Album Description

As a member of Blue, Lee Ryan was a part of one of the biggest acts of his era. His solo debut single 'Army of Lovers' is a good indication of the stripped-back sound of his first self-titled album. Eschewing easy U.S. R&B references for more classic soul influences from Marvin Gaye, Maxwell and Luther Vandross, and mingling this with acoustic instrumentation has produced a strong, unique sound that you can instantly imagine yourself humming along to. Accessible pop values are used to great effect, his elegant but candid delivery takes the material straight to the heart. 12 total tracks. Brightside Recordings. 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Purchasing.......2006-08-08

I'm a Blue fan from way back, but objectively, I have to say Lee Ryan's album is well worth the money.

My decision to buy this album began as Blue fan obligation, but when I heard the singles, I could not click order soon enough. The track 'Turn Your Car Around' had me hooked, while 'Army of Lovers' was nice, it wasn't stand out. That's where 'Turn Your Car Around' blows you away. There's no denying Ryan has the vocals to pull off some beautiful ballads, the only reason this review was dragged to a 4* is some songs on the album feel like they just don't need to be there. It left me wishing one or two had been replaced.

Out of the 12 songs, my picks would include:
1. Parking. Definately for me the best song, it's beautiful both in lyrics and in vocals.
2. Turn Your Car Around. As I've said before this song pulls you into the album.
3. Daydreamer. Again a beautiful song which showcases Lee's amazing voice.

Lee Ryan has an incredible voice. I look forward to more albums showcasing his talent.

2 out of 5 stars OK, nothing special.......2006-04-06

I love Blue, and when I heard that Lee was making a solo CD I decided to check it out. This CD is just a collection of bland pop songs. I love his voice, and I was anticipating some powerful ballads, but instead this CD consisted of soft rock songs mixed with some weak ballads. I liked the song "When I Think of You", giving a soulful performance, and "In the Morning", a nice soft sound. However, everything else dissapointed me. However, good news is this CD is better than Simon Webbe's CD, which is pure[...].

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, some brilliant tracks.......2006-01-29

Lee achieved something great - he was the first member of Blue to release an entire solo album. Not the first to release a single, Duncan did this in 2004, but Lee was the first to have an entire album out.

And it's a solid effort. For the most part, the album is good, but there are times where all the songs sound the same and it all seems to blend together. But there are other moments where amazingly strong songs just stand out and yell for attention. You alternate between these moments throughout the album.

Lee's solo material is a lot different to his time in Blue, the music is a lot more guitar influenced and there's a few more ballads then Blue did, but sometimes this isn't a bad thing. This is shown in the album's outstanding track "How Do I." This song is utterly beautiful. Everything about it takes my breath away - the music, the lyrics and Lee's vocals. I always thought he was a bit of screamer in Blue, but on this song it works. This is a gorgeous track and the album's best track. Other amazing tracks include "Parking" (another gorgeous ballad with amazing lyrics), "Army Of Lovers" (Lee's debut single, a short and sweet midtempo track), "Turn Your Car Around" (the second single, a upbeat guitar track with brilliant vocals) and "Daydreamer" (a midtempo track with fantastic music at the beginning).

Overall, not a bad effort from Mr Ryan, who was certainly brave being the first Blue member to branch out into a solo album. I will continue to support him, as I will do with all the solo Blue members. Release the tracks I listed above Lee and you will do well!

4 out of 5 stars Great Debut.......2005-12-09

Well, first I heard the first single "Army Of Lovers" and it seemed to me like a very good song. Something different from the music he did with Blue (more guitar style) and much much better (I didn't like Blue's music). And then I got the album and I must admit that I was surprised. This album ain't bad... at all.
My fav songs on the album and really really great tracks are: Army Of Lovers (very romantic song "I'm yours and you are mine... you complete my life..."), Turn Your Car Around (pefect second single; also guitar), Wish The Whole World Knew (hope this will be a single... very nice mid tempo song), How Do I (beautiful ballad - hope to see it as a next single), and Parking.
These songs rate: 5
Whole Album rate: 4

5 out of 5 stars Great debut album for Lee Ryan.......2005-10-24

Long awaited solo album does not disappoint. This album covers most genres of music from the catchy first track "Army of Lovers" through to the poignant self penned "In the Morning". Soul lovers are catered to with "Real Love" whilst jazz aficionados should enjoy "Miss My Everything".

Favourite track is the hauntingly beautiful "How do I?", yet another song written by Lee. The remaining tracks are excellent especially the country style "Turn your car around".

One of the most talented singer/songwriters to come out of England for the longest time. A voice of an Angel.

An album to listen to at any time and place.

5 out of 5 stars God Bless America!.......2006-07-27

I listened with at least moist eyes - and often streaming tears - to this stunning collection as I enjoyed a scenic ride on Amtrak from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR. I could not help but be proud and grateful for our most honorable country and the dedication and sacrifice of the people who volunteer to protect and defend her. I bought 15 copies and gave them to my friends and family. I intend to give copies to my best clients. Needless to say, I commend A Hero for Today to all.

4 out of 5 stars Hero For Today.......2006-07-05

I heard the title song first at the memorial marker ceramony for Paul R. Smith, the first Medal of Honor recipient of the WOT. I went searching for a CD and to my surprise, found it as the title.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I have found the tone quality very good. My only 'complaint' is the lack of printed lyrics.

While I'm not usually a huge fan of military music, I found the lyrics time appropriate for occassional use in my social studies classes. While we have many discussions about the US policies, many of us can use a reminder of those few that are giving up so much for the many.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome!.......2005-08-15

I bought the CD for my mom who LOVES "We Were There". The 3rd infantry performs a great rendition of it during their concert series every year on the Ellipse in Washington D.C. which includes soldiers wearing the uniforms of the Army as they have evolved and a very stirring speech. Since the 3rd infantry is unable to sell recordings to the public, being able to at least get the song feor my mom was a wonderful present. The other music on the CD was also wonderfully patriotic and beautifully performed.

3 out of 5 stars More Patriotic Dribble!.......2005-08-06

Another re-hash of Altissimo! recordings here. Once again recordings have been drawn together from the US Army Band Library which means the sound quality is often un-even, and nothing is original here.

The standard US Armed Forces Medley Altissimo! just uses from one CD to the next. I don't think they ever change the band playing it! So no mention of when these recordings were made either, or who was directing the Army band when they were done. Altissimo! has not reached that level of professionalism that other labels attained long ago.

Most of the patriotic material here has been issued before by Altissimo! There is very little new material on this CD. The redundant program presented here is a common feature with most US service bands. The musicianship is first-rate: The music they play often second or third rate! These bands can do a lot more than play this kind of dribble. Of course Altissimo! thinks that only the popular stuff will sell. And so they market the same thing over and over.

The picture on the front with the US soldier in desert tans is intended to pull in the patriotic buyer today. The funny thing here is that the recordings combined here were probably in the can pre-9/11! Buyer beware!

4 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2004-05-24

"Hero for Today" is a wonderfully balanced collection from the US Army Band and Chorus. There was a good selection of patriotic music, both old and new. The balance within the chorus was well executed, as was the balance between the band and the chorus. Their rendition of "Hymn to the Fallen" was thoughtful, almost prayerful, with a subtle choral overtone. The "Battle Hymn of the Republic" was a fresh and full arrangement of an old favorite. "Here's to America" was an upbeat expression of faith in America, in good contrast to the reflective "A Hero For Today." "This Is My Country" was set with a majestic tone, while "God Bless America" was an upbeat expression of an old favorite. I'd recommend this CD to anyone who would like to hear both traditional and new expressions of patriotic music.

This CD is incredible! It is music which can appeal to all kinds of audiences ranging from the general public to the most sophisticated. Howard Buss has got to be one of the most innovative composers of classical music alive today. This music is inspired, as are the performances. The composition which lends its name to the title of the CD, "Modern Times" is a masterwork. Gerald Reynolds' rich baritone voice is perfect for the role, and Kim McCormick's wizardry on the flute is phenomenal.

This CD was recorded in the acoustically stunning chapel of the Saint Paul Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It features motets, Gregorian chants, and spiritual songs which extol the virtues of various creatures of flight, highlighted by several works from Spanish Renaissance composer Francisco Guerrero. This recording demonstrates the ensemble's ability to sing as individual soloists as well as a splendidly blended choir. Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque vocal music is featured on this disc, including two of the most beautiful spiritual songs by the famous 12th-century nun, Hildegard von Bingen.

Following on from the first single "Army of Lovers" this is yet another great song from Lee's debut album. In additional to Lee's vocal range on "Moving On", the musical arrangement is superb.

If for some reason and I can't see why, you don't like the music on this single, then buy it just for the lyrics of "These words". Not only is this talented young man a fine singer, he is also an excellent poet and lyricist.

The name Jan Koetsier is familiar to many performers, teachers, and students of the tuba. This is due primarily to the popularity of three compositions, which are frequently performed in recitals and have been included in the repertoire for numerous competitions. However, for many this is where their knowledge of Koetsier's tuba works ends. Thankfully, he was inspired to compose five additional works that feature the tuba in a solo capacity. Though a few of these works have previously been recorded, this is the first recording to include all of his solo tuba works. This eclectic recording showcases all seven of Koetsier's tuneful and sometimes quirky works, performed by tubist Mike Forbes.
