Album Description

Killed or Cured is a unique two-disc set of indie folk songs, written during the breakup of Matt Pryor's previous outfit, The Get Up Kids. Each disc contains the same ten songs, but recorded with vastly different arrangements for each disc. It showcases Pryor's ability as a songwriter and the New Amsterdams abilities as arrangers, taking each song in two completely different directions. This material is some of the band's best work and a steal at the price of one disc.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-06-27

This is a great cd by the New Amsterdams, that comes with two discs. Both discs have the same titles on them, but they are two different renditions of the same songs. Thank you for finally releasing this album.

5 out of 5 stars What a great album!.......2007-05-28

I'm a huge Get Up Kids fan and I've always liked The New Amsterdams but when I heard about this album, I had to get it. The songs on the first disc was originally released online first and then the band recorded the same songs again but this time, it sounds more produced and downright amazing. Now the thing that makes this album so great is that you always pop in each disc just to listen how drastically they change. But believe it or not, the songs are actually better done this way. Also I think the first disc contains most of the best versions of the songs like "Heaven Scent". On the second disc the 2nd and 3rd songs kick the [...] of the originals. As a whole, the album is fantastic but if it was never released as a 2disc album, then this thing would just be determined mediocre. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars great .......2007-05-11

i have always liked this album, the free internest version (disc 2) and now i think i love the new one even more. how is this possible, the songs where already great? this band is something for the soul to take in and swallow like a oyster. great music.

5 out of 5 stars When I first bought this I couldn't stop listening........2007-07-12

I was born in the tail end of the 1960s so by the time I was old enough to be addicted to top-40 radio the original progressive rock movement had pretty much come to an end. Having a brother who was 18 years older than I was allowed me to learn about other music, including progressive rock. I started buying all of Steve Hackett's albums on cassette, then later CD, about 1988 when I was in college. I thought everything he had released up to that point was just incredible and wonderfully diverse. He continues to amaze me even now and I'm sure he will continue to do so for some time to come.

Cured was one of my favorites then, and it still is. It has a very stripped-down feel to it since it mostly consists of Steve on guitar plus synths and a drum machine, but in this case that is a virtue because it showcases just how talented Steve is as a songwriter. The more upbeat tracks on this album are ditties that you just can't shake from your head, and the slower songs have quite the emotional impact on me. For a more pop-oriented prog album, this easily compares to the best of the commercial smashes from the early 80s such as 90125, Abacab and Vinyl Confessions.

One more thing I should mention. Tony Banks' album The Fugitive is in some ways rather similar to this one and is another must-own for Genesis completists, or anyone else who enjoys the freedom of restriction that early 80's pop had (especially in comparison to today), and would like to try something a bit different.

5 out of 5 stars I dug it.....So what if they didn't!.......2006-07-06

Being an absolute huge Cure fan, I thought the bands did pretty well on covering the songs I'm sure they loved as well. While I'm usually a Razed in Black fan, Disintegration was just Ok to me. They made a usually soothing song into something Trent Reznor would be extremely proud. Joy Electric did an amazing rendition of Pictures of You, and Leaether Strip's version of Lullabye, while creepy, was very good as well. I loved loved loved Inertia's version of Hot Hot Hot which made me get up and shake my booty! I must agree with someone's view of Blank and Jones featuring Robert ( the God! ) Smith, did do an AMAZING remix of Forest. Obviously these versions will never replace the Cure in any way, but it is a must own if you are a Cure fan! Two thumbs up!

1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2005-10-09

Godhead's version of "Fascination Street" is possibly the only thing worth listening to on here. Let's face it. The Cure can be covered by no one. I don't even like most of the bands on here. Why I bought this, I have no idea, but I think I was curious to hear Joy Electric's cover of "Pictures of You", which is possibly the most atrocious, horrendous monstrosity I have ever heard. And I like J.E. The rest of this is total turd, these "industrial/electronic" bands are Cleopatra's typical brand of talentless poop. Maybe if they would have gotten some decent electronic bands to do this album, it would have been somewhat worthwile. Maybe released by a different label, say Metropolis, it would be less offensive. Stick to the real thing, it's the only way to go.

3 out of 5 stars Decent but not great.......2004-07-29

I think "Mixed Up", which came out almost 14 years ago is better. I do think Blank & Jones version of "Forest" is great.

1 out of 5 stars stephen jones, why have you forsaken me?.......2003-09-25

i just loved about everything this guy has done. i was a huge baby bird fanatic, and little less a babybird fanatic, but nevertheless bugged keeps on finding its way to my cd-player on a more then regular basis.
however i'm not really a 'pop music' listener (i tend to like things that are a little bit more into the 'avantgarde' or 'experimental' zone), you always could wake me up in the middle of the night for jones' intimite 'bed room recordings'. i'd always thought jones couldn't go wrong.

but, he has. oh boy has he gone wrong. i wanted to give this cd zero stars, but apperantly that is not possible. i don't know what he wants to do on this one. maybe he wants to head into a new direction a little bit to eager. so he uses 'hip hop beats', or something. i really hate hiphop, but the beats on this cd aren't even worthy of being called hiphop beats. it's more like someone is testing out a really cheap casio in a shopping mall. and than the vocals! jones's sounding like something even the beegees would be ashamed of. that awful high singing of his!
this cd is nothing. it's not consoling, it's not beautiful, it's not intriging, it's not even funny! for all you people who liked jones for the greatness that once was baby bird: don't buy this cd! for all you people who want to be overcharged for a cheap, childish, moronic cd: go ahead.

2 out of 5 stars an uncertain step in a new direction?.......2003-07-31

I loved just about everything Stephen Jones did as Babybird, but this album leaves me cold. It's like an aural collage (with samples galore) layered with sometimes nasally child-like vocals over hip-hoppish beats. Not all tracks follow that formula but it's the general rule of the album. My musical tastes actually veer towards the experimental side of things - (I'm really not a huge pop fan - Babybird was a notable exception), but "Almost Cured of Sadness" simply isn't focused enough to work.

5 out of 5 stars something unique.......2003-04-20

Jones takes some familiar elements but assimilates them into a creative, experimental, idiosyncratic framework, yielding a CD that sounds like nothing else. It's full of catchy elements (melodies, rhythms, and interesting lyrics that are sometimes dark and often rather kooky), so it's not the kind of new sound that one has to work hard to appreciate. If you are looking for something new and different, this could be the disc for you. It has certainly gotten a lot of spins in my player.

3 out of 5 stars stephen jones is now cured of sadness.......2003-03-06

Stephen Jones, ex founder-leader of the english band Babybird (which had two big hits in 1996, "You're Gorgeous" and "Candy Girl"), left the band in 2000, 3 months later the release of their last album "Bugged", because, on his opinion,
nobody was interested in BabyBird anymore. After a break of one year spent between a side project (a book released in summer 2001), he's now back as a solo artist, always with the same humor-sarcasm of the Babybird days. He released a collection of instrumental songs "dedicated for movie soundtracks ONLY" in the late 2001, entitled "1985-2001", and now, his first solo + singed album, "Almost Cured Of Sadness". The genious of this artist is remarkable in every song, every lyric. An incredible and talented artist, probably too much underrated. Is he now cured of sadness? who knows? we just know that this new album is similar to his Babybird works, and this is enough to say: "another great work"

5 out of 5 stars Steve Hackett's misunderstood pop masterpiece.......2007-02-03

Steve fires his band, keeps only the keyboardist, takes voice lessons and makes a pop song masterpiece as a duo and sings all the vocal. This guy is amazing, Oh my, think what would have been if Genesis had kept him.
Critics...you have to admire Steve for his bravery here, even if you don't like the pop Steve Hackett.

5 out of 5 stars Steve takes a step toward singer-songwriter territory and comes up with a masterpiece.......2006-03-06

It's all too easy to compare Steve Hackett's 1981 album "Cured" with the concurrent work of his former band Genesis. That's not to say that "Cured" sounds very much like "Abacab", but "Cured" does mark a definite shift toward pop-rock songwriting and arrangements, albeit with a lot of progressive rock touches (also true of '80s Genesis). The change in style is kind of surprising, but the results are incredible. Maybe Hackett felt he had reached an artistic dead-end following the release of "Defector".

Unlike the Banks-Collins-Rutherford lineup of Genesis, who modified their sound gradually from album to album, Hackett made sudden changes with "Cured". In a big turnaround from his previous solo albums, "Cured" is pretty much a two man show--Hackett and keyboardist Nick Magnus--and this seems to go hand in hand with the change in style, a change that's partly reflected in the album cover. Hackett also takes over completely on lead vocals, and most of the album consists of vocal numbers--out of the 8 tracks, there are just two instrumentals. Actually, I believe Hackett handles ALL of the vocal parts on the album, and he does an extremely admirable job--although his voice is rather thin, he neatly manages to breathe life into some lyrics that look corny on paper, and his earnestness and sincerity give the album a winning homely charm, plus he really does a heck of a job with the harmonies.

Steve appears to be extremely content on the album cover, and many of the songs on here are indeed very upbeat from a musical standpoint. However, in a curious contrast, the lyrics on the album are uniformly downbeat, frequently reflecting on the concept of people drifting apart and coping with the loss, with Steve taking a flat-out defeatist tone on songs such as "Hope I Don't Wake" and "Funny Feeling".

Hackett wrote 6 of the 8 tracks here himself, and co-wrote the other two, and he displays an amazing pop-rock sensibility. The album-opening "Hope I Don't Wake" is a beautiful, unbelievably catchy, breezy pop-rocker, musically upbeat with wonderful ringing guitar lines and rich vocal harmonies. The ballad-ish "Picture Postcard" sets a really captivating mood with its arpegiatted electric guitars and pensive melody, plus it has a bridge section that's pleasantly reminiscent of the chorus to Genesis' "Dutchess". "Funny Feeling", co-written by Magnus, is a mind-bogglingly catchy song, with an infectious vocal melody and a cool keyboard riff--compulsively listenable stuff indeed. "Can't Let Go" is also an absolutely irresistible, hook-heavy pop-rocker, stuffed with great keyboard riffs and great guitar and bass licks. "Overnight Sleeper", co-written by Kim Poor, has a captivating instrumental intro (even though it contains a 9/8 section that sounds like it's ripped off from one of his previous albums), nicely dramatic verses, and a lovely, melancholy section that arrives at 2:20 of the track. The slow-paced album-closing ballad "Turn Back Time" is reflective, extremely tender, and beautiful, fading away in mesmerising fashion.

As for the two instrumentals... "A Cradle Of Swans" is one of Hackett's classical guitar excursions--after about a minute it starts getting head-scratchingly aimless, but on the whole it's quite lovely, and serves as an effective link between "Funny Feeling" and "Overnight Sleeper". And "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare" is a blast, with its toe-tappingly catchy beat, amusingly mock-ominous sound, and Hackett's wailing guitar heroics--it totally rocks, and it's almost as if it's been beamed in from a completely different album.

To say I'm pleasantly surprised with "Cured" is a big understatement. This is an incredibly addictive album that I'm simply blown away by. For any serious music fan, but ESPECIALLY fans of '80s Genesis, "Cured" is an absolute must.

3 out of 5 stars Rather weak and off-course.......2004-05-22

After a number of great early albums by Steve Hackett, we come to the album Cured. Gone is the six-piece band that brought us Spectral Mornings and Defector. In it's place is just Steve, keyboardist Nick Magnus, and a drum machine. Brother John Hackett does appear a little on flute, but it's very marginal.

The big problems with this album is the drum machine (which sounds cheesy to the trained ear), and the lack of strong songs. In fact, most of the songs are in the pop music category. With the new direction, and with Steve starting to get used to handling the vocals, the result is a weak effort. Based on the rest of the albums Steve has put out, I'd think that he'd cringe and be embarrased by this one.

There are a few decent songs on the album, like the somewhat dark and menacing Air Conditioned Nightmare, and the quiet acoustic Cradle of Swans, but the rest are a bit annoying.

5 out of 5 stars the best Steve Hackett album... EVER!.......2002-09-25

I LOVE THIS ALBUM. Although i was never a person for prog-rock that turned to pop, this is an excellent album and steve hackett sung wonderfully all thru the album. I am 13 and i have heard spectral mornings and please don't touch ( i have written a review for that ). The album is pure pop and the only PROPER rock track is the brilliant air conditioned nightmare.
This LP, although pop will please on every listen and steve FINALLY brings out an album where HE gets all the credit he deserves.

5 out of 5 stars OK, OK, I Know What You're Going To Say.......2002-09-20

-about the vocals. Everybody seems to have said the same thing for 21 years. I don't care. Steve Hackett was taking a big step by performing all the vocals for the first time in his career. I give him credit--he hired a coach, took lessons, learned about what he could do and gave it a shot. Taken in context, I say it works. This album is pure 80's but Steve is still in there. He scores another trademark instrumental classic with "Air-Conditioned Nightmare." Steve even came up with an anthem in "Overnight Sleeper", though many people may not have thought of it as such. And here is Steve's first radio-friendly single, "Hope I Don't Wake." You cannot dislike it.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Greatest Industrial/Rock Band You've Never Heard Of..........2005-09-21

It's a shame that these guys and gal never achieved the success that they should've. Heavily influenced by Dessau, Ministry, Bile, Slayer and Fear Factory but with a keen ear for melody which all of the afforementioned acts so painfully lack. Sutur could've taken over where NIN left off, but alas they became just one more nail in the Industrial / Rock coffin.
