Product Description
2003 Japanese 24-bit remastered reissue of the singer/songwriters 3rd and final album from 1973. Once again a one-man-band affair, it does differ, however, from his earlier efforts. The record has a much more wistful, almost Harry Nilsson-like feeling. Em

        5 out of 5 stars A True Recording Artist.......2007-02-28

In the original LP gatefold jacket, Rhodes discussed how he did not choose to mask his musical weaknesses (although none were evident) by having other musicians play on the album. Every note written, played or sung on his three solo albums was performed by Rhodes. This album was completed while Rhodes was being sued by his record label (ABC/Dunhill) for not completing his contractual obligations in a timely manner. The label did this with less popular performers to recoup some of their investment. They also sued the more popular performers to negotiate extending their contract (i.e. re-sign and the law suit goes away). I digress! While Rhodes purposely shrugged the Beatlesque harmonies, this is by far his best recording. The use of instruments far exceeds the first two albums, as witnessed by the closely-miked strumming of the piano strings with a guitar pick on the title song. While it produced a sound akin to a harp, the flat-clicking of the pick adds to the effect. The album title was Rhodes' admission that he would likely not record again, so I believe he poured his heart and soul into recording his best musical effort. Hopefully, this album will be reissued on a more affordable release. In the meantime, I still have two vinyl copies (one near mint) to enjoy until it is reissued on CD or DVD.

        5 out of 5 stars I Agree with Phyllis.......2006-08-21

I also think this is Emmit's best work. His debut and MIRROR were great, but as an ALBUM this is record is much more carefully crafted than its predecessors; the song transitions are breathtaking and the production work is clearly his best. Just as emotional as his first two if not more so. I've come to the conclusion that many people think his debut was his best just because so few have ever really heard his next two from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd... wonder where mine is........2006-07-18

On June 2nd I ordered this title, which Amazon was offering at the time for $30. Anytime you see those low Amazon prices with the "usually ships in 4 - 6 weeks" (or anything over 24 hours), don't believe it. They really mean "It's just possible we can get our hands on this, but in the meantime at least we'll keep you from ordering it elsewhere and tie up your money just in case we come up with it." Ever wonder why Amazon is so gung ho to rate the merchants and customers, but doesn't allow itself to be rated? I don't think they'd come out looking too great. (Fortunately I managed to obtain this wonderful Emitt Rhodes cd elsewhere.)

3 out of 5 stars Not his best work, but still worth having.......2006-01-03

I remember in 74 looking through some albums for something new, when lo and behold here was a Emitt Rhodes album I didnt even know existed. It had been quite awhile since I had bought ''MIRROR'and I had missed hearing something new from him.Estatic I hurriedly put it on the turntable and heard the opening piano part for Warm self sacrifice, starting off slowly then going into a rock and roll style and felt it was like his last two albums. But after awhile I realized he had changed his style somewhat and after a few plays
I have to admit I was quite disappointed. However realizing that his record company was trying to squeeze everything out of him at once, its no wonder that this album wasnt as good as it should have been.Badfinger went through the same ordeal which basically destroyed them.Luckily Emitt didnt try to take his life like two of the members of that group did.Never the less, some thirty one years after buying this album there are some songs that I really like and some that are not so good.My two favorite songs are,the georgous ''Only lovers decide'' and the title track''Farewell to paradise''.The other good ones are''Warm self sacrifice'',See no evil'',''Drawn to you'',''Blue horizon''and ''Trust once more''.Im not too crazy about ''Shoot the moon'',''Nights are lonely'',''Bad man'',and ''In desperate need'', so I only give this album three stars.Still I think its worth having just for the good songs.

        5 out of 5 stars Incomparable.......2004-08-31

While it's true that he never duplicated the consistency of his 1970 masterpiece "Emitt Rhodes" (being sued by your own record comapny while you're working on your new album will have that effect!), Farewell to Paradise contains some of the most beautiful songs Emitt Rhodes ever recorded. The title track which ends the album is as near perfection as you'll find in pop/rock - gorgeous guitar hook, soaring verse & chorus, perfect middle 8, with his as-usual stunning bass & percussion. There are a number of tracks on this record which fall far below the standard he set with his best work - some are downright maudlin - but Warm Self Sacrifice, Blue Horizon, Trust Once More, and Only Lovers Decide, along with the title track, make this an essential album. Do the world a favor - pass the word about the incomparable Emitt Rhodes: his songwriting, sweet & soulful singing, masterful musicianship, and amazing production make him as rare in the world of recorded music as a .400 hitter in baseball.
        Emitt we miss you!
