Product Description
With its complexity and instrumental richness, its ability to develop anguishing themes and electric rises and its overgrowing tension, SHYLOCK has often been compared to KING CRIMSON. Actually, this instrumental combo also belongs to wild and intricate Progressive rock with tormenting atmospheres, but has its own personality. The latter is expressed through overwhelming lyricism and refined romanticism, a bit like PULSAR. With its schizoido-electronic dimension, SHYLOCK can also make you think of HELDON. What’s more, each musician is a real virtuoso, especially guitarist Frédéric L’EPEE and outstanding drummer André FISICHELLA. As "Gialorgues" (1975) can be considered as a very good debut album, "Ile de Fièvre" (1979) is widely known as an absolute masterpiece. Definite talent !

5 out of 5 stars Much more to this album than just the title track.......2007-06-05

Shylock was a French band that managed two albums in the late '70s on the CBS label, 1977's Gialorges, and this one, from 1978, Ile de Fievre. The group consisted of guitarist Fredric L'Epee, drummer Andre Fischella, keyboardist Didier Lustig, and bassist Serge Summa. The album's reputation tends to rest on the title track and there's a good reason for it, it's truly a mindblowing piece of progressive rock with lots of nice synth and guitar work. Didier Lustig really whips out the Elka Rhapsody, Minimoog, and even the Mellotron on this piece (he also uses the Yamaha CP-70 electric grand piano, Hammond organ, and Hohner clavinet on this album). But aside from this piece, many regard the rest of the album as a disappointment. I don't see that myself. To me, the King Crimson influences are much higher on much of the rest of the album, with a more angular approach than the title track. For example, "Le Sange des Capucines" shows the Crimson influence with a strong fusion feel, no doubt Andre Fischella's drumming was influenced by the fusion greats. "Choral", as you might guess, is a choral experiment with odd voices and Mellotron (if those were tron choir sounds, they aren't your standard-issued tron choir tapes being used). "Himogene" is a nice little funky piece where Didier Lustig whips out the clavinet while "Loacksetal" finds the band back in Crimson territory with some nice Mellotron and strange synth effects (that sound like it was produced off an EMS synth).

I think people get put off by the rest of the album since the killer title track does not represent what the rest of the album is like, but regardless, the rest is full of great material too, and worth getting.
