The word "confessional" is frequently applied to folk of all stripes, including folk-rock and folk-pop, which is where Jewel comes in. Even within the bounds of folk, however, her music is more nakedly confessional than most. (Too nakedly, some have carped.) Along with a coterie of Nashville pros, she began her latest musical journey by laying down another introspective song cycle in the vein of 1995's Pieces of You. Dissatisfied with the results, the Texas-based artist scrapped that effort and re-recorded with Rob Cavallo (Green Day). This lends her sixth album the expected rock edge, but Jewel hasn't changed her spots. If anything, she sounds more like, well, Jewel than she did on dance-oriented departure 0304. She's still pop star ("Fragile Heart"), sensitive folkie ("Long Slow Slide"), and scrappy country gal ("Stephenville, TX"). Her Joni Mitchell-esque soprano soars as high as ever, with more of a sardonic Dylan chaser than before. What's changed is that maturity has granted Jewel, now in her early 30s, greater perspective--"Growing up is not an absence of dreaming," she states in the title track--and a sense of humor missing from her more earnest early work. On "Satellite," for instance, written when she was 18, but revamped since, she notes that "the Pope," "rock and roll," "Valium," even "Miss Cleo" can't fix her broken heart. In her statement about the album, Jewel claims that, after years of ups and downs, she's "not broken, just more myself." --Kathleen C. FennessyAlbum Description
Jewel is about to deliver her most personal and autobiographical record so far-Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Not content to relegate herself to a traditional music arena, or to be typecast, Jewel has established herself as a culturally significant and relevant brand. Author, songwriter, actress, poet-there are no limits to how Jewel can and will deliver her message. The underlining truth that ties it all together is the integrity of that message.Customer Reviews:

The fear of loneliness, a hope for romance, the occasional pang of moody nostalgia--it's all found in the light romance of Next Stop Wonderland. But few of Wonderland's plot devices work quite as convincingly at portraying these themes as the movie's soundtrack. Filled with the classic sounds of bossa nova and samba, these songs ooze with the melancholy found in the movie. There's a lot of great stuff here: classic Astrud Gilberto, Coleman Hawkins, Marcus Valle, new interpretations of Jobim. But the unexpected highlight is the original score: Claudio Ragazzi backed by the smooth-as-flan vocals of avant-jazz-guitarist-gone-Jobim-freak Arto Lindsay. Their trio of bossa-nova inspired collaborations sounds as sweet and timeless as the classic originals here. In all, it's one of the best soundtrack collections of 1998, and one you'll be listening to long after you've forgotten its sorta-like-Sleepless in Seattle film counterpart. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

E.S.T. like to play with expectations, and they begin Tuesday Wonderland as you might assume, with a spare solo piano line hinting at a delicate baroque counterpoint. It's the kind of feather-stroked chamber jazz they've been working for a few years now. But just as you settle in, crushing drums and fuzzed arco bass drop in a groove from the apocalypse. This ominous track, "Fading Maid Preludium," and its second half, "Fading Maid Postludium," frame Tuesday Wonderland, setting in bas-relief an album of careening, intuitive improvisation. E.S.T. are frighteningly varied in their technique and deep in their understanding of jazz lore. You can hear echoes of Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal in pianist Esbjörn Svensson, from whom the trio take their name, but he also embraces a more modern vocabulary, hinting at Cecil Taylor while dancing gospel vamps and dropping rock power-chords. Drummer Magnus Öström can lay down the shuffling brush strokes of "The Goldhearted Miner," pour out a progressive rock fusillade, or do a ballet of polyrhythmic shadings and colors that recall the late Steve McCall. The real chameleon of the group is bassist Dan Berglund. He plays soulful, muscular double bass lines, but he also triggers a synthesizer for both subtle shading and the hellion roar heard on that opening track. E.S.T. remain a group exploring the edges of jazz improvisation, managing to be free and intuitive while also maintaining melodic and rhythmic touchstones. Tracks like "Brewery of Beggars" are multipart journeys shifting from gentle lyricism to electric storms. E.S.T. have evolved from being the most ECM-like band that wasn't on ECM into their own natural and thoroughly modern hybrid. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

Just beautiful........2007-05-23
From the étude-like opening ("Fading Maid Preludium") that explodes into post Hendrix power-chords to the focused beauty of "Where We Used To Live", this remarkable group is one of the few bands on the current scene that can be truly called sui generis - for evidence of this try the shifting tone colours of the title track.
What is even more remarkable is that Bach's Well Tempered Clavier could inspire such a wide range of moods.
Esbjörn Svensson (pianist), Dan Berglund (bassist) and Magnus Öström (drummer).
E.S.T. is amazing.......2007-04-13
Their most accomplished record yet ........2007-04-10
Their last album sold many thousands copies and they fill the major concert halls in Europe.
This is their 10th album, and the major influence is Bach, most noticeably in the mathematical purity of tracks such as Beggar's Blanket.
From the opening classical piano pattern disrupted by a guitar power chord, "Tuesday Wonderland" avoids the usual melody-improvisation-melody structure beloved of most jazz bands.
It may be too introverted for some, but E.S.T. balance this with expressive solos to make their most accomplished record yet.

Whew!.......2007-03-08
For the most part Tepid Peppermint Wonderland is great, the only problem is that there's so much material on the two dics! There's simply no way to listen to this record and go - 'Wow! I'm totally hooked!' and leave it sitting in your CD player for three weeks - just too much going on, I'm afraid. So for now I'm patienly getting to know (and love) this record little by little. Just don't buy this thinking that it's going to instantly make BJM the greatest thing you've ever heard. It takes a bit of time, but it is well worth the effort.
good mix of everything.......2007-02-01
Overall, it's a pretty good introduction to The Brian Jonestown Massacre, although it does have some faults. The organization of the songs could have been better, considering they had two whole CD's to mess with (i.e., could have lined up the songs more "logically"). However, you WILL find any super-great song that you might have heard (from which you presumably decided to research BJM because you liked the style) on the album.

All in One!.......2007-01-23
Also, something else that makes this album so awesome is the orcestra that plays in so many of the songs, it just adds so much more depth to the true meaning of the songs. It's a very intense album, very good songs, and there are very good meanings to them. And even though I used the word "intense", and there are those few very powerful songs, It's completly sutible for younger children as well!
So I say everyone should own a copy of this CD, even if you are from the US, It's completly worth the 40$ [I know this because I'm from the US as well]. Just give it a try, you'll be pleasntly surprised with it! x
Hot Album Alert!!!!!!.......2006-09-16
This album spun off number one hit singles almost by centrifugal force, with "All About You", "I'll Be OK" and "I Wanna Hold You" taking the UK by storm. McFly recently guest starred in the Lindsay Lohan movie "Just My Luck" and played a couple of tracks.
The songs are all excellent, yet all different, and the band credits The Who and Supertramp for inspiration. Second track "I've Got You" is about standing by somebody no matter what, and has some heavy guitar riffs; "Ultraviolet" features sitar music and "The Ballad of Paul K" is about fathers growing old and having things start falling apart.
"It's All About You" is a sixties-sounding retro ballad; and the two-part "She Falls Asleep" with its haunting piano and orchestra is about a girl who commits suicide. It sounds like soundtrack music, and is among the best compositions on the album. You'll remember this one for a long time - it's what would happen if The Beatles and John Williams got together and pooled their best material.
There are no bad tracks on this album, and I highly recommend it to pop music lovers everywhere.

Watch Out! Here Comes McFly!.......2006-02-05
1. I'll Be Ok (9/10)- This is a very upbeat song with a good message to it: when things go wrong, just tell yourself 'i'll be ok'. The chorus is very catchy and it's just simply a good, solid pop song. A great way to start off the album.
2. I've Got You (8.5/10)- This is a happy-go-lucky song about young love. The guitar riffs are very catchy as I find myself humming to the music of this song. The only criticism is that I find some of the lyrics to be a bit corny ( 'cause i've got you to make me feel stronger/ when the days are rough and an hour feels much longer). But this is only a minor fault.
3. Ultraviolet (9/10)- Oooh, this song is good. The song starts of slow.....then.... BAM!- some great guitar riffs enter and stay throughout the rest of the song. This song shows some good rock n roll- a very summery and beachy song that reminds me of the Beach Boys. Fantastic.
4. The Ballad of Paul K (9/10)- This song is one-of-a-kind. A ballad? yes. boring? not at all. Somehow the boys manage to keep your interest through a song about a middle-aged man going through a crisis. With easy going music and bold lyrics (look at what you've thrown away/ they've stood beside you all the way/now its too late, its too late for you) this song is a keeper.
5. I Wanna Hold You (10/10)- One word: Bold. This song makes a statement. It combines awesome guitar playing with lyrics that will get your attention to create a truly fantastic song. Although McFly is a pop band, I'm still going to say it: McFly know how to rock.
6. Too Close for Comfort (10/10)***- This is definitaly my favorite track on the album, and possibly my favorite McFly song ever. From beginning to end, this song is amazing. It's a remarkable song about breaking up that could bring anyone to tears with true, heart-wrenching lyrics such as "everything i feel for you I wrote down on one piece of paper/the one in your hand/you won't understand how much it hurts to let you go". I love everything about this song and wouldn't change a thing.
7. All About You (9/10)- Ok, ready? One... Two... Three... awwwwww! This is a fantastic love song that will remind you about that special someone. Its simplicity makes it so beautiful, as well as the serene melody with violins gently playing in the background. Fantastic.
8. She Falls Asleep (Part 1)(8/10)- A beautiful, no lyric, short, less than two minute orchestra playing melody that gets the listener ready for the second part of the song.
9. She Falls Asleep (Part 2) (8.5/10)- A very soft, piano and orchestra driven song that is based on the heavy subject of suicide. It's very different from the rest of thier album, but it's very refreshing and peaceful. McFly took a risk with this song, and I love it.
10. Don't Know Why (10/10)- For some reason, this song grabs my attention. Somehow, each instrument stands out in its own unique way. The lyrics are very simple but meaningful at the same time, dealing with the harsh reality of broken dreams and relationships (no matter what you say to me/ we are not the same). Overall, it's just a great song.
11. Nothing (9/10)- The album returns to it's cheerful pop melodies, as in the beginning of the album. This is another song about lost love that has a catchy tune that you just can't get enough of. Overall, this song is a carefree, good pop tune.
12. Memory Lane (9/10)- A great way to end the album. This is a great song for reminiscing over old photographs and high school yearbooks. Very nice and well put together. It ends the album with the chanting chorus "so much has changed".
Outstanding second album from a truly special band.......2005-11-08

Wondrous Classic Wonderland!.......2007-07-19
I still have my vinyl copy. I just bought this CD here. I bought the album the day it came out back in 1983?
The thing with this album is that it is a three piece powerhouse. Andy Newmark on Drums, Kevin McCormick on Bass, Nils on Guitars/Vocals. Yeah an overdub here or there but, really a natural rawness for the time which it's recorded. Nils' guitar playing is some of my favorite from his entire recorded history. Not long after this he became an E Streeter. Where he touched the Springsteen sound LIVE with a style and class that only Nils could bring to the table. The perfect foil for that band. Across the Tracks is an unrealised or at least underpromoted hit single.
This is Nils Lofgren in full maturity. It is my favorite Nils studio album after Cry Tough. It is a great, great, great addition to any collection.

Chip Davis's Mannheim Steamroller hasn't lost any ground in the six years since their last Yuletide offering. Christmas Extraordinare is another innovative and heartfelt collection of seasonal treasures played on a combination of 18th-century instruments and modern-day synthesizers, drums, and electric guitars. While not the first to marry different ages of musical instruments, Davis and his cohorts use them with imagination and an intensity that gives new life and drama to this rather inert genre. For material, Mannheim Steamroller asked their fans to choose their favorite holiday selections and vote on their Web site. The results of the poll are a fine mix of old and new--with slightly more emphasis on the modern--ranging from the bracing "Fum, Fum, Fum," a traditional Catalan carol, to Tchaikovsky's "Faeries" from The Nutcracker. Mannheim Steamroller imbues this beloved song with an almost militaristic edge, grounding it with an ominous tuba that gives the usually fey "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" an edgy tension. "Winter Wonderland" is a spectacular work, bordering on prog rock, as if Emerson, Lake & Palmer had re-formed to whip up a winter blizzard gone amok. While most of the Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums are largely instrumental, Davis has employed the considerable talents of University of Michigan's Glee Club to sing on "O Tannenbaum," respectfully fading their elegant, full vocals around the pristine voice of Johnny Mathis, elevating this German carol to a cinematic peak. Don't miss out on the clever liner notes, which give the reader a whimsical, anecdotal history of the 12 songs. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

Resplendent in voice and manner, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti deliver 21 songs of traditional sacred music and secular numbers in a remarkable 1999 live recording from the opulent Viennese concert hall (Konzerthaus), with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and a renowned choir. The Three Tenors are practically as famous as the faces of Mount Rushmore and inspire perhaps even more awe and adulation around the world than the four presidents. The performances--whether alone, in tandem, or simply as the threesome that has made them collectively famous--are generally impeccable for their passion, nuance, and sheer tour de force vocal artistry. Reaching often into the classical realm for such works as the traditional German carol "Susani," Strauss's and Brahms's "Wiegenlied," plus traditional Polish and Spanish pieces, the trio also visits Pavarotti's "Ave Maria, dolce Maria" (cowritten with Vittoriano Benvenuti), and "Un nuevo siglo," written by Domingo's son. Only John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas/War Is Over" doesn't quite work in this grand setting. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Wonderfully Different & Addicting! And All Your Friends Will Be Calling HOO-HOO!.......2005-08-23
I found the CD delightful beyond words. It has some beautiful versions of well-known Christmas songs, as well as songs I've never heard before. "Carol of the Drum" and "War Is Over" are my two favorites, with "Sleigh Ride" a close third.
Sure, there is some tripping over of words by these three great opera stars...but that makes it even more enhancing in my opinion. Pavarotti was particularly amusing when he was singing: "And all our friends are calling 'HOO-HOO'!" (Watch the DVD for Carreras' reaction to that one!) And let's not forget Pavarotti singing: "I'll be home for Christmas. You can PLAY on me."
The children's chorus is great, the Vienna Symphony is great...and, once again, buy or rent the DVD so you can get the full affect of this astounding Christmas concert...the music, the lights, the colors, and the marvelous Steven Mercurio conducting it all.
Wonderful and funny compilation.......2005-03-09
A historical meeting..........2004-11-28
For one and a half hour, Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti performed the greatest Christmas songs and carols from around the world. Nearly 65 minutes of this monumental concert are captured on this disk. The opening version of "O Holy Night" (aka "Cantique De Noel", "Minuit, Chrétien") by Domingo and Pavarotti would be reason enough to get this one. But wait, there is far more on the way, than selections from the classical genre. The real enjoyment starts, when the three tenors do one of the most romantic arrangements of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" ever heard and fade from a rousing "La Virgen Lava Pa`nales" into one of the finest treatments of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" ever heard. Also of great interest is the trio arrangement of "Let It Snow!", which is included on some of the import versions and on the DVD.
If you are a hopeless completist like me, you may be asking, what happened to the 25 minutes cut from the CD release. Well, first let me say, that none of the currently available releases has the order of the songs as they were performed in the concert. Although this is a live recording, handclaps and other characteristics of a live recording are hardly audible on the CD version. Two tracks, "Jingle Bells" and "Let It Snow", which had clearly audible handclaps at the beginning and at the end of the performance (and therefore couldn't be faded out) can be found on the mentioned import disk and on the DVD's PCM soundtrack. "Children of Christmas" (a Plácido Domingo Jr. composition originally introduced in "Christmas In Vienna IV" by Plácido Domingo and Michael Bolton) and "Ay" Para Navidad" can be found exclusively on the DVD. Currently unavailable on any official release is the "Overture" (which can be found on the DVD, but abridged with sound effects). So here's the actual running order: "Overture", 20, 2, 1, 11, 3, 4, "Children of Christmas", 16, 17, 6, 15, 8, "Let it snow", 5, "Ay! Para Navidad", 9, 19, 14, 18, 12, 13, "Jingle Bells", 7, 21, 10;
If you still doubt about the quality of this performance, let me say one for sure: As other volumes in the series will slowly disappear (as some of them have already in the US), this one is a matter of decades and when you buy this one, you will have joyful Christmas hours for many, many Christmases to come.

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah ChinCustomer Reviews:
