Buy the 1st two albums.......2006-08-06

I love the bands early hits from the first two albums: Child is father to the Man (1st album) and Blood Sweat and Tears (2nd album). All the tracks on this compilation are from the first 5 albums, however, I think only the really good hits are really from the 1st two albums, and like another reviewer said, THESE ARE NOT THE FULL LENGTH SONGS! The CD is only flippin' 48 minutes for crying out loud! They could of at least put the real versions on it to fill it up, or put on more songs. I don't understand compilations like this. So if your looking where to start collecting from this jazz/rock/psychedelic/blues based band, start with the first two albums, you'll be a heck of a lot happier.

The best sounding release of this classic greatest hits comp.......2006-08-03

This is an excellent sounding reissue of a classic LP and this CD is worth buying for either diehards or the casual fans: The original LP is all mono using the 45 versions, and while there were very early CDs that used the LP master, but the stereo collector community complained so Columbia remastered the disc to use the stereo LP versions to please the stereo oriented collectors in a hurry. In 1999, the Greatest Hits LP was reissued again on CD, this time using the 45 versions in stereo that came from the promo 45 stereo single masters and this release became the first time the 45 versions ended up available in stereo for wide release. So collectors, audiophiles and casual fans should buy this CD. If you want a greatest hits collection with the LP versions, buy the "What Goes Up?" 2 CD set or track down one of the 1980s CDs of this compilation that use the LP versions.

Beautiful, Beautiful Music! Great Remastering Job too!.......2005-08-20

To think that this cd basically landed on my lap as an accidental gift the details of which I'll spare you all; otherwise, I'd never have had the opportunity to listen to BS&T!

I don't have the whole albums but judging this particular cd on its own merits, I'd say that this is definitely a keeper! The remastering was very well done and the sound quality is very, very good. I liked this so much that I chose the first track to be the opening track for my wedding reception cd that I compiled 3 years ago.

Although the tracks are arrangements of other people's work unlike Chicago which uses its own material, I'm not too bothered about that so long as the arrangements are either better than the original or put a whole new artistic twist on them. Both cases are true here in this great compilation album.

With the resurgence of Michael Buble and the swing time music these days, maybe it's time B,S & T got some more airtime as well? No dud tracks here at all and I'm glad that fortune smiled on me a few years back and dropped this cd on my lap.

Wanna get one cd that's representative of the band? You can't go wrong with this! It's made me so very happy for some time now.

Greatest Hits, but not the Greatest Cuts from the Albums.......2005-07-01

BS&T was one of the finest jazz/rock bands. Personally, I like them better than Chicago (although I am quite fond of them as well).

The selections on this CD are fine if you want only the Top 40 versions rather than the definitive album versions. "Spinning Wheel" for example, fades out just as the end instrumentals start to get interesting.

Although this is a good choice for those seeking an inexpensive introduction to the group, I would recommend the albums. Virtually all of the tracks on the albums (especially "The Child is Father to the Man" and the self-titled "Blood, Sweat & Tears") are excellent and the mastering is (in my opinion) much better.

They Don't Make Songs Like This AnyMore.......2004-11-19

It was a much happier time--the carefree days of the 70's. I was in my mid teens, and although born in Spain, had moved to live in the US, with relatives in New York. 45's were the CD's of today, and I bought my first Blood Sweat & Tears record. It was a new experience for me. This amazing rock group with the most incredibly soulful lead singer I've ever heard. So much passion in his vocals. And one amazing song after another- too many to name. I now have the CD version of the album I still have to this day. They will never be forgotten. They remain one of the most influential soul,rock and pop groups.

A cult band with immortal creative breadth!.......2006-12-05

Many times you must feel the impression that the music produced by everlasting bands will stand forever, due it doesn't' t age a bit and as the good wine improves throughout the times.

Blood sweat and tears was one these bands anointed by that special ability to conquer your spirit and mood. Music that simply mocks about the small hands of the time and the conventionalism of the fashion.

What else may I add? . Acquire this album due it's part of the vertiginous sixties.

For me this was a real rediscovery, because I wasn't really listening to B, S & T back then, although I certainly recognised their major hit "Spinning Wheel", which is included in this absolutely wonderful album.
Starting of with French composer Eric Satie's "Gymnopédies", first introduced very much as written from the composers hand, but then `twisted' in a nice and imaginary way, with some great writing for horns, and I guess this is the key point to this album; they take other peoples compositions and turn them into their own, in a very personal and imaginary way. I would actually go so far as to say that they beat the originals, but of course this is a matter of taste.
To me there is no doubt; this is their finest moment, the most inspiring and soulful outlet of them all. This is also the first album with singer David Clayton-Thomas and what a singer. I think this is a great album the way through and what an eye-opener it must have been, completely new and fresh, and the best thing is; it still sounds fresh. The only little thing that I can criticize is the second last track called Blues-part 2. Is has a great and very interesting organ intro, which builds up to a climax where horns finally enter, but then right away cuts into a drum/bass groove, which is a bit of an anticlimax, and the rest of this song is virtually different ideas spliced together, contra a homogeneous composition. (this is one out of three compositions of their own hand, the other two being "Spinning Wheel" and "Sometimes in Winter"). But that cannot take anything away from this album as a whole, which is just full of great songs arranged in such an irresistible way. Check this out!!!

Another end-of-the-sixties classic.......2006-07-09

A person listening to this album for the first time might wonder if it was mispackaged - as it starts off with a minute or so of a flute-based version of "Variations on a Theme..." with no indication of the rich and thick sound to unfold in in about 90 seconds, then - bam! - you're there.

BS&T as a group shares some of the same elements as another end-of-the sixties classic album, Chicago Transit Authority, by having a large number of band members, with a horn section and bluesy, jazzy rich sound. However, the sum of the parts produces a different outcome for each band.

There some covers on this album ("Smiling Phases", "God Bless The Child", "And When I Die", "You've Made Me So Very Happy") and I believe they surpass the originals in every case.

I like "More and More" a lot, so the extra track of it is indeed a bonus. However, the expanded "Smiling Phases" is no match for the shorter version, though it's still interesting on its own.

This album is the second from the band, after kicking out founder Al Kooper and replacing him with David Clayton-Thomas who has a deeper richer sound.

It's an indispensible representation of the end of the sixties, but you also have to get the first BS&T album, "Child Is Father To The Man", which has a different slant and is no less impressive.

A slight comedown from the debut but still very good.......2006-07-07

This album marked a transition for the horn infused rock band as the members gave the sack to founding member Al Kooper and with that took the band's sound away from the more bluesy tone of CHILD IS FATHER OF THE MAN and replaced that with a jazz feel. Clearly this was the correct move commercially as Kooper's replacement, raspy full-throated David Clayton-Thomas, led the charge to the pop charts landing them 3 solid hits from the album in "Spinning Wheel", Brenda Holloway cover "You've Made Me So Very Happy" and Laura Nyro's "And When I Die".

HIGHLIGHTS:
The opener from the band is "Variations on a Theme", a feather light adaptation of the 1st movement of Erik Satie's pastoral "Trois Gymnopedies" giving way to the phase-shifting blustery charging brass of the 2nd movement and nicely preparing you for the cover of Traffic's "Smiling Phases". Another reviewer rightly pegged "And When I Die" as the finest moment here and they're correct as the band incorporates elements of country, jazz, blues, and a touch of showtunes into a seamless whole that's more than the sum of its parts. Every transition feels natural. "Spinning Wheel" is a psych-tinged jazz-rock classic, playfully spinning children's tune "Have You Ever Seen a Lassie?" into its coda even as the carousel slowly breaks down into the denouement. Great stuff.

LOWS:
"Smiling Phases" is great in the neat, compact version heard as track 2. The live cut is a different story as the band attempts to show you their "chops" and instead careens wildly to and fro, losing all track of the melody in the process. This band was at its best when its jazziness was an inflection rather than attempts at improvisation and the bloat there only proves this is the case. Sprawl is also the problem with "Blues, Pt. 2" which only recovers about halfway through when vocalist Clayton-Thomas enters the picture but by then it's too late. Had this not been a letdown, the reprise of "Variations" might prove a masterstroke but it feels a bit anticlimactic to me in this context.

BOTTOM LINE:
Still better than your average rock album. Worth owning and definitely one of their better efforts but I'd pick up CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN (ASIN B00004XSVL) first as it holds together better as a complete album and is an underrated treasure of the 60s.

Blood, Sweat & Tears was the total brainchild of Al Kooper. He made one classic LP with them, then left/was pushed out, they hire a singer and BOOM, they explode commercially. Talk about irony. Unlike many, though, I don't put down the Clayton-Thomas version of the band. In fact, I think that the self-titled LP was a classic of a sort. The material (all covers, right?) was well-chosen, the arrangements were tight and imaginative, the production was incredible, and Clayton-Thomas did a great job. It only lasted one album, but it was a great album.

But this is the real McCoy. A groundbreaking stunner. Had it not been for Kooper's vision, that second BS&T album could never have happened. This was the child that was father to the man. Though it has escaped grandiose status for almost 40 years, it is a stone cold classic.

B.S.& T. is Only Good with Al Kooper.......2006-11-06

This is an exceptional album.....not your typical Blood, Sweat and Tears commercialized garbage that was created after this album. This was their first album, raw and orginal, not over-produced or watered down for a top 40 audience. It is, in fact, the band driven and led by the great rock and blues musician, Al Kooper. When B. S. & T. "lost" Al Kooper, they lost everything.....fortunately, we can find what they lost in this album.

The Masterpiece.......2006-07-23

This album doesn't have any of Blood Sweat and Tears hits. However, it is the band's best album, at least from a conceptual sense. Even though every song is completely different from the last, it somehow feels like a smooth transition to go from one song to the next. This album also represents the original lineup of Blood Sweat and Tears, including the creator keyboardist (and on this album, vocalist), Al Kooper. Kooper had actually formed this band because of creative issues with Danny Kalb, the leader of another great band, the Blues Project. Kooper's experience in the Blues Project can be seen on this album, as there is still a great deal of blues infused into even the classical and r&b numbers. Some notable tracks that I especially enjoyed on this album include "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," "Overture," and the haunting but beautiful, "World Without Love."

Al Kooper COULD Be President of General Motors..........2006-05-23

Considering the shape they're in today, it could be a big improvement.

This was, of course, a huge sleeper in its day. Unlike the later Clayton-Thomas BST album, this one produced no "Top Ten" played hits. However, as a concept album it was great, and as one which paved the way for white-boy blues, it was something really new.

We loved them more than they'd ever know...and hey, look closely at the album cover. Take it from me - this was WAY before Photoshop.

This is one of everlasting memoris of Blood, Sweat & Tears! I think it expressed the music of the early and later '70's; Seeing I was NOT a Teenager in the '70's I was quite thrilles to find this Album here on the Eve of 2002! In the 70's, please remember this Album and all others were available only on LP! Yes, I have above Album in LP, also a Turntable on which to play same, and a Cassette recorder which I taped same from! This is truly a great work with beautiful harmony by the group and such beautiful medldies! Sorry if some of you did not happen to hear this LP back then. It is one of my favorites and feel fortunate to buy same on CD. Thanks -

This is an excellent album recorded prior to the lead singer leaving the group. This album is true BS&T and the only recording of the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil" covered by BS&T on any album or CD. Great tunes and memories.

A masterpiece ruined by poor remastering.......2005-05-21

I have fond memories of this album from when I was a teenager. I had read the reviews on Amazon that complained of a lousy remastering job, but thought "how bad could it be?". Well... it's bad. It's really bad. The sound is really flat and dull. Now I wish I had purchased the mobile fidelity version for 4 times the price of this piece of crap.

I still think the music is great though. The arrangements and musicianship is top notch.

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.......2004-01-06

While the recording quality of this c.d. is nothing to write
home about, I don't think it sounds anywhere near as bad as
previous reviewers have made it out to be. The volume is lower
than most of my c.d.s, but the brass is bright, voices clear,
and bass acceptable. Also, being that this is the only form this
c.d. is available in right now, I can't see the wisdom in going
without this great music all together! It is well worth the
price. I don't think this was their best release,but it is very
good. If you are familiar with this band, there is nothing else
I can say that you don't already know. If not,they play great
brass rock with good vocals. Average song writing, and a lot
of this release is covers from other bands. However they are
done well,and the originals contained on it are very good.
I'd like to give more, but unfortunately they left out most of the information
with it, only a list of songs. Very annoying!
If you like this band, I would like to recommend that you check
out the band OSIBISA.

Thankfully I found out that none less than the highly esteemed Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab is remastering this neglected classic on their hybrid SACD format. Thank God, I've got sympathy for the devil, but not a horrific sounding reissue.

I logged on hoping that Sony had finally gotten around to reissuing this... no such luck. _Blood Sweat & Tears 3_ is the last of the four major BST albums not to not receive a decent remastering job, and ironically, it's the one that most needed it. Sony's mega-cheapo "Collector Series" reissues were an embarassment when they came out, and are even less excusable today, boasting horrific sound, shrunken cover art, and no liner notes or booklet of any sort. _There's a Riot Going On_ by Sly Stone and _Having a Party with Southside Johnny_ are two other classics that continue to suffer this fate. Wake up, guys!

Blood Sweat & Tears.......2007-07-09

The music sounds better than ever on CD. If you enjoyed them in the 60's, you will really want to add this to your collection.

A refreshing change in the late sixties.......2005-04-02

Brilliant as so much sixties pop and rock music was, Blood Sweat and Tears seemed fresh and exciting with their brand of jazz-rock. Of course, much popular music in the first half of the twentieth century had its roots in jazz, but the jazz influence had all but disappeared from mainstream pop music by the time rock'n'roll took over in the mid-fifties. Blood Sweat and Tears showed that records featuring prominent trumpets and saxophones could sell in huge quantities to pop and rock fans.

The group had three major American hits, all of which came from their second album and all of which peaked at number two - You've made me so very happy (written and first recorded by Brenda Holloway, a much under-rated Motown singer), Spinning wheel and And when I die. While these three songs were major hits in many countries around the world, they conspicuously failed to make much impact in Britain, where one of them (You've made me so very happy) was a minor hit and the other two failed to chart. Still, their music is readily available in Britain so their UK popularity is better than the charts might suggest.

This compilation contains those three classics as well as other great songs such as Lucretia Mac Evil, Hi de ho, Go down gambling (all hits in America) and their cover of Got to get you into my file (written by Paul McCartney for Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, who had a UK top ten hit with it - the Beatles included their own version on their album, Revolver).

This is not the ultimate Blood Sweat and Tears compilation - there are some notable omissions such as I can't quit her - but it serves as a good introduction to their music.

Better than Columbia's main release.......2000-11-14

I like the Definitive collection's track listing a little better than the main "What Goes Up" compilation. It adds a couple tracks from the album More Than Ever, and includes some of the other Jerry Fisher material. I recommend this disc. Good price too.

Likely the best BS&T ever..........2007-01-05

While I love music, I don't get into the shinnanegans that go on behind the scenes. I don't know, or care, that band members are prima donnas, or are publicly ignored and don't care who comes or goes. I don't care how music is defined; labeling it jazz, country, rock, or bohemian chamber funk means little to me. All I care about is good music. What defines 'good music' to me is anything that is fresh, inventive, and sticks to your ribs.

I liked the popular stuff that Blood, Sweat, & Tears created early on; Spinning Wheel, God Bless the Child, and Lucrecia McEvil all were hits in my book and I still enjoy them today. But what has to be my absolute favorite album of all time has to be New Blood. I don't mean my favorite B,S&T album, I mean of ANY album.

While each tune on New Blood can stand on its own, it is the whole album and how each tune fits that makes this bit of B,S&T magic shine.

Starting off with a funky, humorous 'Down in the Flood', you hear guitar, horn and harmonica work that is unsurpassed, and you know you if the rest of the album is this good you've got something real.

'Touch Me' did just that with powerful vocals and anthem-like horns, then some jazzy-funky introspection with 'Alone' is a treat for anyone who likes good solo preformances.

"Velvet' seems like an odd duck in the lineup, this ballard about a horse is down-tempo and has a haunting quality that almost seems out of place in the album, but it does work as a setup for 'I Can't Move No Mountains', which is up tempo with flashy horns and jazzy rythyms.

'Over the Hill' resets the mood with humor and funk, and 'So Long Dixie' gets things moving again with strong vocals.

The crown jewels of the New Blood, however, is the final two cuts; 'Snow Queen' and 'Maiden Voyage'.

Both tracks offers up some of the finest instrumentals ever.

I'm sure there are those who won't find 'New Blood' to thier liking, but if you appreciate 'good music' New Blood does not disappoint.

The best BS&T album.......2006-08-18

This is the best BS&T album, in a musical sense, although certainly the least known and appreciated. The earlier Al Kooper albums certainly pushed the boundaries of rock and jazz, and produced some really memorable songs. Taken as a whole, however, the Kooper-era albums sound dated and self-absorbed. In contrast, all of the Clayton-Thomas albums were blatant attempts to throw a bunch of potential pop hits at the wall, and see how many would stick. 'Spinning Wheel' actually gives me flatulence, so if you prefer the 'pop' era of BS&T, this is not the album for you.
Instead, 'New Blood' was the ultimate realization of the band's musical vision: not just a horn section but a horn BAND, one that stands at the opposite end of the balance beam from 'Chicago', on the jazzy/funky end of the scale rather than rock. During one of his pissy stages (he wanted 50%), Clayton-Thomas left the band and was replaced with vocalist Jerry Fisher. Fisher as a singer blows away any of Clayton-Thomas's work, but is a far-superior component of a unified musical structure. (After this, BS&T seemed more like Clayton-Thomas's back-up band). 'New Blood' is the only album on which you can hear the BAND.
Every cut on this album is a real treat, but only one made the 'Best of' compilation ('So Long Dixie'). Most of you BS&T fans have the compilation album, so go back and listen to that track, and if you like it, find a new world where BS&T made the music, not the Billboard critics.

New Blood, indeed!.......2006-07-02

First off, don't buy this if you're looking for the BS&T of "Spinning Wheel" reknown. But DO buy this if you want to hear some great music, great playing, and great arrangements. After BS&T 4, the band and David Clayton-Thomas parted ways. Enter Jerry Fisher, the new lead singer. There had always been a couple of "factions" within the band, the "Rockers" (basically the rhythm section) and the "Jazzers" (the horn section). And with each of the previous 3 albums, there was always pressure to come up with tunes that would highlight Clayton-Thomas' vocals for the next "hit". Now with a new lead singer, as well as a new guitarist, keyboardist, and saxophonist, the band decides to make an album that THEY enjoy recording. And the "Jazzers" seemed to exert more control over this project, although one would still be hardpressed to call it a "jazz album".

Unfortunately for BS&T, the record-buying public wasn't ready to accept a BS&T without the Clayton-Thomas "sound". Jerry Fisher was certainly a fine vocalist and a lot easier to work with than Clayton-Thomas, but as you will hear, the band certainly took a different direction on "New Blood". More soloing (David Bargeron really gets to shine on 2 numbers, as well as he should!) and the new guitarist Georg Wadenius gets to stretch out on Hancock's "Maiden Voyage". But there are other numbers certainly designed for radio airplay for the masses, with compositions by Bob Dylan and Carole King among them.

The playing is first-rate on this album. But to try and compare THIS band with the band on "Spinning Wheel" would be the same as comparing any of it with the band on "Child Is Father To The Man". Lot of the "core" players are still there (Colomby, Katz, Fielder, etc) but with the newer players it stands to reason that musical sensibilities would change. And this album marked the start of major personnel changes over the next few years that would change the musical landscape of this band until it very little resembled the BS&T of it's heyday. By the time "No Sweat" came out (Another EXCELLENT album BTW), Katz and Winfield had left and others had 1 foot out the door.

But the good news is, this is a solid effort by a band filled with actual musicians playing actual music THEY wanted to play. This would be a great addition to your CD collection.

A good start for the next era of the group.......2005-09-19

This was a good start to a new era in the group's history. Fisher is a strong vocal, equal in power to Clayton-Thomas with as strong a blues influence without the affectations.

The material is strong save for one throwaway song, which would be "Velvet". The group personnel were stronger for the additions of the ingenious and talented Georg Wadenius. Larry Willis is another important addition since he gave them a keyboard player with much stronger sensibilities while still able to handle the rock material, a much stronger player than either Halligan or Fred Lipsius, who occasionally would take the piano solo's on the previous recordings. They lend a completely different aesthetic to the group sound. The group had one of several new focal points

"Snow Queen", "Down in the Flood", "Alone", "Maiden Voyage" and "Over the Hill" are real high points. The group also introduces a vocal chorus in this recording consisting of group members via Fisher, Wadenius, Katz and Willis. Lew Soloff, Jim Fielder, Bobby Colomby, Chuck Winfield and Steve Katz are left over from the edition of the band that had so much commercial and critical success.

This is a good start in a different direction. Not as strong as "No Sweat" which had a stronger personnel line up and had the advantage of having the line-up refine itself, but a very good recording.

This edition of the group seems to more gracefully combine the seemingly disparate influence of jazz and rock.

The ensemble passages are strong and the group incorporates the guitar sound into the ensemble passage in a different way. Wadenius' guitar is included in the voicing in a more linear way than in the more conventional way that they had in the past. By that I mean that Steve Katz had been largely in the background much more rhythmically based with the occasional solo line. Wadenius role is much more integral to the group sound. Again, this is refined further in "No Sweat".

Their rendition of "Maiden Voyage" is spellbinding for it's graceful beauty, Wadenius' unique solo and Larry Willis' accompaniment. It was intriguing the way they seamlessly sequed from "Snow Queen" into "Maiden Voyage" making it seem like it was one piece.

Fisher deserved more credit than he got. It's a shame that this edition of the group didn't get the recognition that it should've gotten.

One of the sad parts of the CD era is how the cover art is diminished by the smaller display, the paper it's processed on, since the cover art is stunning.

For this 1963 concept album, Johnny Cash assumes the voice of the American worker, lending his booming baritone to both traditional and modern folk ballads and blues. "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer" becomes a majestic eight-minute suite that expands upon the original story of the "steel-drivin' man" with powerful dramatic effect. "Another Man Done Gone" receives an eerie a cappella reading with June Carter, while "Casey Jones," the old blues about the engineer, rides along with sprite banjo and background harmonies. Johnny Cash-Blood Sweat and Tears.......2007-06-27

This CD is a re-release of a vinyl disc that I acquired sometime in the early 60s and has been an all time JC classic along with Ring of Fire and Ride this Train. Perhaps not every ones cup of tea, but I consider these discs as the definative Cash.
I have been trying to obtain this CD in the UK for some twelve years; Amazon was my last resort. I now realise that it should have been my first.

Great Johnny Cash cd.......2007-02-21

I owned the LP version of this album many years ago & it was stolen. I was happy to replace with cd. I enjoy it very much especially the efforts to restore quality & extra tunes. I recommend to all Johnny Cash fans.

Another Concept Album!.......2005-10-18

I can't get enough of Johnny Cash's themed albums, and this one is no different. I got it mainly for "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer," an eight-and-a-half minute...story. It's complete with sound effects, crowd noises, and different viewpoints, and tells the tale in a thoroughly unique way. And "Busted" is a very funny song. Most of the others are also about working, quitting work, not wanting to work, having a hard time at work, etc. (Hence the title of "Blood Sweat & Tears")

With 9 tracks, it's not a very long CD, but is definitely worth owning. The songs are all worthy, and he sings them in his own style, doing some very interesting things vocally. It's a great companion to go along with any other Cash Cds you might have. If for nothing else, get it for the picture on the cover. Ha.

Where I'll make a living, the Lord only knows........2005-07-08

This 1963 album by Johnny Cash features songs about "the working man". The single from the album was "Busted", which was a #13 Country hit (Ray Charles later covered it and had a pop hit with it). The other song that everyone remembers is the epic "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer". Both of those songs are great, and so is everything else on the album. Johnny really had an affinity for these kind of songs, and it really shows here. Highly recommended to Johnny Cash fans.

Populist Cash.......2005-05-05

Cash here is recording folk music, mostly tributes to larger than life figures or the troubles of everyday blue-collar workers. This is TRUE populism, not the socialism that masquerades as the voice of the working man these days. Country music got its reputation as "music of the common man" from albums like this.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Choosing a few pearls from a strand like this is hard but the epic "Legend of John Henry's Hammer" is easily one of them. The familiar tale of the giant railroad worker fighting technology with the advent of the automatic steam drill that's equal parts document of the story, drama (with the shouts of "Go John Henry!" from the Carter Family, and spit-in-your-eye defiance (as Johnny sings "I'll die with my hammer in my hand..but I'll be LAUGHIN'"). The lot of the working poor is viewed with humour in a version of Harlan Howard's "Busted". The doomed "Casey Jones" does well in a lively take. "Chain Gang" views the life of a prisoner before the reforms of the modern day ("I dig that ditch/I chop that corn/I curse the day that I was born/I believe that it's better for a man to hang than to work like a dog on a chain gang") "Roughneck" tells the tale of a man who "learned to cuss when he was 2/and fight when I was 3/By the time I was 5 there was no kid alive that could get the best of me". It's a lighter song that helps take the edge off the doom and gloom of much of the songs before it.

LOWS:
The song itself is great...but the sound on the acappella Johnny and Anita Carter duet "Another Man Done Gone" is TERRIBLE. Acres and acres of hiss...

BOTTOM LINE:
While I'm somewhat disappointed with the CD transfer, the music herein is absolutely essential for every Cash fan and every country music fan. Until we can get a better mastering job for this title, this will have to do. My only other quibble is value for the dollar...when albums are as short as this, it could easily have been combined with another similarly themed Cash album as a "2 for 1" disc..."Songs of Our Soil" or "Ride this Train" would have matched up nicely.

No Sweat.......2006-01-29

Possibly the best non David Clayton-Thomas record by BS&T. The band remade themselves after Clayton-Thomas left, and on this record they realized their potential. Fans old and new will recognize it as BS&T, but the rock is harder edged and the jazz is more contemporary with less homage to the big band era and more of a reference to funk. Georg Wadenius (guitar}, "Blue" Lou Marini (woodwinds], and Larry Willis (keyboards) are outstanding and worth the price of the CD.

An underrated marvel of a treasure.... finally released!!!.......2005-09-07

This is one of the most underrated albums in the history of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Finally it was released and I was ecstatic.

Jerry Fisher never got his due. With a voice as powerful as Clayton-Thomas and with as profound a blues influence, Fisher delivers on all the vocal cuts on this recording. Without stance or affectation Fisher delivers the goods.

The personnel in this version of the group is exceptional. Here we have Dave Bargeron, Larry Willis, Georg Wadenius, Tom Malone, Lou Marini, Bobby Colomby, Big Jim Fielder, Jerry Fisher and Lew Soloff. This particular unit melds their varying styles and influences more seamlessly than previous versions of the group.

Georg Wadenius is a remarkable with his unique style on guitar, musical sense and discretion. His vocals and playing definitely helped change the sound of the group toward something new. Years before George Benson, Georg melded vocals with guitar much more elegantly and fluently than Mr. Benson. With Georg it was more the voice as instrument in harmony with his guitar than voice over guitar. Georg can play so many different styles and has a remarkable economy when the piece calls for it. Definitely the best guitarist the band has ever had.

Larry Willis is another one who helped change the sound and tone of things with his modern electric keyboard approach that conjures Herbie Hancock sensibilities (they are both very close in age with similar influences). A strong arranger and marvelous soloist. He can really accompany a soloist well.

Lou Marini Jr. is stronger here than he was in New Blood, playiing tenor and soprano. He shines throughout. Tom Malone is every bit the equal of Lew Soloff on this recording. As powerful and perfect counterpart to Lew who is simply Lew Soloff on this. Those of you who are fans of the group know what I mean. Those of you, who are not, well Lew is a cat who can play anything and can solo with fire and virtuosity.

The choice of songs is eclectic. Some real bluesy rockers, one cover which is an exceptional cover of Traffic's "Empty Pages" which shows off Jerry Fishers power to good advantage. A strong progressive instrumental called "Inner Crisis" which shows off Georg Wadenius' uniqueness to great effect.

The group features some beautiful short instrumentals that segue nicely in both cases to some real rockers.

"Almost Sorry", "Empty Pages", "Back Up Against the Wall", "Inner Crisis", "Save Our Ship" are all real high points in the group's repertoire.

The arrangements are all top flight. The brass section that this group is known for is every bit the match for any version this group has ever had.

The arrangments make use of the new members quite well and without ever being clinical. Everything with the song in mind and in context.

"No Sweat" ranks right up there for me. The virtuosity matches the first two recording. The material is as varied and as interesting.


This one doesn't disappoint.

Tears...of Joy!.......2005-08-24

I have always felt that next to the the first album ("Child Is Father To The Man"), "No Sweat" is the best BS&T album.
Exceptional musicianship (Wadenius, Bargeron & Willis in particular) combined with quality material make this a must have.
This realease sounds wonderful and once again Wounded Bird has done an exceptional job with the sound of this CD.
Highly recommeded !

The best of the Jerry Fisher albums, finally on CD!.......2005-08-02

Thank goodness somebody finally saw the light of day and decided to release some of the later period B,S and T albums on CD! Wounded Bird Records has released no less than five of them, the last few recorded for the Columbia label, and all sound excellent to my ears! True, the band never was able to recapture the success of "You've Made Me So Very Happy" or "Spinning Wheel", but don't discount these albums either, as they all have something interesting to offer musically. They will no doubt make diehard fans of the band rejoice.

Personally, I am finally happy to have the Jerry Fisher era albums on CD. With the exception of New Blood, that was only previously available as a hard to find overseas import, none of these albums were ever available on CD before...and that's a shame. I am a particular fan of Jerry's voice, and always thought that it was a shame that none of his material with B,S and T ever hit it particularly big.

This album, No Sweat, is my favorite out of Jerry's work with the band. There's a really good mix of music on this...from a rocking version of Steve Winwood's Empty Pages...to the mellow and soulful My Old Lady...to the funky instrumental Inner Crisis, featuring a great guitar and voice solo from George Wadenius. Good stuff!

I recommend all of the Wounded Bird reissues whole heartedly! Hopefully somebody down the road will see the potential in releasing the Brand New Day album, thusly insuring B, S and T fans that their entire catalogue will finally find a lasting place in digital history.

The second Best of BST.......2006-11-03

This is a very good CD, if you like the early 70's BST. I bought it for the BST Three portion as that is one of my favorite records. I would not buy BST Four on its own, but with a CD player I can skip through to the best of BST Four.

You'd Better Buy Both Albums Separate(Sound Stinks).......2004-10-26

I bought this two for one in the hopes I would not have to buy both albums on cd.After listening to this import of BS&T 3 and 4 I have no choice because the sound on the so called remaster is horrible.It sounds choppy,scratchy in some places and like the engineer tried to edit every last bit of background noise(but just made things worse).BS&T lovers,avoid this import and just buy both american release albums separately.Just when I thought the Ides Of March (Vehicle) import album sounded bad,this one is in the same league.
