As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Moving and beautiful CD.......2002-11-09

I was lucky enough to sing in the St. James Cathedral Choir the year we recorded this CD. While they were often demanding recording sessions, the music is still some that I've never heard done better. The Biebl "Ave Maria" (track 11), with Howard's tenor solo can still move me to tears with it's soul-wrenching beauty, and the Bruckner "Agnus Dei" (track 8) is divine (just to name my favorites). While the choir has an amazing blend, it did not end up a homogeniged sound like many other large choirs. The listener really gets to hear the minute details of the music and dynamics that make this music a spiritual epihany.

Glorious Music.......2002-07-02

This is a stunning musical treat. The music is beautiful and varied. The Biebl 'Ave Maria', alone, is worth the CD. Highly recommended for choral and pipe organ lovers.

The song is amazing. Great track....but this is not the right version. This is the standard run thin jewel case, not the limited edition. it only has three tracks. BOO! i ordered this the day they put it up for sale here back in March-ish...it ook forever. and it was the wrong one. AND they wouldnt take it back cuz i unwrapped it not knowing it was the wrong version. AND the case was cracked. FUG you amazon.

Meh, it could have been better.......2003-09-09

I just recieved my cd, and I wasn't at all disappointed. I already knew that the last two tracks weren't actually on the CD. So, I already knew what was coming. Anyways, here is how I rate the songs:1. Funeral Of Hearts (Radio Edit), Basically about the same as the Album version. A slow, soft, melody, with some pretty good lyrics, which gets a bit harder in parts as the song goes on. Pretty romantic song, similar to Close To The Flame in my view.2. Funeral Of Hearts (Album Version), "Read above post"3. Funeral Of Hearts (Acoustic Version), I actually think this may be better than the Album version. I tend to learn towards acoustics in most HIM songs, and I'm not sure why. So, unless you have no other HIM CDs to add to your collection, I would leave this one for awhile.

The Biggest Disappointment.......2003-05-16

Don't order this cd if you are just wanting the video and extra song. The acoustic by Valo isn't even that great and I consider myself a true H.I.M. fan. The CD is not terrible...It's just alright.

Album Description

Love's Goddess Sure was Blind, written in exuberant and florid style for the birthday of the much loved young Queen Mary ends, extraordinarily, with a reflection on the grief her eventual death would provoke. It was less than six years later that the prophesied mourning became a reality, when, in her early thirties, she succumbed to smallpox.

Purcell's eloquent compositions for her funeral are acknowledged as some of his most powerful masterpieces marrying a genuine of expression of grief (Purcell greatly admired the witty, musical Mary) with a characteristic sophistication of style.

I like how this single actually gives us views on the song that we've never heard before. The Dr. Dragon mix is kinda weird but it's one of those songs no matter what you'll play. I love the acoustic version of the song and the origninal version is great too. Also check out the new version of Soul on Fire it's pretty good.

The guy below me has no idea what he's talking about. Enhanced is a fancy way of saying if you put this disc into your computer, stuff will come up. This single has some nice tracks on it, excluding the radio edit, which you should just skip. Now for the fancy track reviews:

The Funeral Of Hearts (Radio Edit): There isn't much need for an explination here, it's a crappy version of the original song. Like I said earlier, skip it.

The Funeral Of Hearts (Acoustic): It was really nice to hear an acoustic version of this song. It has a nice and simple sound to it. I love hearing songs stripped down to the bone, if you don't, at least give it a chance.

The Funeral Of Hearts (Dr. Dragons Dub): Very cool intro. After that, it sounds kind of like a club mix. I see it as one of those love/hate songs at first. But it grows on you gradually.

Soul On Fire (Erich Zann's Supernatural Remix): It's not to different musically, but it's arranged very unlike the original. You skip the opening riff, and go straight into the first verse. The last line of the first verse is also skipped, and replaced by a drum intro that leads into the main riff. Then the chorus is skipped for the second verse. Then comes some odd synth stuff, and the chorus finally comes into play. Only downfall is the fact that they left out the bridge part altogether. But it's still not a bad listen, although it's not nearly as good as the original.
