking funkish Rocker "Frankenstein" and the seventeen minute mindblowing country Rocker "Tobacco Road." WINTER'S charisma contributes in bringing the band together and bringing the best out of them. Derringer's and Montrose's blistering guitar riffs and licks bring out a special unique sound that gives the music a new life of its very own.
Overall, this legendary compilation album is definitely worth seeking and checking further into especially if you are a new and curious listener of EDGAR WINTER'S sound and music.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This compilation album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, EDGAR WINTER is here to stay. Rock n' Roll will always have a breath of fresh air as long as the brothers EDGAR & JOHNNY WINTER are around to create something new for Rock n' Roll. I know for fact that we have not seen or heard the last of either brother yet. THE WINTER brothers still have so much to contribute to Rock n' Roll that it would be hard to imagine Rock n' Roll without them. I anticipate with excitement that we will all be hearing from both of them in the near future soon. So here's to you Edgar, brother Johnny, the late great Dan Hartman, Rick, Ronnie, Chuck and the rest of the numerous band members I failed to mention. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. EDGAR WINTER RULES. JOHNNY WINTER RULES. R.I.P. DAN HARTMAN. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
MONSTER MASH.......2005-10-21
Blues rocking Texan Edgar Winter's greatest hits only contains a pair of bona fide Top 40 classics, the chart topping instrumental "Frankenstein" (kids, think Tiger Woods' car ad of a few years back), and the Dan Hartman composed and sung "Free Ride". But that's hardly the point. The well respected keyboardist/saxman dabbles easily in country ("Round and Round"), pure blues ("Tobacco Road"), horn driven rock ("Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll"), funk ("We All Had a Real Good Time"), and other musical genres. After sampling this potpourri of pop styles, new fans are advised to check out "Roadwork", a blistering live outing by Edgar Winter's White Trash (a soul/blues revue with guest blasts from Rick Derringer and brother Johnny Winter) and the seventies milestone "They Only Come Out at Night", featuring "Frankenstein". Any albino that can hold his own against George Hamilton in a beer commercial is worth checking out, in my book.
His best collection.......2004-05-25
The best Edgar Winter collection available, partly because it includes the Dan Hartman hits from the Edgar Winter Group. Includes all the hits from the Edgar Winter Group such as Frankentstein, Free Ride, Rivers Risin, and Hangin Around, plus some of the best of Edgar Winter's White Trash. An excellent compilation.
A real blend of blues, funk, country, jazz, ..........2002-05-07
This is a record for good music lovers. You can't file it under just one music style. There are some furious blues/funk/jazz , like the first and other tracks with the 'White Trash' band , and also some more (beautiful)'comercial' songs, like Dying to Live . All material is first class, and it's a good introduction to Edgar Winter's music.
So So But.......1999-11-06
They Only Come Out At Night is the genius of edgar held together with nuts and bolts. Plugged it in see Frankenstein hop. Shock treatment has good bits and pieces, but doesn't come close to They Only Come Out At Night. And this is a collection which is all over the place, but the man is always worth 3 stars

Album Description
Although known mostly as a Blues musician, saxophonist, keyboardist and composer Edgar Winter is one musician who's never been afraid to venture into multiple musical arenas, often times within the space of one album, as in his debut, Entrance. Edgar was signed to Epic Records in 1970 after performing on his brother's Second Winter album. He recorded Entrance, which featured himself on most of the instruments. After radio success accompanying his brother on Johnny Winter And, he formed a large horn ensemble called White Trash. Although it was a short-lived group which broke up in mid-'72, Winter assembled another group to record two more albums for Epic Records, White Trash and Roadwork. Here we have the first two records on one CD. Remastered, slip-cased and with new notes. BGO. 2005.

Shock Treatment being reissued.......2007-02-12
Shock Treatment is being reissued as a two-for along with They Only Come Out At Night on February 20, 2007 in England. I hope Amazon will offer it for sale or pre-order by then. Hold on a few days and save yourself $50.00 or more. I love Edgar but those prices are just nuts.
The Miracle Of Music.......2006-10-27
The Edgar Winter Group features three musicians who I love-Winter himself,Rick Derringer and the imcomparable Dan Hartman. But to be honest I find 'Shock Treatment' to be the more interesting between it and the last one 'They Only Come Out At Night'.One reason is probably my own taste in music-'Shock Treatment' has plenty of hard rock moments (although "Rock N' Roll Animal" is not one of my favorites) but the music is far more informed by heavy funk and retro jazz stylings. One of the best songs here is Edgar's own "Easy Street",it has a great retro 40's R&B shuffle and some great lyrics about Edgar sitting in a cafe surroundedby some, shall we say colorful characters. And it's a story song too-he describes the characters in great detail too.Of the other Winter contributions 'Miracle Of Love" is another great song-it's a faced paced synthesizer prog rock/fusion kind of tune and (because its EDGAR WINTER) his brilliant, flamboyant singing keeps the music from being pompous at all and it has such a great hook."Do Like Me" BLASTS right out at you-it is the one stab of bona fide funk on the album, complete with Edgar's clavinet and the Funkadelic guitars this is a howling, yowling good groove!Dan Hartman provides three wonderful pop ballads in "Sundown",with it's beautiful 'Magical Mystery Tour'-styled backwards mellatron and a finely crafed tune."Someone To Take My Heart Away" and "Maybe Someday You'll Call My Name" are very much in the same vein-great mainstream rock ballads with a lot of John Lennon/Beatles references.Hartman and Winter also contribute the catchy fast paced funky rocker "River Risin'" and again it has some beautiful Lennon-like harmony vocals spiced throughout.I like Rick Derringer's guitar playing but it does seem that his high volume, theatrical hard/glam rock sound on his cuts don't seem to mesh well with the overall sound. He is much more effective when he is playing on the efforementioned songs.Overall 'Shock Treatment' is not Winter's greatest album-those would be his records with White Trash and any of his (largely) hard to locate solo albums but it is certainly a wonderful, eclectic pop album and one of the finest things The Edgar Winter Group ever recorded.
Underrated and lost classic.......2006-01-22
Forget the terrible photos on front and back covers- it must have seemed like a good idea at the time. A really catchy album. Edgar's Someone Take my heart away and Miracle of love along with Dans Sundown, Maybe Someday you'll call my name, and River's Rising all are wonderful. Dan's Rock and Roll Woman is pretty awful but all in all ,a fun album that should not be allowed to go out of print.
DEFINITELY AN EXCELLENT ALBUM BY THE EDGAR WINTER GROUP.......2005-01-17
Although this album lacks the hard driven guitar sound of RONNIE MONTROSE, who formed his own group called MONTROSE with then unknown SAMMY HAGER, this is still an album that should not be forgotten. The first song SOME KINDA ANIMAL with DAN'S lead vocal and RICK DERRINGER'S guitar riffs is a outstanding rock beginner that gets the listeners off their chairs or beds and on the feet. On the other hand, the next song EASY STREET written by DAN for EDGAR to sing has a excellent 30s or 40s resemblence, especially with the sax solo and the piano style. SUNDOWN is a outstanding ballad written and sung by DAN whose rhythm guitar playing, EDGAR'S clavinet and mellotron, and RICK'S lead guitar playing give the song a relaxed and laid-back feeling. The next song MIRACLE OF LOVE is a outstanding fast-paced keyboard rockin' tune that gets the listeners back on their feet with EDGAR'S stronge lead vocal and keyboard playing. DO LIKE ME, that only with the organ, is really not my favorite on this album. Plus I do not understand why DAN did not play bass guitar on this song, but some of RICK's guitar solos sound like a saxophone for some peculiar reason, which is somewhat cool. DAN'S ROCK AND ROLL WOMAN is another outstanding rock tune that keeps the album in motion with his lead vocals, the harmony vocals, and RICK'S guitar riffs. Then comes EDGAR'S keyboard ballad SOMEONE TAKE MY HEART AWAY with the rewarding sound of the mellotron and clavinet. DAN'S lead guitar playing on his QUEEN OF MY DREAMS really shines along with his lead vocal. Why EDGAR did not play on is song is a mystery to me. DAN'S MAYBE SOMEDAY YOU'LL CALL MY NAME that features his lead vocals, EDGAR'S piano playing, and RICK guitar playing has a relaxing feeling. Plus, DAN'S RIVER'S RISEN with the mellotron and guitar solos is and great song to listen to, and the harmony vocals remind me of what I hear on ELTON JOHN'S GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. Unfortunately, ANIMAL is also not my favorite song either. Overall, I was glad I found this cd in the used cd store, and I do not understand why it is not availalbe anymore.
Excellent! A forgotten classic!.......2004-05-25
An outstanding follow-up to "They Only Come Out At Night." This album was a moderate hit when it was released in the 70's, but it should have been a HUGE hit.
