About the Artist
The band Bain Mattox led by the charming front-man of the same name inspires devotion. Its a devotion shared by thousands of fans across the Southeast, a devotion that can be traced to a simple image: a television. Lead singer Bain Mattoxs forearm bears a unique clue to the singer/songwriters life: a simple tattoo of a line-drawn television. "I view life like a sit-com. Were all characters in something bigger. I love to write about peoples real life experiences as though I am watching them on TV," he says. The television has become a shared symbol between the band and their fans fans who wear shirts TV sketched on the front and drive vehicles adorned with TV stickers. The band often plays shows with static-filled TVs on stage; their 2003 self-titled release has a twisted and distorted version of a vintage television on the cover. For fans, Mattoxs songwriting often feels like a perfectly-matched script to life. Fans relate to the real-life subject matter of songs such as "Thorn" (an ode to an obnoxious friend) and "Jet Black Ash" (about the homeless in the subway tunnels of New York City). Universal themes such as ghosts, insomnia, breakups and saving face appear throughout the set. Mattox Creative Loafings Singer/Songwriter of the Year for 2003 writes with a raw honesty that is both glorious and uncomfortable, making him less singer/songwriter and more of a messenger between experience and people seeking an answer. And the fact that he spends a show switching effortlessly from guitar to mandolin to accordion to harmonica and back again makes him an even more effective troubadour. In late 2002, Mattox went from an acoustic duo to a full four-on-the-floor pop/rock band. Mattox took the acoustic arrangements of his songs, punched them in the gut and re-emerged with a new electrified sound and an eponymous band ready to deliver the message. The new and improved line up includes drummer Andy Bauer, guitarist Brian Bonds,! and bassist George Baerris. The Atlanta/Athens-based quartet is known for their high-energy live show (never short on crowd participation), sing-along bar-room harmonies and boyish good looks. Bain Mattox has been touring this year in support of the Bain Mattox album, recorded with producer Don McCollister (Third Day, Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins). The album, which blends sad eloquence with gritty garage anthems, has been a success story from the beginning. The track "Peripheral People" was featured on Turner Network Televisions NASCAR and on the Miller/99X Locals Only Compilation CD. "Shotgun Pageant" and "Sixes and Fives" appeared on MTVs The Real World, while "Slumber Plane" was voted one of the top ten best songs in Atlanta by ATL::Magazine. The record also earned Bain Mattox a BMI-sponsored CD release, live appearances on FOX (Charlotte, N.C.) and CBS (Good Day Atlanta), and a slot on Music Midtown 2004, alongside The Strokes, Foo Fighters and Switchfoot. 2004 finds Bain Mattox exactly where they want to be nominated for four of Athens, Ga.s Flagpole Music Awards, preparing for a fall tour, and holding an albums worth of radio-ready songs to be recorded in late fall this year.
Product Description
This self-titled release finds Bain Mattox in an edgy, explosive mood. With the solidification of the quartet comes a greatly evolved sound: somewhat thicker, more controversial, and longing. Produced by Atlanta's Don McCollister [Third Day, Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins], the tracks on this album are more polished than previous recordings, yet still pack a punch with over-the-top dueling harmonies and Mattox's signature eclectic instrumentation. Recommended tracks include the familiar "Slumber Plane", the eerie ode to bottom-dwellers "Jet Black Ash" the pounding anthem "Peripheral People" and the sing-along "Thorn."
He makes real music with about real things. His live shows are just amazing...but if you cant get to one...the albums are the next best thing. I listen to his music several times a week. I just cant say enough about how different and beautiful his music is.....check him out!
