4 out of 5 stars Another Best Of .......2007-06-20

For some artists it is relatively easy to list a best of collection but not so The Ventures. Don't get me wrong this is an excellent album and is well worth a look but I am not sure it is a better "best of" than a few of their other "best of" albums.

4 out of 5 stars Walk--Don't Run: The Best of the Ventures.......2007-05-20

The new versions of the songs not as good as the Original ones

5 out of 5 stars The VENTURES, what can I say?!?!?!.......2006-12-16

The best instrumental band of all time! They've gotta be! And they're still around! Well, what's cool about them is that on these recordings, their drummer, Mel Taylor, has just made it in my Top 5 drummers of all times! Well, after he died, his son took over the drummer duties for the Ventures!

This collection is basically songs from the 60's that made the Ventures what they are, THE BEST at what they do!

This is probably the best collection of their songs that you can get. It's set at a great price as well!

5 out of 5 stars Thru the Past Looking for the Sounds of Future .......2006-07-19

Long, long years ago I listened this beautiful sounds.
It's very nice to can meet the future thru the magic of past!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Doesn't Seem To Age Well.......2006-06-21

I am being generous with 4 stars. It seems to me that the music sounds dated and doesn't age well. Not particularly interesting with so much other instrumental music to choose from. Also, the curse of any "best of" album is that there is always going to be something missing that someone thinks should be on there. Wasn't Pipeline a big, big Ventures hit? Also Telstar was quite popular too. Those are the only two Ventures songs that I recall getting consistent radio play, but perhaps I just missed hearing a lot of the other songs. Still, the album seems incomplete without Pipeline. Some of the songs are more interesting and innovative than others, which is why this probably deserves 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Ventures - still the best.......2007-01-10

This is a great copy of the best of the Ventures. Good sound quality of the oldies but goodies.

4 out of 5 stars The Ventures All-Time Greatest Hits.......2006-10-30

4 Stars only because the hit mix of "Walk Don't Run" - clean as it is - is not really STEREO. It COULD have been because EMI has the catalog of all these old Liberty and Dolton Records releases. In fact, EMI did put the stereo original of "Walk Don't Run" on its "24 Greatest Hits of All Time" CD released back in 1991.

That said, the STEREO and recordings are GREAT on ALL these other Ventures original tracks that made the national charts. Worth the purchase, and the purchase price, if you can forgive the otherwise just-short-of-perfect version of "Walk Don't Run."

5 out of 5 stars Cute 60's surf music.......2004-02-02

Everytime he picks up his guitar, my boyfriend has to make "Walk, don't run" and he enjoy doing it (that smile on his face!). So the other day I asked him who was the band and he had no clue (his answer was 1960 music with guys dressed with ties).

How can I find who's playing with so less informations. I just took a similar song that I knew "Sleep walk" by Farina and I found the Ventures within 10 minutes (they also performed that song).

I knew 80% of the songs on their album!! No wonder the songs are so cute but very short songs. Hard to decide which one is my favorite as they have all some character.

Okay, I will also buy the album they did on TV themes

5 out of 5 stars Excellent instrumentals by the kings of instrumentals........2002-04-14

This is a great compilation of the Ventures greatest hits, although they could've put more songs on here, the Ventures had alot more hits than 12 songs. Although I gave it five stars because all the tracks are wonderful. Here is a list of the songs and how I rate each one.

1. Walk Don't Run-Excellent track, the Ventures' greatest hit.
2. Prefidia-Great song but it sounds like a slower version of Walk Don't Run.
3.Hawaii Five-0-One of my favorites from the album AWESOME SONG
4.Summer Place-Also one of my favs.
5.Secret Agent Man-Got that James Bond feel to it.EXCELLENT
6.Lolita Ya-Ya-Alright song, not as good as the others.
7.Wipe Out-Also another good song, fast and talented drumming.
8.Slaughter on Tenth Avenue-Ventures second best track.
9.Diamond Head-GREAT
10.Ram-Bunk-Shush-GREAT
11.Blue Moon-Great
12.Lullaby of the Leaves-GREAT

Also a great album for younger audiences too. Hey I'm thirteen, and I like them alot. GREAT BAND.

Album Description

"Moonlight In Vermont" may have made Johnny Smith famous, but this 1954 session with rhythm guitarist Perry Lopez, bassist Arnold Fishkin and drummer Don Lamond is his masterpiece. Originally issued over two 10" LPs, these 13 songs shows an innovative guitarist with astonishing technique and lightning-fast mind. These gems are ripe for rediscovery in the guitar world. The closing "Lullaby Of Birdland" features Smith playing a duet with himself through early overdubbing. The title tune, a Johnny Smith original, became a Top Ten hit six years later for The Ventures. Remastered in 24 bit from the original mono tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Classic guitar playing.......2006-11-10

How does one rate a singularity? There aren't enough stars. Johnny Smith is one of a kind and we all should be grateful to have the benefit of his talent and love for music and the guitar.

5 out of 5 stars great cd WORTHLESS COPY PROTECT.......2006-11-10

I agree with all ppl saying this cd is wirth the money and contains great music, i really really do, therefor the 5 stars.

Now for rating the publisher minus 1278 stars, beware of new issues with "copy controlled" copy protection for it sucks big time. The cd might encounter "some problems on certain players like carstereo's ".
Well let me tell you, the thing will only play on my pc and on my cd player. I cant play it on any other stereo and not even on some ppl's normal cd players...... i thought about checking every cd i buy from now for the stamp of the copy protection being on or not but i see here that amazon doesnt have a picture where it is on the cd. So how can i be sure my next cd will not have the same stupid gimmick on it...
I will not buy any EMI cd's printed after 2004 anymore....

Enjoy a REALLY REALLY great cd but DO remember i warned you:)

5 out of 5 stars The original "Walk, don't run".......2006-07-29

Until this CD came out last summer you had to either buy the Mosaic 8 disc set or the Japanese release of Kaleidoscope to hear Johnny play "Walk, don't run." Well, now you can hear it and it, alone, is worth the price of the disc. After hearing Johnny's version it's amazing how simple the Ventures' version seems. Even the great Chet Atkins played WDR for Johnny one time and Johnny graciously started playing along and Chet was speechless. Everything else is great on this disc too. Johnny Smith is legendary among jazz guitarists. Deservedly so. His chords and voicings are unlike anyone else. Then his single note lines are so fluid but musical. This is a great place to start listening to Johnny and also the Moonlight in Vermont CD, as well as Legends. Perhaps the greatest thing about Johnny is at the height of his popularity he gave it all up and left NYC to take care of his daughter after his wife's death. He never regretted it he says. You have, then, a music legend with the right priorities. A true class act. What will be really great is if Verve will ever put out their Johnny Smith CD (with his Gibson model on the cover)or someone will release his solo album, "The Man with the Blue Guitar" on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording, great artist.......2005-09-30

I mainly bought this CD to hear the original recording of "Walk Don't Run." Johnny Smith wrote it, Chet Atkins covered it, etc. For those of us who only ever heard the Ventures' version, it is a revelation that this was originally a jazz tune.

Oh yeah, the rest of the CD is excellent. Johnny Smith has very few recordings available, to my knowledge. I encourage all students and/or admirers of fine, melodic playing to seek out all of them.

5 out of 5 stars The Legend of Smith.......2005-09-22

Johnny Smith a few years was essentially a forgotten man. Not well known amongst jazz guitarists, let alone the wider jazz community, a few years ago the vast majority of this man's work was out of print. Thankfully, all that is changing with releases such as this. 'Walk, don't run!' proves why Smith has been held in awe by his peers and fans alike and bears testimony to why he is regarded as one of the foremost post Charlie Christian guitarists. From the lightning fast runs of 'What's New' and 'Lover Man' to the chordal sophistication of 'Sophisticated Lady' and the boppish lines of 'I'll remember April' and ''S Wonderful', Smith was the complete musician. He has often been described as a 'scientist' because of the precision with which he plays; but don't let that put you off: his music is anything but cerebral. It's just that Smith had the most prodigious technique to express anything he wanted to with a beautiful, poetic tone: an artist and scientist in equal measure.

If you are a fan of jazz guitar this recording is essential. If you are a fan of jazz this record is still essential. For those of you who feel perhaps that the guitar still doesn't 'cut it' like horns do, an anecdote: when Smith played at Birdland, Bird himself was one of Smith's biggest fans, consistently sitting near the front listening intently to Smith. That in itself should be good enough recommendation to buy this.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ventures Deal Available Today ! ! !.......2007-06-14

I've been a Ventures fan since 1960. That's a long time. I owned dozens of vinyl albums and now own a stack of CD's. For awhile, the best deals on The Ventures were the OneWay Records "2fers". I suspect the high sales of these items soon made the Ventures aware of the CD market and they are no longer available at the bargain prices they were originally. That's the bad news. The good news is that this England import is as good as it gets! The content was recorded primarily in the late '90's and the quality is outstanding. Just as important, the songs have a little update feel while retaining that good old original good time rock and roll feeling. The thing that makes this triple CD set most special though, is that the fun the Ventures had recording these songs comes through the speakers and hits you right in the face! It's almost impossible to find this many songs and not find a few disappointments. There are none here. To an old time fan or a brand new one, this three diamond jewel is a MUST!!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-12

I am a great Ventures fan (who isn't?) but was out of touch without a single CD from the group. So as I was shopping on Amazon's fabulous site, I was mind-boggled looking at all the choices availalbe. First of all, I new all Ventures music was great so there wasn't really a question as to which set of songs to buy. The question was - how to get the most. The answer is in this incredible CD! It has 63 tracks for a super price of about $[...]. So 'Buy, Don't wait!' (to paraphrase Ventures!). The sound quality is great to me and I am not one of those audiophiles who can pick out a stray noise.

I don't have to list all the songs, just look at the track listing. For those of you new to Ventures (yea, there will always be as my 12 year old), just listen to 'Tequila', 'Pipeline', 'Wipe Out' and of course, 'Walk Don't Run'. Incredible guitar - sets the standars! Also, I am always thrilled to hear the James Bond Theme played by the group. Again, Buy, don't wait!

4 out of 5 stars An overlooked anthology.......2006-08-03

I bought this CD on a whim but it turns out to be a great value for $13.99. It contains all their best songs but, with this disclaimer, they are new recordings. But, that said, these new tracks sound great as they were recorded on equipment using modern technology.
Their version of Pipeline is the second-best version ever - sorry, nobody can improve on the original by the Chantays. I record a lot of compilations and the Ventures make a great seque between several genres of music.

5 out of 5 stars The Ventures Still Have It!!!.......2005-01-09

The Ventures have aged like fine wine and keep rolling on which is a true testament to their great abilities! Sometimes when an artist rerecord their hits, it doesn't work, but these guys reinvent themselves and make the hits sound like they were recorded yesterday. The nice thing about this collection is that the Ventures not only have included their own hits of the past but many other artists' instrumental hits; a great collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Ventures - More fabulous than ever!.......2005-01-09

3 CDs - 63 great tracks of classics. Five stars? Make that 10!

First, the soud quality: Simply exceptional. All the tracks contained in this set were recorded from 1995 to 2002. So all up to date technology. Rich, bold and perfect.

The price: 3 CDs for the price of one. Bargain you say? Just browse around. Rarely will you find music of this quality under 20$ apiece.

All these newly recorded classics take nothing away from the old originals we know. They are only better. Only the Ventures can make the best even better. A delight, a treat for our ear... buds! 63 tracks, all hits, not a weak one.

Listen, dance, twist and rock to Walk Don't Run and Walk Don't Run '64 of course, Pipeline, Percolator, Wheels, Let's Go, Teen Beat, Wipe Out, Rebel Rouser, Duane Eddy's 40 Miles of Bad Road, Jerry Lee Lewis piano style Tall Cool One, Drums A Go Go, Memphis, California Sun, The Happy Organ, Let There Be Drums, Bongo Rock, etc. Groove for over 5 minutes (featuring sax and guitars) with Honky Tonk. Film or tv themes such as Hawaii Five 0, Batman Theme, Peter Gunn, Out of Limits and the James Bond Theme with that added Ventures touch of rock & roll that makes it even better than the original. Finally, take it smooth and relax with beautiful classic ballads such as Sleepwalk, Maria Elena, Last Date.

Close to 3 hours of pure musical enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Fine, fine playing!!.......2006-07-06

Like 700 million other people, this is one of the albums which turned me on to playing the guitar and I haven't stopped since. This is where the Ventures truly hit their stride, the re-furbished version of their original early '60s hit propelled by Don Wilson's pipeline inspired muted guitar accompaniment. it is also where they began using Semie Mosley's "Ventures" guitar model, giving them that distinctive "Ventures" sound. I recently purchased a DVD of one of their recent performances. It happily confirmed to me that Nokie Edwards was and remains one of the great players of country/rock and roll and pop guitar. This album has a great selection of tunes, from the refurbished Walk Don't Run to Diamond head, Pedal Pusher and a raunchy House of the Rising Sun. One additional point: check out the look on Mel Taylor's (brother of Larry Taylor)face - priceless!! Anyone who hasn't been into the Ventures before, buy this album!! It is a classic and truly is one which would accompany me on a desert island, right next to the Beatles' Revolver, Clapton's D&D, and Hendrix's Electric Ladyland. Classic stuff!!

      5 out of 5 stars A great one.......2003-12-10

This album has inspired and inspiring performances of some of Ms. Kane's best songs from her first two studio albums.

"A Thousand Girls", "Tucson", "The Problem With Jazz" and, of course, "Off the Ground" are really wonderful to listen to. I am also glad to hear that the recording features a bit of her honest, funny between-song patter.

I like it as well as her most recent album Rain and Mud and Wild and Green.

If you like the Indigo Girls and similar folk or folk rock acts, it's time you heard Christine Kane.

      5 out of 5 stars a great vicarious fix.......2003-11-02

I had never heard of Christine Kane before a friend invited me to one of her shows, and these were the things that amazed me after seeing her perform live: 1. that we were not in a packed-full stadium full of fans throwing flowers and/or themselves onto the stage, and 2. that I myself had enough restraint as to not do that in front of the 80 or so people at this particular performance.

Her shows are like that, and so is her Live cd. It's true: she is a phenomenal lyricist and musician and that is evident on all of her cds. But to me, the thing that sets Ms. Kane apart from the pack and keeps me wanting more is the energy and style of her live performances, and her Live cd captures that experience. Like her shows, Christine Kane Live is fun, spirited, generous, thoughtful, dear, sexy, smart, sassy, real, and at times, just short of being raunchy, which we love. It's just her and her guitar, doing what she does --- which is to give so much to her audience that we all feel wonderfully spoiled. I have been listening to this cd for more than a year now and I still just love it. I always feel like I've given myself a treat when I listen to it ... not only is it really great music, but listening to her Live cd transports me back to that delightful gift of being in her audience.

If you've never been to one of Ms. Kane's performances, I highly recommend getting to one. And if you can't immediately make it to one of her shows, my suggestion is to drop her Live cd directly into the shopping cart and proceed to checkout ... it's a great vicarious fix!

1 out of 5 stars Mr. Breakstone: Walk Don't Ruin It!.......2002-11-17

This guy is obviously just trying to cash in on the Ventures fame, but what I found most disturbing was his liner notes. He bashes surf music and surf music fans while going on about how he's improved on the music. Whatever dude!

      Your music isn't that great.

4 out of 5 stars An outstanding CD of swing jazz........1999-03-23

All of Joshua Breakstone's releases are at least above average, but this CD, and "Self-Portrait In Swing" are especially good. This is a can't miss CD that you will enjoy when you first get up in the morning, or in the evening, as you are winding down your day. Highly recommended.
