3 out of 5 stars porcupine tree - Metanoia.......2007-01-14

ya 3 stars , i was a little unhappy with this cd . its good , but not great . a little to space age type music for me .the drummer 'chris maitland' and bass player 'colin edwin' are great. i just found this cd to drag on and get a little boreing . the remaster sound is great . hopefuly in time this cd will grow on me ! oh ya the talking crap needs to be junked ...talk about a waste of cd space !

3 out of 5 stars I dont' really know what to make of this--sort of good-ish i guess........2006-09-22

I sort of enjoy this release, and as the other reviewer mentioned it makes for pretty good chilled out background music. I do however feel that Attention Deficit set a benchmark for jam session collections with their self titled album, and that comparatively this release just lacks in overall delivery. There's just not enough going on on this album to get me excited, it's all just too...polite. Porcupine tree is a great band and they are a supremely talented bunch of blokes, but be advised that this is WAY different to what they normally do and should be approached with a very OPEN mind and a large tumbler of your favourite chill-out drink. (or a fat double blader if you're so inclined...)

4 out of 5 stars Great "Background" Jam Music.......2006-06-03

I enjoy listening to this while talking on the phone or playing on the computer. It's sort- of neat background music that doesn't distract your attention much. Every now and then a synthesizer part will "bust- loose" and catch your attention, but for the most part the music here drifts in the back of your consciousness and is quite relaxing. This is actually quite uncarachteristic of Porcupine Tree music which commands strict attention (not that that's a bad thing!) Chris Maitland's drumming on here is exquisite (as always!) Love the fretless bass of Colin Edwin and Steven's Keys and guitar parts soar at times. Miss Richard, though ,and his mellotron on some of these tracks! I wouldn't consider this "essential" but to me, a die- hard fan, I am glad that I own it.

Product Description

This is the second release from the fantastic band from Ukraine which interleaves Celtic folk influences with the speed riffing and technicality of death and black metal. Originally released only in Ukraine, Bombworks Records has made this incredible CD available for the rest of the world to hear. This release features more Celtic influences and more melody than the first release, with a heavier emphasis on integrating the flute with the heavy guitars. It is also an enhanced CD, including as a bonus the video recorded for the incredible song "The Spring".

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Folk Metal!.......2006-05-27

Several years ago while surfing the Web I found a strange band by the name of Holy Blood. I downloaded one of their songs and was simply amazed at their style. This is an extremely talented Ukrainian folk metal band.

The songs on this album include:

1. Intro (instrumental)
2. To Heaven
3. The Spring
4. Jerusalem
5. I Flow Towards the Fate
6. Baptising of the Rus (instrumental)
7. In the Last Battle
8. Fair
9. Waves are Dancing
10. Outro (instrumental)

I like every single one of these songs. Each song is well crafted, and they aren't repetetive.

There are probably tons of bands out there that play folk metal now. I haven't heard that many folk metal bands so I can't really say if this is the cream of the crop. I have heard of an interesting German folk metal band called "Schandmaul" and I would recommend that band, although these two bands are completely different. They both play folk metal but that's the only comparison that can be made. On this album Holy Blood plays a mix of symphonic black death folk metal, whereas Schandmaul plays "just" folk rock metal.

Note: if you are thinking on purchasing the "The Wanderer" album by this band you need to know that it isn't the same style. It's a more brutal style of metal but it isn't folk metal at all. It's still good, but it's not the same and I don't want anyone to get disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-05-08

This is very, very heavy, very technical, creative and innovative death metal from a Christian band from Germany, who are just honest and sincere and don't try to force their beliefs down anyone's throat. Its as technical as Obituary, the vocals are deep, and very strong in the mix, not buried, riffs are medium to fast pace. The third song lasts over eight minutes and it is great. Best songs Come Closer and Existence.

The production is first class. The lyrics are nearly understandable. One song is in German, the rest in English. It can be ordered through Whilwind Records in Germany.

Visionaire's debut release of ambient, often Gothic, Doom/Death that combines heavy guitars with haunting atmospheres and ethereal passages. Surreal and alternate world like, with dark moody undertones. Fans of My Dying Bride and Celestial Season will especially enjoy this offering. Mystical Dominion was originally released in 1998, and went out of print that next year, making Blastbeat's top selling indie album of 1999. This 2005 version has 2 newly recorded bonus tracks "Burning Ground" and "Nethiel Part 1". "Beautiful, haunting, Scandinavian type gothic/doom. You'd never think "Mystical Dominion" was made by only one person - the music is so much varied and the instruments are played so tightly, even the vocals are superb! The new album is more gothic influenced, but still on the same musical level." AngelFire "This is a high quality release, both in layout design and music." Alex Cantwell Chronicles of Chaos

      4 out of 5 stars Finally..........2005-04-06

Finally, Mortification has released a good cd. They haven't had a good cd since 1993's Post Momentary Affliction! Brain Cleaner is the cd that should've followed Post Momentary Affliction instead of Blood World. Steve Rowe is growling again, and not the high, wimpy growling that's more like talking. His growling is sometimes low, and other times, the really deep growling as was on Scrolls of the Megilloth, and Post Momentary affliction. Lyrically, this cd is more creative than in recent years, but not quite as creative as Mortification's earlier stuff. Nonetheless, the lyrics are still Satan-hating. This is not a perfect cd, but still a breath of fresh air for fans of early Mortification.

          Album Description

These improvisations were recorded during the recording sessions for 'Signify' and were originally issued as a limited edition double 10 inch vinyl of 1000 copies in 1998 by Chromatic/Delerium Records. This CD edition contains 2 additional tracks which were recorded during the same sessions. 'Door To The River' is the last section of the improvisation recorded in Cambridge on July 13th 1995, but unlike the rest of the music it was overdubbed and reconstructed in the studio shortly afterwards. The track 'Insignificance' is the missing piece that bridged 'Intermediate Jesus' and 'Metanoia II' in the original March 4th 1996 recording.

3 out of 5 stars For those who have a taste for Apple Jams..........2006-11-12

Chris T.'s review of this disc actually put the whole thing together for me...I couldn't have said it any better. For whatever it's worth, though, I'll add this.

I'm a recent convert to the Tree and have been absolutely off the chain NUTS for their music for the last 2½ months. I've been listening to little else since being turned on to them and haven't been this bonked-out by a band since first hearing the music of YES in mid-1971. I now own 6 PT discs and, God willing, will eventually own all of them. They are that good. I'm telling anyone I think would be interested about their music (as well as Steve Wilson's side project, Blackfield.) I tell people that comparisons to Pink Floyd are valid, and that they are, for me, THE progressive rock band of the new millennium. If prog rock hangers-on like Yes, Tull, Floyd & King Crimson are soon to permanently lay down their banners, then we will be fortunate indeed to have PT around to carry on in their stead (and--going by what little I've heard from them so far--Glass Hammer and IQ).

All of this being said, I think I was drawn to purchase METANOIA (from a 3rd-party seller who, thankfully, sold it for a very reasonable price) from what I'd heard about it: that it consisted of long instrumental improvisations, something that for the most part I've always liked about what we know as progressive rock; having heard PT's instrumental forays from other discs, I thought this one was worth a look into. And, as I mentioned earlier, Chris's review of the material pretty much sums up how I reacted to it as well. The way I'd put it is this: If you're a fan of what is arguably George Harrison's greatest album, ALL THINGS MUST PASS--and you like the Apple Jams sessions from that album--then you'll be best equipped to appreciate what PT is attempting on METANOIA. If you enjoy the quality of musicianship they all possess, then this can make for nice background listening, not to be taken too seriously (especially the intentionally-silly disc closer, "Milan," which has the boys in an Italian restaurant, perusing the menu...reminds me of kind of a half-baked attempt at a Monty Python moment). In conclusion, it comes to this: METANOIA's basically a disc for PT completists. It's not a piece of tripe, but not one you'd want to necessarily want to waste large amounts of time and money in the pursuit of. The sticker on the disc's shrink wrap included the sardonic line, "File under self-indulgent." If that comment came with the band's blessing, it sounds as if they're in agreement with us.

3 out of 5 stars Like Chris said: a little too much filler!.......2002-07-25

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all of "PORCUPINE TREE'S" Cd's, but this one is more of a New Age Instrumental Jam Background Disk. Very well Produced and Performed (Time & Patience make's it flow), I like it for it's uniqueness, but then again I like all of PT's Disk, Don't like to compare but they are the closest any band has come in the last 20 years to have that "PINK FLOYD" Feel... (try Spock's Beard for a "YES" & " GENTLE GIANT" touch...)
Recommended for true followers & fans, if you haven't heard them before start with Lightbulb Sun, Signify or Stupid Dream...
The early stuff is also excellent....
Maybe with a little more listening they might get 4 stars.
Peace.... while you Watch the "Sky move Sideways"

3 out of 5 stars Poem without words.......2002-05-31

During the last 15 month or so, Porcupine Tree's record labels decided to release a string of albums and EP singles, including two compilation, limited editions, and some obscure material, so it has become increasingly difficult even for dedicated fans to follow the band's course. I'm not quite sure if Steve Wilson is happy about the cash-in strategy of his former record labels (he has recently signed to Atlantic Records), but I certainly appreciate the fact that so many PT records are now made available for a wider public. The sticker on the front cover of „Metanoia" tells us that the improvisations on this disc, which vary in length from 4 ½ to more than 14 minutes, were recorded live during the „Signify" studio sessions, so my expectations were quite high; firstly, „Signify" was a magical album from start to finish and features some of the band's best work, secondly, I've always been a fan of the band's live sound, and thirdly, I find it interesting to listen to a work in progress. Great conditions, so what went wrong? Although PT are certainly no strangers to the idea of jamming along in concert and studio - with excellent results as documented on the „Coma Divine" live album and the b-sides collection „Recordings" - the approach on „Metanoia" often feels very monotonous, with minimal variation in arrangements, tempos, and moods throughout the 65-minute disc. Sure, the musicianship on „Metanoia" is excellent as always since Barbieri's warm electronic undercurrents mesh effortlessly with Maitland's crisp drumming, Edwin's slap bass, and Wilson's sonic excursions, but it's the lack of recognizable tunes and the high level of repetition that sabotages many of the tracks here; in contrast to other PT improvisations, like „Cure for optimism" and „Untitled", much of „Metanoia" is entirely unmemorable and comes across as a series of rather pointless ambient interludes and meandering noodlings. In my opinion, the three-part suite „Mesmer" is the most engaging material on this disc, alternating between tightly constructed, rhythm-oriented parts and wonderfully atmospheric sections which primarily derive from laid-back guitar textures and spacey synth sounds. The 13-minute „Mesmer III/Coma Divine" is a little more experimental than its companion pieces and works particularly well as it moves from a somewhat chaotic and harrowing collage of vocal samples to disturbing guitar atmospherics (not a million miles away from the solo work of Robert Fripp) and finally to beautifully evolving synth/guitar textures with some de-facto melodies. It's not quite in the same league as PT's best material, but respectable `chill-out music' nontheless. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the 14-minute „Metanoia I/Intermediate Jesus", which grows stale very quickly because there's no dynamic movement in the instrumentation. The shorter piece „Door to the river" also repeat the formula of ponderous anti-rhythms and directionless guitar/bass snippets without noticeable changes, while the 11-minute „Metanoia II" and „Insignificance" manage to introduce a few nice guitar effects and faster rhythms towards the end. However, there simply isn't enough going on here to make this album (unlike many other PT releases) a regular in my CD player: Too much filler exists, and although the sound quality is remarkably mature for a bunch of half-finished recordings, there's very little here which displays Wilson's songwriting capabilities and his flair for dramatic compositions and deeply delivered lyrics. Thus, „Metanoia" is probably left best for converted PT fans who favor the band's early, spaced-out phase to the more song-oriented format that would dominate their recent records. My advice: Make sure that you own every other commercially available PT album before buying „Metanoia".
