Customer Reviews:
A different Glenn Phillips.......2005-09-16
This is not Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket. This is a different Glenn Phillips (note the 2nd 'N'.) Amazon is confused and is recommending this to TWS fans. I caught the error just before ordering!
The reviews of this guy are pretty good, though. I may check it out anyway...(note that I gave him 5 stars as the benefit of the doubt!)
A visionary............2005-08-29
Glenn Phillips simply has to be heard to be believed, and seeing him live is even better. His latest work carries on the Glenn Phillips tradition of pulling dazzling, heart stopping tricks one after another from a magician's hat, not leaving you time to gasp before racing on to the next incredible riff.
Phillips always works creatively with a group of excellent musicians, and they again provide a razor's edge, taut backing for the guitar explorations.
Phillips can do things on, with, and to a guitar you would not think musically possible.
If you're looking for "Toad the Wet Sprocket" you won't find them here, just one of the most original and creative musician's performing today....
I don't usually sit still and listen to music, but..........2005-04-18
I'm not much of a music fan. I bought this album because I went to high school with Glen (too long ago to admit) and I was curious. I was blown away. I listened to this album over and over. Then I read the jacket, or whatever you call that several page booklet that comes with the CD. Then I listened two more times. I've never heard anything like this. I'm old and conservative. This music is not. But I want to hear more.
Glenn Phillips' most innovative album yet..........2005-01-05
This is Glenn's first release in seven years. The music here is much gentler than what you may be accustomed to but his playing is more innovative than ever. Death is the central theme to this album due to his mother and sister both recently passing away as well as his dad's suicide 30 years ago. There are some wonderful background notes by Glenn on how these tragedies have affected him and he also talks about the various inspirations of each song. My fave is the opening track "Floaters" which Glenn says are `the spots and shadows that appear to be in front of your eyes but are not actually there. In that way, they remind me of the dead and their lingering presence in the lives of the living'. Some great guitar here!
An Album About Death That is Full of Life.......2003-11-07
Almost every song on here is dedicated to some friend or relative who recently passed away -- that happens when you reach our age -- but instrumental rock can't really be "about" anything so don't let that deter you. The music is not lugubrious, it's a joyeous exploration of the tonalities and rhythms in Glenn's head. As the previous reviewer stated, everything Glenn commits to tape is worthy, and this album is more varied and has more tone colors than anything else in his catalog. The guitar stylings are still instantly-recognizable as his (nobody else plays with the edge of feedback like Glenn) but the backing ranges from rock band to conga and hammered dulcimer. Phillips isn't the most prolific guitarist out there, just the one with the most integrity.
