3 out of 5 stars The Greenhornes garage rock brashness.......2005-12-27

The more things change, the more things stay the same. If you're into late 60's garage-rock/psychadelia, 'Dual Mono' captures the defiant spirit and bluesy swagger of another time, eg, The Pretty Things, early Stones, chunky guitar riffs and snarling vocals. Just think the grit and rebellious spirit of The Nuggets 2 compliation.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THE GREENHORNES!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-19

when my friend went 2 the white stripes concert, she told me 2 listen 2 the band that opened 4 them. i did and i am so glad i did! my fave song is Satisfy My Mind. They are very 60's British Rock. think of them as the Rolling Stones meets the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars Best Greenhornes Yet.......2003-01-04

I don't know what happened to the chubby keyboard player, but I don't miss him. This is the best Greenhornes release yet.

Is there a weak spot on this album? I don't think so.

Along with the Mooney Suzuki these guys rank amoung the best (although not the most hyped and written about) of the current revival of 60's garage rock.

Step aside Hives and White Stripes... let the real garage rockers take over.

4 out of 5 stars Rock Comes Full Circle.......2002-12-01

The Greenhornes "Dual Mono" is a definite must have for the true "Garage Rock" fan. With frontrunner Garage rock bands, like The Whitestripes, The Strokes, and The Vines, getting well deserved national attention more and more people are learning that modern rock had gone as far as it could go back in the early 90's. Now bands are going back to the era of music that revolutionized the industry. The 60's and the British Invasion. The Greenhornes do a fantastic job of capturing the finer parts of that era in "Dual Mono". Yet they are one of the best kept secrets in Garage Rock. I think they may soon step up where they belong, alongside The Strokes and The White Stripes.

5 out of 5 stars A nice collection by a fine band........2006-05-31

I was introduced to the Greenhornes by a drummer friend of mine who I jam with occasionally. He had recently been on tour in Europe, and apparently caught wind of this group while overseas. He let me take a listen to a few songs off of this very CD. I can't remember which of the other songs he let me listen to, but I was particularly impressed with "There is a Light". I eventually got around to buying the CD for myself. At first, I was a little dissapointed with the entire product, but after listening to it many times, I've come to really love this CD for what it is - a well-put together collection of great songs.

I'd recommend it for fans of the White Stripes or the Buzzcocks. Really good stuff. There's not a single dud on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Greenhornes.......2006-01-21

The Greenhornes have been at it for a number of years, but had a break-out year in 2005 when they were the opener for most of the White Stripes year-long tour of the "Get Behind Me" tour. All of the sudden, the Greenhornes were written up in Rolling Stone and other rags, and so the label decided to issue this overview.

"Sewed Holes" (19 tracks, 68 min.) is a very generous serving of the Greenhornes' output to date. This is not a "best of", but an introduction of the Greenhornes' sound, and as such this compilation works great. Rightfully, there are 6 tracks from "Dual Mono", their best album so far, with great tracks like the CD opener "It's Not Real" and the mellow "Too Much Sorrow". The "Guns For You" album gets 5 tracks, including the excellent "I've Been Down" and "The End of the Night". Last year's excellent "East Grand Boulevard" EP gets 2 tracks, including the sublime "Shelter From Your Arms", which is my fave song of theirs.

As good as this compilation is, it still doesn't serve justice to how good the Greenhornes are live in concert. And can I make a shout-out to my town Cincinnati, where the Greenhornes are based. I've seen them in concert a number of times, but the best ever was when they opened for the White Stripes at Music Hall, what a sweet home-coming that was! In all, "Sewed Holes" is highly recommended if you are curious about the Greenhornes.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2005-12-03

This is a good collection of songs spanning all of the Greenhornes releases. They are a great band with a 60's British Invasion/early Stones/garage rock sound. Some of the high points on the album are an alternate version of Shadow of Grief (produced by Jack White), The End of the Night, It's Not Real, Good Times and Shelter of Your Arms. The only criticism of the album is they selected some odd choices from their albums. Notably missing is High Time Baby from "The Greenhornes" and Shine Like the Sun from "East Grand Blues". The track order is also a little odd in my opinion, even though it still flows nicely. Overall, this is a good starting point to get into the Greenhornes but you are better served to just get their full albums...they are all great.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles meet Iggy Pop.......2007-01-01

This release by these Cincinnati garage rockers has the distinction of being one of today's few records that don't induce either yawning or deafening.

Every song on this record is different and fascinating. The EP opens with "I'm Going Away", a track very reminiscent of the early Beatles. It's followed by "Shelter of Your Arms", a tribute to the avant-garde. "At Night" is a very garagey track, very Cincinnati. Then comes the record's best song, "Pattern Skies". A fast, distortion-laden track which leaves off with the same feeling as 'Fun House'. "Shine Like The Sun" pays tribute to early blues-rock. The rhythm on the final track is excellent.

Overall, one of the year's absolute strongest records. By far The Greenhornes' strongest release, and probably one of the best of the new millennium. Just one listen will bring you into the greenhornes fan club. Just one listen will do it.

4 out of 5 stars review from the Synthesis.......2005-10-19

East Grand Blues EP exhibits the full versatility that The Greenhornes have to offer. Their music is a mix of modern day pop and alternative rock with a `60s feel to it. Their songs are guitar-driven while also relying on the percussion to bring it all together and while throwing in a tambourine to really give it that mood of yesteryear. The melodic "I'm Going Away" gives off a vibe similar to that of The Beatles, showing their more pop-oriented side. "At Night" is a more alternative sounding song and is lyrically driven. "Shelter Of Your Arms" is a standout song on this EP; it has a darker feel with strong guitar riffs and a heavy beat showing that deep down, this band is all about the rock.

4 out of 5 stars Ready for prime time.......2005-10-14

I saw the Greenhornes open for the White Stripes a few weeks ago and over the course of the 30 minute set I heard hints of Black Sabbath, Cream, The Byrds, even Blue Cheer. This three-piece outfit has a lot going on in a cool, retro sort of way.
East Grand Blues gives a taste of that. I hope this band gets some national recognition and puts out a full length record that showcases what they can really do.

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of the Byrds.......2005-10-08

After hearing the first cut on a local college station I had to order this cd. This song reminded me of the early BYRDS stuff. Can't wait for the new CD

4 out of 5 stars Will the real Greenhornes stand up?.......2005-09-17

It is with some pride that I write this review, given that the Greenhornes are from Cincinnati. Even though the Greenhornes have been around for about 10 years, they are now finally finding some national recognition (Rolling Stone recently wrote them up favorably, among others).

"East Grand Blues" (5 tracks, 15 min.) is not a full-fletched album, due to the fact that Brendan Benson, who produced this, had to quit midway through, due to other commitments. Rather than sitting on the recordings, the band decided to release what they had as an EP. Smart move. This is a great EP. The Greenhornes recreate the British 60s era quite beautifully on here, just listen to the opener "I'm Going Away", or "Pattern Skies", just beautiful, it sounds like the British invasion of 40 years ago.

That said, the Greenhornes are opening for the White Stripes on their current US tour. I saw them here in Cincinnati, and they delivered a 30 min. set of garage blues heavy sound that nothing short of blew the roof off of Music Hall, just amazing and awesome. But that set doesn't sound anything like this EP, so will the real Greenhornes stand up? Either way, they are making terrific music, and "East Grand Blues"", as mistitled as it is, is one great EP. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any better.......2004-12-30

I have not played any CD more than this one in years. I bought it listened to it and forgot about it. For some reason I missed how good it was on first listen. "Stay Away Girl" and "Nobody Loves You" This is how the Stones used to sound when they were really good. Too bad rock this good is so hard to find. I cannot recommend this enough!

5 out of 5 stars You must have this..........2004-10-28

Wonderful, wonderful band from Cincinnati. If you do not own this cd then your music collection is definitely lacking! You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2004-04-10

This is one of those albums a true rock fan will never be able to get enough of. The 60's garage band-style of no holds barred, straight up, no BS rock is finally making a well-deserved comeback, and The Greenhornes are a fine example of why. The White Stripes, blah blah blah, The Strokes, yadda yadda yadda, The Hives, whatever. The garagey bands that get press are all quite fine, and I really like most of them and think they are quite entertaining, but bands like The GreenHornes, The Black Keys, The Datsuns, and even The Libertines and The Walkmen, are where the future of rock is, at least for today. The "The" bands are where it's at, and The Greenhornes are at the forefront.

A fine album from a great band, at a time when even the few really cool albums at big-name record stores are watered down. Solid all the way through. Buy this, buy their other albums, go see them if they happen to be anywhere nearby, buy albums by bands they play with, and give them any money you might still have left. Rock N Roll needs your support!

5 out of 5 stars Garage gods of the future.......2002-03-10

If today's garage rock scene suddenly fell off the map, only to be resurrected some years later by a Lenny Kaye type compiling a 21st Century version of "Nuggets," the Greenhornes would surely have the same kind of respect today's garage afficionados afford to classic bands like the Standells, the Remains and the Sonics.
As things stand, the Greenhornes are absolutely, beyond a doubt, one of the best bands playing real, live, raw rock and roll music today, and one of the most powerul live acts currently gracing America's stages.
On their second full-length album, The Greenhornes rock out with breathtaking passion and energy. "Lies" has all the snot and vitriol of the best 60's pounders, while the band's brooding side is captured perfectly on tracks like "Let Me Be" and "Stay Away Baby." And the group's taste in covers is equally impressive. Their take on the Animals' "Inside Looking Out" is a mind-bending acid opus, and "It's My Soul" conjures up more authentic blues flavor than a bunch of 25-year-old guys from Cincinnati should rightfully be able to handle.
With soulful, world-weary vocals, potboiling organ and more fuzz than you can shake a Tele Custom at -- "Greenhornes" is a garage rock classic to be.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE TTHE GREENHORNES.......2001-07-10

For anybody who hasn't had the pleasure of seeing the Greenhornes live and in person, this record is a good example of what they are all about: Raw, unpretentious, straight up rock and roll. Stellar tracks: "I Can't Stand It", "Lonely Feeling" and "Can't You See". Think early Rolling Stones, Animals... My only complaint about this record is that it does not do the band justice on how good they really are.
