The word "confessional" is frequently applied to folk of all stripes, including folk-rock and folk-pop, which is where Jewel comes in. Even within the bounds of folk, however, her music is more nakedly confessional than most. (Too nakedly, some have carped.) Along with a coterie of Nashville pros, she began her latest musical journey by laying down another introspective song cycle in the vein of 1995's Pieces of You. Dissatisfied with the results, the Texas-based artist scrapped that effort and re-recorded with Rob Cavallo (Green Day). This lends her sixth album the expected rock edge, but Jewel hasn't changed her spots. If anything, she sounds more like, well, Jewel than she did on dance-oriented departure 0304. She's still pop star ("Fragile Heart"), sensitive folkie ("Long Slow Slide"), and scrappy country gal ("Stephenville, TX"). Her Joni Mitchell-esque soprano soars as high as ever, with more of a sardonic Dylan chaser than before. What's changed is that maturity has granted Jewel, now in her early 30s, greater perspective--"Growing up is not an absence of dreaming," she states in the title track--and a sense of humor missing from her more earnest early work. On "Satellite," for instance, written when she was 18, but revamped since, she notes that "the Pope," "rock and roll," "Valium," even "Miss Cleo" can't fix her broken heart. In her statement about the album, Jewel claims that, after years of ups and downs, she's "not broken, just more myself." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Jewel is about to deliver her most personal and autobiographical record so far-Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Not content to relegate herself to a traditional music arena, or to be typecast, Jewel has established herself as a culturally significant and relevant brand. Author, songwriter, actress, poet-there are no limits to how Jewel can and will deliver her message. The underlining truth that ties it all together is the integrity of that message.

3 out of 5 stars This is ok..........2007-07-15

I LOVE Jewel but this album sure doesnt beat Spirit or Peices of you. I dunno, its hard to explain, its like the songs are a bit generic, Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is good, and so is a Good Day. I think maybe its just lacking a bit of soul, it just doesnt seem alot like the old Jewel we are all used too.

5 out of 5 stars #1 Jewel Fan.......2007-07-05

Jewel will always have a special place in my heart. I've loved her music since the day I heard "You Were Meant For Me" come on the radio. I wasn't too fond of 0304 but in Goodbye Alice in Wonderland she brings a bit more of the real Jewel back into our hearts. I really enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated.......2007-06-21

Jewel through many a curveball back in 2003 when she released 0304, which took her trademark confessional lyrics and set them against a mostly upbeat(and occasionally dance-driven)beat, much to the consternation of many of her fans. I was in the minority, as it was in my opinion her best album to that point, and follow-up GOODBYE ALICE IN WONDERLAND is on an even level of quality with that disc. Returning more to the sound of her THIS WAY album, Jewel again keeps things rather upbeat(musically) this time around, not thanks to dance backdrops but with the addition of a slightly harder rock sound, probably due to producer Rob Cavallo's hand in things. It's a good fit for the singer, who rocks out harder than ever on such tracks as "Only One Too", "Works Get In The Way", and "Drive To You". It also provides her with her most accessible set of songs to date, which is a shame considering that the album has been all but ignored since its' release--as was noted elsewhere, nearly every song here could have been a single. Too bad her record company didn't have the good sense to see that.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel the way I know and love her.......2007-04-28

I was aghast at 0304 when it seemed Jewel gave up her folk music so I was more than relieved by Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. I was like, oh thank GOOOOOOOD Jewel did another album that shows off her great songwriting and guitar talents. It was really hard to watch her video for Intuition with the back up dancers and trashy wardrobe. Jewel is beautiful just the way she always has been. Love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Still Shining.......2007-04-24

I think it strange that Jewel's latest album did not top the charts. It was certainly masterful in design and execution. And therein lies the problem. I suggest that she do another tour and record a live album with some new material. We all know how wonderful her concerts can be, and how beautifully her voice can soar underneath the stars and trees... I caught her act in Central Park, and of course ..... I just had to say yes to all of that heartfelt emotion that poured over me like a pristine waterfall - splendid Jewel!

The fear of loneliness, a hope for romance, the occasional pang of moody nostalgia--it's all found in the light romance of Next Stop Wonderland. But few of Wonderland's plot devices work quite as convincingly at portraying these themes as the movie's soundtrack. Filled with the classic sounds of bossa nova and samba, these songs ooze with the melancholy found in the movie. There's a lot of great stuff here: classic Astrud Gilberto, Coleman Hawkins, Marcus Valle, new interpretations of Jobim. But the unexpected highlight is the original score: Claudio Ragazzi backed by the smooth-as-flan vocals of avant-jazz-guitarist-gone-Jobim-freak Arto Lindsay. Their trio of bossa-nova inspired collaborations sounds as sweet and timeless as the classic originals here. In all, it's one of the best soundtrack collections of 1998, and one you'll be listening to long after you've forgotten its sorta-like-Sleepless in Seattle film counterpart. --Jason Verlinde

If you love jazz and bossa nova (in other words real music) this is the CD for you. Great music and great musicians.

5 out of 5 stars BES TBOSSA NOVA CD.......2005-05-24

I went to watch the movie which a really did not like but the music was exceptional. This is the best BOssa Nova cd I have ever listened to. It has been years since I got it and I still listen regularly. All my friends who listen to it are buyinmg it. I recommand it A++++++++

4 out of 5 stars Stellar.......2004-10-18

Just the perfect mix of jazz and love songs for both small functions or cocktail hour with friends. Astrud Gilberto's music alone makes this a worthwhile compilation of excellent Brazillian Samba Music. It's as if someone chose the best vintage Brazillian jazz and put it on one CD. By the way, the movie that accompany's this soundtrack is pretty good too!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation.......2003-07-03

I've never seen the movie, so I don't know how well the music is integrated in the film, but the music itself is quite superb. It presents a pretty even mixture of new and old Brazillian music. The best song, in my opinion, is "Batucada" sung by Babel Gilberto and Vinicius Cantuaria - his voice is like silk. This song is worth the CD alone. The percussion is excellent. You also get a lot of music on this CD. If you're looking for a primer on Bossa Nova this is a good selection.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2003-03-03

This movie introduced me to Bossa Nova. Ever since, I have been in love with the genre. I could never get sick of it. I love listening to it on Sunday mornings while I read the paper. It makes me miss Boston.

E.S.T. like to play with expectations, and they begin Tuesday Wonderland as you might assume, with a spare solo piano line hinting at a delicate baroque counterpoint. It's the kind of feather-stroked chamber jazz they've been working for a few years now. But just as you settle in, crushing drums and fuzzed arco bass drop in a groove from the apocalypse. This ominous track, "Fading Maid Preludium," and its second half, "Fading Maid Postludium," frame Tuesday Wonderland, setting in bas-relief an album of careening, intuitive improvisation. E.S.T. are frighteningly varied in their technique and deep in their understanding of jazz lore. You can hear echoes of Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal in pianist Esbjörn Svensson, from whom the trio take their name, but he also embraces a more modern vocabulary, hinting at Cecil Taylor while dancing gospel vamps and dropping rock power-chords. Drummer Magnus Öström can lay down the shuffling brush strokes of "The Goldhearted Miner," pour out a progressive rock fusillade, or do a ballet of polyrhythmic shadings and colors that recall the late Steve McCall. The real chameleon of the group is bassist Dan Berglund. He plays soulful, muscular double bass lines, but he also triggers a synthesizer for both subtle shading and the hellion roar heard on that opening track. E.S.T. remain a group exploring the edges of jazz improvisation, managing to be free and intuitive while also maintaining melodic and rhythmic touchstones. Tracks like "Brewery of Beggars" are multipart journeys shifting from gentle lyricism to electric storms. E.S.T. have evolved from being the most ECM-like band that wasn't on ECM into their own natural and thoroughly modern hybrid. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Quie Up To Priors.......2007-05-29

My first impression is that this new release is not as instantly enaging as thier first 2 or 3 - I have all. I love these guys and believe they should be heralded for the innovation, originality, energy and melodicism they bring to the piano trio format. Far and away superior to the lame Bad Plus - who Sony deemed fit to surplant E.S.T. as their comtemporary jazz darlings. This CD makes me feel that the formula may be fraying a bit - but the musicianship and style remains. Maybe not their best, but another wonderful addition to their catolog.

2 out of 5 stars Waiting for Wednesday........2007-05-27

I'm not sure what E.S.T. was trying for here. Lost are many of the qualities that us fans have come to love and expect from them. Gone are the catchy melodies, replaced by more Noise. Usually, they use noise elements as an interesting background layer that adds interest and mood. Here it seems to dominate and undermine the compositions. If I want to listen to something loud and noisy, I'll listen to someone else. Of course, not every recording can be as good as "Seven Days of Falling", but it would be a shame to see these guys lose us. Growth and evolution is good. This, however, appears to be something else. It's not for me.

4 out of 5 stars Just beautiful........2007-05-23

In the beginning it was Sweden, then Europe and now it's the world. The rise and rise of EST has been remarkable in recent years - in the USA they were the first ever European jazz group to feature on the cover of Downbeat magazine, while their intro to Japan's top promoter was on the recommendation of Keith Jarrett. If any one is in any doubt about how original, absorbing and dynamic this band is, then get "Tuesday Wonderland", their tenth album.

From the étude-like opening ("Fading Maid Preludium") that explodes into post Hendrix power-chords to the focused beauty of "Where We Used To Live", this remarkable group is one of the few bands on the current scene that can be truly called sui generis - for evidence of this try the shifting tone colours of the title track.
What is even more remarkable is that Bach's Well Tempered Clavier could inspire such a wide range of moods.
Esbjörn Svensson (pianist), Dan Berglund (bassist) and Magnus Öström (drummer).

5 out of 5 stars E.S.T. is amazing.......2007-04-13

This is one of my favorite groups playing today. They are always innovative and play as a collective. Very inspiring stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Their most accomplished record yet ........2007-04-10

This piano-led trio have carved out a space somewhere between the thoughtful European jazz of Keith Jarrett and the atmospheric textures of Sigur Rós or Radiohead.
Their last album sold many thousands copies and they fill the major concert halls in Europe.
This is their 10th album, and the major influence is Bach, most noticeably in the mathematical purity of tracks such as Beggar's Blanket.

From the opening classical piano pattern disrupted by a guitar power chord, "Tuesday Wonderland" avoids the usual melody-improvisation-melody structure beloved of most jazz bands.
It may be too introverted for some, but E.S.T. balance this with expressive solos to make their most accomplished record yet.

4 out of 5 stars Whew!.......2007-03-08

Right. I bought this after watching Dig! - mainly because the music sounded wicked-cool and the visuals rocked. Impulse purchase, I guess.
For the most part Tepid Peppermint Wonderland is great, the only problem is that there's so much material on the two dics! There's simply no way to listen to this record and go - 'Wow! I'm totally hooked!' and leave it sitting in your CD player for three weeks - just too much going on, I'm afraid. So for now I'm patienly getting to know (and love) this record little by little. Just don't buy this thinking that it's going to instantly make BJM the greatest thing you've ever heard. It takes a bit of time, but it is well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars good mix of everything.......2007-02-01

This is a nice, all-encompassing collection of BJM. It includes songs from all the categories of their music, which is more good than bad. BJM has stuff that really lives up to the band's classification as a neo-psychedelic role-model, but also a lot of stuff that would be better described as a predecessor to current trends in contemporary indie rock. That is to say, the latter is more "hard", with chords dominating, rather than any 1960's-style lead electric guitar melody. You will notice that BJM's albums tend to stick closely to one style, and then make the next album, perhaps, completely differently; but since this is a compilation, you will not find this to be the case here.

Overall, it's a pretty good introduction to The Brian Jonestown Massacre, although it does have some faults. The organization of the songs could have been better, considering they had two whole CD's to mess with (i.e., could have lined up the songs more "logically"). However, you WILL find any super-great song that you might have heard (from which you presumably decided to research BJM because you liked the style) on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Anything but Tepid!!!.......2007-01-19

I have loved The Brian Jonestown Masscre ever since I first saw them play in SF back in the early 90s. This retrospective is an excellent collection of their work dating from the conception of the band in the 90s up until today. Its a collection that can be appreciated by old fans as well as those who are new to the band. As for the music, well its indescribeable. You have to hear to to believe it!

5 out of 5 stars GOD ANTON!.......2006-11-19

The Brian Jonestown Massacre are the best band you've never heard of. I've always liked them from the beginning and have talked to Anton Newcombe after several shows. He is just the most ordinary, coolest guy ever, except don't mess with him because he don't take lip. He's also got a very sensitive side also and just wants everyone to listen to his music and start a sort of peaceful revolution, just like in the 60's when they used to make music that was halfway as good as this. He's like ALL-IN-ONE, just like God. Everything he says is like scripture, especailly that thing about Eric clapton's baby-he sucks!!! LOL. All you people are idiots for not listening to this band becasue you're too busy listening to hip-hop crap. VIVA LA UNDERGROUND!!!
If you just got into Anton because of D!G, you're just a poseur. I heard of them like back in 2003, so there!

4 out of 5 stars Hard to describe and thats how it should be.......2006-11-16

BJM really is amazing. The influences range from the obvious psychodelic 60s bands like the Animals all the way to Cure, The Kinks?, Dave Clarke 5 et al. The CD really sets a mood and if you are inclined to put your fold up chair on the apex of your roof and bring out the party favors of your choice then BJM should be exactly what you are looking for. Oh, and Open Heart Surgery is like one of the best songs I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars All in One!.......2007-01-23

I think this is a brilliant CD with wonderful guitar solos and vocals, just like in the previous one. This CD is really different from the Room on the 3rd Floor CD, though. It's much more adult, and relates to real-life stuff [if I may say so]. The songs aren't about how a guy can't get a girl anymore... It's progressed into something more, involving refrences to a man entering a mid-life crisis, and a girl commiting suicide. But it's not a bad thing, there are so many other things that contribute to the album. It's like getting the full package: there are insperational songs like "I'll Be OK", break-up songs like "Too Close For Comfort", and the occasional love song, "All About You".

Also, something else that makes this album so awesome is the orcestra that plays in so many of the songs, it just adds so much more depth to the true meaning of the songs. It's a very intense album, very good songs, and there are very good meanings to them. And even though I used the word "intense", and there are those few very powerful songs, It's completly sutible for younger children as well!

So I say everyone should own a copy of this CD, even if you are from the US, It's completly worth the 40$ [I know this because I'm from the US as well]. Just give it a try, you'll be pleasntly surprised with it! x

5 out of 5 stars Hot Album Alert!!!!!!.......2006-09-16

Don't make the mistake of underestimating McFly - this boy band from the UK has delivered an exciting second album. "Wonderland" has gone to number one in the UK, as did their first album "Room on the 3rd Floor".

This album spun off number one hit singles almost by centrifugal force, with "All About You", "I'll Be OK" and "I Wanna Hold You" taking the UK by storm. McFly recently guest starred in the Lindsay Lohan movie "Just My Luck" and played a couple of tracks.

The songs are all excellent, yet all different, and the band credits The Who and Supertramp for inspiration. Second track "I've Got You" is about standing by somebody no matter what, and has some heavy guitar riffs; "Ultraviolet" features sitar music and "The Ballad of Paul K" is about fathers growing old and having things start falling apart.

"It's All About You" is a sixties-sounding retro ballad; and the two-part "She Falls Asleep" with its haunting piano and orchestra is about a girl who commits suicide. It sounds like soundtrack music, and is among the best compositions on the album. You'll remember this one for a long time - it's what would happen if The Beatles and John Williams got together and pooled their best material.

There are no bad tracks on this album, and I highly recommend it to pop music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Watch Out! Here Comes McFly!.......2006-02-05

McFly are a great British pop band. I have been a fan of McFly since their debut album Room on the Third Floor. I couldn't wait for their new album Wonderland to come out, and I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it for the first time. This young band (all aged 20 or younger as of the album release) is exceptionally talented for their age. Amazingly, they write all of the lyrics and music themselves. Impressive? I would say so. All of their songs have a unique style that I just can't get enough of! Rarely do I find an album in which ALL the songs are good. The tracks on Wonderland range from cheerful melodies to touching ballads to some good ol' rock n roll. Since I believe each song deserves to be mentioned, here's an individual song rating:
    1. I'll Be Ok (9/10)- This is a very upbeat song with a good message to it: when things go wrong, just tell yourself 'i'll be ok'. The chorus is very catchy and it's just simply a good, solid pop song. A great way to start off the album.
    2. I've Got You (8.5/10)- This is a happy-go-lucky song about young love. The guitar riffs are very catchy as I find myself humming to the music of this song. The only criticism is that I find some of the lyrics to be a bit corny ( 'cause i've got you to make me feel stronger/ when the days are rough and an hour feels much longer). But this is only a minor fault.
    3. Ultraviolet (9/10)- Oooh, this song is good. The song starts of slow.....then.... BAM!- some great guitar riffs enter and stay throughout the rest of the song. This song shows some good rock n roll- a very summery and beachy song that reminds me of the Beach Boys. Fantastic.
    4. The Ballad of Paul K (9/10)- This song is one-of-a-kind. A ballad? yes. boring? not at all. Somehow the boys manage to keep your interest through a song about a middle-aged man going through a crisis. With easy going music and bold lyrics (look at what you've thrown away/ they've stood beside you all the way/now its too late, its too late for you) this song is a keeper.
    5. I Wanna Hold You (10/10)- One word: Bold. This song makes a statement. It combines awesome guitar playing with lyrics that will get your attention to create a truly fantastic song. Although McFly is a pop band, I'm still going to say it: McFly know how to rock.
    6. Too Close for Comfort (10/10)***- This is definitaly my favorite track on the album, and possibly my favorite McFly song ever. From beginning to end, this song is amazing. It's a remarkable song about breaking up that could bring anyone to tears with true, heart-wrenching lyrics such as "everything i feel for you I wrote down on one piece of paper/the one in your hand/you won't understand how much it hurts to let you go". I love everything about this song and wouldn't change a thing.
    7. All About You (9/10)- Ok, ready? One... Two... Three... awwwwww! This is a fantastic love song that will remind you about that special someone. Its simplicity makes it so beautiful, as well as the serene melody with violins gently playing in the background. Fantastic.
    8. She Falls Asleep (Part 1)(8/10)- A beautiful, no lyric, short, less than two minute orchestra playing melody that gets the listener ready for the second part of the song.
    9. She Falls Asleep (Part 2) (8.5/10)- A very soft, piano and orchestra driven song that is based on the heavy subject of suicide. It's very different from the rest of thier album, but it's very refreshing and peaceful. McFly took a risk with this song, and I love it.
    10. Don't Know Why (10/10)- For some reason, this song grabs my attention. Somehow, each instrument stands out in its own unique way. The lyrics are very simple but meaningful at the same time, dealing with the harsh reality of broken dreams and relationships (no matter what you say to me/ we are not the same). Overall, it's just a great song.
    11. Nothing (9/10)- The album returns to it's cheerful pop melodies, as in the beginning of the album. This is another song about lost love that has a catchy tune that you just can't get enough of. Overall, this song is a carefree, good pop tune.
    12. Memory Lane (9/10)- A great way to end the album. This is a great song for reminiscing over old photographs and high school yearbooks. Very nice and well put together. It ends the album with the chanting chorus "so much has changed".

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding second album from a truly special band.......2005-11-08

"Wonderland" is the second album by McFly, and just like the brilliant first "Room on the Third Floor" it lives it up to it's high expectations. Every song on this is a classic from the hits "I'll Be OK" and "All About You" to the outstanding "Memory Lane". This really is an essential album, I really hope the boys find success in the US, they truly deserve it.

Nils guitar work is amazing on this. The solos on Daddy Dream and Deadline scream! The classic Nils album.

5 out of 5 stars Wondrous Classic Wonderland!.......2007-07-19

One of the best guitarists in the world today. Period.
I still have my vinyl copy. I just bought this CD here. I bought the album the day it came out back in 1983?
The thing with this album is that it is a three piece powerhouse. Andy Newmark on Drums, Kevin McCormick on Bass, Nils on Guitars/Vocals. Yeah an overdub here or there but, really a natural rawness for the time which it's recorded. Nils' guitar playing is some of my favorite from his entire recorded history. Not long after this he became an E Streeter. Where he touched the Springsteen sound LIVE with a style and class that only Nils could bring to the table. The perfect foil for that band. Across the Tracks is an unrealised or at least underpromoted hit single.
This is Nils Lofgren in full maturity. It is my favorite Nils studio album after Cry Tough. It is a great, great, great addition to any collection.

Great to have this cd available here in the USA for the first time!A solid album.Let's hope more of his long out of print albums start to show up on cd.

Chip Davis's Mannheim Steamroller hasn't lost any ground in the six years since their last Yuletide offering. Christmas Extraordinare is another innovative and heartfelt collection of seasonal treasures played on a combination of 18th-century instruments and modern-day synthesizers, drums, and electric guitars. While not the first to marry different ages of musical instruments, Davis and his cohorts use them with imagination and an intensity that gives new life and drama to this rather inert genre. For material, Mannheim Steamroller asked their fans to choose their favorite holiday selections and vote on their Web site. The results of the poll are a fine mix of old and new--with slightly more emphasis on the modern--ranging from the bracing "Fum, Fum, Fum," a traditional Catalan carol, to Tchaikovsky's "Faeries" from The Nutcracker. Mannheim Steamroller imbues this beloved song with an almost militaristic edge, grounding it with an ominous tuba that gives the usually fey "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" an edgy tension. "Winter Wonderland" is a spectacular work, bordering on prog rock, as if Emerson, Lake & Palmer had re-formed to whip up a winter blizzard gone amok. While most of the Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums are largely instrumental, Davis has employed the considerable talents of University of Michigan's Glee Club to sing on "O Tannenbaum," respectfully fading their elegant, full vocals around the pristine voice of Johnny Mathis, elevating this German carol to a cinematic peak. Don't miss out on the clever liner notes, which give the reader a whimsical, anecdotal history of the 12 songs. --Jaan Uhelszki

I own quite a few of Mannheim Steamroller cd's and love them all.

    4 out of 5 stars I like it.......2006-12-18

Although, anyone should definately buy their first two albums from the 80s first, this is much calmer and more sophisticated. The first two albums are much more upbeat and inticing. This is still some beautiful Christmas music though. It's relaxed and possibly more suitable for the parents (not that children wouldn't like it) and creates a really great chilled out loving mood.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas tunes from Mannheim Steamroller.......2006-12-06

This was a pleasure to listen to again! It makes nice background yule-tyde music for the winter solitice holiday celebration. The birth of Jesus also represents the growing length of sunlight and rebirth of life. Also smartly included are Johnny Mathis (O Tannenbaum),University of Michigan Men's Glee Club,Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum Women's Choir, Almeda Berkey directing. They should continue to stick with Christmas standard classics and stay away from the Halloween tunes. This wintertime CD from Mannheim Steamroller is extraordinaire indeed!

    2 out of 5 stars Christmas Extraordinaire.......2006-02-26

I am a fan of Mannheim Steamroller and had high expectations for this CD. This is not quite as good as their older Christmas Cd's. It is ok but far from what it could have been.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't Really meet the test of time.......2006-01-05

With no offense intended to Mannheim Steamroller, I just wasn't very excited about this CD. Probably the best thing on here is the Nutcracker selection, but nothing stands out as being original or a fresh look at music. The best thing I think that can be said about it came from my father, who heard it at Christmas, and said "At least it doesn't sound like all their other music." So, if you are tired of hearing the standard radio playlist of Chip Davis, this might be refreshing. On the other hand, if none of the selections from CHRISTMAS EXTRAORDINAIRE are being played, then probably none are very good (or popular).

In retrospect, I wish I had gotten FRESH AIRE, which I recognize as having some of my favorite Mannheim Steamroller songs. I'm not throwing this CD away, but it won't be on the top of my Christmas music pile either.

Resplendent in voice and manner, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti deliver 21 songs of traditional sacred music and secular numbers in a remarkable 1999 live recording from the opulent Viennese concert hall (Konzerthaus), with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and a renowned choir. The Three Tenors are practically as famous as the faces of Mount Rushmore and inspire perhaps even more awe and adulation around the world than the four presidents. The performances--whether alone, in tandem, or simply as the threesome that has made them collectively famous--are generally impeccable for their passion, nuance, and sheer tour de force vocal artistry. Reaching often into the classical realm for such works as the traditional German carol "Susani," Strauss's and Brahms's "Wiegenlied," plus traditional Polish and Spanish pieces, the trio also visits Pavarotti's "Ave Maria, dolce Maria" (cowritten with Vittoriano Benvenuti), and "Un nuevo siglo," written by Domingo's son. Only John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas/War Is Over" doesn't quite work in this grand setting. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Different & Addicting! And All Your Friends Will Be Calling HOO-HOO!.......2005-08-23

First, let me state I don't listen to opera singers that much; thus, don't expect a hypercritical review here. (Really, is there ANY field of music that has more hypercritics than opera?) I got this CD simply because Columbia House had it on sale for $2.99, and I wanted some new Christmas CDs.

I found the CD delightful beyond words. It has some beautiful versions of well-known Christmas songs, as well as songs I've never heard before. "Carol of the Drum" and "War Is Over" are my two favorites, with "Sleigh Ride" a close third.

Sure, there is some tripping over of words by these three great opera stars...but that makes it even more enhancing in my opinion. Pavarotti was particularly amusing when he was singing: "And all our friends are calling 'HOO-HOO'!" (Watch the DVD for Carreras' reaction to that one!) And let's not forget Pavarotti singing: "I'll be home for Christmas. You can PLAY on me."

The children's chorus is great, the Vienna Symphony is great...and, once again, buy or rent the DVD so you can get the full affect of this astounding Christmas concert...the music, the lights, the colors, and the marvelous Steven Mercurio conducting it all.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and funny compilation.......2005-03-09

The Three Tenors are, of course, wonderful to listen to. This is also a funny CD. When they sing the more modern songs (Happy Christmas by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, for example) they have trouble keeping up with the pace of the song. They almost sound like they're tripping over the syllables, because as opera singers they are more accustomed to long, drawn out vowels, not fast ones. This doesn't hurt the song at all, it makes it more interesting to listen to. It's a great CD. I would recommend this as an addition to any collection of Christmas music.

    5 out of 5 stars A historical meeting..........2004-11-28

Although several labels already had Christmas albums of the three tenors in their catalogue, the three maestros never actually trioed on these releases. When Plácido Domingo and the "Christmas in Vienna" team started preparing the eighth concert in the series (six predecessors were captured by Sony, and one, titled "Celebration of Christmas" issued by Erato-Warner), they made a monumental decision: Re-uniting three of the greatest voices of the current music business.
For one and a half hour, Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti performed the greatest Christmas songs and carols from around the world. Nearly 65 minutes of this monumental concert are captured on this disk. The opening version of "O Holy Night" (aka "Cantique De Noel", "Minuit, Chrétien") by Domingo and Pavarotti would be reason enough to get this one. But wait, there is far more on the way, than selections from the classical genre. The real enjoyment starts, when the three tenors do one of the most romantic arrangements of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" ever heard and fade from a rousing "La Virgen Lava Pa`nales" into one of the finest treatments of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" ever heard. Also of great interest is the trio arrangement of "Let It Snow!", which is included on some of the import versions and on the DVD.
    If you are a hopeless completist like me, you may be asking, what happened to the 25 minutes cut from the CD release. Well, first let me say, that none of the currently available releases has the order of the songs as they were performed in the concert. Although this is a live recording, handclaps and other characteristics of a live recording are hardly audible on the CD version. Two tracks, "Jingle Bells" and "Let It Snow", which had clearly audible handclaps at the beginning and at the end of the performance (and therefore couldn't be faded out) can be found on the mentioned import disk and on the DVD's PCM soundtrack. "Children of Christmas" (a Plácido Domingo Jr. composition originally introduced in "Christmas In Vienna IV" by Plácido Domingo and Michael Bolton) and "Ay" Para Navidad" can be found exclusively on the DVD. Currently unavailable on any official release is the "Overture" (which can be found on the DVD, but abridged with sound effects). So here's the actual running order: "Overture", 20, 2, 1, 11, 3, 4, "Children of Christmas", 16, 17, 6, 15, 8, "Let it snow", 5, "Ay! Para Navidad", 9, 19, 14, 18, 12, 13, "Jingle Bells", 7, 21, 10;
If you still doubt about the quality of this performance, let me say one for sure: As other volumes in the series will slowly disappear (as some of them have already in the US), this one is a matter of decades and when you buy this one, you will have joyful Christmas hours for many, many Christmases to come.

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah Chin

    5 out of 5 stars Dream a dream.......2007-04-03

I bought this CD after watching the music video of the same name. Their performance of "dream a dream" is exquisite. The fact that they wrote the lyrics just adds icing to an already magnificent cake!

5 out of 5 stars This girl has Potential (I wish the press would back off)!!!!!!.......2007-03-01

You know charlotte church has received so much harsh critismn about her,I find that people were jeolous of her voice, and of how a young girl can sing, she is definetly my dream ome true, (So back off johnathan flanders),this girl in the past has done some wonderful music which is inspirational and she is a wonderful person, I dont care whether she has changed, anyway her rock albumn has given me a lease on life and has given me potential in my singing,I love your voice very much, and this reviewer hasnt been written by a kid at all,if charlotte church is reading this, good on yeah girl, you definetly my dream come true, and I hope I will see you one day. your best friend JJCox

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Christmas music lovers.......2006-12-07

this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous! .......2005-12-07

Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.
